Since there's a few Dani fans here, and since you never know where a mutant is going to pop up, I thought we could use a thread to keep track of her.

I've got two sitings to start with:

The Hellions #1 - She's only on two pages and only gives a short speech, but the art is nice.

X-men: The End: Heroes and Martyrs #4 - She's only on one page in this, but it looks like she's going to play a big part in the story latter on. I know The End is an alternate reality, but I think we might get to see what Claremont thinks her ultimate power levels could be.

I'd love to see Roberto, Amara, Sam and Rahne in a book consistantly for a while! Though, I must admit, Roberto's incredibly busy for someone stuck in book-Limbo.

But, yes. I'd like to see those four get some page time for a while. Though, if that means bringing X-Force back as book... maybe not. I can go without... *shudders*

Dani rewled. Especially when teamed with Illyana AKA Magik.

Then Claremont was "let go" or whatever, and the X-Books went straight into the crapper and Dani wasn't seen again, in, like, FOREVER, until she showed up again with Locus-- who seemed a LOT like Illyana but wasn't her.

Umm... I guess that's all I have to say... aside from the fact that I really really ENJOYED The Hellions # 1, much to my surprise.

That would be cool -- and add X'ian to that list. It's weird to think that these guys are veterans at this point. I don't know if it's been done, but I'd love to see a story where they just got together and talked about all the crap they've been through (unfortunately, as blasphemous as it may sound, I wouldn't want Claremont to write that story at this point).

You mean like the "On the Road" issues of X-Force except for a few changes in characters?

Doesn't it depend on who is writing and drawing X-Force? I thought X-Force had some excellent stuff while Jeph Loeb and John F Moore were writing.

Chalk me up as another huge Dani fan! Like Lash, Dani and Illyiana were my two faves of the New Mutants, and I hope that if we can't get Magik, we at least get to consistently see Dani somewhere.

And Drake, that story you mentioned in decades overdue [Big Grin] . I'd love to see it (and I'd also love to see one similar with Kitty).

the origional new muties rocked. i liked the "on the road" with sunspot, warpath, siryn, dani, and boom boom in x force. its the only part of xforce i bought

joss wheden would be great to write some recap adventure or elseworlds story with the new mutants. and plenty of kitty pryde cameos like in the old days. he seems to get the old essence of the xmen better than claremont does now. is claremont really writing these stories or is it some craptactular ghost writer?

these are all some of my favorite characters though. except danis getting the psylocke treatment. what exactly are her powers now and why...

She's back to just casting illusions. Although, in Claremont's "The End" she still has Valkyrie powers. I've been avoiding Claremont, too, but the end isn't bad. Maybe because it's all one long conclusion. It's not often that Claremont ends anything.

I wish Dani's connection to the Valkyries would get examined. Guess it won't happen till there's an Asgard to be connected *to* again...

Did Dani ever meet Barbara Norris or Samantha Parrington? Maybe they could share an issue of MARVEL TEAM-UP... oh, all-right-- Spidey or Wolverine can tag along if they *have* to...

I agree about Dani and the Valkyries, ML. I was hoping that, along with Beta Ray Bill, Dani would prove to be a last surviving remnant of a dead culture. She could be *the* Valkyrie and perhaps have to engage in a special ritual to the new Valykries that eventually arise.

I also want to endorse this series for anyone not getting it too. Plus, the third Summer's brother will finally be revealed in an issue or two.

FB, that's a really cool idea and one I never considered. I think Dani as the Valkyrie would be pretty cool! Not sure if other fans would go for it, but I would love to see Dani more involved in other parts of the non-Mutant MU.

And I want to lay odds that it'll be completely inconsistant with Nicieza's plan when he introduced that plot element.

Ha! I wouldn't dare take that bet against you!

But now that you mention it 'Boot, and since you usually have the scoop on these things, do you know what Nicieza ever intended for that plot? (has he ever said?).

I remember us discussing this before in the Dangling X-Men plots thread, but I don't remember if you ever said.

Multiple times actually, and he dropped two or three blatant hints in the comics themselves, but wasn't allowed to actually say it because the character was "too minor."

It was going to be Adam X (codenamed X-Treme), born when Katherine Summers (Scott & Alex's mum) was raped by D'Ken after hers and Corsair's abduction [At this point, it should be noted that "Third Summers Brother" is a fan-term. What Sinister actually said to Scott was simply "your brothers," before 'correcting' himself when Cyke picked him up on it.]

The hints, BTW, were in X-Men #39 (a spotlight issue on X-Treme and Cyke's grandad, actually) and an issue of Captain Marvel v2 (the first Genis series, which only lasted six issues, written by Fabian). X-Treme's also one of the characters visible in the M'Krann wave in XM41, fighting Erik the Red.

If it's anything like the identity of Gambit's father, I'll pass. I don't read X:TE but I always want to keep up by checking it out in the store. For my part, I'd endorse not reading. I'm also curious how long it will be after Claremont leaves x-books again before someone retcons the identity of Gambit's father.

Anyway, there's no real mystery about the identity of the brother of Scott and Alex. (Please note that Sinister NEVER claimed that child was a Summers. His comment was simply about "brothers".) The evidence has practically screamed Adam-X is that brother via their mother and D'Ken.

Dani News!!!

Posted by Jorg-EM on :

Dani got some good work done in X-Force. I liked when she was a SHIELD agent and posed as a bad guy (cool costume). Also liked when she went kinda cosmic under John Francis Moore!

I wouldn't mind seeing Dani as the newest Valkryie though! That would rock. A native american viking warrior goddess. [Wink]

heck she's already a bit confusing much like Donna Troy why not make her a Valkyrie! jk, i like that she's more like her original self again and her powers are not too funky. Though the bow with psychic arrows was cool.

Posted by Caliente on :

I liked the AoA psi-bolts personally. Wish they'd done that in 616... *sigh* But, I'm kinda glad she's back to normal just because all the new powers got really, really confusing. And the death sight was creeeepy as all hell.

What was the deal with her affinity for animals? Was it ever really explained? Did they ever develop that side of her more fully or are they sticking with the fear powers?

Posted by Caliente on :

Her 'affinity for animals' comes from the fact that she can communicate with them... kind of. When Rahne transformed into a wolf, she and Dani found that they could speak to each other. (And, when they weren't transformed, they shared an empathic link.) So, yeah, her animal powers were developed. Nobody ever really used them, though. I think I saw them once in New X-Men.

As for the 'fear powers'... they've changed a lot over the years. As of now, she's pretty much back to pre-Valkyrie stuff. When she was Valkyrie, she could see how people were gonna die and stuff. And then, after she fell from Asgard, she did the psi-arrows to strike people down. Then she got these quantum powers through a series or weird coincidences and other random arse crap and they went away nearly as quick. We haven't seen the arrows, since. She's always had the animal telepathy, though. That's a constant.

*breathes* So... yah. There ya go. More than you'd ever want to know. [Wink] I just love my girl... I RP her like a dork. ^_^

With Bendis running that universe it's pretty much open season on any character not created between 1970 and 1980.

Look who's being brought back, Colleen Wing and Misty Knight? Luck Cage? Spider Woman? Dazzler? Power Fist? Moon Knight? Where's Ghost Rider?

Well I'm actually looking forward to that Colleen/Misty mini but the point is if Marvel's looking to do a cull of underused characters(mutants especially) a lot of later favorites seem to be fair game.

They better not be doing anything drastic with Dani.

Amanda Sefton's birth name is Jimaine Szardos.

Her former codename was Daytripper and she's currently the 2nd Magik.

Yes, Nightcrawler & Mystique are related. Mystique is Nightcrawler's mom.

Er no, two completely seperate characters. Mystique (Raven Darkholme) is Kurt's biological mom, Margali is his adopted mom and Jimaine/Amanda's biological mom. The fact that Raven is Kurt's mom was revealed in X-Men Unlimited Vol. 1 #4.

Dani, like most of the New Mutants, seems to be Marvel's Infinity, Inc.- the inheritors to a great legacy that are being used as whipping boys/girls so as not to allow the more marquee X-men to suffer drastic alterations.

Mind you, I like seeing my favourites suffer some, how they rise to the challenges writers put them through- that's why I like them. I just hate when they are sent to Limbo. And that's what I fear Dani has in her future.

Posted by legionadventureman on :

Who from the original line-up of New Mutants is still active on the team?

Just Rahne, but not till X-Factor starts.

Shan and Dani are supporting characters in New X-Men, but they don't get much action.

That's a good analogy. The period both came out of is sort of a lull in terms of the energy in their main titles. To me, X-Men peaked at issue 150 with the Magneto storyline. It plateaued and went into a slow creative decline until Silvestri and Lee injected some new energy into Claremont's verbose scripts.

Okay...so what became of Roberto (Sunspot?), Magik (Illyana)and Magma (Amara)?

Posted by ActorLad on :

Roberto's joined the H*llfire Club (for the 2nd time), Illyana's dead (Well every once in awhile it's hinted she not), and Amara's seemingly just accepted Dani's invitation to start working at the school but who knows if that will actually happen due to HOM. [Frown]

Illyana's not dead in House of M. And I believe that's a perminent thing. She's also been deaged. (Or, rather, not aged in Limbo.)

Sam also recently (between the X.S.E. and Cable/Deadpool stuff) hooked up with X-Force.

IMO, no. We saw Rahne tale Illyana out of Limbo, supposedly to prevent her from ever becoming Magik. Of course, we all know that there was another Illyana who came there with another set of X-Men who escaped. Hmm...

I suspect her state of living will be altered but I don't see the point of bringing her back as a child again.

Im a little fuzzy on the whys and wherefores of Illyana's lost childhood, but wasn't it in X-MEN 160 that her kidnapping in Limbo took place? And if so, who abducted her? I remember by the story's end, Illyana had aged seven or so years and later on had developed magical powers from (again, i forget) an unknown source...

What became of her after joining the New Mutants i havent the foggiest.

Well, if she hadn't been aged, she'd still be a teenager in "current" continuity, so... I don't think they'll have to futz with her age.

Of course, if the rumors are true and she's slated to be in Astonishing X-Men as Kitty's supposed replacement after she goes to Excalibur (Who knows if ANY of that is true!), then they would. Soo... long story short... I have no idea.

And LAM, if you want more information, you can always go to uncannyxmen.net. They have spotlights on a number of mutants including a large number of former New Mutants (Illyana being one of them). Just a suggestion since I'm too lazy to explain crud.

The demon sorcerer Belasco abducted her. Time in Limbo was much quicker than time on Earth, so Illyana went through a lot in what seemed to be seconds on Earth.

Illyana came out, moped for a little, and finally joined the New Mutants. She hung around with them until Inferno when she apparently turned into the child she would have been had she not bee abducted. Later, she contracted the Legacy Virus and died.

I think the rumors of Illyana coming back stemmed from before the return of Colossus. Some people thought she was the one actually coming back.

Last time Illyana showed up, she was a young child. How would she get to be a teenager? I guess it's no different than the New Mutants catching up to the X-Men in age. *sigh*

After looking over the possible choices for the Four Horsemen, these are my selections:
Pestilence - Dark Beast (this seems to be right up his alley.

Famine - Erg (his image just screams famine)

War - Havok (IMO he's always been more than a little bit warlike)

Death - Dani (she's had considerable experience with death, so...

What are your choices?)

I'm betting on Polaris for War and Dani for Death. The big question is who's the fourth horseman? It must be pretty big if they aren't hinting at it with the rest.

Dani was a teacher in New X-men, but Emma Frost kicked her out into the street, so I doubt she's going back to work for her anytime soon.

Hmm, Dani-Death vs Frost; there may be some righteous smiting going on. [Smile]

Of these, only Blob in #3 and Archangel in #5 (not a typo) are referenced in the solicits, although #1's out and preview pages of #2 (some of the pages are for #1 and the pencils-only are for #3) show what I think is Jubilee (although she's drawn waay too old).

Chamber barely rated two pages in issue #1, so I'm not getting my hopes up for Dani having a big role. Then again, maybe she'll be the one to take down the killer.

Re: Archangel

Archangel depowerment is under question, since he's in the 198 Files thing, and they're supposed to all have their powers. So much for A-listers loosing their powers.

RE: Horsemen

I'm thinking Dani's Death and Sunfire's War. I think Polaris one, too, but I don't know which one.

That cover (for X-Men #184, I think Reboot means) suggests that Havok can be crossed off the Horsemen list.

Arhinochne, did I mention that Nomad, Hawkeye, Blue Beetle, and Firestorm are among my faves as well??? I think DC & Marvel have a personal vendetta against me. [Wink]

Ouch. What happened to Nomad?

Back on topic. I like that Gen M cover, it really captures Dani's personality. I wonder, does the story take place in Mutant Town? If she's living there now there may be a good chance of her showing up in X-Factor.

Damn. I liked him.

Guess I can't complain too much, since I haven't read Captain America in, like, a decade.

New Dani sighting! We get a scene of her saying goodbye to the kids in New X-Men #22. It's only a page and a half, but the issue's good. I may have to rethink dropping this title. For those who quit the title because of the roster change: Dani is the only character that's out of the picture so far. No student's been written out yet. And X-23 isn't nearly as annoying as she ought to be.

I don't see anything that says that characterGambit is Death... A Horseman yes, but not necesarily Death. I think Pestilence would be more appropriate myself...

Reboot,

That is NOT the page that I read earlier....there was a bit of Marvel press release included as well. It seems that this piece was edited after posting.

I could have read it wrong, I admit but they specifically were discussing Death in the original article...right next to those images.

From ComicBookResources:
"Sunfire has already been revealed as a new Horsemen, but for a MAJOR hint as to who will be the Horseman Death, check out this unseen cover to X-Men #185." This article accompanied the artwork and cover that was in the newsarama article.

What Drake said. Nice to see one of my fave artists Larocca has found his mojo! His last issue stunk!

I think that's because he's gone inkerless again now. Miki was ruining his pencils...

Drake,

Thanks for straightening me out. I did in fact read that on CBR but instead linked to the Newsarama article like an idiot.

Why is everybody so sure it's Gambit? Mystique was on the list, too.

Posted by CJ Taylor on :

Arachne, recent artivles at CBR and Newsarama both have spoilers released by Marvel stating that one of the Horsemen, Death, is shown in accompanying images from upcoming issues. Gambit is shown menacing Rogue, with a rather drastic makeover.

I'm hoping this is a storyline we're going to see played out. It's been hinted that Mystique is going to get Gambit out of Rogue's life. Maybe this is part of her ploy.

Also, looking at the images posted, I think we can say who's wrapped up in "Torso's" bandages...

Posted by rtvu2 on :

Mystique is slated to join an X-book as revelved in newarama today.

Look for her and Sabertooth to join Rogue, Iceman, Cable and Cannonball in X-men.

Posted by Arachne on :

Newsarama's late, that came out last Friday.

I haven't seen anything stating that the person on that cover was Gambit. Mystique's a shapeshifter, remember?

Posted by Reboot on :

Okay, I was hesitating on whether to pass this on, since I've seen no solid source and it may just be a combination of Chinese Whispers and wishful thinking that's linking it to Moonstar.

Still, with that health warning...

There's a rumour going round that the "former mutant" mentioned in the Avengers: The Initiative #3 solicit is Moonstar. Passing it on without guarantee or warranty.

Posted by Arachne on :

Interesting. Thanks, Reboot. [Hug] I'll have to keep an eye on that. [Smile]

Hmm, Apparently Click Here For A Spoilerit's been confirmed in Civil War: Battle Damage Report. So what the heck is Civil War: Battle Damage Report?

I'm afraid to get my hopes up too much.

Posted by Reboot on :

I'm pretty sure it's an Official Handbook, but written in-character as Iron Fuhrer.

Posted by Arachne on :

Thanks. [Smile] I guess this means I should check out Avengers:The Initiative #1 next week.

Posted by Arachne on :

Jim Cheung is doing the covers. That's interesting; he drew X-Force when Dani was back on the team.

Yay! Pity I most likely won't be able to get my hands on the series until it's tpb-ed.

I read this, but I didn't see Dani... unless she was the very... well-developed woman making comments about the new 'recruits' when they arrived at Camp Hammond.

I like tha name of the camp and I think I'll like Cloud 9 (I *know* I will if her power comes from where I think it does), but that's about it. Dan Slott has earned lots of credit, for me anyway, with SHE-HULK... so I'll stick around for awhile.

I think the super-powered army could work in a brand new comic universe in a pretty powerful way. But I don't think it will stand the test of time in an ongoing shared universe like Marvel's.

Soldiers are at their most effective as a mass; individuality's not the name of the game. That's a direct conflict with super-heroes, in general. I don't know that that's something that can be overcome, here. We'll see.

I really didn't like the drill sergeant guy. His counterpart in SHE-HULK, Southpaw, was the least successful thing about that series, for me. I'm sort of sorry to see her mirrored here. Basically, I think the gigantic one-armed thing looks stupid. All I can think when I see these characters is 'future horrendous back problems'. Aside from my dislike for his power-set, he came off as generic and completely stereotypical. Which might have been the aim, come to think of it.

I loathe the direction Marvel seems hellbent on following till everything's lost in the dustcloud of their passing. I keep thinking there must be *something* behind it all. And there's enough bits I *like* here and there to keep me interested... appalled, but interested.

Reed Richards was taken to the brink... some probably would say over it... and only just pulled back before becoming irredeemable (funny, they chose that adjective for one of their recent titles, isn't it?).

In this title, Hank Pym looks to be dancing along on that line still. He was somewhat of a cypher during CIVIL WAR-- he seemed to be squarely in the Iron Man camp, but really wasn't focused upon too heavily (that I read, anyway). Lord knows, Marvel's been dumping on Hank for what... half a decade, now? Maybe Dan Slott's the one to give the guy a break.

He could start by getting Hank the heck out of that Yellowjacket suit! It's a great *looking* costume, but don't we all know what's around the corner whenever Hank adopts this persona?

Marvel's only got so many Captain Americas, and Iron Men, etc...

I'm trying not to read much of your post, Mystery Lad, because I don't get the issue until tomorrow, but I think Dani's first appearance is supposed to be in issue #3.

Posted by Stealth on :

I browsed through the issue and I didn't much care for it, but I'm saving the details for the All Avengers thread. What I can say here is that I'll definitely keep browsing through future issues until Dani appears.

Posted by Arachne on :

Yay! She's back early! Okay, you couldn't actually see her, but she was there in Avengers: Initiative #2. [Big Grin]

Posted by Arachne on :

And I've got to say, I love that they think her appearance is worthy of being the issue cliffhanger. [Smile]

Posted by Stealth on :

I won't get a chance to browse through # 2 until the weekend of the nineteenth, because that's when the new issue of X-Factor will have arrived.

I'm glad there's something that'll be positive about the second issue of Avengers: Initiative, because the first issue made me sick. I want somebody to take Gauntlet's gauntlet and IMPALE HIM WITH IT!!

Kind of a superhero twist on that infamous soldier-kills-his-sargeant scene from Full Metal Jacket.

I am glad her appearance is a cliff-hanger as well. And knowing Slott he's going to use her Valkryie abilities. He uses all the obscure facts of characters.

That's why he's Dan DA MAN!

Finally had a chance to browse through (not buy) the issue.

I agree that the cliffhanger was well done, and I can't wait to finally see Dani in the next issue.

And that's only good thing I can say. The recruits don't interest me at all, Gauntlet is still a hateful ass rather than a likeable hardass, Justice and War Machine continue to be good characters floundering in a bad book, and the attempt to make Yellowjacket look good was partly spoiled by the ugly and inaccurate flashback.

Dani would have to play a big, big role in order for me to actually pay for what is otherwise pure tripe. Forgive me for sounding overly negative, but I have a feeling that Dani's going to end up in the same boat as Justice and War Machine.

So Dani's finally got a home! And it looks like she'll get to kick ass in the next issue, too. [Big Grin] Too bad it's not coming out till the middle of the month.

I wish she wasn't still powerless, but maybe there's hope. It looks like Magneto has his powers back thanks to the High Evolutionary. It'd make sense for him to check on his former charges.

It'd be nice if she could get a decent love interest. The FBI guy is boring. I know some people have suggested Sam or 'Berto, but to me they're too much like her brothers. She and James Proudstar flirted a bit in the original series, but I've found him pretty boring since he became Warpath. I had a crazy idea a about her and Shatterstar, but he's taken now.

I'd like to see her with someone like Roarke from the ...in Death books. The only X-character I can think of that's close to him is Shinobi Shaw. I always thought that character had potential. He's caught in his father's shadow the way the New Mutants often seem caught in the X-Men's shadows. I could see him asking the X-men for protection from his father.

I found a good fanfic crossover between the Avengers and the New Mutants (and specifically Dani) set pre-Inferno. It's pretty good stuff.

Midnight Blue

Posted by Stealth on :

I wrote "Midnight Blue." It's part of an ongoing series of alternate-universe Avengers fanfics. Dani will be a constant presence from here on and eventually join the Avengers.

Thanks for the plug, Arachne.

Yeah I went and bought it, slightly disappointed. Definetly a filler issue, here's hoping for Fraction's run to come to an abrupt end!

Posted by Arachne on :

Given that quote on the wall, there's a real good chance she's going to "Hel".

NW#5 is supposed to deal with the after effects of Utopia, so even if Fraction blows it, maybe Wells can make it work.

And as if thinking she should be fixed up with Shinobi Shaw wasn't bad enough, now I think Dani and Daken would make an interesting couple. Good thing I don't like real life "bad boys".

Posted by Arachne on :

Preview for Dark Avengers #8 Funny how the Avengers only get two panels in their own book. Well, except for Daken. [Smile]

Anyway, Dani's bargin is revealed. Sort of.

Posted by ActorLad on :

Dani has sadly not had many appearances in other media but she did have a substantial role in an episode of X-Men Evolution, which you can find here:

http://www.hulu.com/watch/84321/x-men-evolution-ghost-of-a-chance

Said ep mainly focuses on Kitty but Amara, Berto, and Sam have roles as well. It's too bad they had already dropped Rahne from the cast by the time this ep was aired. Every Dani fan should watch this at least once.

*note to mods this is a perfectly legal streaming video of the ep that was put up by Marvel*

Posted by Arachne on :

I'll have to check that out, if I ever get caught up online.

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

Wow, that Dani-in-Vegas sequence seemed pretty sapphic to me. Did anyone else get that vibe?

Here I was hoping she'd make a more X-centric choice in mating material.

I kind of grudgingly liked the issue and the twists and turns in alliegences, though I think it's sloppy that they didn't return to Vegas for at least a bit of follow-up.

Posted by Arachne on :

No not really. I think that's just the way they're depicting Hela lately.

A follow-up would have been nice, but I think they want Dani to make a bit of an entrance in part 6. Wouldn't do to show her costume and ride ahead of time.

So, New Mutants was just cancelled after 50 issues.

This is where Dani's headed now.

Posted by Power Boy on :

ooooo I didn't know that. I may give this one a flip through at the store to see if its worthwhile.

I think the premise is interesting as an explanation for an all female band.

Others I'd like to see:

Hellcat ... Photon ... and maybe some She-Hulk ...

Posted by Power Boy on :

except towards the end when they get all Valyri-ized ... you know its gonna look like the Power Rangers.

I'm thinking of that weird crossover recently that gave everybody hammers or Thor like weapons ... ala Saturday morning cartoons.

Yeah, I'll give the first issue a chance for sure.

Besides the other three Peebs already mentioned, I want Crystal to join.
