So, who are they?
Catwoman, Storm, Wonder Woman, She Hulk?

I'm beginning a new project and could use some advice on who is popular in comics aside from the Legion.

Help!

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

Well I would say the Wonder Woman, if not popular, is an icon.

Zatanna & Jean Grey have always had a good fan base.

She-Hulk has the advantage of having a series recently.

Catwoman and Storm have both bee around for a while and also have a fan base.

Supergirl & Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) are both recognizable to the general public.

Among others, I would say there is Black Canary, Scarlet Witch, Hawkgirl (Due to Justice League cartoon show).

I think Huntress and Power Girl were more popular when they were the Earth-2 Batgirl & Supergirl counterparts.

My Fav is Fallen Angel

Is Deena Pilgrim from Powers a superhero now? She's sassy... [Wink]

What about Frank Cho's Shenna? [Eek!] [Drool]

Babs is a favorite even though I don't read BoP.

She-Hulk definitely.

Raven of the Titans.

Blink and Nocturne of the Exiles.

Jean back before her first death as Phoenix.

Sue Storm - Invisible Girl/Woman
Ms. Marvel

Daria [Big Grin]
Amethyst
Tigra
Dagger (of Cloak and...)
Wonder Girl (silver age)
Brandy (Liberty Meadows)

Do you mean "never-in-the-Legion," Sketchy? "Non-Legion," to me, suggests those who aren't in the current version. That would include Dawnstar, Andromeda, Thunder, and others from the previous reboot.

Posted by Yellow King on :

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Mary Marvel? She's almost as yummylicious as a Supergirl Robot.

Posted by Vee on :

And lets not forget Wonder Girl DOnna Troy, who is rumored about to return to the DCU.

Posted by Bevis on :

Not just rumoured, confirmed. There's a mini coming out in... June, something like that, written by Phil Jiminez, art by Jose Garcia-Lopez and George Perez. It's four issues I think, supposedly ties into the Inifinte Crisis gubbins and reintroduces Donna into the DCU. Muchly Yay!

As for *my* personal favourites:

Black Canary
Wonder Woman
Oracle (never really read much with Babs as Batgirl and not sure if she counts as a superhero as Oracle, but still...)
Scarlet Witch
Zatanna
Fallen Angel
Peter David's Supergirl
Wasp
Fire
Hawkwoman
Powergirl
Stargirl (aka Star Spnagled Kid II)
Huntress

And I'm very much liking Gail Simone's new version of Rose and Thorn as well, but i don't think she really counts as a hero.

Posted by Star Boy on :

She-Ra: Princess of Power! (has she ever had a comic as opposed to a cartoon?)

As for public perception, I'd say the only heroines known outside of comic reading circles are:

Wonder Woman (mostly due to TV show)
Supergirl (old movie, JLU appearances)
Storm (X-Men films)
Rogue (ditto)
Jean Grey (ditto, but with most people ignorant of Marvel Girl or Phoenix incarnations)
Elektra (Daredevil & Elektra movies)
Batgirl (Pop-culture, Animated Bats & that awful Batman film)
Invisible Girl (on the edge, but bound to get more exposure with the FF movie)
Catwoman (despite the terrible, terrible movie)

Other than that, I suspect you have to be in the know to have heard of any others.

I asked two non-comics reading friends (a couple, one guy and one girl) seperately who they could think of...

Wonder Woman (both)
Supergirl (both)
Powerpuff Girls (both)
Batgirl (her)
Xena (her)
Buffy (her)
The Charmed Ones (her)
Zanya from the Wonder Twins (him) - although he did call her 'that Shazam chick that turns into things'
American Maid (him) - Okay, my friend does watch the Tick cartoon, as does his young son
Invisible Girl (him) - referred to as 'the girl from the Fantastic Four'; when i gave her name as the Invisible Girl, he commented in surprise "Oh! Is that what she does!" Begging the question of exactly what he thought she was doing there in the first place.

And He was annoyed not to have remembered Storm once she was mentioned later by me, claiming to have loved her since the original X-Men cartoons.

It was interesting to see their slighly differing interpretation of 'superhero' in their calls of the Powerpuff Girls, The Charmed Ones, Xena and Buffy for the list. She took the time to mention she definately thought the Charmed Ones were superheroes as they 'have super powers' and 'do good deeds'. [Smile]

My longtime favorites:

BLACK CANARY!

Scarlet Witch

Mary Marvel

Oracle/Batgirl

There's tons more I love, such as Hellcat, Polaris, Valkyrie, Black Widow, Crystal, Medusa, Mantis, Power Girl, Huntress etc. but can they really be called popular? I dunno.

And any chick hero who had her own MEGO doll can be called an icon. Let's see, that would be...

Wonder Woman

Supergirl

Batgirl

Catwoman

Wonder Girl

Invisible Girl

Isis & Lt. Uhura [Wink]

Hey Sketch Lad did you want manga/anime superheroines on the list too? I was thinking of a few last night but being tired I forgot post them.

Scarlet Witch (X-MEN, X-MEN EVOLUTION)
Kitty Pride (X-MEN EVOLUTION)

Chyna

My Favs, not including the above:

Arrowette
Wonder Girl
The Wasp
Abby Chase
Caitlin Fairchild

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've been distracted from this project, but I still plan on doing something with it!

Okay everyone, thank you very much for the input on this list. I've added up all the votes and have compiled the top 12. Note--some characters have combined identities, like Batgirl/Barbara Gordon/Oracle, like Jean Grey/Phoenix/Marvel Girl, like Wonder Girl/Donna Troy. My decision on characters like that is to just include them on the list as I will, and depict them in my project as I will...

So, here's the top 12, from least votes to most. Thank you for nominating all those dozens of other characters, I've been intrigued, but feel like I must focus on most favorite.

12. Wonder Girl
11. Catwoman
10. Scarlet Witch
9. Powergirl
8. Rogue
7. Black Canary
6. Batgirl
5. Invisible Woman
4. Jean Grey
3. Supergirl
2. Wonder Woman
1. Storm

I must say that I totally agree with this list, though I wish Starfire was on there. Still, I wouldn't know who to bump off in order to include her.

I find it interesting that at a Legion forum, the most voted for character is Storm. A Dave Cockrum thing?

Curious about this project I'm working on? Sorry! Not gonna tell yet! [Smile] However, I will say that even though the Legion isn't included on this list, they will be included in the project.

Stay tuned, and thanks again. (Oh, btw... polls closed!)

Hey, Dean-- whatever became of this project? Did I miss it?

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

ML! Wow, thanks for reminding me...

Okay, here it is... I was going to go ahead and publish a sketch book filled with drawings of the most popular female comic book characters. I either did new sketches or gathered ones that I'd already done, and scanned them, and organized them to be laid out in comic book format.

Then, I even used photoshop to add grey tones (this would all be done in black and white). I was very happy with the project, even with my typical sketchy finishes. I even asked a couple of printers what they'd need from me in order to get this thing printed, and I got some decent input.

Then, when it became less fun, because of the technicalities, I guess I sorta lost interest and let the project slip away from me....

Sigh.

I suppose the right thing for me to do would be to a *least* post the sketches here....

That'll take a bit of digging....

Thanks for asking!
