Continuing from the last thread, a new Q:

The very first time we see Dawnstar time-travel without a time bubble, who is she traveling with and where do they go?

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Smallville, with Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl, Phantom Girl, Karate Kid and Blok?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

nope. Before that. And in the one you cite, she was in a time bubble.

Posted by Korbal on :

DC Comics Presents #13: Dawny adds her speed to Superman's to break the time barrier to witness the destiny of Jon Ross in saving Earth as an alien warlord of Nirvyn.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

you got it, Korbal!

Given her sporadic usage over her first couple years, I think that was the first time I ever read a LSH story with her in it.

Korbal's Q.

Posted by Korbal on :

What is the unique connection between the Legion and a recent Disney Channel program?

Posted by Future on :

Calum Worthy, who played Lightning Lad on Smallville, is one of the stars of the new Disney Channel program "Austin & Ally"? He's also guested on a few other Disney programs.

...don't be too afraid. I recognized him on a commercial the other day but had to do the research online to figure out just what the show was.

Posted by Korbal on :

Ya got half of the answer right...

Posted by Korbal on :

Along with Calum Worthy, Andy Milder (from the Legion cartoon) also appears, thus "Austin & Ally" brought together the two actors who have portrayed Lightning Lad. Since Future got half the answer, he is up next...

Posted by Future on :

Which active Legionnaire only clocked in a whopping one panel during the entire four issues of "The Universo Project"?

Hint: Despite the fact he comes close, it's actually NOT Invisible Kid II.

Posted by Xben on :

Love this story, but don't remember the answer. So I'll guess...Magnetic Kid?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Colossal Boy?

Posted by KryptonKid on :

Blok?

Posted by Future on :

No to all of the above, though many (especially Colossal Boy) did little more than be mind-controlled background candy.

Hint #2: The Legionnaire in question didn't appear in the four issues prior to this panel either. That's probably the longest absence this Legionnaire has ever had under Levitz's pen. Yes, some of those issues may include other parts of the Universo Project.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Phantom Girl?

Posted by Xben on :

Timber Wolf

Posted by Future on :

Ibby has it! Phantom Girl clocked in only one appearance during the whole of the Universo Project. She arrived as mind-controlled back-up with Shrinking Violet and Wildfire's away team, but didn't appear again after that. She was absent from the team shot where Saturn Girl was welcomed back to the Legion as well.

After seeing so much of Tinya the last two volumes of the Legion, I was surprised she was absent from a Levitz storyline.

You're up, IB.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I guessed it was Tinya because I remembered that Ultra Boy was without her for most of his appearances in that storyline. I also knew she wasn't one of the Legionnaires who attacked Brainy, Dreamy and Cham in Brainy's lab.

She did make a nice comeback during the Starfinger storylines, though.

Ok, next Q:

By the end of Legion Worlds, we'd found out what had happened to all the non-Lost Legionnaires (who were members prior to the Rift) except three. Which three were those?

Posted by Xben on :

Gates
Sensor
XS

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Nope, Xben. We knew what XS had been up to after the Rift.

Gear

Posted by Xben on :

Gates
Sensor
Star Boy

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I'm not counting Gear because he wasn't a Legionnaire pre-rift.

Star Boy is in the same boat as XS: we ended Legion Worlds knowing where they were, though we didn't know if they survived.

The 3rd Legionnaire I'm thinking of was also entirely absent from Legion Worlds, besides a couple of flashback shots.

Thunder

Posted by Xben on :

Thunder left the Legion just prior to the rift, didn't she? Hated that character, loved that she was exited in a very effective way without any lines of dialogue and hardly any panel time being taken up.

I'm just guessing through the Legionnaires that I can't recall from Legion Worlds, although I haven't read that series in a long time...

Gates
Sensor
Violet

Sensor
Kinetix

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Kent has it. Thunder was last been before the Rift; the assumption was that she was still with her family, but it was never confirmed. I agree with you, Xben - her one-page exit was even one of her best scenes.

Since Thunder and Star Boy left just prior to the Rift, I still considered them for the question. Apologies, Xben, if I caused confusion though; I should probably have said "Pre-Damned Legionnaires" instead.

Violet was seen in #3 with Cosmic Boy, Invisible Kid and Chuck Taine as the Subs.

Kinetix was seen in #1 as a Science Police officer.

XS and Star Boy were the stars of #4, and the issue ended with them being stranded on a Xanthu that was being invaded by Robotica. Dreamer and the Amazers managed to escape.

As for the rest of the team:

M'Onel and Triad were seen in #1; Mon as an active hero on Earth and Triad taking over Brande Industries.

#2 had Spark visiting her family.

#3 also had Dyrk Magz, the former Magno, as a Sci Cop on Braal.

#5 had Karate Kid and Ferro stranded on the spiritual haven that is Steeple.

#6 had Apparition joining Timber Wolf on Rimbor.

Over to you, Kent.

Who was the first Legionnaire to defeat Universo single-handedly?

Posted by Shining Son on :

I thought Rond Vidar defeated him the first time. I don't remember it being single-handed, and he wasn't an honorary Legionnaire yet, but I'm sticking with that guess in case it's a purposefully misleading question. [Smile]

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

he was not a legionnaire yet, honorary or otherwise, nor was it single-handed.

Supergirl?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

correctomondo!

In an issue of Superman Family. The Legion turned up standing in formation in front of HQ, as super-teams seemed wont to do at the time, just as Kara put the bop on ol' monocle-face.

What super-team did Vrenn G'ondd fail to join, and why?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

No guesses?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Okay, the team is the Legion of Super-Villains.

I'll give the question to anyone who can tell me why he did not join.

Posted by Xben on :

I have no idea, but at a wild guess...

Because he was really Chameleon Boy in disguise?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not quite.

Hint: The character is mentioned, but doesn't appear, in Adventure #372.

Posted by Xben on :

OK, was he intercepted by the Science Police or the Legion so that Superboy, Chameleon Boy, Timber Wolf and Chemical King could "accidentally" run into the LSV representative and try to infiltrate the team instead?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

That's good enough. He was imprisoned before he could meet the LSV Recruiter.

Posted by Xben on :

I was just rereading LSH Archives Volume 2, and came across "The Doom of the Super-Heroes" - the one where Mask Man basically kills everybody.

If you remember that one, the splash page (a symbolic one, basically an internal cover, as was common for the series in those days) showed Mask Man spinning a wheel with the different Legionnaires faces, in order to decide who he would kill next.

There are 15 Legionnaires shown on that wheel. By my count, we'd seen 20 different members on the team up to this point.

This is a two part question:
a. Who are the five members who are missing from that page?
b. For which two members that are on that page does that image represent the only picture they have in their second appearance in a Legion story?

Posted by Blacula on :

Guess time -

a) Shrinking Violet, Bouncing Boy, Dream Girl, Star Boy, Invisible Kid

b) Karate Kid, Princess Projectra

Posted by Xben on :

Hmm, none of the those guesses are correct. In fact, three people you guessed hadn't debuted yet.

Posted by Future on :

Guessing with a little bit of spotty memory of the story itself:

a) Colossal Boy, Matter-Eater Lad, Phantom Girl, Supergirl, Triplicate Girl

b) Element Lad, Star Boy

Posted by Xben on :

5 of your 7 guesses are correct!

One hint: Remember that the question cited 20 Legionnaires who had joined the team up to that point - not all the then-active Legionnaires.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

a) Lightning Lad, Supergirl, Matter-Eater Lad, Element Lad, Pete Ross

b) Phantom Girl, Star Boy

Posted by Future on :

a) Element Lad, Lightning Lad, Matter-Eater Lad, Phantom Girl, Supergirl

b) Star Boy, Triplicate Girl

Posted by Xben on :

IB had 4 out of 7 in the right slots.

Future, you've got 5 out of 7.

You've cottoned onto the fact that Lightning Lad wouldn't be there, as he was dead at the time, nor Supergirl, who just wasn't around all the time. Pete Ross wasn't there either, but I'm not counting him in my list of 20 Legionnaires since he didn't actually join the team as a proper Legionnaire.

Of the other two characters who don't appear in the panel, all three were definitely "active Legionnaires." Two did not appear all that often at the time, but the third was a major player in the story and in the series in general, so it's a bit of mystery that they don't show up.

Of the two who do make their second appearance in a Legion story on that panel, one had debuted a long time earlier, and the other only a couple of stories earlier.

a) Lightning Lad, Supergirl, Triplicate Girl, Matter-Eater Lad, Brainiac Five

b) Element Lad, Star Boy

Posted by Xben on :

IB has 4 right.

EDE has 5 right.

No one has yet correctly guessed the character that I described as a "major player in the story and the series in general"

I'll confirm that both characters in Part B are male.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

a) Lightning Lad, Supergirl, Colossal Boy, Phantom Girl, Matter-Eater Lad

b) Element Lad, Star Boy

Posted by Xben on :

IB, you've got 6 this time - and still you don't have the "major player" character correct.

Posted by stuorstew on :

a) Lightning Lad, Supergirl, Colossal Boy, Matter-Eater Lad, Mon-El

b) Element Lad, Star Boy

Posted by Xben on :

You've got five, but now all seven correct answers have been guessed since the question was posed.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

a) Lightning Lad, Supergirl, Phantom Girl, Mon-el, Matter-Eater Lad

b) Element Lad, Star Boy

Posted by Xben on :

That's it.

As an interesting curiosity, I've noticed that the Legionnaires who show up in (I think) the next story, where the Substitute Heroes are declaring war on the Legion, are the exact same 15 characters from the Mask Man splash page.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Good one, Xben.

Which 6 Legionnaires once traveled out of the timestream in a quantum sphere?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Clue: Now, who could generate a quantum sphere? Hmm...

Posted by Xben on :

Yeah, okay, uh...Kid Quantum II, Chameleon, Saturn Girl, Brainiac 5, LeViathon (Violet), and Ultra Boy.

Almost complete guess.

Posted by Future on :

If I'm thinking of the right storyline:

Ferro, Karate Kid, Live Wire, Monstress, Umbra, and Violet

Kid Quantum II powered the transport, but she didn't go with them.

Which Legionnaire was once criticized by another for their choice in leggings/pants?

Not Colossal Boy.

Hint: The statement was hypocritical considering the Legionnaire doing the judging.

Dream Girl?

Posted by KryptonKid on :

Dream Boy

Posted by Future on :

Krypton Kid got it, though IB contributed. Dream Boy was once criticized by the ghost of Dream Girl during the Waid/Kitson days for his choice in legwear - namely, hers.

All yours, KK.

Posted by KryptonKid on :

IB definitely reminded me of Nura's comment to Dream Boy questioning his thinking that his copy of her pants was a good idea.

Continuing with the threeboot theme, what two things did Mr. Kem eat on Winath during the search for Cosmic Boy story arc?

[Dream Boy]

Wow, that one must have been pulled from my subconscious because it was really just a guess.

Anyway, next question:

From a publishing perspective, which Legionnaire's parents traveled back to the time of Superboy a full 40 years before the Legionnaire ever did?

I have no idea but I am thoroughly intrigued / confused. You say from a publishing perspective - does that mean it was published in 1918? Or maybe that in the story, it took place in 1918? But it was in Superboy's time - so it was published during a point in real history when Superboy's time would have been around 1918? So maybe it was in a story written around 1940? Just speculating here.

As I said, I have no idea, so here's a guess that doesn't really fit with my above ramblings, but picking a hero with 20th century connections: Brainiac 5.

It would, assuming that the Legionnaire in question first went to Superboy's time in a comic published in 1958 (hint... they didn't [Wink] )

Basically, I'm saying that some Legionnaire's first time travel trip to Superboy's time took place in a comic published 40 years after a comic in which their parents had done so.

(Two other hints - I phrased it as "Superboy's time" to avoid confusion over the 20th vs. 21st century; secondly, it was specifically Superboy's time, not Supergirl's - this individual had previously been to her time).

Oh, and , no... not Brainiac-5.

Ah, I see how I misread this. I was assuming it was before <i>any</i> Legionnaires had made the trip.

I'll think some more.

Posted by KryptonKid on :

I still don't understand the question. I can't get past the fact that, from a publiher's POV, the Legion first met Superboy in 1958. But I'll guess CosmicBoy.

Yeah, it's a little tricky because the question has two different reference scales - real world time (40 years publishing difference between the two stories) and comic book time (both the parents of the Legionnaire, and then later the Legionnaire, both time traveled to Smallville during the time of Superboy).

I'll try to make it more simple:

- Once, a comic book was published showing someone's parents time-traveling back to Smallville.

- 40 years later, a different comic was published that showed their child, who was a Legionnaire, time-traveling back to Smallville.

- It was the first time that Legionnaire had ever done so.

Who was the Legionnaire?

P.S. - not Cos.

Posted by Exnihil on :

whoops... double post

Posted by KryptonKid on :

Saturn Girl

Posted by Xben on :

Yeah, I was confused at first, but the key is that we're not talking about when the founders first paid a visit, we're talking about a 40 year gap between the parents and another specific Legionnaire. This means that the earliest we could have seen this Legionnaire visit Superboy's time is 1998, 40 years after the first Legion story, but it's probably even later than that, since there wasn't even a "Superboy" at the time. (I guess "young Clark Kent's time" might be the same as "Superboy's time" though.)

So if I'm interpreting this correctly that means that any Legionnaire we ever saw go back to Smallville in Superboy's time prior to 1998 is automatically out.

Off the top of my head, that eliminates the founders, Ultra Boy, Star Boy, Blok, Dawnstar, Karate Kid, Shadow Lass, Mon-El, Triplicate Girl, Phantom Girl and I'm sure heaps of others.

Of course my key problem is that I can't remember any seeing any Legion parents visiting Smallville at all. The latest that the parent's trip could have been show would be the early 1970's. So that would seem to eliminate characters were created after that.

Anyway, after all that, I'll guess Colossal Boy, because he fits my logic so far and because I can remember that his parents have actually be seen on panel!

Posted by Exnihil on :

Outstanding logic, Xben! Everything you said above is correct... except the answer. [Wink]

Colossal Boy travelled back to Smallville in Adventure Comics 351, back in '66, which would make the "40 year gap" occur in '26, prior to the start of DC comics.

Not Saturn Girl, either, KK.

P.S. - It was definitely during a period when there was a "Superboy" as opposed to just a "young Clark Kent"

Posted by Blacula on :

I'm also having a bit of trouble understanding this question... well, I actually get it now after Exnihil's second-to-last post - I just don't get how the situation can be possible - but that's why I really like this question. It's a mind-teaser!

---

Adding to Xben's detective work, I think we can eliminate every Legionnaire invented after Chemical King since the oldest of them, Wildfire, is only 39 years old - thus, none of those Legionnaires could have had parents go back in time before they were invented UNLESS those parents pre-dated their invention. But the only character I can think of that fits that bill is XS, and then - only her Mum, not her Dad.

But since I think most of the Adventure-era members went back to Smallville, who does that leave us with? I have no idea.

So I'll guess - Magnetic Kid.

Posted by KryptonKid on :

Ayla

Posted by Exnihil on :

Neither Ayla nor Pol.

Posted by KryptonKid on :

I'll steal Blacula's idea and say XS.

[XS] [Superboy]

Posted by Shining Son on :

Seems to me Supergirl's parents were first published early enough, so that's going to be my guess.

I took a guess at XS too before reading Blacula's post, and came up with the same problem, I didn't think Dawn Allen was time traveling with a husband or boyfriend.

I can't think of any second-generation Legionnaires and the only "DCU legacy" Legionnaires I can think of are XS, Brainiac 5, and Supergirl (okay not really a Super-legacy, but rather a contemporary brand extension [Smile] ).

So if it isn't Supergirl, or some other DCU legacy character I'm missing, I'm guessing the parents weren't created specifically as the Legionnaire's parents, but rather the Legionnaire was created from the parents, or they were created independently and some writer along the way decided "hey, wouldn't it be cool if those two throwaway characters were _____'s parents?"

Posted by Exnihil on :

I'm not sure about the time-traveling exploits of Supergirl's parents (they well could have visited Smallville, I'm just not aware if they did or not) but a quick bit of research shows that Supergirl traveled back to Superboy-era Smallville in Superboy #80, April of 1960. So even if they did possibly precede her, there's not enough of a buffer to have it had been 40 years prior.

And neither is it XS, as I'm fairly certain her father was only created during the Archie era.

As another hint, I will say that both of the scenarios described above are false. The two people were created specifically as ???'s parents.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Well then as Blacula says, it has to be a Legionnaire that came before Wildfire.

(Unless there's a character that's been around a long time but only became a Legionnaire later?)

Posted by Xben on :

There are characters who were around for a long time and became Legionnaires later - Polar Boy and White Witch both fit that bill. Whether their parents ever visited Superboy's time, though, I have no idea.

Another character with famous parents, or at least a famous Dad is Chameleon Boy, and he did visit Superboy sometime in the 1970's, during that Blood Crystal story. I can't remember if he visited before that, and I don't recall RJ Brande going back to Superboy's time really early on at all. But whatever, I'll guess Chameleon Boy.

Posted by Xben on :

Oops, I just realized how my guess completely violates my logic - the 1970's is the latest the parents could have made the trip, not the Legionnaire. So I will change my guess to White Witch.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I'll go with Polar Boy because, now that you mention it, it sounds kind of familiar.

I was thinking Rond Vidar, but the question said parents plural and I don't think we ever knew of Rond's mom.

Posted by Xben on :

Rond crossed my mind too, and Universo did a bunch of time traveling in his first story, it's implied, but not to Superboy's time. And I don't know when we've seen Rond travel to Superboy's time in recent years (or ever, I guess). But then it's a good guess. I was wondering if it might have to do with a "non-standard" Legionnaire - like Rond, or Nemesis Kid, Alaktor, etc. Anyway, the question has got me thinking, that's for sure.

Yep. What do you do if you are the Silver Age Superboy, and your foster parents become possessed by alien flame beings?

Why, the most natural thing in the world... you summon the parents of a passing acquaintance from 1000 years hence to pose as your new foster parents, thereby tricking the flame beings to possess this new couple and then... right at the moment of possession... you have them activate their natural cold-generation powers, killing the aliens:

 -

All of that took place in Superboy #148, in 1968, a full 40 years before Polar Boy himself ever travelled to that same period (in Legion of Three Worlds) to retrieve a lock of Luthor's hair.

As I mentioned earlier, Polar Boy had previously travelled to the 20th century, but that had been to Supergirl's time period, in Adventure 351.

Bit of a tricky one, but Eryk got it.

I claim partial credit for loophole-identification!

I was wondering why Xben mentioned Polar Boy fit my loophole, but didn't actually guess him. [Smile]

Posted by Xben on :

Just because I didn't remember anything about his parents going back in time, so I guessed White Witch instead, who I equally didn't remember. Sadly, if it was written before 1980 and it isn't in the Archives, I'm pretty unaware of it.

Letters pages are full of interesting tidbits.

While reading through some old Adventures, I came across a letter from future comic book writer Mark Evanier. In his letter, Mark

a. protests the death of Ferro Lad.
b. supports the death of Ferro Lad.
c. protests the expulsion of Star Boy.
d. supports the expulsion of Star Boy.
e. makes a suggestion for a future Legionnaire.
f. lists Matter-Eater Lad as his favorite member.
g. praises Curt Swan for his art on "The Evil Hand of the Luck Lords".
h. takes the writers to task for not using Element Lad's powers more creatively.
i. two of the above
j. none of the above

Wrong on both counts.

. . . though someone else did list ME Lad as his favorite and wished he were in more stories.

h. takes the writers to task for not using Element Lad's powers more creatively.

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

No . . . although another letter writer pointed out how Jan could have saved the day in previous stories and Mort agreed to pass on his suggestions to the writers.

And I'll go with

b. supports the death of Ferro Lad.

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

From Adventure # 356:

quote:
Dear Editor:
I do hope Ferro Lad will not return, as I'd much rather see a Legion with a constantly changing membership. The entire idea would be unusual in comics -- expendable heroes. When your favorite Legionnaire's in trouble, readers will not be sure he'll be saved as they are with Superman and Batman, who aren't going to be killed off for anything short of the destruction of DC. (Perish the thought!)
--Mark Evanier, Los Angeles, Calif.

Take it away, XBen.

Posted by Shining Son on :

So essentially, Mark Evanier proposed Suicide Squad back in 1967 in a letter column? [Smile]

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

^^Another unacknowledged fan contribution! [Smile]

Mark's letter stands out in that it's the only one published in that issue in favor of Ferro Lad's death. Every other letter contains the usual reactions of "How could you . . .?" or "I've lost my best friend" or "I guess we'll never see his face unmasked now."

Perhaps Mark's more reasonable counterargument played a role in why Ferro Lad was never brought back.

You know, as many times as I've read that issue, I've always interpreted the all-caps phrase ". . . LIKE THIS SOLAR STUNNER FROM THE MOON TITAN" to mean the weapon belonged to a villain called "The Moon Titan" or to some really powerful but unnamed foe who happened to come from earth's moon.

I didn't realize until now that the weapon came from the heavenly body known as Titan . . .

Which Legionnaire was apparently still allowed to vote on whether or not to undertake missions even after leaving the team?

BONUS if you call me on what mission he or she might have voted.

Randomly going to guess ... Bouncing Boy?

Also randomly guessing - Matter-Eater Lad

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I think Future has it, and that the mission in question was the investigation of the records that led to the Legion participation in the War between Krypton and Earth.

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

And Future does have it, with Eryk providing the mission.

Adventure # 333, Page 3, panel two, shows the Legionnaires voting as to whether or not to undertake the mission. One of the Legionnaires whose picture is depicted is clearly Bouncing Boy, even though he had lost his power and been relegated to the Legion Reserve a full year earlier.

By the way, if he votes is unclear since the art is obscured by Triplicate Girl's dialogue balloon.

That sounded like Adventure era logic, and Chuck seemed like a logical choice as one of the first Legionnaires to leave the team for extended time.

Which Legionnaire once used "Icons of Traynok" as an exclamation?

Duo Damsel

Posted by Future on :

It was neither Shady or Duo Damsel.

I'll give a few hints in the form of the complete quote, which eliminates two additional Legionnaires and may give a hint toward the story.

"REEP! Icons of Traynok! That fist belonged to Colossal Boy! Why on Earth would he -"

All good guesses, but none are correct. I'll provide another clue, which hints both toward the story as well as eliminates another potential Legionnaire.

Hint #2: After Cham was felled by Colossal Boy's fist, the quoted Legionnaire was then knocked out by Lightning Lad's lightning.

Shrinking Violet

Not Shrinking Violet either!

Hint #3: Despite using the word "Earth," the Legionnaire in question isn't originally from the planet.

Jeepers! I'm pretty sure I know the story, but I can't remember who is in it at all!

Er... Dawnstar?

Posted by Future on :

It's also not Dawnstar! Two new hints:

Hint #4: Of the 8 Legionnaires guessed, only 3 were even in the story - Saturn Girl, Shrinking Violet, and Superboy.

Hint #5: It's not unbelievable that this Legionnaire would have been hanging out with Chameleon Boy when they were attacked. They've worked together on several occasions and would continue to do so.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Okay, then, Phantom Girl.

Posted by Future on :

EDE has it. Phantom Girl was the utterer of "Icons of Traynok!" in S&LSH #234. To my knowledge it's the only time the phrase was ever used. Was it a shout-out to possible Bgztl culture? She had talked about Bgztlian politics fascinatingly enough earlier in the issue. Perhaps we'll never know...

That's pretty impressive, lance, but not quite right. You have four of the five characters I was looking for. One character that you have right is mismatched with who he portrayed (which isn't really part of the question, but might provide a clue). Carefully reading the question might help.

Proty II was actually werewolf Olsen, I think. I don't remember which one Chameleon Boy was, but he was there. The other three were Bouncing Boy , Cosmic Boy and Colossal Boy.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Xben has it. Chameleon Boy was actually Elastic Lad. I believe this story was actually the first appearance of Proty II.

While lance was right that Mon-El played the Controller, the alien who kidnaps Jimmy in the story, that wasn't actually one of Jimmy's transformations.

Posted by Future on :

I recall both stories, though I don't recall specific issue numbers.

The first, I think, was when the team had to fight Jungle King and his Legion of Super-Monsters. In this instance, Saturn Girl relented.

The other I can think of is the infamous 'Planetary Chance Machine' issue, where the Legion was selecting team members to break into a guarded citadel. Saturn Girl resented the notion this time and insisted on her proper place on the team.

Posted by Xben on :

You've got them both, Future (at least, both of the ones I'm aware of). Especially amusing since it came during Saturn Girl's term as Legion leader. Perhaps could have imagined hearing it during Brainy's term as leader, if you wanted to take the character in that direction, but not when he was talking to his leader.

I'd like to see this get folded into a "Secret Origin" style retcon.

Posted by Future on :

I think the only reason he could even try to dismiss Saturn Girl the second time was, as first bonked by a planet, Brainy was 'mission leader'. It is pretty laughable that in the Jungle King story he told his own leader to sit out.

Ferro Lad, Karate Kid, Nemesis Kid, and Princess Projectra are an example of a group of four or more joining the Legion simultaneously. You'd think that'd be rare!

...well, actually. It's not that rare. Name FOUR other 'groups of four or more' who joined the Legion, or a branch of the Legion, at the same time.

The Levitz Five, Part II: Harmonia, Comet Queen, Dragonwing, Chemical Kid, Glorith

Posted by Future on :

You got four of the ones I was thinking of, EDE! Great job. Some others:

Team SW6 technically admitted Computo, Catspaw, Dragonmage, and the adult Chameleon Boy on the same day when they became officially sanctioned.

Gazelle, Night Girl, Sizzle, and Turtle joined different branches of the Threeboot Legion on the same day. Sun Boy rejoined that day too.

For acceptable stretches, Superboy, Supergirl, Star Boy, Dream Girl, and Bouncing Boy were all readmitted on the same day in the Adventure era.

Live Wire, XS, Element Lad, Ultra Boy, and M'Onel all joined or rejoined the Postboot team when the draft was abolished.

Your go, Eryk.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I almost used the SW6 one, but wasn't completely sure Cham joined at the same time as the others.

Depending on what counts as a "branch" of the Legion, the formation of either the Subs, the Subs II, or the Super-Pets could count as well, though I figured those might be stretches.

Posted by Future on :

It's admittedly a little vague. The only thing I have to go by is Cham joined the kids the same issue they set up their new HQ. The meeting therein once it was rebuilt introduced Danielle and the others to the SW6ers (as if they hadn't been hanging around already helping them rebuild) so I'd like to count that as induction day.

Very truthful. I included the "branch" term to help include the Threeboot Auxiliary and even the Subs if need be. I wasn't going to be too picky. There's a surprising amount of mass inductions on the teams.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

The Postboot Legion rarely had members join solo, too. I think before DNA, only Ferro, Monstress and Thunder joined by themselves - all the others joined in pairs, trios or groups.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Spark also joined solo. And Superboy (Kon-El, not that he had that name yet), if you consider him a member (I do).

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Arguably Brainy joined solo, since, while drafted at the same time as others, he showed up later.

Anyway, new question coming later today.

Match each Legionnaire with the manner in which he or she was killed (temporarily, as it turned out) by Mask Man:

a. Brainiac 5
b. Chameleon Boy
c. Colossal Boy
d. Cosmic Boy
e. Element Lad
f. Invisible Kid
g. Lightning Lass
h. Mon-El
i. Phantom Girl
j. Saturn Girl
k. Shrinking Violet
l. Ultra Boy

1. exposure to an element from another dimension
2. frozen
3. hit by a falling asteroid
4. lab explosion
5. petrified
6. poison air
7. ship crash
8. struck by lightning/electricity

And, yes, there is an uneven number of choices because Mask Man used some methods to kill more than one Legionnaire.

Best memory guess:

a. Brainiac 5 - lab explosion
b. Chameleon Boy - poison air
c. Colossal Boy - hit by a falling asteroid
d. Cosmic Boy - struck by lightning/electricity

f. Invisible Kid
g. Lightning Lass - petrified

j. Saturn Girl - lab explosion

They were a homage to the Subs, in the Legends of the Legion mini. So Polar Boy, Night Girl, Color Kid, Chlorophyll Kid, Infectious Lass and Fire Lad

*Besides Polar Boy & Night Girl's proper appearance in the tryout issue and subsequent cameos of PB & Infectious Lass as Cadets, they made an appearance as older teens in the Phil Jimenez poster in LSH SF&O 1: http://www.legionwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=File:LSHSecretFiles1-RollCallPinup.jpg

Because it was a homage, not the "real" Calamity King - hell, as I mentioned, the real Lydda Jath appeared earlier in Legionnaires #43 & 49 (the picture above is from the latter), yet there's a mini-Night Girl amongst the LotL kids!

Posted by Blacula on :

^ I remembered Lydda's previous appearance (she was the one I referenced in my question) but because I don't like the idea of there being these 6 kids hanging out in the Postboot universe who look and dress exactly like Preboot characters, but who aren't the Postboot versions of those characters, I've always reconciled these two appearances of Lydda (and Drura later on) as being the same character.

Maybe she was there gathering info to help the Subs goals? In fact, maybe those kids in the LotL series ARE the Postboot Subs since, other than Polar Boy, I don't remember it ever being confirmed who was on that team.

I've always just chalked her more youthful appearance here down to artistic interpretation.

So with that in mind, I would have preferred the 'Calamity King' here be 'Eryk'.

Brainiac 5 and Saturn Girl, panel-hogging?

There were five Legionnaires! Cos was being hit on by four girls; Live Wire was fuming at Imra, who was still laughing about the Mr Ed trick; Apparition was looking at the guy beside her and Triad was in three minds about giving her phone number to the guy beside her (T-Purple did in the next panel to T-Orange's horror).

(Spock, meanwhile, was talking to Data. In-line behind the Three Stooges. LSH v4 #62, page 4 panel 2).

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

I didn't know Spock appeared in LSH # 62. I'm thinking of a much earlier story.

And it's not Brainy and Saturn Girl, either.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Hmm... "very timely", huh?

Rokk and Lydda, stealing a pot of gold?

Still wrong.

Okay, when I said "timely," think of a movie in current release.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Chuck and Lu, getting married?

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

Close enough!

Actually, they're running into each other's arms after she has just gotten back from a mission. (This is just before Chuck proposes and just before she discovers her "twin" is missing.)

The issue is SUPERBOY # 200, Cockrum era -- three issues before Grell took over (hence, lance being "warm").

The other two guest appearances are by J'Onn J'Onzz and Tars Tarkas of Barsoom (the latter currently featured in the John Carter film), who attend the wedding.

But Spock drops in earlier in the story -- on Page 5, Panel 1, reacting to Chuck and Lu's public display of affection (to which he is no doubt thinking, "Fascinating").

Take it away, EDE!

Fun fact: I got this fact from the Help File, so I was worried when I saw cmk answering!

I try not to refer to it when I answer here.

The Proteans?

Not the Proteans.

I always assume you have the whole thing memorized!

Maybe I did way back when...It's been almost 10 years since I worked on the thing.

The Khunds?

Not the Khunds. Far more obscure.

Ah - now I remember - Zyzans.

Someone for some reason has a thread about them, which is listed in the "recent posts" as soon as I log in. Suddenly, I was reminded.

Was that thread what made you think of this for a question?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

D'oh - you STARTED that thread.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

The Zyzans it is! I was going to add that fact to the thread, then I needed a trivia question!

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

During the 5YL era, when Timber Wolf was lost in time, he was brought back to the 30th century by Lydda accidentally running a theoretical time-retrieval program created by Brainiac 5 to get him back.

There was a second program that she could have accidentally run in the same manner. Who was that one supposed to retrieve?

Posted by Future on :

Hmm. I know the story but am blanking on the alternative. Phantom Girl?

Posted by Xben on :

Maybe Ultra Boy?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

It was neither Phantom Girl nor Ultra Boy.

Valor?

Yep, specifically, the SW6 Valor.

Take it away, KK.

No, it is a show that has already (21st century)been on for decades.

60 Minutes?

Posted by KryptonKid on :

Not 60 minutes, but in the same general genre.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Is it Meet the Press?

Posted by KryptonKid on :

It is Meet the Press! It was Leland's first appearance and he was off on one of his rants.

New question coming soon!

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

After expelling all the other Legionnaires so that she can take on Zaryan the Conquerer by herself, Saturn Girl is shown using the powers of five of her fellow Legionnaires simultaneously. Name those five.

Posted by KryptonKid on :

Lightning Lad
Sun Boy
Cosmic Boy
Triplicate Girl
Ultra Boy

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

You have four correct.

Posted by KryptonKid on :

Lightning Lad
Sun Boy
Cosmic Boy
Triplicate Girl
and....Shrinking Violet?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Still four correct.

Posted by Xben on :

Ultra Boy
Lightning Lad
Sun Boy
Cosmic Boy
Shrinking Violet

Posted by KryptonKid on :

Lightning Lad
Sun Boy
Cosmic Boy
Triplicate Girl

Colossal Boy?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

That's it.

Saturn Girl is split into three bodies, each grown to giant size, with each using one of Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, and Sun Boy's powers.

Is it the concept of a "Deputy Leader"?

Neither transuits nor deputy leader are the answer!

Ultra-Boy?

Posted by Shining Son on :

Ultra Boy was my first guess too, as making a diamond sounds like a Superboy trick and Ultra Boy's powers were individually stronger than Superboy's, as long as he was using only on power.

Then I remembered Star Boy also was a mega-powerhouse for a short while.

And then: "Oh yeah, electrical vision!" Don't remember how that made a super jewel though.

One of many powers that didn't last.

It was indeed Star Boy.

What was considered bad luck by the people on Saturn Girl's homeworld?

A double-ring in the sky?

Posted by Shining Son on :

Not quite, though it is ring-related.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Posted by KryptonKid on :

Ring worm?

Well, it certainly isn't good luck.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Neither passing through the rings nor ringworm.

Posted by KryptonKid on :

It is bad luck not to wear a symbol of Saturn, yes?

Posted by Shining Son on :

If it is I haven't read about it. Do you remember which issued that was?

Posted by KryptonKid on :

I was guessing, so I assume that it wasn't the answer you were looking for.

Is it bad luck to leave the planet?

Posted by Shining Son on :

Ah, with the "yes?" it seemed you were so sure. [Smile]

No, leaving the planet is fine too.

Neither of those.

Posted by KryptonKid on :

Get married naked?

(not joking this time. I'm thinking wedding ring and Winethian customs. Still, just a guess.)

Posted by Shining Son on :

No, and I will say that it's related specifically to Saturn's rings, not just the word rings. I wasn't being deliberately ambiguous there.

However I did ambiguously say "Saturn Girl's homeworld", though at this point I don't think that's much of a hint, so I'll come right out and say this was before they "clarified" that Saturn Girl and her people are on Titan, not Saturn itself.

What was said to be unlucky was a phenomenon that was depicted in the art as being seen while standing on Saturn.

Posted by KryptonKid on :

Standing in the shadow of the rings?

Posted by Shining Son on :

Time for a hint I think: it involves Saturn's rings and moons.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Is it something like "three moons appearing in the sky at the same time as the ring"?

Posted by Shining Son on :

Very close. Has nothing to do with the number, but it is about rings and moons appearing at the same time.

Great gravy! I forgot again.

Er... by my reckoning, the Legionnaires have faced opponents from every (non-dwarf) planet in the solar system, or from a moon of the planet, except one. Which planet has never been the home of any Legion opponents?

Figured I'd join the wild guess club. Uranus?

That's right!

For the record:

KK fights for a boxing championship on Mercury in the Adventure era, plus there's some weird fire creatures or something from there during S/LSH.

Venus is home to Cosmic King.

Earth is home to Earth-Man and lots of others.

Mars is home to Starfinger II, as well as the evil Dr. Landro.

Jupiter's moon Ganymede is home to Sugyn and Vibrex.

Titan is home to Saturn Queen and Esper Lass, among others.

And, finally, Neptune is home to Ron-Karr.

Neither zero nor 172, at least based on SLSH #215, which I'm using as my source.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

1?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

1 is correct!

Posted by Shining Son on :

Yeah, well, I guess I'd have to accept an actual Legion comic over a source that says Winath, Durla, Imsk, Rimbor, Braal, Colu, Naltor, Trom, Bismoll, Xanthu, Cargg, and Bgztl all orbit the same star. [Smile]

Posted by Xben on :

What source was that?

Posted by Shining Son on :

Hard to explain, just ran across it surfing the web, "Galaxiki: a fictional galaxy anyone can edit".

Near as I can figure, people make up stars and planets for fun, and someone made up the system for the star "Leejin".

Posted by Shining Son on :

Hence my labeling it "apocryphal".

Not that the original Winath, Durla, etc. aren't also fictional...

okay, then.

What 20th century literary work does Tasmia Mallor consider to be a classic?

The Judas Contract?

Just guessing - maybe this is from the Threeboot?

Shiny, it is nothing with an obvious thematic name connection.
Xben, it is not from Threeboot.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Long Dark Teatime of the Soul

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Nope. Again, see my note that it is NOT an obvious thematic reference. NO Dark, Night, Shadow or anything of the sort in the title.

Posted by Shining Son on :

I'm trying to ignore that. You seem to think the fun is in being right and not in making as many wrong guesses on the theme as possible.

I was hoping to make them increasingly unlikely as I went along, but it turns out there aren't as many titles in classic literature on that theme as you'd think.

So no gradual buildup to Dark Shadows. [Frown]

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

keep in mind, 'classic' from Tasmia's point of view - not necessarily ours.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Keep in mind, not necessarily trying for the right answer!

And dammit! The ones I'm pulling from memory keep turning out to be plays.

not Harry Potter, but it does begin with the letter H.

Hunger Games?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

nope. this book predates both Harry Potter and Hunger Games, but by less than a decade or two (respectively). And has not been made into a movie (although there is an unrelated movie of the same name).

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Eryk, what story is this from?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I believe it's from Superman #172.

Posted by Xben on :

What were the circumstances behind the first on-panel use of Element Lad's powers that came after his debut story? In other words, what was he turning to what, and why? (I'm basing this only on stories that appeared in the Archives - I don't know if there might be another minor appearance somewhere else).

Posted by Xben on :

No guesses? I'll change it, to make it more guessable...

The first time we saw Element Lad use his powers after his debut appearance, he was changing something to help <BLANK> make a <BLANK>. Fill in the two blanks.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

to help Brainy make a flight ring?

Posted by Shining Son on :

It does seem likely to be Brainy, whatever the object may be.

Posted by Xben on :

No, it wasn't Brainy, and it wasn't a flight ring. It was a Legionnaire, though.

I'll give some more info and repeat the question:

The first time we saw Element Lad use his powers after his debut, he was changing lead into gold in order to help <BLANK> make a <BLANK>.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

To help Superboy make a... statue?

Posted by Xben on :

Not Superboy, and yes it was a statue. But really, the answer should include who or what the statue was of.

So the question is modified to be

The first time we saw Element Lad use his powers after his debut, he was changing lead into gold in order to help <BLANK> make a statue of <BLANK>.

Posted by stuorstew on :

The mention of statues rings a bell so I am fairly sure this is correct:

The first time we saw Element Lad use his powers after his debut, he was changing lead into gold in order to help Lightning Lad make a statue of Proty.

Posted by Xben on :

Yup, that's it. A little memorial statue as thanks for sacrificing himself for bringing him back to life!

Which Legionnaire once performed a scene from 'Leeta 87' the play?

Ultra Boy?

Damn! EDE beat me to it.

Posted by stuorstew on :

Yes he did indeed. Your go Mr Ester.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Crap! I just remembered it was my turn.

New question to follow tomorrow!

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

When five new Legionnaires were held prisoner by Dr. Regulus, what was distinctive about Quislet, and what was the significance of the fact for another storyline?

Posted by Blacula on :

(What issue was that Leeta 87 play in?)

As or this question - hmm I have no idea. Random and wild and uninformed guess - he couldn't go unconscious and this meant he wasn't knocked out by the Emerald Empress later on?

(Now that I think about it, do any characters have that ability? If not, they should invent one who does. I like it.)

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

That he was the only one who wasn't knocked unconscious is the first half, but there's another reason why that fact is significant.

Note that what is important is that it distinguishes him from the other new Legionnaires.

Posted by Blacula on :

I cannot believe I guessed even that much right. It was completely plucked out of thin air.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

This was supposed to be a fairly easy question, but it was really hard to phrase in a way that didn't just give it away.

The answer I'm looking for was that Quislet wasn't knocked unconscious, but _______ was, and thus ________.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Blacula: re: Leeta 87: Annual #1 1990 (TMK)

EDE: The answer I'm looking for was that Quislet wasn't knocked unconscious, but Sensor Girl was, and thus Quiset saw her without her Sensor Girl illusionary appearance?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Hmm... that's still not quite it, though Sensor Girl is correct. There's something that is specifically stated to be revealed about Sensor Girl in that incident.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Okay, nobody seems to be guessing this.

Basically, the incident in question was listed as one of the clues for the "Who is Sensor Girl?" mystery. What I'm looking for is why it was a clue.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Hint:

Who would not have been knocked out by Regulus's gas, and why?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Supergirl?

If so, then you are suggesting that Quislet no being knocked out, but Sensor Girl was, was a sign she wasn't Supergirl (the main red herring of the Who Is Sensor Girl storyline)?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

That's it. According to the list of "Who is Sensor Girl?" clues in one of the lettercols, this scene is supposed to demonstrate that she is not invulnerable, which is supposed to be a clue that she is not Supergirl.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

and this "was supposed to be a fairly easy question"? [Wink]

I'll post a new one by tomorrow.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

It's easy if you know the answer. [Wink]

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

What specifically does preboot Karate Kid have in common with Kid Quantum II, Monstress, and Gates?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Is it that their powers duplicate the powers of another Legionnaire who is not related to them?

Karate Kid I - Karate Kid II
Monstress - anyone else with super-strength
Gates - Veilmist

The only problem is Kid Quantum II, since the only other time manipulator is her brother. Unless we count the preboot Kid Quantum I as being unrelated to her.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

that is not it.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Was it that there were premonitions/predictions of them being killed, only they turned up to survive?

Monstress + Kid Q II - Dreamer had a dream where they'd never see them again, but they survived the rift (although they never did see Monstress again)

Gates - thought dead in the Rift but actually survived

Karate Kid - Dream Girl had a vision where he died, though he actually only collapsed

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Nope. Hint: for the Reboot characters, it was a single, collective experience. The three listed were from memory; the internet tells me three other Legionnaires were also there (two more unique to Reboot plus Ferro).

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I think I've identified the Reboot experience you're talking about. I'm trying to think of what Karate Kid did, though...

Was it that they've met Legionnaires from an alternate timeline who attacked them?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

very, very close. you're 90-95% there, but a little off, and it's hard to drop a hint without giving it away.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

They've... been transported to the headquarters of another version of the Legion, and have encountered and battled members of that other Legion?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

between both guesses I'll say it is close enough, and any hints will just be haggling over details. Val was transported to a place (not HQ) where he met and battled his teammates at a time before they had met him. He knew them but not vice versa. (Karate Kid issue 12).

So he and the Reboot characters met a version of the Silver Age Legion who in turn did not recognize them as Legionnaires.

Go, Ibby!

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Cool, thanks!

Erm...

What word should you not say to Kid Quantum II?

Posted by Shining Son on :

Going with my wild guess approach, Shazam? [Smile]

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

It IS a little known fact that Kid Quantum is powered by:

Sandra Bullock's appeal
Hilary Clinton's power
Amy Winehouse's attitude
Zsa Zsa Gabor's presence
Angelina Jolie's sexiness
Macy Gray's talent

However, Shazam is not the word you need to avoid saying to her, as this word in question provokes an exceedingly violent reaction.

Actually, I really liked the Reboot Kid Q. A lot more fun than the boring Preboot version. Wish he'd hung around longer. Losing a teammate on their first mission was a good story idea though. Really brought home the fact that this was a dangerous business they were getting into.

I miss the Reboot. [Frown]

Yes, her attitude towards the Legion changed when she realized her bro died largely because of his attitude (and it probably helped that Leviathan wasn't with the team anymore...)

I thought it would make a very interesting story idea. Explore the first Kid Q more. But his tenure with the team (which covered exactly two issues INCLUDING the issue in which he got the draft notice) didn't leave much room for that.

Anyway, no and no. After this word was said, Kid Q II explicitly said - "You did it! You said the " " - word!"

Nope, not quit!

Correct! A Sklarian raider called Kid Quantum II a coward, and got two fists in her face for it!

Ultra Boy, because he used his super-speed (to counter the hidden tampering Brainiac 5.1 had done).

Correct, Reboot.

Looks like a descendant of Nightcrawler but he's with the wrong company.

She's the psychologist who counseled Ferro on whether or not to stay permanently in metal state. I think her name was Dr. Rk'yrr.

Posted by Reboot on :

Close enough, I think - her name was spelt Dr Ryk'rr, and she accepted a retainer at the end of the session with Ferro which led to sessions with Jo & Tinya later.

What substance is poisonous even for a Bismollian to eat?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Magnozite?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Along with all organic material from Bismoll.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Magnozite is correct.

I don't recall - was the organic material of Bismoll toxic even after they "evolved" their digestive systems, or did their adaptations allow them to eat the organic stuff too? Was this ever definitively established?

In any case, IB got the one I was thinking of. Man, this board works quickly.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

It's specifically mentioned in the Subs Special from the 80s (by Polar Boy, as I recall). I want to say it's stated elsewhere, but that's the only one that comes to mind without looking it up.

Clue: this wasn't actually on the pizza. Gates said smothering the pizza in it would have made it palatable.

My favourite pizza is Ham & Pineapple. Maybe Gates is similar.

Banyo fruit?

Oh, and my first wild guess would be Karate Kid, but that's because I read "20th century" instead of "30th".

As for a guess, I can't think of when they might have met him during the Team20 story but I know the Legion did meet the 30th century version of the 20th century Superboy villain, Scavenger... so I'll guess him.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Hmm, now that you've quoted me, too late to go back and make grammatical sense out of "make definitively state". Though if anyone's wondering, if was originally "make it clear".

It was indeed, from Impulse #21 (the original, 30th century, meeting was never shown, although it may have been intended as the "Legion encounter CLASSIFIED" in the SF&O #1 timeline).

Back to you iB.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I remember reading that and wondering when it had happened.

Okay, since Blacula hates Team 20 so much, let's go with...

Which of Chameleon's teammates thought he was cute?

Posted by Xben on :

Kinetix?

Posted by Blacula on :

I was actually sort of joking about hating the Team20 era. The LSH stories at the time were definitely some of the worst of the Reboot IMO, but the L* ones were, for the most part, really good. And even the LSH series had a couple of gems - specifically the opening issue (#85) and the 1950s story.

---

As for this question, I'll say the obvious answer...

Invisible Kid!

[Wink] Just kidding. I'll say...

Spark.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Lyle would have been awesome.

I'm sure Spark did find it cute, but I'm looking for someone who specifically stated it outright...

and Xben has it, it was Kinetix in LSH 66, her tryout issue!

Back to Xben.

PS, I agree with you that the Team30 team had a lot of good stories (Mordru arc!!) and I appreciated the greater focus on some Team20 Legionnaires (e.g. Spark, Gates, Brainy, Shvaughn)

Posted by Shining Son on :

Can anyone point me to a source that explains why these eras were called Team 20 and Team 30?

BTW, it occurs to me that Chameleon doesn't have any excuse for NOT being cute.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Because roughly half the team was stranded in the 20th century; teir adventures appeard in the LSH series, Final Night, occasinally in Showcase, plus various x-overs in other DCU books.

Team 30 denotes the team members still in the 30th century, who were appearing in the Legionnaires series. While of course that was the normal era for the Legion (prior to the years 2000 and 3000, of course), the Team 30 term exists to differentiate those team members from those stuck in the past.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Because part of the team (Team20) was in the 20th century, and the rest (Team30) were on the 30th century.

Posted by Xben on :

I haven't read them for a while, but overall my memory is that Team 20 / Team 30 was a more enjoyable run that what came afterwards, with the impact of the Space Anomaly, prior to DNA.

OK, it's obscure Silver-Age character time. Here are five scientists who showed up in the early Adventures-era of the LSH. What was each one doing in their one and only (as far as I know) Legion appearance?

Ak Aru
Dr. James Bannon
Lon Duryal
Professor Harding
Doctor Karnes

If this proves too difficult, I'll give some big clues before too long

It's better than what came after, but also a huge step down from the stories before the split. IMO, the first year of the reboot was absolutely brilliant, then there was a bit of a dropoff after that first year (which I attribute to Waid leaving), then a pretty big decline after the T20/T30 split (though a few really solid issues, especially the alt-reality stories), and then another big dropoff in quality after the T20/T30 reunion.

Anyway, Lon Duryal made lifelike androids.

I suspect one of them (Ak Aru?) developed the cure for the Tree-Men of Arbro blight.

Posted by Xben on :

EDE has one of them right.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I think one of them may have invented the plastic fluid that gave Bouncing Boy his powers.

Posted by Shining Son on :

I have no guesses for the current question but thanks to everyone for answering about Team 20/30.

Posted by Xben on :

None of them had anything to do with Bouncing Boy's powers.

So, Lon Duryal was the head scientist at an android factory. Here are the answers for the other four - the question is to now match the scientist to their answer:

1. A guest entomologist visiting Legion headquarters (who brought some glowing bugs that gave Sun Boy his powers back temporarily)
2. A scientist on the doll world planet that Mask Man tied up and impersonated
3. An archeologist who visited Throon (the planet with the two grumpy old men who nearly defeated the entire Legion)
4. A man who had intended to collect statues from every world. Proty II stowed away with him to some world as part of his initiation into the Legion of Super-Pets

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

1. Professor Harding
2. Ak Aru
3. Doctor Karnes
4. Dr. James Bannon

Posted by Xben on :

two right, which mans that the other two just need to be reversed

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

1. Professor Harding
2. Ak Aru
3. Dr. James Bannon
4. Doctor Karnes

Posted by Xben on :

That's it. You're go, EDE.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I was pretty sure about the first two once you posted the clues, so it was just a matter of guessing on the others!

Next question:

Who were the Black Borlats?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

A... batball team?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not a batball team, though (I believe) they were first referenced in the Glorithverse era.

Hint: there was an equivalent group postboot, though with a different name.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

A Magnoball team?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

They're a gang on Rimbor, IIRC.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

CMK has it. Specifically, they're the gang both Jo and An Ryd belonged to.

I've been wondering if that implies that the Borlat, first seen in Adventure #309, is a Rimborian animal.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

I don't think so, I think it just implies that it's well-known in all civilized worlds as a very fierce, strong animal.

Sort of how the "Detroit Tigers" does not imply that tigers were ever native to Detroit.

But on the subject of animals and their native planets, what planet is a babootch from?

Posted by Xben on :

Krypton! At least the three eyed variety, I think it was.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Indeed, Xben. Your turn.

Posted by Xben on :

I remember that's what Superboy said he'd be out of his astonishment at Dev-Em's refusal to join the Legion.

New question soon.

Posted by Xben on :

Normally, of course, the Legion has been shown to be based on earth. However, in one pre-Adventures-era story, they were apparently headquartered on another familiar Legion world. What world was this?

Posted by Shining Son on :

I don't know but I'm dying to find out!

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Xanthu?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Saturn/Titan?

Posted by Xben on :

Xanthu is the correct answer, from the story where the evil duplicate of Sun Boy shows up asking Superboy to rebuild the giant robot the Legion hid in the past. At the end, the brief scene in the 30th century is stated to be on Xanthu. To be fair, though the Legion is still sitting around with namecards in front of them, it looks quite different than their HQ normally does, so maybe for some reason they were just hanging out on Xanthu that day for some reason.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

New Q soon.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

What specific and deliberate editorial change can one find in later 1960s reprints of "Superman's Super-Courtship" (Action #289) that were not in the June 1962 original, and why?

Posted by Reboot on :

It's got to be something to do with the "why Superman doesn't bonk Supergirl" bit... Did they delete the "I'd do someone like you" part?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

ha! right story... but no. The correct answer is Legion-specific rather than El-specific.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Did this story feature the Adult Legion? If it's the one where some of the Legionnaires were married to other Legionnaires, I'll guess that Imra was not married to Garth.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

good guess, and in the right ballpark... but no. This story as it originally appeared was the first to show a version of Imra and Garth who were married.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Then was it Phantom Woman who was married to someone other than Colossal Man?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

very, very close. Involves one of those two.

Posted by Shining Son on :

I mean Ultra Man.

Posted by Shining Son on :

So to be less ambiguous: Tinya is NOT married to Jo Nah, as would later be the official mythos.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Harrumph, okay, Jo never did marry Tinya, did he? Oh well, you know what I mean.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

right on the first one. The story, published with a June 1962 cover date, even predates Jo's first appearance (the following month), let alone them being a couple. Later reprints of the story would reference Tinya being married to Jo (within standard Silver Age Adult Legion lore).

Go, Shiny!

Posted by Shining Son on :

Damn, keep forgetting not to try so hard when I don't have a question ready.

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

Ha! I just looked up two reprints of the story and found the same thing, although the change strikes me as totally unnecessary. Kara's line--"After all, she's probably still single"--reflects only her limited knowledge at the time, not whether Phantom Woman was actually married.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Okay, speaking of Imra being married, back in the original Legion timeline (we call that preboot, yes?) Garth and Imra were abducted immediately upon departing for their honeymoon. They were taken to a colony on what body in the Sol system?

Posted by Reboot on :

Actually, I found some scans of the story in Action #289 and Adventure #390 (the latter as "When Supergirl Played Cupid"), and even at a casual glance there's more changes in the Adult Legion section there than just a footnote.

 -
 -

(Also note "Phantom Woman" loses the blue/white "phantom" effect. It's more obvious in other panels, but I was going quite far enough already!)

And that footnote...
 -

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

Some of the changes are understandable--explaining that the clubhouse is a replica of the original for example--but at least one strikes me as odd: Cosmic Man has been replaced by Brainiac 5 in the "make new flight rings panel"!

Just so SS's new question doesn't get lost:

I'd say that could just be that there wasn't enough detail for the colorist to know who it was supposed to be, and just picked a character because it didn't matter.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Ok, was it Luna (Earth's moon)?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Ceres?

Posted by Shining Son on :

Kent got it.

In 1985 the Chinese Empire colonized Earth's moon with spacecraft taken from America. At least they did in the alternate timeline of this story, which Superboy and his Legion task force have to take a time bubble and try to fix, while another team go into space to rescue Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Actually, that would be "her" role.

Posted by Blacula on :

^ Haha. Goes to show how lucky the guess was. I'm picturing Mnemonic Kid as being a green guy with a helmet and a sort of circular emblem or something on his chest? That must have been someone else. I'll find out who all these characters are when I do my big Legion re-read one day.

The Dominators (through their gene bomb) killed Scott Fischer.

Posted by Blacula on :

^ Hmmm that wasn't actually who I was thinking of but I can't deny that the Dominators fit the question as neatly as my answer does, so I'll give the next one to you CMK.

The race I really had in mind were the Gil'Dishpan, who were indirectly responsible for Celsius' death when she was caught in the blast of their attempting-to-escape ship. (Also in Invasion!)

The moral of this story - Doom Patrol members should stay far away from the 31st century!

Doom Patrol members should stay far away from any century. They don't have good luck anywhere/when.

What Legion enemy had previously been a slave?

Posted by Blacula on :

Wasn't Grimbor a love-slave of Charma's?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

I suppose you could say that. But when I say slave, I mean it in the true sense of slavery - a sentient being (not a robot) who legally has no personhood but instead is the absolute property of another.

Was that in the pre-Flashpoint Legion Annual # 1? I'd totally forgotten about that. Was she a slave? If so, I guess I have to give it to you, though that's not who I was thinking of.

I don't believe that Egyptian soldiers were generally slaves.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Egyptian slavery was quite complecated, and intertwined, more akin to what we would consider basic debt/obligation than stereotypical slavery. Egyptian slavery was generally temporary, cut a ross class and professional lines, and one could even be a slave while having slaves of ones own.

That said, my guess was a shot in the dark, and no worries if it is not what you had in mind.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Well, I'll throw out a hint - the slave in question was actually serving and being abused by his/her/its owner at the time that he/she/it became empowered as the villain.

This seems like something familiar, but I can't remember exactly which character it is.

Sarya, perhaps?

I don't have the issue in front of me, but, was that Empress a genuine slave? I don't recall the issue well enough to be certain, and I'm not in a place where I have my comic collection handy.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I don't remember for certain either, but I don't remember her being an actual slave. A serf, perhaps, keeping with the medieval theme of Orando, but not a slave in sense intended.

Posted by Blacula on :

^ I'm sure that linguistic distinction was of some comfort to her while she was chained to a wall, scrubbing floors for the aristocracy. Haha [Big Grin]

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

But at least she had the comfort of knowing that she and all her descendents would forever be scrubbing these same floors, and could never be sold to another aristocrat and have to scrub different floors! [Wink]

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

OK, I just re-read the issue, and I do not see any indication that she was a slave. She was certainly a subject of a duke, and that duke was attempting to force her into marriage (or at least bed) with him when she ran away and found the Emerald Eye, but the precise nature of her relationship with the duke is not specified enough to say that she was a slave.

Next question to Invisible Brainiac.

Posted by Blacula on :

This seems like the type of thing that might have occurred in the background of a panel during the PMS era, so I will guess... Sensor and Chameleon?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

You have one Legionnaire right.

Funnily enough, the only games I remember from PMS were video games (is that the era after Waid left, starting roughly around the Emerald Violet storyline up to just before DNA arrived?)

Posted by Blacula on :

Yes - PMS is the Peyer, McCraw, Stern era after Waid left (Emerald Vi to DnA). An extreme low point in the Reboot's history IMO - although the descent was gradual and in fact some of the early Legionnaires stories during this period were still very good.

Until the teams reunited in LoSH #100 it wasn't so much the writing that annoyed me during this period as it was the plot decisions - Lori, Lori, Lori, too many new members and, of course, killing off Gim - but after LoSH #100 even the writing turned to crap IMO.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I heartily agree with you. The writing was still decent towards the start (Gates, Spark, Brainiac 5, Ultra Boy, Kinetix, XS, M'Onel, Chameleon, Star Boy, Shvaughn Erin among others were very well-written IMO) and the buildup to, and conclusion of, the Mordru/Eye arc remains one of my faves.

Besides Lori and the loss of Gim, I'm also perplexed at the inclusion of Monstress and the snake-ifying of Sensor. I love Monstress, but only because of DNA's take on her (and frankly, sevaral others like Kid Q, Mysa or even Particon performed better vs. Mordru).

Post-100, well... The Pernisius storyline was jsut *meh*, the 40th anniversary two-parter didn't do much for me, the Elements of Disaster was okay, and the Dark Circle was pretty awful. Zombifying Kinetix AGAIN and "mutating" Andromeda yet not having her rejoin was baffling. The only things I liked were Brainy's forcefield becoming internal (something DNA would later use to great effect), the two-parter vs. the Fatal Five in LSH120-121, and the founders in Legionnaires 75. The Summer World issue in Legionnaires 77 was decent, too.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Where can I read up on Brainiac 5's internal forcefield and Andromeda's mutation?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

SS, Andromeda was "changed" by a space anomaly. She first enetered it in LSH v4 100; you get additional glimpses in Legionnaires 58-60; she exits it in LSH v4 104; and demonstrates her new powers in various issues of the Dark Circle story arc that takes place in Legionnaires 62-65 and LSH v4 106-108.

Brainiac 5 was also changed by the same space anomaly. His forcefield becomes an innate power, and under DNA he would become able to use it to form simple shapes. I would recommend checking out Legion Lost and the Legion series after that for some very cool uses of said forcefield; particularly the Legion 1 wherein he creates multiple smaller fields to reflect multiple attackers' shots back at them.

Posted by Shining Son on :

I assume you mean the original Legion Lost, not at all related to the current series?

Posted by Blacula on :

^ Yes he does.

P.S. Andromeda's mutation is not at all as interesting as it sounds. All it mainly did was make her lose a few feet of height and start wearing cargo pants.

A total "What was the point?" plot move from the dark time of the Reboot.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Thanks IB and Blacula. I would ask more but I suppose it's best to return you to your regularly scheduled trivia question...

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Re Andromeda's "mutation", the only thing of any interest whatsoever were the light powers she exhibited in one panel in Legionnaires 64. It wasn't explored any further.

Other anomaly changes include -

Gates and Brainiac 5 becoming friends (some people say Gates' personality changed, but I argue that it didn't. It was BRAINY who changed).

Brainiac 5 became much nicer and more emotionally competent.

Kinetix withdrew into her mind and became very subdued (thankfully, this was reversed in LSH 113 by explaining she was merely in awe of the Anomaly)

M'Onel and Umbra developed a closer friendship. M'Onel also collapsed after exiting the Anomaly, but this wasn't followed up on and it didn't seem as though his powers were affected at all.

- Both instances I'm thinking of occured during the DNA run
- Of the two instances I mentioned, there was one Legionnaire who was shown playing in both Instance 1 and Instance 2

Chameleon and Invisible Kid?

One right.

Umbra/Ferro are one pair, from the Secret Files issue.

I'd assume then the other is Chameleon/Umbra from a Legion Lost issue?

Correct, Future! Back to you.

Ultra Boy?

Neither Ultra Boy or Polar Boy volunteered.

Element Lad?

White Witch?

Posted by Future on :

Eryk has it! Element Lad volunteered to give his life. Sensor Girl objected and Magnetic Kid snuck off to do the deed during the discussion.

Posted by Xben on :

Then Polar Boy flew off and tried to stop him? I have some memory of that. Oh well.

Posted by Future on :

Indeed! Polar Boy didn't volunteer but he did fly after Pol to stop him.

That's all 7.

You're up, Xben.

Posted by Xben on :

What is true of Wildfire, Mon-El, and Element Lad that isn't true of any other pre-crisis Legionnaire? (of course, there may be more than one thing, but there's something specific I have in my mind)

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Neither of their parents ever appeared in an issue of the Legion?

Posted by Xben on :

I've no idea if that's true, but it's not what I had in mind.

A small hint is that it is something that did happen with all three characters, rather than something that did not.

Posted by Blacula on :

I feel like it's something to do with their leaderships but can't think of what.

All three... were both deputy leader and leader of the team?

(I have no idea if that's true - just guessing.)

Posted by Xben on :

No. I don't think Wildfire was every deputy, not sure about Mon-El. But the answer has nothing to do with their leadership.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

They... all defeated a Servant of Darkness? (Hmm... I know both Wildfire and Element Lad did but I think Mon-El didn't. and Star Boy (and Yera, who wasn't a pre-Crisis Legionnaire) also took one out each...) But does it have something to do with their powers or use of same?

Posted by Xben on :

That's not it. And it's nothing that has specifically to do with their powers, or their use.

Another hint: each "event" took place in a single issue, a different one for each character, published over quite a few years.

Posted by Xben on :

Just to add to the above hint, I think these "events" would be pretty familiar to most Legion fans who know the pre-crisis era. They're not particularly obscure or anything.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Blanking on this right now. I'll hazard a guess and say it was somebody they fought?

Posted by Xben on :

No, nothing to do with anyone they fought. For both Element Lad and Mon-El, this took place early in the Adventures Era, and for Wildfire it took place early in the 1970's.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Does it have to do with the fact that they changed codenames after joining? Not sure why Light Lass wouldn't qualify then, but something like that seem plausible...

Posted by Xben on :

You're on the right track. But it's a little more specific than that. There's a detail that makes Mon-El eligible (who didn't change his name after joining) but makes Lightning Lass, Lightning Boy, or Triplicate Girl (who all apparently did change their names after joining) ineligible.

I'll give it a short time longer to see if anyone gets it precisely.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

They didn't reveal the precise nature of their powers when they tried out?

Posted by Xben on :

Hmm. That is true, though it's not what I had in mind. I suppose you could argue that it's also true of Sensor Girl. But you've hit upon the other element of the answer - it has to do with their tryouts.

So it's just a matter of putting together part of EDE's answer with part of CMK's answer...

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

They tried out with a different name than they used for most of their Legion career?

Posted by Xben on :

That's it. With Mon-El, this was after he was already a member, and with Wildfire he'd gone to his familiar name by the time he actually joined, but all three did their try-out with a name (ERG-1, Marvel Lad, Mystery Lad) that they basically never used again.

What Legionnaire was also known as "Frisky"?

Posted by Xben on :

Catspaw?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Good guess, but no.

Posted by Xben on :

Hm, what about Furball (Timber Wolf) then?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Ultra Boy?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

It is Furball. "Frisky" was the name given him by Aria Campbell when they first met.

Posted by Xben on :

OK, probably a pretty easy one...which three Legion girls pretended to fall for and compete over Jimmy Olsen in order to help him win points with Lucy Lane?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Ayla, Luornu, Imra.

Posted by Xben on :

Yup

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Cool, thanks.

Which Legionnaire was once likened to a bubble?

Posted by Blacula on :

I'll get the too obvious one out of the way - Bouncing Boy.

Posted by Xben on :

Or Quislet?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Nope, neither of those.

Posted by Xben on :

Er, then Dreamer perhaps?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, not Dreamer either.

Posted by Reboot on :

Brainiac 5?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, not Brainiac 5 either.

Clue - this Legionnaire was also called a bubblehead.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Is it Tellus?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, not Tellus either.

Posted by Reboot on :

Cosmic Boy?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Nope!

It's not...

Bouncing Boy
Quislet
Dreamer
Brainiac 5
Tellus
Cosmic Boy

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Element Lad?

Posted by Xben on :

Colossal Boy / Leviathan?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, neither of those two either.

Hint: it's a female Legionnaire

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Comet Queen?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, not Comet Queen either (though I wouldn't have been surprised if she had been, I recall Shadow Lass calling her "the most shallow applicant ever")

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Is it Kinetix?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, not Kinetix either.

So we're looking for a female Legionnaire who's been likened to a bubble and a bubblehead.

It's not...

Bouncing Boy
Quislet
Dreamer
Brainiac 5
Tellus
Cosmic Boy
Element Lad
Colossal Boy/Leviathan
Comet Queen
Kinetix

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Monstress?

Posted by Xben on :

Kid Quantum II

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Quis has it! In fact, it was Kid Quantum II who called Monstress a bubblehead in Legionnaires 49 for primping so much, to which Monstress replied, "Better a bubble than a rock. It is possible to be both powerful and ladylike."

Over to Quis!

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Thinking of a question is hard. So I am going with an easy question.

Who cornered Night Girl in the abandoned monorail station?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Crafty Colson and his gang?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

You are correct sir!

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Which Legionnaire shares a name with a villain from the 60s Aquaman cartoon?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Monstress?

Posted by Future on :

Wildfire?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Both good guesses, but neither right!

Posted by Xben on :

Andromeda?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not Andromeda!

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

I know in the threeboot Chameleon Boy was known just as Chameleon and Chameleon is the name of a Marvel villain...so

Chameleon?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not Chameleon.

Posted by Xben on :

How about Live Wire - that was the name of a more recent Superman cartoon villain.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not Live Wire.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Leviathan?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

You DO mean code name, right Eryk?

Hmmm...

Quislet?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Neither Leviathan nor Quislet.

While it is the Legionnaire's code name, it is apparently the real name of the Aquaman villain.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Brainiac 5?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Nope!

Posted by Jerry on :

Sun Boy

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Gates

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Timber Wolf?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

None of the above.

Hint: The villain is from the planet Imago.

Posted by Xben on :

Princess Projectra? I don't really think that could be it, but maybe it fits the Planet Imago clue. It'd be a riot if it were correct.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I figured someone would guess Projectra after that clue, but no.

Posted by Future on :

Tellus?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Magno?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Neither Tellus nor Magno.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Dawnstar?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Nope.

It is a male character.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Blok?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Nope.

This code name has been used by multiple Legion characters.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Kid Quantum?

Posted by Jerry on :

Kid Quantum?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not Kid Quantum.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Superboy?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Nope.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Reflecto?

Posted by Xben on :

Impulse?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

IB has it. In The Mirror-Man from Planet Imago, Reflecto helps out the Brain by sending him a duplicate of Aquaman!

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I always did love how those old cartoons featured so many sea creatures.

Next Q: Sensor once used her powers to make it seem that 6 pairs of Legionnaires had different powers.

Can you name these six pairs?

*Note - the actual page shows only 11 Legionnaires, and one of the 11 isn't actually using any powers. That makes only 10 Legionnaires who were using their powers, but there were two of them who were using the 2 "absent" Legionnaires' powers.

Posted by Future on :

I know this is from LSH v4 #100. Let's see how my memory does.

Live Wire - Umbra
Chameleon - Monstress
Invisible Kid - XS
Kinetix - Violet
Element Lad - Star Boy
Cosmic Boy - Sensor

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Perfect, Future! That was fast, and now you're up!

Posted by Future on :

Good timing and likely reading the issue too much nearly 15 years ago ... 15 years. Weird.

Which Legionnaire was once so injured, Brainiac 5 had to regrow their teeth?

Posted by Xben on :

Was that Triad, when she was beaten by the White Triangle people?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

15 years... can't believe it's so long.

Was that Threeboot Phantom Girl, after Projectra had beaten her up?

Posted by Future on :

Ibby has the instance I was thinking of. Triad may have needed the help after her run in with the White Triangle, but Projectra of all people took down Phantom Girl so fiercely her teeth had to be regrown. Good old Threeboot.

Back to you, IB!

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Which 5 female Legionnaires were once depicted at a slumber party,

and which 3 male Legionnaires peeped in on them?

Posted by Xben on :

Um, okay, how about
XS, Apparition, Triad, Kinetix, & Spark?

And for the boys...Ultra Boy, Chameleon, and Invisible Kid?

Doesn't seem right, but just to get things going.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Although all of those girls probably were at the party, not all of them were depicted there.

And I wouldn't put it past any of those guys to peep in (well, maybe not the supposedly-gay Lyle), but not all of them were depicted in the act.

Posted by Future on :

Saturn Girl, Apparition, Triad, Kinetix, and Violet

Cosmic Boy, Live Wire, and Ultra Boy.

Same issue, but a pin-up, yeah? [Wink]

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I expected either you or Reboot would get it [Wink]

Back to you, Future.

Posted by Future on :

Which two Legionnaires have had the gall/misfortune of interpreting the Legion Constitution in front of Saturn Girl and having her call them out on it?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Invisible Kid (Lyle) and Polar Boy?

Posted by Future on :

And right back to Invisible Brainiac!

Posted by Xben on :

When did that happen?

Posted by Future on :

The Legion #5 and LSH v3 #51. Two different instances.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Were the guys both Leader at the time of their constitutional misinterpretation?

Posted by Xben on :

Invisible Kid wouldn't have been.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Just seemed like Leaders are more apt to quote the Legion Constitution. [Smile]

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Lyle wasn't, but he was calling Imra out on her reluctance to protect refugee Progeny.

Polar Boy was; this was during the trial of Brainiac 5 for the "murder" of Jaxon Rugarth/Infinite Man.

That whole trial arc was dramatic, but frankly it made me lose a lot of respect for several Legionnaires -

Brainy and Imra seemed to be willing to twist the Constitution to their purposes. Don't get me wrong, I do agree with them that Rugarth was brain-dead, but I also remember how Brainy and Imra were among the ones who ragged on Star Boy for his accidental killing of Kenz Nuhor - whereas these two used Rugarth with knowledge that his body would likely die. Seemed like a lot of hypocrisy to me.

Phantom Girl was one of the Legionnaires who admitted to voting against Brainy because she was a friend of Luornu's - not because of her convictions. Violet thought much the same, telling Jacques that he could vote for Brainy in gratitude of receiving his powers.

And Polar Boy lost some respect from me because he could have stopped this thing before Brainy put the plan in motion - why put him on trial after? I don't recall him doing anything - unlike the White Witch, who resigned in protest.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

*ahem* sorry for going off on a tangent.

Okay, my question...

Two Postboot Legionnaires were foreshadowed as having grim fates should the Postboot timeline have continued. Can you name these two, and cite the instances which led us to believe they might someday die in action?

Posted by Reboot on :

Dreamer had a vision of Star Boy's grave - although this would probably have been him blown back in time to become "Danny Blaine" rather than an actual death.

And there was also the future glimpse of Sister Andromeda, who was shocked to see Kinetix alive.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Correct and correct, Reboot.

Another correct answer would have been LSH Annual 7, the Dead Earth annual where Wildfire's recollections included a memorial statue of Gates.

In any case, you're up!

Cool... I have a related question - just trying to track down a panel reference to make sure I've got my facts right. Question soon.

Posted by Exnihil on :

OK...

Inside of the Interplanetary Post Office we are shown several mail slots which seem to labeled as delivery receptacles for mail bound for Solar System planets. One of the destination slots is obscured, however, and we can only see the letters, "HE..."

Assuming that what we are seeing is, indeed, strictly related to Solar System planetary mail, what is the likeliest word that is being covered up?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Is "HE" definitely the beginning of the word? Maybe it's part of the words "THE MOON."

Alternatively, maybe it's part of the word "OTHER", indicating non-Solar System destinations.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

The asteroid Hestia, perhaps?

Posted by Exnihil on :

"HE" is definitely the beginning of the word, and - like I say - this question is predicated on the assumption of strictly Solar System destinations. (For all I know it may have been intended to be a non-Solar System destination but, as all others are, I'm sticking with my assumption).

And, to Eric's guess, remember... this is an Interplanetary Post Office... no asteroids allowed.

It might help to think outside of the box... not all planets in our Solar System have always had the names they have today - or, at least, not everyone felt they should.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Oh, was one of the planets named for William Herschel for awhile?

Presumably Uranus, since that's the one he discovered.

Posted by Exnihil on :

Bingo!

Uranus was "discovered" by William Herschel, who proposed that it be named "Georgium Sidus" or "George's Star" in honor of George III.

The French, for obvious reasons, took issue with this and - for quite a while - called the planet, "Herschel". It was finally mostly standardized as "Uranus" in 1850, although references to the planet as "Herschel" persisted for a good while afterwords (I've actually seen references as late as the 1970's).

Even the symbol for Uranus still refects this name:

 - .

Good job, fellow space nerd! [Smile]

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Okay, then.

Here's another question, related to my last one.

Not only did the planet Skor give birth to a process for resurrecting the dead (albeit one that was useless for Lightning Lad), it also gave birth to two Legion foes.

Name the two Skorian Legion villains.

There are three correct Legionnaires in the above two guesses.

Also note that when I meant face in battle, I mean there was a direct physical confrontation during the encounter. I'm also assuming that all the "male" Composite Durlans the Legion encountered were the same individual.

Invisible Kid, Spark, Braniac 5, Ultra Boy

Spark, Violet, Brainiac 5, and Kinetix

Future has it!

The Legion fought the Composite Durlan thrice -

Legionnaires 25/LSH 69 - Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, Apparition, Chameleon, Invisible Kid, Leviathan, Brainiac 5, Spark, Kinetix, Shrinking Violet, Andromeda (Durlan was pretty dumb to not keep phased all throughout!)

Legionnaires 55 - Live Wire, Kinetix, Violet, Star Boy, Element Lad, Monstress

LSH 107 - Triad, Spark, Brainiac 5, Violet, Kid Quantum II

So that's thrice for Violet, and twice each for Kinetix, Spark and Brainiac 5!

[Shrinking Violet - Post-Boot] [Kinetix] [Spark] [Brainiac 5 - Post-Boot]

It is indeed Kono, but I think the latter two comments are thinking of a much later time.

Mysa Nal did indeed give Kono her powers prior to either of them becoming Legionnaires.

According to the loose-leaf Who's Who - during that time when Mysa was transformed by Mordru into Xola Aq, the Hag - she was aided by the Sklarian pirate Bel An'nan. To reward her, Mysa/Xola cast a spell to grant Bel's unborn daughter great powers... the mass shifting abilities that Brita (Kono) developed.

So Eryk gets it!

I'm not "an" Xben - I'm the XBen, the costumed crime fighter who has the mutant power of making a grain of sand appear in my enemy's eye. Or at least that's what we used to joke about in college.

(Actually, I've written most of an extensive comic series about this character and others based on my college friends, spending a lot of energy trying to figure out how that power could be used to overcome overwhelming threats. A lot of my love for the Legion comes from a similar interest. Unfortunately, my artist friend hasn't drawn any of it yet).

OK, in the massive LSH poster that Keith Giffen drew back in the 1980's featuring just about everyone from the Legion up to that point, who is Brainiac 5 looking at?

Actually, I'll accept either of two answers, since I'm not 100% sure which of two characters it is (I'm looking at it on a low-res scan).

I'd say he's looking deep into Element Lad's eyes, but I suppose your "other" possibility is Streaky.

Well you probably don't mean Time Trapper's elbow, so the closest character would be Streaky. Only including the living characters seems like a pretty stupid and arbitrary decsion (in my completely unbiased opinion of course) when you only have to include those 4 or so dead characters in order to get a poster that accurately represents the entirety of the Reboot Legion.

And Jiminez couldn't even get that right anyway could he? I seem to remember thinking a long time ago that there were a couple of dead characters that managed to sneak onto the poster. Villains I think. Roxxas maybe? Can't remember what his status was at this point. And the Sun-Eater?

P.S. Who is the wolf-man next to Caress in between Rokk's legs? And the unshaven guy on the right in between Garth and Rond? I assume they're from the Planet Hell storyline but don't remember anything about them.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Roxxas was believed dead, but, given that Andromeda survived, it seems likely that he did as well. Still, you've got a point.

Wolf man is Bandarkat, I believe. I'm guessing unshaven guy is the Planet Hell warden?

I remember that now, but it was just a guess at the time.

Back in Best of DC Blue Ribbon Digest #24 (dated May 1982) there was a feature that listed all the Legionnaires and gave a bit of write-up on each one. (This was the digest that featured the sequel to the Adventures-era "Colossal Failure" story).

Which two characters were described as embodying "patience" and "impatience"?

One person has guessed one correct character (in the correct position).

I think those Blue Ribbon digests were mostly reprints, but this one had a wrap-around story that used the "Colossal Failure" as an extended flashback in the middle of it. The original story was written by Paul Levitz and drawn by Carmine Infantino, of all people.

IIRC, the beginning of the story had Marte Allon awarding the active Earth-born Legionnaires (Gim, Dirk, Val and Wildfire). Then she gets turned to glass; Gim has the flashback to the original Adventure story; and they stop the bad guy at the end. It was quite a good story, but you didn't miss all that much since the original Adventure story took up the bulk of it.

I don't have the issue to hand but (I think) I remember a scene early in the Reboot where Tinya (I think) and... Luornu (I think) were enjoying some blue banyo fruit (I think) ice cream in the Legion commissary and complimenting Tenzil on making it.

Obviously my memory of this scene is not too strong so just ignore me if it doesn't ring a bell with anyone else.

Yep - one of them's the scene. Bgztlian Blue ice cream was the flavour I was thinking of - not banyo fruit.

Reboot named so many more food items than I thought! The two items I had in mind weren't actually shown, only mentioned - but since Reboot named so many I'll give the Q to him!

For the record, my 2 items were:

- Randonian pudding, mentioned as Chuck's prize for beatng Tenzil in pool (pudding any time he wants it for a month, and it takes hours to prepare)

- Black Hole Layer Cake, which Kinetix invited XS to have a bit off in Legionnaires 42

There was also a scene in Legionnaires 53 where Monstress and Sensor split a roast, but I don't recall what type of meat it was.

Over to you Reboot!

"Pig" [Smile]

On the The Legion #12 cover, Shikari faces off against Batman, as she does in the comic - however, on the originally-solicited version of the cover, it was a different Legionnaire entirely who faced off against Mr. Wayne's hologram. Who was it?

Nope. [Come on, he's ON both the original and final covers!]

This may help - it's the revised solicit image. Everything except Shikari (and the random deletion of a background effect) is the same as in the original solicit bar the addition of colour:

The latter. I want it to be something like a long 21CL post, not something in an inane or trivia thread. I decided to switch here when I realised it may take a few posts to get to the answer [Smile]

Okay, another clue - the Legionnaire in question is NOT part of the team who fight the "JLA" in the issue - which presumably has something to do with the cover switcharoo.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Gear IS the only other Legionnaire not guessed from the team that actually fought the JLA (Violet and Ultra Boy were the other 2), and I didn't think it would be him. Hmmm...

Star Boy?

Are you planning your 10K post to be within the year? Can't wait to see where you're taking your "main" quartet in 21C [Smile]

Brainiac 5?

Posted by SoM on :

Nope.

Okay, there seems to be a lot of throwing out random names going on making this harder than I expected. Think about it. M'Onel is paired with Superman, XS with Flash and there's a shapeshifter's duel between J'Onn and Cham. Given that, who - amongst those actually on the team at that point* - would you pair up against Batman?

(*Note that neither Umbra nor Karate Kid, both guesses otherwise on the right lines, were actually members as of The Legion #12 - the depowered Umbra departed in #10 and wouldn't reappear until #24, while Karate Kid was still stuck on Steeple with Ferro until #22).

I definitely want it to be before the year's out, yeah. If by the quartet you mean Cos/Trinity and Spark/don't-call-him-Brainy, I have to get out of the EW aftermath first, which is stymieing me - I've got quite a bit to sort out at the Academy. (And I also want to get back to Laurel & Lydia as well at some point!)

LOL. I was going with Legionnaires who I knew to be at the battle. Don't know why I blanked on Lyle though, probably because I knew he was elsewhere at the time.

I haven't had much time to think of my own plans either - actually I don't really have any. Lately I've been filled with ideas for Postboot Legion stories and LMB-verse ones... Yup, that's the quartet I was mentioning, since I know you have big plans for them and I think you haven't fleshed them out as much as your plans for Dani and the Academy?

Oh, I've got plenty of plans - after the current arc there is done (albeit that's a bit away), I'll be leaving the Academy for a wee bit since I've had my plan for what's going to happen with Cos/Trinity for quite literally years now and I want to get it moving! And there's some stuff in Cathingham (Laurel/Lydia) that I want to get done too. In that context, my fairly-recently-devised plans for Spark & Q will probably wait, since there is more planning to go there.

It's just finding the time and capacity to actually write the damn stuff down that's my problem. Too long sitting at a white screen....

[Anyway, we should probably take this to PM. EDE will no doubt think of a question at SOME point [Wink] ]

Which two characters graduated the Legion Academy alongside Comet Queen the first time, and where was each of the three (including CQ) placed immediately after graduation?

Posted by Power Boy on :

Night Kid and Crystal Kid.

Night Kid went back to Talok VIII.

Crystal Kid went to work in a jewelry store.

Comet Queen went to work at the academy.

Posted by Future on :

Shadow Kid - back to Talok VIII

Mandalla - back to Takron Galtos

Comet Queen - back to the Subs

These Legion Academy graduations sure are missing some memos...

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I'll go ahead and give to you, Future, even though it's not specified that Mandalla is being stationed on Takron-Galtos (she does join the Science Police, however). I'm assuming she must have been a super-good student to graduate with Grev and Grava.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I'm actually still a bit surprised that Comet Queen and Mandalla apparently graduated before Nightwind, Power Boy and the others. If I remember right, Nightwind, Power Boy, Lamprey and Crystal Kid were *supposed* to have been enrolled in the Academy earlier. Mandalla and Comet Queen both must have been VERY competent!

Although, Magnetic Kid (in pre-Crisis continuity anyway) also joined up after they all did yet he made it to the Legion first...

Posted by Future on :

Ah, true. I'm mixing my memory of the next graduation, where I think all but Lamprey get sent to Takron Galtos.

I'd assume Mandalla was an exemplary student as well, going from being a late addition with the Westerner to graduating with the remainder of the initial 70s class. Poor Power Boy ... perhaps Legion rejection caused him to slip in his studies for a spell.

Next question ... who is a member of the Society of Historical Speculation?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

^^See also Tellus, whose Academy tenure was comparable to Magnetic Kid.

You know, I never really realized that the audition trifecta of Crystal Kid, Lamprey, and Nightwind DIDN'T show up for the one Legion audition that actually netted multiple memberships. I'd love to believe there's an in-story reason ... some expectation of rejection (again) that causes them to kick themselves once the other students make it so far.

I just found this out this afternoon! [Wink]

I'll let somebody else get it if they can, however.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I don't think these three were mentioned (or appeared at all!) in that story. If I remember right, by that point Paul had begun ignoring Nightwind, Crystal Kid and Lamprey in favor of Power Boy, Laurel Kent, Tellus, Magnetic Kid, Comet Queen and Shadow Kid.

Re Historical Speculation...

Cosmic Boy?

Haha. I had a hunch that Eryk would know this answer. It's coincidental timing. I've had this question in my back pocket for a few months.

I always assumed they were already rejected by the time the story opened.

Lamprey and Crystal Kid probably didn't stand much of a chance with Lightning Lass and Element Lad already on the team, though.

I believe all those he favored but Laurel Kent were his own creations, so I can't fault Levitz too much for paying more mind to them.

As for the Historical Speculation ... no, not Cosmic Boy! Though maybe we can retcon in a membership for him.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I wonder if there's an in-story reason for Nightwind consistently getting rejected, though? She was also the first to gain membership in the 5-Year Gap. If Levitz really did create all those others, then I can't fault him for passing up on Nightwind. Especially since telekinetic Tellus has powers similar in effect (moves things around). But given that her powers don't strictly duplicate anyone and she's been in the Academy for a while, it's not surprising to see that a lot of fans (on LW at least) would have given Nightwind a chance had they been allowed to vote.

Hmmm... if not Cos...

Circadia Senius?

Posted by Xben on :

How about Rond Vidar?

Posted by Future on :

Wouldn't it be interesting if perhaps Nightwind had something in her past or a personality deviance (picked up by Saturn Girl scanning applicants) that was secretly her real reason for ongoing rejection?

Perhaps it would have been more interesting in-story to have Nightwind be the long dormant Manhunter, though I'd hate to have the character meet such a fate.

Ooh! Good guess, though not Circadia either.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Dream Girl? (though that would be funny)

I know Lamprey and Nightwind and many other students were once rejected for not being ready. Maybe the real reason for Nightwind being passed up was simply lack of maturity. I read somewhere that her new "look" with the hood and all was an attempt to be taken more seriously.

Posted by Future on :

I recall reading that too, IB. I actually really liked that idea - despite the fact they're not always drawn as such, we have to remember these are impressionable teenagers trying desperately to please their idols.

Neither Rond Vidar nor Dream Girl were a member of the Society of Historical Speculation!

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I liked it too, and wish we had actually seen it work [Razz] Would love to have had Nightwind's Legion membership documented in an actual story.

Hmm... somehow I don't think it's Brainiac 5, as that would be too obvious.

Phantom Girl?

Posted by Future on :

Tinya isn't a member either. I'll give my first big hint ... the character in question IS a female.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Probably too obvious to be true, but... Harmonia Li?

Indeed, too obvious to be true!

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Lightning Lass?

Posted by Future on :

Not Ayla either.

Another hint: Membership in the Society of Historical Speculation helped contribute to this character's origin.

Not Shadow Lass.

Hint: This character isn't necessarily a Legionnaire.

Chaim has it! As revealed in the Who's Who in the Legion mini-series, Silver Sword had her humble beginnings as a girl with an exceptional vid submission in the Society of Historical Speculation.

Over to CMK.

I can't even remember who Silver Sword is. Oh well.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

She was one of the non-Legionnaire heroes that Universo had captured in the "Universo Project" story.

In what setting did the Legionnaires first see a usable time cube?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Quoted from our very own CMK's help file:

quote:
Trebia Rijleigh of Buenapar was a member of the Society of Historical Speculation, who call themselves knights and act out historical incidents as they might have happened. After Trebia presented a re-creation of the War or the Roses, she was given, as an award, armor and a silver sword which were thought to be ordinary metal, and which, to anyone else, is. Somehow, though, the equipment unleashed a power within her that gave her strength and invulnerability and enabled her to fire laser beams from the sword. The Silver Sword became a heroine on Buenapar, and agents of Universo brought back tales of her from there. Universo decided that she would be an asset to his army with which he intended to attack the Controllers' homeworld, and kidnaped her, hypnotized her and held her on a prison planet for several months. She was freed in February, 2987 by Saturn Girl and returned to Buenapar by Atmos (Legion of Super-Heroes (2nd series) # 32-33).

I'll go with the obvious: At the Metropolis Science Fair, at which Rond Vidar was demonstrating it?

Posted by Rond Vidar on :

I would too.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

That's the correct answer.

Not a particularly difficult question (I had some trouble thinking of a good one) but I thought it would sound a bit off for a kids' science fair to include a time-travel device. I guess in the 60's writers (especially teen writers?) didn't think one bit of science fiction should seem to be a more complicated field than another.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I thought there might some trick to it with it being a time travel device!

Next question:

The first mission of the New Earth Legionnaires team involved a crisis concerning which two cities?

Jakarta and Melbourne?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Jakarta and Melbourne it is!

Wow! I can't believe I remembered that right.

I also vividly remember Tashkent and Nairobi being destroyed... along with several others whose names I can't remember. 8 cities destroyed in all, brrr. Does anyone remember which 8 those were? I don't know and I don't have the issue with me, and that is NOT my trivia question either [Razz] (Demanding aren't I?)

My actual question -

According to 31st century history, who was a Panamanian strongman?

George Washington?
