I just wanna say thanks to everyone who plays this game! In just 4 months(!), the first ITOAA thread reached the maximum number of posts, and had to be locked away (preserving it for future generations) and a new one started. I don't recall any other thread getting remotely close to that level of activity. It gives me some level of pride to start a thread that has maintained that much interest.

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled game...I am still thinking of an animal. The story so far: it is a predator, it does not eat its own young, is not domesticated, and does not live in the mountains.

Posted by Candlelight on :

Is this animal land based?

Congrats, lance.
[Yes]

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Is it a mammal?

(And thanks for bringing some much-needed activity to Spaceopoly!) [Big Grin]

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is a land-based mammal.

And you're welcome! This is certainly one of my favorote games ever!

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a member of the cat family?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

yeah I love this game...fun and educational definitely! [Smile]

Question: is this animal mostly depending on climbing activity, instead of chasing activity?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is not a type of cat.

And yes! This animal is much more of a climber than a chaser. (Good one Supes!)

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is this animal a type of slithering snake?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is a mammal, Supes, so no, not a snake.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

hmmm climber....predator....mammal....oh [Hmmm?]

question: does that animal hunt at night?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Yes, it is nocturnal.

Posted by Candlelight on :

Is it a racoon?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Is it an opossum?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

do not know if Raccoon and Opossum are predators....I called them the night thieves! Opossum went into my patio and spooked me out because when it walked in front of the light creating a huge shadow that's freaking HUGE!! that freaked me out! It made me jump out of my seat. ack. sigh.

okay Raccoon loved to do the dumpster diving...sigh.

okay back to the question: hmmmm...since opossum and raccoon are climbers...so i need to think of another one: is this animal squirrel? [Smile]

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is neither a raccoon nor an opossum nor a squirrel.

Posted by Candlelight on :

Squirrel?
Well, there's a predator for you!
[Wink]

I'm not sure about possums (although they're infamous for eating chickens and eggs) but, racoons eat mice, snails, fish, frogs, bats, bugs, . . . pretty much what they can get their little hands on (veggies, too, of course.)
The ones we had loved hamburgers and hot dogs.
Go figure.

Is it a baboon?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

[LOL] I had to try1 right now I cannot think of the predatory climber...

so...

Q: is this animal a type of Chimpanzee? for that reason, I saw the Planet of the Ape movie last week and it was not that bad.

All three (racoons, opossums, squirrels) are omnivores. While possums mostly scavenge for meat they'll certainly attack much smaller animals if the opportunity presents itself.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is neither a baboon nor a chimpanzee.

Posted by Reboot on :

Is it a primate?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is a primate.

Squirrels eat bugs/worms?
I've never seen one eating a bug or a worm, but that doesn't mean much.
A horse or gazelle or etc. will eat the bugs on the graces and leaves and grains that they eat, too, I suppose.

And I agree that any scavenger will kill to eat if it can.
[Yes]
Racoons still seem like true predators, to me.

Is this an Asian predatory mammal?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is Asian!

And squirrels will typically only eat nuts, seeds, grains, and fruits. They will eat meat if they are desperate, though. They will even eat birds' eggs, but only as a last resort.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Is it a panda?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Nope...not a panda.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it have a tail?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Yes, it has quite a long tail.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a macaque?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is not a macaque.

Here is kind of a hint - before I looked up this animal to use in the game, I had never heard of it.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a tamarin?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Nope, not a tamarin.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

does it start with the letters between F and R?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

No, it does not.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

OK, I'll go with this line also - does it start with letters between S and Z?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Is a tamarin cute or what!
Geez.
It looks like a little cartoon and I just want to coo to it!
[Yes]
Is it a tarsier, another cutie, only from the Asian islands?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

YES! It is a Tarsier!

I google on "weird animals" and the tarsier appeared on 2 different lists. You're up, Candle!

Posted by Candlelight on :

Does anyone here watch 'Penguins of Madagasgar'?
It is so funny!
But, do you think the little lemur subject with the huge eyes and tiny body is a tarsier?
Adorable.

Anyway, please let EDE take it.
He guesses seal last time I was up.

I believe that little guy from Madagascar is a mouse lemur.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

hmm Tarsier? a predator? [LOL] well hard to imagine that cute little big-eyed Tarsier.... [No] [Smile]

Posted by Candlelight on :

IIRC, they are exclusively carnivorous!
Bugs, mostly.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarsier

Chaim - Mouse lemurs are pretty similar to tarsiers in looks, aren't they?
But, you're right, it's absolutely a mouse lemur on 'PM'.
[Yes]

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Its eyes are as big as its brain! If my eyes were as big as my brain...well, I like to think my eyes would be bigger...

I can't imagine the glasses I would need to wear then...

Posted by Candlelight on :

[Eek!]

I PMd EDE.
If he isn't back whenever you think ia good, lance, you can take it, or Chaim, please.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Doncha wanna think of an animal, Candle?

Posted by Candlelight on :

I prefer guessing, I guess.
I don't feel that I do it right, or something.
[shrug]

Posted by lancesrealm on :

We haven't seen Eryk in a couple days. I am just gonna pick an animal, and if Eryk wants to shoot my animal and pick one, he is certainly welcome to do so.

Ok, I am thinking of an animal.

Posted by Candlelight on :

Is your animal known for it's beauty and grace?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Um...not really, Candle.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is this animal a vertebrate?

Posted by Candlelight on :

So, it's not horsish, gazellish, dolphinish, peacockish or falconish, to name a few.

Do people fear it?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is a vertebrate.

The sight of this animal would not inspire fear in...anyone, I think.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a mammal?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is not a mammal.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is it a crustacean?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it walk on four legs?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Is it a mudpuppy?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is not a crustacean.

It does not walk on 4 legs.

It is not a mudpuppy.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it walk on legs at all?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Yes, it does walk on legs.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Is this animal a bird of some type?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is this animal carnivorous?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is a bird.

They are omnivores.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is it a hummingbird?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Gosh, supes, hummingbirds are known for their glistening beauty and flying grace.
They're nectar drinkers, too.
[Confused]

Anyway, almost all of the smaller birds are omnivores, IIRC.
It's not scary, either.

Is it a North American migrating type?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is not a hummingbird.

Yes, it is a North American migrating type.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a goose?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Is this bird bigger than the average house cat?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Not a goose.

Um...I guess it might be a little bigger than a house cat.

Posted by Candlelight on :

I was gonna say a swan, but they're much bigger than a house cat. I was also thinking of a robin, but they're much smaller!

And hummingbirds, some or all, DO migrate, so beauty and grace are in the eye of the beholder, but migration is a fact.

Is this bird a duck?

Candle, do you wanna do an animal, or should we give it away?

Posted by Candlelight on :

I'll think of one.
Okay, go ahead.
[Yes]

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Ok..is it a mammal?

Posted by Reboot on :

Does it live underground?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Have you every personally been in the presence of this animal?

Posted by Candlelight on :

This animal is a mammal.

It does not live underground, nor has it ever wrongly been thought to.
[Yes]

I have been in it's presence.
And it was alive.
[chuckle]

Does it live in North America?

Posted by Reboot on :

Did you encounter it in captivity?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Yes, one of the places it lives is North America.

The ones that I've encountered have been in captivity, but I could encounter them almost as easily in the 'wild'.

Posted by Reboot on :

Does it live in urban areas, then?

Posted by Candlelight on :

That's a hard one, I'm going to say 'sort of', and 'sometimes kind of', but you have to remember where I live.

Edit: Which is Oregon, which you probably didn't know.
[LOL]

does this animal live in a zoo?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it bigger than a basketball?

Posted by Candlelight on :

It does not live in a zoo.

And, it is bigger than a basketball.
(I double checked so I got it right, sometimes people slip in 'baseball' on me! [Wink] )

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a raccoon?

Posted by Candlelight on :

[No]
Nope.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Does it have paws?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

does this kind of animal appear in any animation or cartoon TV show (not movie)?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Is it a hooved animal?

I want to say where I live differently - I live in the PACIFIC Northwest.
This is a more accurate clue for my animal.

And, no paws or hooves.

Posted by Candlelight on :

And it has appeared in a number of features, pretty much everything that I can think of, although it's not always the star.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

oh is it a Monkfish?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Does it live in water?

Can it fly?

It is not a monkfish.
My animal does live in water!
Flying is a no.
And it is not a seal.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a grey whale?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a sea lion?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Is it a salmon?

Posted by Candlelight on :

It's not a grey whale, but you've almost got it.

Sea lions are one of the seals with ears, IIRC, so no, not a sea lion - close, in a way, though.

Not a salmon, either, but another good guess.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is it a humpback whale?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Sperm whale then? (Although I am betting Supes has it)

I know it's hard to remember clues from other pages, so, at our current place in the game, these are the 2 things that you need to remember.

It's not humpback or sperm whales.

Orca?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Absolutely.
[Yes]

There might be some small great whales in captivity, somewhere, for medical reasons, but they're not kept in any of the Sea type parks.

Orca's live in 3 different ways, but resident pods are the ones that are seen in the bays of Seattle, which is sort of the middle of town, since the city follows the contours of the bay.

There are pods that come in for seals on the Oregon coast bay towns, too, but I think they are the second type, coastal pods.

I've seen orcas at Sea World in Canada (IIRC) and a couple of them held at a medical facility, also in Canada.
The baby one actually interacted with my toddler.
On her own, not trained to.
Amazing!

You're up, Set!

Posted by Set on :

Orca tangent;
.
Click Here For A SpoilerI got to brush Shamu's teeth (well, one of the 'Shamus', I have no idea if it was the original) when my mom got annoyed that we'd driven from Arizona to go to Sea World or whatever in California, and the show was closed down for the day, and snuck me in. The young girl who was the only person present apparently didn't care much about 'the rules,' and let us have a private showing. I was five, the sight of something that could *easily* swallow me whole terrified me, and my mom enjoyed the experience way more than me...

And I've picked an animal!

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a mammal?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

And how in the world did you sneak in, Set? I guess security wasn't as tight back then?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Is this an animal you have personally encountered?

Posted by Set on :

Security was non-existent, and my mom's got mad skillz at doing (and getting away with) stuff she's not supposed to. [Smile]

It is not a mammal.

It is not an animal that I have personally encountered. (Ooh, good one, having raised animals for an animal park and lived on a farm, that cuts out a lot of critters!)

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Is this animal native to Africa?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is this animal also displayed at the zoo?

Posted by Set on :

It is not native to Africa.

It is not the sort of animal that one would normally see at a zoo, although, in the final analysis, I'm not sure there are any living animals that haven't been displayed in a zoo, at one point or another...

sigh

Is this non-flying vertebrate still a bird?

What animals did you raise for the park?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it walk on legs?

Posted by Set on :

It is a reptile.

It is not a bird, flightless or otherwise.

It does walk on legs. (nice, managed to weed out a lot of reptiles with that one chaim!)

(animals raised for the animal park; a chimp, some tigers, some lions, a jaguar, a llama, and some antelope/gazelle/fallow deer type critters that interbred with each other so indiscriminately that they no longer counted as anything other than 'mutt'. no reptiles, so this doesn't give any free info)

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a lizard, or type thereof?

Posted by Set on :

While most people would call it a lizard, it is in a different Order.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Tuatara?

Posted by Set on :

Holy crap! Good going lancesrealm, it is indeed a tuatara! Your turn.

Posted by Candlelight on :

We've had it guessed before, a couple of times.
I don't remember if it was actually used as the animal by someone.
These are experienced guessers here!
[Yes]

Baby tigers and lions and jaguars?
Oh, my.
You are one fortunate person!
What did you do, what was it like?
When did you have to give them up?
HOW could you give them up?

Is your creature, lance, oceanic?

[ August 30, 2011, 01:19 AM: Message edited by: Candlelight ]

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Actually, my animal was the tuatara a month or so ago. As soon as you said it looked like a lizard, but was a different order, I thought it had to be the tuatara. OK, lemme think of one...

OK, I am thinking of an animal.

Nope, it is not oceanic or aquatic or marine or amphibious or...well, you get the idea I think.

Okeydokey..I am thinking of an animal.

Is it a vertebrate?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Tes, it is a vertebrate.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it walk on four legs?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is this animal a mythological figure?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It does not walk on 4 legs.

It is not mythological - it is a real animal that exists today.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it have any legs at all?

Posted by dedman on :

Does it fly?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It has no legs.

It does not fly.

Is it a type of fish?

Is it a type of snake?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is a type of fish..and hence not a snake.

Is it a freshwater fish?

It is a freshwater fish.

Is it a trout?

It is not a trout.

Does this fish begin with a letter between A and M (inclusive)?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Yes it does.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it begin with a letter between A and G?

(sorry if this seems unsporting, but I can't think off-hand of a better effective way to narrow down the field)

Posted by dedman on :

Is it a Bass?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Yes, Chaim, it starts with A - G.

It is not a bass.

Here are some hints that might (or might not) be helpful.

1) This is not a fish most people have heard of.

2) This fish is one of the fish in the Wii game Endless Ocean 2, which is why I picked it. (I think it looks cool.)

3) This fish is approximately the size of a human adult male.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Well, I'll continue alphabetically. Does it start with letters A, B or C?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

I'll just be extra helpful since I think this is a little tough - it starts with an 'A.'

Angel Fish?

A featured fish on 'River Monsters', a show I've often watched with my husband.

It is neither of these. Since this fish is a little obscure, I'll throw out a big hint - this fish lives in rivers in South America.

is it an Ailorous Pearl?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does its name contain the word "Amazon"?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Nope.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Archer fish?

Posted by Candlelight on :

I'm pretty sure it's an Arapaima, a living fossil and considered the largest fresh water fish in the world, according to Wikipedia, and it lives in South America.

I went to to the 'Endless Ocean' site, pushed the marine animal tab and hunted there.

Such a fun mystery.
[Yes]

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Thanks Candle! It was kind of an obscure fish, so I threw in several extra clues.

You are right of course; it is an arapaima! (Although I might have picked archer fish if I had thought of them!)

You are up, Candle!

Posted by Candlelight on :

Okay.
Thinking of an animal.

Is it a tree sloth?

[No] , silly!

Is it a vertebrate?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

does this animal have a Pokemon version? (kind of...like 1/2 of each Pokemon figure tends to be animal.)

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it an insect?

Posted by Candlelight on :

It's not a vertebrate.
It's not an insect.

I don't think it's one pokemon, but perhaps an aspect or ability was used on one or more of them.
I'm not very familiar with any of them after Crystal, I'm afraid.

Is it a mollusk?

Not an oyster, or a clam.
(There IS an early pokemon who's a combination of the two, Cloyster, by the way, [Yes] )

Not a squid, either.
[No]

is it an animal with weird name/appearance, such as sea pig?

Posted by Candlelight on :

It's a type of sea slug, I believe.
I'm going for a specific one.
It's famous.

No shell.

Not a sea pig, but you could call it slightly 'weird'.
(What is a sea pig?)

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a nudibranch?

Google on sea pig, Candle! I think they are cool!

Posted by Candlelight on :

I want a specific nudibranch, lancelot!
[Yes]

I always seem to get virus attacks on Google, but I WILL Wiki!

Edit: I checked out a sea pig! They're a Scotobrand sea cucumber and amazing.
Supes had it right, 'weird'!

Oh, and there are pokemon based on squids, well and jellyfish, too - the Tentacruel family.
(A throw-a-way fact. I'm full of those. sigh)

Is it a Spanish Dancer?

There are over 3000 types of nudibranches, and none of them seem to be anything I have heard of before. You're driving me nuts with this one...

Posted by Candlelight on :

Well, not TOO nuts!
[Yes]
It IS a Spanish Dancer, the only one in it's species.
I've seen them on lots of sea specials!
You should see them move in the water.
They're like a song, all swaying ruffles and colors.
Gorgeous!

Posted by lancesrealm on :

*wipes perspiration from brow*

Well, thanks sweetie! Every other nudibranch has just the Latin name which meant about zero to me.

Ok, off we go...I am thinking of an animal, chosen my my 10-yr-old boy.

Oh, and thanks Candle, since I learned more about nudibranches! (I wonder how many students would sign up for a college class called "nudibranches?")

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Chosen by your 10-year-old boy, eh?

Is the animal extinct?

lol
Good one, Chaim!

Does it poop a lot?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is this animal part of the animal farm?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is not extinct.

Um..I guess it poops as much as it needs to.

Been a long time since I read that story, but no, I don't recall this animal in "Animal Farm."

Is it a vertebrate?

Yes it is.

Is it domesticated?

supes - I used your sea pig/cucumber for a picture on LASH's fandango thread today, one page back from the end.)
[Yes]

Posted by lancesrealm on :

No, it does not walk on 4 legs.

Candle, it might be possible, but for the most part, no, this is not a domesticated animal.

Posted by Candlelight on :

The 'poop' question kind of went along with the dinosaur type question. I was remembering the 'Jurasic Park' scene with the sick triceratops.
[shrug]

Is your animal a bird?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Nope, not a bird.

Posted by Candlelight on :

Fish?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

does this animal have long ears?

It is not a fish, nor does it have long ears. It is also not a long-eared fish.

does this animal have the flying ability?

This animal does not fly.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

does this animal "slide" on land (crawl, slither?)?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Does it live in water?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Nope - doesn't slide.

It does not live in water.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

wow your son must have thought of something that we have not thought of before. good job.

hmmm does this animal prey on smaller animals (for example, bats eat flies, Owl eats mice, etc)?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Yes, it does prey on some smaller animals.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

does this animal have more than 4 legs?

Are there vertebrates with more than 4 legs?
My head's not working right tonight, I guess.

Is this animal a monkey?

No, it doesn't have more than 4 legs.

No, it is not a monkey.

Posted by Candlelight on :

Kangaroo?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Nope, not a kangaroo.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is it a Gorilla?

Yes! It is a gorilla!

Pick an animal Supes!

(You're getting good at this; did you steal Candle's mojo?)

Posted by superboymddjr on :

ah....deductive skills...esp when I shifted my mind into thinking like a 10 years old boy...I remember pounding on my chest like a gorilla at elementary school trying to scare all the girls away. [Smile]

okay got an animal ready...fire away!

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a mammal?

Posted by Candlelight on :

I went back and forth on apes/gorilla's because they DO use their hands to walk alot.
I guess thinking of them as 'hands' brings a 'no' to the question of 'do they walk on four legs' though.
[Yes]

And, supes can have my mojo if he wants it.

Does it live in water?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Ya know, I thought about the answer to that a lot. I finally decided they simply weren't legs.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

#1 - [Yes] a mammal it is.

#2 - [No] no not living in water definitely.

Posted by Candlelight on :

Is it a BIG mammal, say lion+?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it native to North America?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it native to Africa?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

#3 - [Yes] yes when it becomes an adult....yes. bigger than Lion.

#4 and #5 - hmmm native? depends on what kind of species....some of them are native to North America, some of them are native to Africa, as well. wow hard question to answer. [Smile]

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it an antelope?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

#6 - [No] not an antelope

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it have hooves?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Is it a horse?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

#7 - [Yes] yes it does have the hooves...

#8 - [No] not a horse. but you're closer. [Smile]

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a donkey?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

#9 - :nope: don't think that there is a Donkey in Africa...hmmm when I say that "you're closer'....I mean not horse,,,another animal....although that horse and this animal shares the hmmmm similar background (wrong word maybe....hmm situation?) but different in physical appearance..." get it?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a hippo?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a camel?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Dang it!
I was gonna guess camel.
lol
Although, if you mean similar history, like brought to North America by humans, I'm happier going with cattle.
Didn't longhorns come from bison or something (and no, I didn't look anything up, as you can tell.)
Is it cattle?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

#10, #11.... [No] nope not a hippo, and not a camel.......

#12 - [Yes] yes it is a Cow I was going for! Moooooooooooooooo!

Posted by Candlelight on :

[Smile]
So, I'm thinking of a creature.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a mammal?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Mostly [Yes] but, somewhat [No] , lance.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it native to Australia?

Posted by Candlelight on :

[No] Not Ausies.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Mostly a mammal? Hmmm....

Sounds like it could be a griffon, so I'll guess that.

Posted by Candlelight on :

[No]
(But good listening to clues.)

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a real animal, or fictional?

Posted by Candlelight on :

[No] , [Yes] .

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it from a comic book? Possibly a better phrasing is, did it originate in a comic book?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Nope.
But, it's certainly appeared in comic books.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does this animal originate in ancient mythology?

Posted by Candlelight on :

[Yes]

Is it a manticore?

is it a Sphnix?

Posted by Candlelight on :

It's not Pegasus or one like him.
It's collie+ sized, depending on the story and/or artistic interpretation.

My creature is not a mermaid.
(There's so much more I want to say here, but I won't, yet.)

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Um...is it a centaur?

(I am sure that is not correct since it would then be all mammal, but I can't think of anything better.)

Posted by Candlelight on :

No, it's not a centaur.

But, you got it half right.
(Huge clue, that.)

Posted by Set on :

Hippocampus?

Posted by Candlelight on :

No.
I'll have to look a hippocampus up. I've heard of them before but I can't place what they look like or where they fit into mythology.

Is it a minotaur?

No.

This isn't a hard one.
Ya'll might want to ask a few more questions about the combination.
The other part of the mammal creature isn't alien or demonic or very weird.
[shrug]

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Is it a hybrid of a horse with something else?

Nope, but you're on the right track.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

are you thinking of 1/2 man and 1/2 animal?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Basicly, yes.
The human/humanoid part is recognizably so, although it may not be exactly 50/50.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is it a Pan? (1/2 goat, 1/2 man)

Posted by Candlelight on :

Nope, but a good, thought out guess.
[Yes]

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is it a manbird - Griffith? cross that out....xxxx I am beginning to think otherwise....better question this time -

does this animal come from the Egyptian mythology?

[ September 17, 2011, 03:29 AM: Message edited by: superboymddjr ]

Posted by Candlelight on :

It's a humanoidbird, but not a Griffon.
(I think that's what you're thinking of, anyway. A griffon is part lion and part eagle.
It's thought by scientists, that people built them in their minds from fossils seen in the Valley of the Gryphons, but they were actually a type of non-flying dinosaur.)

Posted by superboymddjr on :

okay then is this animal a part of Egyptian mythology?

Posted by Candlelight on :

No.
But, that's a great question since the Egyptions have so many of those in their mythology.

Hint: these creatures appeared in a great classic, stop action movie.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

It it a siren?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is it a Werewolf?

I think they were memorable in, IIRC, 'Clash of Titans'.

Hmmm....I think the answer to your question is likely no, Supes. Good question though.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it native to Africa?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is not native to Africa.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

does this animal have the certain climate conditions, such as need to live in Tundra area (cold and snow), or hot (desert) or something like that?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Sorry about the wording in my sentences sometimes.
I get two or more, sentences going in my head and then, I combine them when I think I'm choosing one.
sigh

So, we have a non-flying, landbased mammal with no prehesile tail, it's not from Africa or mythological in origin and kids probably don't know much about it.

Does it climb trees or cliffs?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Supes, it doesn't live in the arctic nor does it live in the desert.

Candle, I thought the wording was funny, so think nothing of it.

No, this animal isn't really any kind of a climber.

It is not a bird of paradise.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Does it start with the letters A - L?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It does not start with letters between A and L (inclusive).

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Does it start with the letters M - S?

Can you tell I am running out of other questions to narrow it down?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Is it a Quetzalcoati?

[ September 23, 2011, 02:35 PM: Message edited by: Candlelight ]

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Candlelight has it (pretty much), it is a Quetzal!

(Quetzalcoatl is the name of an Aztec deity, but only the first half is the name of the bird.)

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Actually, there is a very large extinct pterosaur called the Quetzalcoatlus. I thought that was what Candle meant, even though she clearly typed something else. Shows what I know...

Posted by superboymddjr on :

where is Candlelight?

I will go ahead starting the question -

is the animal an aquatic?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

We haven't seen Candle in about 4 days, so I am just gonna pick an animal and move things along. If Candle wants her turn back, she is certainly welcome to it.

Ok, I am thinking of a very common animal.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Anybody still wanna play this game?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

wow I was gone for a few days and come back and see this...everyone must be waiting for Candle, eh? [LOL]

okay --- is this animal mammal?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Yep, it is a mammal.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is it a flying mammal?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

No, it doesn't fly.

Posted by Future on :

Is the animal native to the Americas?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Is it domesticated by humans?

(Er... I'm not sure who other than humans would domesticate it, but...)

P.S. I don't have a lot of time to play right now but I'd hate to see the game die out!

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is native to the Americas - at least, it is now.

Yes, it is a domestic animal.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Is it typically a pet rather than livestock?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is this animal typically used for its meat?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Yes, it is a pet.

No, we typically don't eat it.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

does this animal have more than 3-letters?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Nope - it has exactly 3 letters. Usually, I mean.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

does this animal have an arch enemy of another animal that s also a 3-letters? [Smile]

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a dog?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Yes it does Supes, and it is not a dog.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a cat?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is indeed a cat, IB.

Pick an animal, good sir!

Posted by lancesrealm on :

I'll start - are you a tree sloth?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Thank you, my good man.

Nope, I am not a tree sloth.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a vertebrate?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, it is a vertebrate.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it walk on four legs?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a mammal?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Sorry about that.

Yes, it does move on all fours, and it is a mammal.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it bigger than a house cat?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it have hooves?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

When fully-grown, it may be bigger than a house cat.

No, it doesn't have hooves.

Another clue - read my answers very literally [Smile]

So, we're looking for a mammal that may be bigger than a house cat when fully grown. It moves on four legs, but does not have hooves.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

I am interpreting your clue to mean that it moves on all 4s, but doesn't necessarily walk on them.

So, ok, is this animal from Australia?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

You interpreted right, lance. This animal does exist in Australia, but did not originate in it.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a dingo?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a wallaby?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No to both.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a marsupial?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, it is not.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is it a Kiwi?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, it is not a kiwi.

Remember, I said the animal is present in Australia, but did not originate there.

So, we're looking for a mammal that may be bigger than a house cat when fully grown. It moves (but does not necessarily walk) on four legs, but does not have hooves. It may be found in Australia, but did not originate from there. It is not a marsupial, a dingo, a wallaby, or a kiwi.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a rabbit?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Correct, lance! Rabbits were introduced to Australia by settlers who wanted to hunt them for sport. What they didn't count on was the speed at which rabbits multiply, and their surprising ability to escape from enclosures.

The rabbit population has continued to thrive there despite various efforts taken to curb its growth.

Rabbits can vastly range in size, from dwarf breeds to giants.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

I had to think for a bit about your clues, then I remembered the story about the rabbits. Anyway, ok, I am thinking of an animal.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Is it a mammal?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Nope, not a mammal.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I hope the non-straightforward nature of the clues made it more fun, lance.

I think the four legs and Australia answers put together were the most helpful.

Is your animal a bird?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Nope, not a bird.

After you said it was in Australia, but not native, I remembered the story of the guy who wanted to go rabbit hunting so he released some rabbits. That fit in with the clue about the animal not exactly walking, and voila!

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Is it a plane?

Er... I mean, is it a reptile?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it an invertebrate?

When you guys asked about Australia, that's exactly the story that I thought of too. Great minds [Big Grin]

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Great minds shrink, all right.

It is not a reptile.

It is an invertebrate.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Does it live underwater?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Nope, don'r recall ever seeing any underwater.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Can it fly?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Yes, it can fly.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Does it sting?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

No, it doesn't sting.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a butterfly?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Nope, not a butterfly.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a ladybug?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

nope - a little bigger than a ladybug.

Since it is an insect, I'll give a hint here - most people have seen this insect in their homes at one time.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

A cockroach?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

That's it! My next hint was gonna be "think Kafka," but now it's unnecessary.

You are up, IB.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

[Shudder]

I suddenly remembered the time I woke up cause a roach was crawling on my face.

Glad I woke up before I ate it!

Okay, I'm thinking of an animal...

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a mammal?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, it is a mammal.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it native to Australia?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, they exist in Australia, but from what I understand, they did not really originate there.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it found in the USA?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, it can also be found in the USA.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it bigger than a basketball?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Some species can be larger than a basketball, but generally they are not.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Does it give birth to more than 4 offspring at a time?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I gotta say, lance, that you sure do ask the toughest questions! But it's a lot of fun researching.

From what I understand, the majority of species give birth to only one offspring at a time.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Ha! Usually I have to frequently do reasearch when I have the animal.

Is your animal herbivorous?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Some species are herbivorous, but the majority are not.

See, message boards ARE good for learning!

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it usually brown?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, brown is one of its common colors. Gray and black are also common.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Does its diet consist mostly of incests?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Some species do eat mostly insects, yes.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Recap:

We're looking for a mammal found in both the USA and Australia. Generally, they are smaller than a basketball. Most if not all species give birth to one offspring at a time. They are commonly brown, black or gray. Some species are herbivorous, but more of them eat mostly insects. Other species have different diets, though.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

I just noticed my typo. Of course I meant insects.

Does this animal live in groups, or is it a loner?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Some are loners, but it seems majority live in groups.

Although as depicted in fiction, they're almost always shown in groups.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is it a Meekrat?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Nope, not a meerkat.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is this an animal a nine-year-old would likely have heard of?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, it definitely is.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is it a Tazmanian Devil? that one the kids certainly have heard of for sure, thanks to Bugs Bunny Cartoon show. [LOL]

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

hahaha it took me a few years to realize that Tazmanian devils really did exist.

but no, it is not.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Does this animal alphabetically precede "lion?"

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes to that, it does.

Is it a bat?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

If it is indeed a bat, I think Supes should have the next animal. I would never have thought to ask if it could fly.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

It is indeed a bat. That's really gracious of you, lance. I'm sure supes will appreciate that.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Ha! Well, I racked my brain to come up with questions to narrow it down, and he scores a bulls-eye. I think it is deserved. Your animal, Supes.

oh cool thanks Lance --- okay -

*borrowing Beast Boy's power to transform into.....*

what do you see me now as .....?

hmmm let me rephrase that....youre closer --- what kind of bee?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

A Honeybee?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

ohhh..youre getting warmer....warmer....

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

a hornet?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

brrr...youre going too cold.....hint: first bee....then honeybee.....then...........?????

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

a... Bumblebee?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

YES!!! bumblebee!!! Last Week, I was working on the patio planting and resoil/repotting...since I could not hear the bzzzzz....when I turned around, I was sooo FREAKED out when that HUGE black and yellow Bumblebee (same size of half dollar) right in front of my face...YIKEs....then Bee went off and I ran inside home --- whew...because I am allergic to Bumblebee and bee stings. (and hornets, and wasp and you get the picture -- even fire ants sting too) so that s what I had in my mind when I was next.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

WHOA. That is one big bumblebee, and I'm glad to say I've never seen anything that big yet.

Glad you made it out without getting stung [Big Grin]

Okay, I'm thinking of an animal...

Okay, wiki time for me - is it a Carabao, a type of water buffalo?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a banteng? (another type of cattle in Southeast Asia)

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is neither a carabao nor a banteng.

I am not thinking of anything that obscure.

Here's a hint. When I was asked about transport, I said it's most CELEBRATED use is as transport. Its use as transport has been immortalized in poetry.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

My brain is not working well now, but... a horse?

I'm pretty sure they have those in South America though...

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Not a horse, which they do have in South America.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Hmmm...

Besides Asia, is this animal domesticated in Europe as well?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Yes, some of the cultures to which I referred are in Europe.

Is it a mammal?

Good one CMK!

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Thanks, Lance! I didn't expect it to be so challenging, but once we got to carabao and banteng (both of which I had to look up myself), I knew I needed to give a hint that would steer things back in the right direction.

IB, is it a vertebrate?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, it is a vertebrate.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it walk on four legs?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

They lean towards being carnivores, but can also adapt to being omnivores.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a type of bear?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

You didn't answer my question about whether or not it is a mammal.

Is it native to North America?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Sorry lance, missed your Q. Yes, it is a mammal.

So we're looking for a mammal, bigger than a cat, walks on four legs, usually carnivorous but can be omnivorous.

It can be found in North America, but its origins are thought to be elsewhere.

It is not a type of bear.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

I think swine eat anything edible that they can get their snouts around.
We raised them when I was a kid.

Is it a raccoon?
I always like to guess them.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Nope, it is not swine.

Yes, it did originate in Asia.

And no, it is not a raccoon. (And you're right - my godfather had a pig farm once, and pretty much anything that looked like food went into their slop!)

Posted by Candlelight on :

My experience is that it doesn't even have to look like food - I guess they don't call them 'pigs' for nothing!
[Yes]

Is it a wolf?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Nope, it's not a wolf [Smile] It does share a common ancestor with the wolf, though.

No, it is not.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, not BETWEEN S and Z. So it would begin with a letter from M to S.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Blast, I phrased that wrong. Does it begin with an S?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, it does.

Not really wrong, but I decided to clarify since I think my question has been open quite a while [Smile]

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a Shih-Tzu?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Correct! We have a 5-month old puppy now, and he's quite a handful.

So... is your animal a vertebrate?

Yes it is.

It is a reptile.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a snake?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Is it a gecko?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is a snake, not a gecko.

Is it a poisonous snake?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it native to South America?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is not poisonous. It is native to South America.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it an anaconda?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Exactly what I was thinking, IB. I shoulda guessed it earlier.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Our two questions together do narrow the field down a lot, lance. I'm pretty sure there are other snakes that fit this description, though.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is not an anaconda.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a boa constrictor?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is a boa constrictor!

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I hope I don't dream about one later.

Okay, I'm thinking of an animal...

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a vertebrate?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, it is.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it walk on four legs?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, it doesn't.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it aquatic?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, it isn't.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it fly?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, it does.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a bird?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it bigger than a baseball?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, it is a bird, and it is bigger than a baseball.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a type of raptor?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes it is.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a falcon?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a hawk?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, not a falcon or a hawk.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it an eagle?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

That's it, it is an eagle!

You're up.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

OK...I am thinking of an animal.

Posted by Candlelight on :

Did your son think of it first?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Nope...he was too busy eating pizza. Thunk it up all by my lonesome.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it an animal that produces a pizza topping? [Razz] I kid!

Is it a vertebrate?

Posted by Set on :

Is it a pig?

(Why yes, I'm shooting in the dark again!)

Posted by lancesrealm on :

No to the pizza topping - and hence not a pig - and yes to vertebrate.

Shooting at pigs in the dark is just plain silly, and yet, it sounds like a lot of fun!

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it walk on four legs?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Well, maybe if we're shooting paintballs or cauliflower at the pigs in the dark, it would be fun.
[Yes]

Is this vertebrate a predator?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

No, not a predator. Cailiflower? Do they even make vegetable weaponry?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a mammal?

Btw, CMK asked if it walks on four legs [Smile]

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Oh, sorry. Yes, it walks on 4 legs...sort of.

It is a mammal.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Does it hop instead of walk?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a great ape of some sort?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It doesn't hop, and it isn't any sort of primate.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it primarily live in trees?

Posted by Candlelight on :

No, I don't know of any veggie guns but, I know that pigs like cauliflower!
[Yes]

If it sort of walks on 4 legs, does it sort of walk or does it sort of have legs, ummm.

Is this animal a hopper?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It does live primarily in trees, and it is not a hopper.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it native to South America?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it native to Africa?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is native to South America. It does not live in Africa, according to my research.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a tree sloth?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Yes! It is actually a sloth!

Take it away, CMK!

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Very cute. For once no one asked the tree sloth question to start off with.

OK, I'm thinking of an animal.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a vertebrate?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is a vertebrate.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a mammal?

It is a mammal.

It is not domesticated.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Does it have hooves?

Is it native to Africa?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It does not have hooves. It is not native to the African continent.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a predator?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Yes, it is a predator.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it native to South America?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it at the top of its food chain?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Some species live in the area of South America.

As far as I can tell, it is on the top of its food chain. As far as I can tell, the only creature that preys on this animal is humans, which I don't really think of as part of its food chain.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Do humans hunt this animal for its meat only?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Humans don't use the species for anything else.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it also native to North America?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Some species live in the area of North America as well.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Does it have more than one offspring at a time?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Nope, just one at a time.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I'm assuming this species isn't hunted for its fur, since you said humans only use it for meat.

Hmm...

Is it an aquatic mammal?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is an aquatic mammal! (Hence the wording on my answers above on the continent questions.)

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yeah, that was pretty tricky wording. Nice going.

Is it a killer whale?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Not a killer whale.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

A dolphin?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Not a dolphin.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Not a sperm whale.

Posted by Candlelight on :

Is it an elephant seal?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Not an elephant seal.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it classified under Order Cetacea (whales, dolphins, porpoises?)

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Yes it is classified under order Cetacea.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it one of the baleen whales?

Posted by Candlelight on :

I don't know.
I've seen shows where orca's attack and eat members of the baleen whale family, but I suppose that that action might be rare.
Calves are especially vulnerable to predators.

But, baleen types are the only thing left, that I can think of, too.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is not a baleen whale. If you look over the species that were listed, there's a pretty clear omission, given the fact that the animal is a cetacean.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I'm blanking on the answer right now, but... a narwhal?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Nope.

I'm practically giving it away here - look at the animals you list in your question for order Cetacea, in the parenthesis.

Posted by Candlelight on :

Okay, I went to wiki.
I'd thought of this one before but eliminated it because of the orca and great white issue.
sigh

Is your animal a humpback whale?
(Which appears to not be a baleen type, which I didn't know and still don't quite understand.)

Sorry we frustrated you a little (a lot?), Chaim.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

No, not a humpback whale.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

So... you're thinking of a porpoise?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

There we go! Porpoise!

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

*smacks head*

That took me long enough.

Okay... I'm thinking of an animal.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a vertebrate?

Posted by Candlelight on :

sigh

Dolphins and porpoises are a major great white food source, especially in the Mediterranean Sea.
They've also been found in Tiger and Hammer Head sharks, as well.
Orca's will eat them, too.

Porpoises are also kept by humans for entertainment purposes, i.e. Sea World.

The real problem is that I usually think of dolphins and porpoises as one group, even though I know that they're not.
[No]

So, good one!
[Yes]

IB - does your animal fly?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, not a vertebrate.

And no, it doesn't fly either.

Same here - I always assumed dolphins and porpoises were the exact same thing!

Posted by Candlelight on :

Is it an insect?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Nope, not an insect either.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it aquatic?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, it is aquatic.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a mollusk?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Does it have a shell?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, it does indeed have a shell.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a bivalve?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, it is not a bivalve.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a nautilus?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Correct, it is a nautilus. You're up!

I don't suppose you're thinking of a tree sloth, are you?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Nope.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a vertebrate?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is a vertebrate.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Is it a mammal?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is a mammal.

Posted by Candlelight on :

Is it a marsupial mammal?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a carnivore?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is not a marsupial. It is not carnivorous.

Is it a domesticated mammal?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is not a domesticated mammal.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

It is not a squirrel.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

A beaver?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is not a beaver. (Thanks! I just had it stuffed!)

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Where are you going to put your new beaver?

A chipmunk?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

On the top shelf, where my secretary has to climb a ladder to retrieve it, of course.

Not a chipmunk.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it in Suborder Castorimorpha?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is in Suborder Castorimorpha.

Does it have hooves?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, it is not wild. It doesn't have hooves, either.

Posted by dedman on :

Is it normally a house pet?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it commonly eaten in western society?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

It is normally a house pet, and is not commonly eaten in the West.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a Gerbil?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Is it a hamster?
(I have an interesting, I think, hamster thread on Bit's, although I spelled it with a p added, for fun, I thought at the time.
Your kids might like it, lance.)
[Yes]

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, it is a breed of dog [Smile]

What's the name of your hamster thread, Candle? [Smile]

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it, standing naturally on all fours, taller than knee-high on an average human being?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, it is not that tall.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a dachshund?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Correct, it is a dachshund! I had a dachshund as my first pet; poor fellow passed away at 11 years old [Frown]

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Sorry for the loss. Still, I imagine it was a good life for him - 11 years for a dog is pretty long, isn't it?

I'm thinking of an animal.

It depends on the breed. Smaller dogs tend to live quite a bit longer than larger dogs. Without researching it, 11 sounds a bit short for a dachsund, who would imagine would average about 14-15.

Anyway, is it a mammal?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Thanks, CMK. He was a wonderful dog, and I remember having to carry him out towards the end when he became too weak to walk to the curb where he'd relieve himself.

Dachshunds average 12-15 years, so I'll have to check with my mom. I remember he passed in 2008, but I keep forgetting whether he was born in 1997 or 1995. I'm leaning towards '95, since I remember my mom kept saying he did live a long life.

Is your animal an invertebrate?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is an invertebrate.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it an insect?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is not an insect.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it aquatic?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is not naturally aquatic, but under some circumstances, you can see them in water.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is that type of circumstance related to the life-cycle of this animal? (e.g. spends a stage of its life in water)

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

No, that circumstance is not related to the life-cycle of the animal. It is related to external causes. But common to see.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Hmmmm....

Is it a spider?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It is not a spider.

Old Buster was 14 years old when he passed. He did live quite a long life...

Earthworm on a fishing hook.
sigh

Does your animal live mostly in the water?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a vertebrate?

Not a crustacean or arachnid, but it is an arthropod... hmm...

A horseshoe crab?

Posted by dedman on :

Not an horseshoe crab

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

I thought that was a great guess.

Is it an isopod?

Posted by Candlelight on :

It's not the extinct trilobite?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a type of chelicerate ?

Posted by dedman on :

Sorry for the delay...rough few days at work...

Anyways, it is not any of those...

I'm new to this thread, do we give additional hints as time goes by?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yup, I think you can feel free to give additional hints as you wish, deddy.

Is it a sea spider?

Posted by dedman on :

Not a sea spider

The type of arthropod you are looking for is an insect

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a mosquito?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it a dragonfly?

Posted by dedman on :

lol, my clue was too good!

IB got it!!

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I actually find it funny how we all had that as a blind spot. Somehow we must have all automatically assumed that we'd already asked if it were an insect!

Congrats, deddy [Razz]

Okay, I'm thinking of an animal...

Does it begin with letters A through M, inclusive?

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Is it ursine?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

It is not ursine, but it does begin with a letter from A to M.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Don't tell me I killed this thread [Frown]

Clue - this animal has a more popular "cousin", which is extremely similar and has been one of the animals I've thought of earlier in this thread.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

I'm not about to run through the entire thread to see what you thought of and then figure out which one you're referring to.

Does it begin with a letter between A and G, inclusive?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, it doesn't begin with a latter between A and G.

Try focusing on the "similar relative" part of the clue.

Good summary. One more, I believe you said it can be found in Africa.

Does it begin with K, L or M?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Nope, ot K, L or M.

Thanks for the reminder!

- Mammal
- No hooves
- Not an elephant, platypus or porcupine

No, I just clicked on the thread and saw the list of clues!

Anyway, I'm thinking of an animal.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

^ is absolutely amazed.

Is your animal a vertebrate?

- domesticated as a pet, and not for its meat

Is it a marsupial?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not a marsupial.

Hint: It actually has very few close living relatives.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it also commonly found in zoos?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Hmm... it wouldn't surprise me to find it in a zoo, but it's not something I would ordinarily think of as a "zoo animal".

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Further research suggests that at least larger zoos in the US typically have them.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a guinea pig?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

It is not guinea pig, which are rodents and commonly found in the US (and were also originally domesticated as food).

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

I do not know why I overlooked some of the clues there.

Is it a mongoose?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not a mongoose.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is it a primate of some sort?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

It is not a primate.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

So we have a:

- mammal
- smaller than an adult raccoon
- eats meat
- not commonly found in the US
- not a rodent or marsupial or primate
- domesticated sometimes, as a pet, and not for its meat
- not a mongooose or guinea pig
larger zoos in the US have them

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not Meerkat.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Does it belong to the order Carnivora?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

It may be found in cities (but that's not their usual habitat). It may be found in North America.

it is not a vulture, eagle, hawk or falcon.

It is not typically eaten.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a condor?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Nope, not a condor either.

By raptor, I mean a predator bird. This can be quite a broad classification, so I'd suggest trying to narrow the field down further.

is it a vertebrate?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Yes it is.

Posted by Blaze on :

Is it a reptile?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is not.

Here is something interesting from a book I just read called "Incredible Insects."

"Before they mate, male dance flies give the female a dead insect wrapped in silk. While the female is busy unwrapping her present, the male mates with her. This way he can avoid being eaten!"

Posted by Blaze on :

Otherwise, female will kill the mate. Oh, the femme fatale. Men have to be ingenious. [Wink]

Is it a bird?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

It is not a bird.

And yes, while the male dance fly is not carnivorous, the female is.

Here's something that might interest both geography and biology fans. The megadiverse countries are 17 nations identified by Conservation International as harboring the majority of Earth's species.

They are: Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, India, USA, Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, South Africa, Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, Australia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Posted by KryptonKid on :

Does it live in North America?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Not a cat.

Blaze, I had to look up Metatheria, and it is neither that nor a marsupial. (Here is a vague hint - I did double-check to make sure it was not a marsupial.)

It is not a cetacean.

It does not live in North America.

Is it a mammal?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Yes, it is.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it Australian?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Let's pause for as brief interlude...

I like to read about animals. In fact, I went to the library yesterday and I got books on skunks, camels, marsupials, snakes, pandas, and monkeys. The thing is - I usually get these books from the childrens' area. (The librarians think I am getting these books for my kids - I don't disillusion them.)

I don't necessarily want to read a 250 page book about skunks and about how some naturalist spent a year learning to be stinky. I do want to read a book that I can finish in half-an-hour and which tells me everything I want to know anyway.

Didja know there are no skunks in Africa, but there is an African polecat? It can spray its musk, but for some reason it isn't considered a skunk. Here is a cool website I found while researching the African Polecat. I liked it so much I wanted to share it.

Ok, interlude is over...

Yes it is a bird and it is two-legged.

Posted by Candlelight on :

No.

I suppose it would be easier if someone else came to play, lance.
[shrug]

So, sigh, hint: It's range is Africa, as mentioned earlier, the Middle East, India and some islands in that region.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it endangered?

Posted by Candlelight on :

No, but a lot of people wish it was, from their area, anyway.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Does it start with the letters A-E?

Posted by Candlelight on :

The second half of it's name does, it starts with a B.

Posted by Set on :

It's not a vampire bat, is it?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Can't be - they only live in Central and South America.

Does it climb trees?

To help - 2 part name, 1st starts A-L.
The 2nd name starts A-E.

Not a vampire bat.
They probably do climb trees, but I didn't notice that they're known for it.
I'll check.
[Yes]

PS - It's more likely that they might climb trees, rather than that, they probably climb trees.
It's quite the opposite, actually.

Is this animal ever domesticated?

Posted by Candlelight on :

It might be peticated but not domesticated.
[Yes]

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Does this animal normally live underground?

Posted by Candlelight on :

It's not like a mole, as far as living underground.

However, it does dig burrows, or steal them, and sleeps underground, on mostly bare ground, without the nesting stuff that some who sleep underground make.

So, I'm gonna say yes.
[Yes]

Is it a rodent?

Posted by Candlelight on :

No.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it a type of pig?

Posted by Candlelight on :

No.

This is a predator type who eats whatever it can get it's paws on but it DOES have prey that it likes to eat best, hense it's unpopularity in some parts of it's range.
[Yes]

Is it a bush baby?

Posted by Candlelight on :

No, but that's a cute guess.

You're probably somewhat familiar with this animal, IB.
It's not islandish, but fairly close on the mainland, IIRC.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Does the first part of the name start with A-E?

Sorry - really having trouble coming up with good questions.

Posted by Candlelight on :

Nope.
It's quite a fun animal, in looks and actions, though.
And it's first name starts with an F-L.

Is there a prominent animated version of this animal?

Posted by Candlelight on :

Oh, yes.
And a number of characters scattereed around, too.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is one of those cartoon versions a Hanna-Barbera character?

Posted by Candlelight on :

I don't think so, but I'll have to check.
H-B is awfully American, isn't it?

Posted by Candlelight on :

I need to correct my response to EDE, the animal has not appeared in an animated form, yet, that I know of.

It's appeared on National Geographic TV, which was then done again as an 'over speak' on the Internet and later as a book.
The animated form is in the works.

Other characterwise, it's name has been used as a nickname for people like sports figures and TV characters.

Hope that helps.
[Yes]
