They reeled me in with Fraction/Allred's FF. I nibbled at a bit more bait and added Fraction/Bagley's FANTASTIC FOUR. I ain't gonna do a "buy 'em and try 'em all" thing here like I did with the NEW 52, but this *IS* two more Marvel titles than I was currently reading (which at present is NONE).

I'm gonna keep count of ADDS here because, I can't go nuts with this.

How 'bout you?

It occurs to me now that I am no longer flush with excitement, a lot of titles will END with this, too. Anybody losing anything they love?

HOLD UP. Am I to understand that there's a SW6esque TEENAGE TEAM OF ORIGINAL X-MEN coming to the present-day Marvel U in ALL-NEW X-MEN?

ADDED, Trish.

There's going to be an 18-plus members (LEGION OF) AVENGERS?!!? Oh, Trishes, I may have to read that...!

SHITSNACKS. Uncanny Avengers sounds good too.

I feel myself going nuts with this...!

So far just the Allred goodness that will be FF.

Will have to look at the others, but the young X-Men book might (might) get a look.

As may or may not be obvious, I've been waiting for a big ol' rebooty style event to give me a reason to check out a chunk of Marvel comics again...

It's well known...to me. As I know you too well at times.

I think I outed myself with all those Marvel posts on Facebook!! [LOL] Seriously though, the FF Allred book has me THRILLED. Such good memories I have of X-Force/Statix.

Is that Fraction guy any good? Any sense of humor? (he MUST, judging by the FF lineup)

Allred makes this one a MUST!!!

I think if most or all of these are $3.99 books (as I suspect), I'll be trying very few of them or trade-waiting at best. FF, at least, appears to still be a $2.99 book, so that helps it's chances.

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

None. Sorry, but Mervel has disappointed me too much in the last few years. They've gutted all my favorite characters and dumped new books that I was liking. They did like four Hawkeye books, saying they were ongoing, and then cancelled them after turning them into mini's. Eff Joe Quesadilla.

This may vomit me right out of Marvel comics the way the DC reboot shat me out! I'm thinking of the jumbled up Uncanny Avengers/X-Men team. It's A vs. X FOREVER!!!!! [Frown]

...

Rick ... the current issue #1 of Hawkeye ... was actually pretty damn good. I liked it a lot.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Yeah, the current Hawkeye series looks like it could be the best ever take on him!

The current Daredevil series is also the greatest thing INCLUDING sliced bread.

I'll probably be getting almost all of these Marvel NOW series since I currently get most of them anyway:

Fantastic Four & FF I'll certainly try. Allred's art makes FF a must. Fraction has been hit or miss with me, but he does have a quirky sense of humor. I think he is a writer who lives and dies on having a strong artist, so Bagley may make Fantastic Four very good.

Iron Man is written by Keiron Gillen. 'Nuff said. He's incredible. This should be great.

Thor is by Jason Aaron. Again, 'nuff said. This should be epic and chalk full of character, a combo Thor needs desperately.

Hickman on Avengers and New Avengers? Anyone who is unsure, trust me--BUY THIS. It'll probably be the greatest piece of literature since King Lear.

Waid & Yu on Hulk? Considering Waid is delivering the absolute greatest work of his long career on Daredevil, I'm willing to pay whatever it takes to check out his take on the Hulk. Plus Yu kicks all kind of ass.

All New X-Men may just be what a lot of fans are looking for. For me personally, not so much.

Uncanny Avengers...I'll sample. Not overly enthusiastic about it, but it could be wild.

Maybe we could make this a Comic Book Review Month event?

Kind of a "Marvel Now launch" / "check in on the DCnU" / "sample the Independent Revolution" combo CBRM? Whoever reviews the most series gets a check from me in the mail for $25.00? And a signed autograph?

Posted by Pov on :

Cobie, I'm pregnant. It's yours.

Send $$ now, or we can meet in six months on The Maury Show. Neither of us needs the embarrassment. Just send the check and I'll get it taken care of.

I may end up mirroring this because I happen to get some of them now anyway ... unless the relaunch breaks me of the titles.

Hawkeye was surprisingly good. Honestly, I'm not sure why I even bought it, it dosn't seem like something I would normally pick up.

I blame Legion World ... and other similar comics that are also amazing right now like Daredevil and Shade.

(Let me know what you think about Hawkeye Cobes.)

is there a list of the Marvel Now titles? I can't seem to find one that is not vague or as Lash says

"kinda rebootish, rebooty and rebootesque " emphasis on the kinda the -ish, the y, and the esque.

From what I've seen so far, maybe its time to take a break from most of Marvel, as the last reboot jaded me against DC. (I get some stuff but I'd say it is occasional readership from DC and as soon as World's Finest and Before Watchmen and Shade end ... I'd be out ...)

I'm just ... tired of feeling cheated, duped, or as if I was part of someone's September marketing scheme to throw a huge load of shit at the walls to improve sales.

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

This list from wikipedia lists new titles, gives a concept description and creative team. It's not the most up-to-date list (no Guardians) but a concise run-down of most of the titles.

I'll probably get Avengers and New Avengers, just because of Jonathan Hickman. The X-Men concept sounds interesting, but I'm still suffering from X-Men Overload Brain Burn, so I'm a bit leery.

I was buying Avengers before, so I'll continue with "Uncanny Avengers," The Original Five X-title looks good, so I'll probably add that. (and I've loved Immomen since he was one of ours... [Wink] )

The Thor: God of Thunder direction sounds interesting. I have fond memories of the old 'Thor as a young hothead in Viking times' stories they used to print.

Let me bring this to all your attention:

- best opening issue (or tied with recent Daredevil #1) Marvel has had in years.

- phenomenal writing, and by far the best I've ever seen from Matt Fraction, who is doing FF soon.

- mind-blowing art by David Aja, who brings creativity and design that makes this feel like an indie book.

- Kate Bishop of Young Avengers...already written better than she has been since the very first Young Avengers mini.

- a 70's ish street crime / modern noir tone mashed up with some good humor and wit. So far a very unique feel.

What am I talking about? Hawkeye.

By far his best series ever and there are only two issues so far. Better even than any of his West Coast Avengers stories and most of his regular Avengers stories. At long last, the promise of the character--beyond being a face in an ensemble cast--is being delivered.

Peebs and I are loving it. So are the critics. Howard Chaykin wrote a fan letter in #2. Treat yourself.

So. the abusive relationship that Marvel and I have continues ... I went back ... I flipped through Uncanny Avengers #1 ... on the shelf ... and took it home.

It was good! Not quite like old times but ... much better than our recent troubles.

My first thought was "OH. THAT John Cassiday." of Planetary and Astonishing X-Men fame.

some of the writing was a bit dorky ...
Click Here For A SpoilerRogue fights Scarlet Witch at Professor X's tombstone.

.. but it quickly spun into something else.

and then got slightly dorky again ... Click Here For A Spoilerwith the villains introducing themselves as they fought

... but I appreciate fairly original villains or at least an attempt to make some.

The art was typical Cassiday goodness ... that prioritizes story telling ... he may be one of the best breakdown artists ever!

yet ... Click Here For A Spoilerugh ... I hate seeing the comic book characters looking SO much like the movie characters ... pencil creativity should be way beyond what we are able to do in real life and through computers! and the X Mansion looks very much like the movie scenes ... where Charles X was buried.

It was a bit gory but to me it came off as pushing the boundaries storytelling rather than cheap ploys like Avengers vs. X was primarily.

I dropped the conclusion of A vs. X after buying most of it because it sucked so much. And I'm not picking up the tie ins ... which seem endless but .. I will be getting Uncanny Avengers at least through Cassiday's run!

Click Here For A SpoilerA vs. X takes an irrelevant character and kills him for effect but .. Uncanny Avengers ...has taken that character and made him .... very relevant. IMO

Oh two more things:

Click Here For A Spoilercurious to see where they take Alex Summers. They have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find an X character who hasn't been super villain at this point. Not that Havok is the bottom of the barrel ... just that its hard to find one.

and

Click Here For A SpoilerRED SKULL!!!! YEES ! YES YES YES! Why has the supremacist not attacked the mutants before!!!! (ever even?) This is the perfect villain for the introductory story arc of "Uncanny Avengers!"

I ate this book up.

Did you miss when he was mind-controlled by Erik the Red? And Madelyne Pryor's puppet? And a Genoshan Magistrate? And that whole thing with Dark Beast he eventually pretended he was just kidding after quite a lot of terrorism, throwing Cyclops out of a plane to die and stopping Polaris' heart and leaving her? And when he was bodyjacked by Evil Mutant X Havok for a bit after he got back?

Havok's been a super-villain more than most. It was a running gag for a while that he went evil every crossover.

I actually did read the X-Men during those events [LOL] bwahahahaha. [LOL]

I don't think he can be blamed for being possessed by Erik the Red though ... the Madelyne Pryor possession I think he can be partly blamed for and being a Magistrate.

I would like to see that issue where he throws Cyclops out of a plane though! [Devil]

Has he been evil within the past two years?

This is what the X-Men has come to!

Although if one was going to be critical ....

why'd they go to all that trouble saying Alex was a good guy ...

when Wolverine, Rogue, and the Scarlet With are on the cover!

but I won't be .... 'cause I liked the book.

Like I said, there were some dorky moments.

Despite Peebs' enthusiastic support for Uncanny Avengers, I think I'm going to pass on it. I like Cassaday but Remender is IMO an extremely dorky writer -- Uncanny X-Force got off to a promising start but quickly became tasteless and self-indulgent. Looks like UA is tasteless and self-indulgent right off the bat.

Remender? Oh boy, I need to pay more attention to writers name's .... I hated Uncanny X-Force so much ... I stopped buying it two issues before the series ended! Because I just did not know what was going on and did not care.

It became a mess quickly but I hung on because he was doing exciting stuff.

I thought the
Click Here For A Spoilerbrain steeling gore was ... not merely just sensational but ... a good punch in the story. IMO. The Red Skull is a bad man.

Allright well ... I am in for two and most likely the first story arc.

Especially since ... I only got two comics this week and will be dropping Dr. Manhattan ... I haven't even read it yet.

Nope--it's a new character named Sam Alexander. He was introduced comics-wise in AVX but he's also the Nova that is used in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon.

Anyway, there's definitely a lot of stuff from this that I'm at the very least curious about--Hickman on Avengers, Gillen/McKelvie on Young Avengers, Remender on Captain America, Fraction/Bagley/Allred on F4/FF, Bendis on X-Men...a lot of these characters can use some fresh blood, so I hope it works out. No, he was introduced in AVX--he was the one that crash-landed on Earth at the beginning to warn about the Phoenix, and at the end was asked by Thor if he wanted to join the Avengers--which Sam references in his Point One story.

I bought Fantastic Four, All-New X-Men and Thor #1s.

I'll wait until after Lash reviews FF and ANXM before I chime in.

REVIEW: Thor #1

Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Esad Ribic

SPOILERS follow

First I have to preface this by saying that Thor has almost never been done to me liking. Except for the Simonson era and the Lee/Kirby era, the attempts at fusing mythology, super-heroics, and science fiction have generally left me cold.

Jason Aaron was an intriguing enough choice of writer for me to give it a go. Wolverine & the X-Men may not be my cup of tea, but I can appreciate what he's doing there as a much-needed lightening-up pop-explosion that the X-books haven't seen the likes of in a very long time.

The Aaron of W&XM is nowhere to be seen on Thor. The story is as grim and icy as the Nordic wind, with Thor on the trail of a serial god-slayer. The art is drab and unremarkable.

Sometimes I think it would be best to simply move the realm of Asgard to another universe and do straight mythology, like the old Lee/Kirby Tales of Asgard stories.

Simonson proved me wrong once, but that was almost 30 years ago. With each creative turnover on Thor, I grow less optimistic every time.

WILL I BUY ISSUE #2? No.

MY RATING (OUT OF FIVE SENSOR GIRLS): [Sensor Girl]

Posted by Power Boy on :

Hmmm, thanks FL ... I didn't know Aaron was on Thor ... seems like a great venue for him, considering his Scalped series which is totally different from his excellent W&XM (except for Marvel's every other issue cross over crap meddling)

I think Aaron must be very talented to switch genres without a drop in quality.

anyhoo ... I'm an arty. I will buy a bad book for amazing art but not an amazing book with bad art ... (so thanks for the heads up) ... and I felt so lost during the past year of Thor i dropped the book despite Alan Davis' best efforts.

I'm curious about the other two titles though ... but LASH CAN TAKE FOREVER TO GET THROUGH HIS PILE OF BOOKS! [Hug] [Razz] [Yes] [shrug]

so you might as well review. [Wink]

Posted by Fanfic Lady on :

Ha ha [LOL] All right, Peebs, I'll review them later today.

I read dribs and drabs of Scalped, and liked it. When finances allow, I'd like to get all the trades and read them like a 60-issue novel.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Esad Ribic is the real wild card for me too on Thor. I'm open to just about any tone if Aaron can deliver the goods, but on a series like Thor there definitely needs to be some 'pop' in the art.

Posted by MLLASH on :

DEF don't wait on me before you review!! Peebs is so right! [Big Grin] I was planning to read them right away but got delayed by THANGS!!!

Posted by Lard Lad on :

I thumbed thru Fantastic Four #1 at the CBS today. Gotta say, Bagley's stuff in the issue made me doubletake and make sure it wasn't Alan Davis on pencils. One look at the inker, and you realize that's Mark Farmer's influence. I've never really thought of Bagley and Davis having similar styles before, so Mark Farmer, having inked Davis often, must be exerting tons of influence on the finished product.

I don't know if that's a bad thing necessarily. Davis has an iconic take on the family that's very classically satisfying. It's a similar look to what Dale Eaglesham brought when he was the original artist on Hickman's run that I found very appealing.

Unfortunately, it makes me think that the only book that Bagley's pure style really works on is Spider-Man. (You could argue New Warriors or Thunderbolts, as well, I suppose.)

Anyhow, it looked kind of intriguing, but on a super-heavy week in which I wasn't able to get every book on my pull and still went over-budget, it was a pass. If the reviews are exultant, I'll consider getting it in a future visit.

And, yeah, Marvel U and DCnU are a tough sell for me these days, anyway...

Posted by Fanfic Lady on :

Thanks, Lash.

Lardy, I'd definitely say that Bagley at his purest was just as good on New Warriors and Thunderbolts as he was on Spider-Man. I also agree with you on how much Farmer made him look like Davis, which I'll elaborate on below.

REVIEW: Fantastic Four #1

Written by Matt Fraction

Art by Mark Bagley & Mark Farmer

SPOILERS follow

Not unlike Thor, I've long felt that Fantastic Four has spent most of the last four decades spinning its wheels since the breakup of the Lee/Kirby team. And, as with Thor, only Simonson's take on Fantastic Four has wholly satisfied me as something worthy of the Lee/Kirby legacy.

Matt Fraction is the latest writer to give it a go, inherting a humongous supporting cast from his predecessor, Jonathan Hickman, whose run I found quite overrated.

Fraction has hit upon a couple of decent premises:

First, what if the Fantastic Four's powers began to wear off? Right now, it's only happening to Reed, but I think it's safe to assume that it's going to happen to them all, especially given that Ben looks human again in the flash-forward that opens the issue.

Second, what if Reed engineered a means of keeping the whole family together while zipping in and out of the space/time continuum? Well, this issue has some pretty heavy-handed foreshadowing that it's not going to work out well, but it's intriguing enough to hang in there for the time being.

The weakest scenes are the ones dealing with the most familiar Fantastic Four tropes: Ben's run-ins with the Yancy Street Gang and Johnny's romantic life. Fraction seems to think he's being more clever than I think he's actually being, a problem I've always had with Fraction's writing.

Now, as for Mark Bagley, he is one of my favorite artists and always a good incentive to try something even if I'm dubious about the writer. Mark Farmer's Davis-iszing of Bagley, however, is not to my liking. Bags needs a nice, gutsy, loosey-goosey line to shine, but Farmer -- who in addition to Davis has also inked such stylistically varied artists as Adam Kubert and Dale Keown -- seems to be under some sort of orders to keep it clean. This isn't unheard of in the long history of the Fantastic Four: during the 1970s, John Buscema & Joe Sinnott clashed stylistically on the book. But Bags' sense of dynamics, even watered down by unsympathetic inking, are still a sight to behold. Perhaps I shall become accustomed to this new look in the long run.

Overall, it's a promising start for Fraction & Bags. But it's sobering to note that some of the worst Fantastic Four runs -- I'm thinking Straczynski/McKone and Englehart/Buscema -- also got off to promising starts.

WILL I BUY ISSUE #2? Yes.

REVIEW: All New X-Men #1

Written by Brian Michael Bendis

Art by Stuart Immonen & Wade Von Grawbadger

SPOILERS follow

As Bendis' eight-year-plus Avengers run limps to its conclusion, here comes ANXM #1 to remind us that there is a reason he was once considered the hottest writer in comics.

Simply put, he has strong ideas which are simple enough for any reader to grasp.

Where he arguably falls short a lot of the time is in the execution. I've certainly argued that many times -- Bendis was one of the poster boys of the post-modern sensationalism that polluted comics in the 2000s.

Which makes ANXM #1 something of a pleasant surprise. Here we have Cyclops' team using the most extreme measures to unite the wave of post-AvX mutants, and Beast responding (after an offhand remark from Iceman) by time-travelling to the past and approaching the young Cyclops to come with him to the present.

It doesn't take a degree in rocket science to see this as an analogy for the old ways/old days versus the new. Bendis the Terrible now appears to be turning into an old softie. Instead of tearing everything down like he did when he took over Avengers, he seems to want to rebuild the X-Men from the ground up into something brighter.

There is an energy and conviction here, unseen in Bendis' mainstream work for a long time, that almost sells me on the premise, and while I fear that it could curdle into a nostalgia trip, I'm willing to give Bendis the benefit of the doubt for now.

It certainly helps that Immonen & Von Grawbadger are providing the art. They have become quite a venerable team, and their work here has a charm and dynamism that's perfect for what Bendis seems to be going after.

I haven't felt this positive about a mainstream Bendis book since the Avengers Prime mini-series. He may have some surprises up his sleeve, and mainstream superheroes are badly in need of just that.

WILL I BUY ISSUE #2? Yes.

4 SENSOR GIRLS?

OK FL, you've convinced me to have a look for FF, Thor, and ANXM at the store.

Posted by Power Boy on :

Thanks btw! I am far more curious about these books than I was before! Looks Like ANXM may even be worth buying.

(I was going to ignore the whole thing! ha!)

I tried Hickmans FF and was a bit bored but I also jumped into it at the end ... when Ronan and Crystal were split up as the end of a story line ... and i just didn't care .. I thought they were arranged anyway?

----

but the fading away of the FFs powers sounds interesting because it reminds me of one of my favorite FF stories .. XMen vs. FF ... where Doom tricks everyone into believing that Reed planned for them to gain powers in the rocket accident, for the greater good, and disfiguring Ben.

I also enjoyed Byrne's FF.

Posted by MLLASH on :

I am rather surprised to see FL's favorable reviews as I tend to feel like she is not easily impressed (I mean really, FF issues from the 1970s in the 170s-early 200s range are GOLDEN-- esp. with Perez art!!) and I know we both dislike Bendis' writing to a large extent!

So this makes me more excited to dig into these books, too--!!

Posted by Fanfic Lady on :

You're welcome, Peebs. I look forward to you contributing your thoughts on those issues.

I never read X-Men vs. FF. But after your description, I'll have to see if I can find an old trade. Thanks.

I liked Simonson's FF much better than Byrne's FF (I thought Simonson was much more progressive), but to each their own.

Posted by Fanfic Lady on :

Lash, I like some of the 1970s FF, especially towards the end of the decade when Byrne/Sinnott did the art (much better than Byrne inking himself IMO), I just don't think it was as innovative as Lee/Kirby FF.

As for Bendis, I'm fully aware that, given his past history, it could all go horribly wrong in subsequent issues, but for now I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

I think Fanfie has a great read on Bendis (and always has). In the decade since Dissessembled, he's become in a lot of ways the opposite of how he once was (in good and bad ways). He's definitely more nostalgic. More importantly, he wants his stories to have real 'heart' to them rather than just be sensational. Whether he delivers is always a crap shoot.

I haven't picked any of these up yet but will be buying and reviewing them all.

Posted by Power Boy on :

I think I enjoyed the action and the art of the FF during Byrne's run ... also Invisible Woman really got suped up at that time. (I think it was Byrne)

but I can see how it was a departure from the FF's raison d'etre of exploration.

I kind of spoiled XMen vs. FF for you. shucks.

It pits the XMen against the FF because The XMen are desperate for a cure (from Doom) for Kitty Pryde who is becoming more and more intangible.

also the X-Men vs. the Avengers mini series ... of the same time ... is far far superior to the recent A v X.

anyway, the Avengers hunt down Magneto (who is a member of the XMen at the time) for war crimes ... and there's a bit more going on then first believed. and Marc Silvestri was at his best.

Posted by Fanfic Lady on :

Looking forward to your thoughts on the relaunches, Cobie. And thanks for the kind words.

Peebs, the amping up of Sue's powers did indeed come from Byrne. And I do have the first three issues of Avengers vs. X-Men. I didn't get the last issue because it was redone at the last minute with a different creative team. But I think those first three issues are wonderful.

I picked up the All New X-Men #1 out of curiosity. I'm much more of a DC guy than Marvel guy, but check in with Marvel now and again to keep up. Nothing to complain about from either the story or art. Not enough to blow me away, or jar me out of my routine to pick it up on a regular basis. It seems like it should keep the interest of X-fans and I wish Marvel success with Marvel Now.

Posted by Power Boy on :

I went to the store today ... Passed on Thor even though I actually really like the art I just thought I needed more going on in the story.

Passed on all new xmen ... I'm just really jaded and not into spending money on dissatisfaction ... Besides I wasn't really into the premise ... Seems Like just a far reach to get more and more x products on the stands.

passed on fantastic four as well ... Thought it was interesting but slow and short ... The state of comics today .

I think the only ones I will get are the Allred ff and the uncanny avengers ... Which was pretty typical but still exciting enough for me to give it a first story arc.

I got ONE comic book at the store today. Saga. Which despite pulling some more sensationalist imagery ... Still was charming somehow from the pull of the main characters. the main characters are still fantastically written

REVIEW: INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK #1

Written by Mark Waid

Art by Leinil Francis Yu

SPOILERS follow

Having been a fan of Mark Waid since the second Flash story he ever wrote (the Armageddon 2001 tie-in), I've been very happy for him that his Daredevil run has been a critical and commercial success. Unfortunately, I don't read Daredevil unless it's something truly outrageous, like the most outre moments of the Ann Nocenti and Steve Gerber runs. So when the news came that Waid was taking over the Hulk, I was cautiously optimistic, worried that Daredevil might have been a fluke.

My optimism has been rewarded...to a point. Waid's take on the Hulk is not particularly original. It's heavily (and understandably) influenced by the awesome portrayal of the Hulk in last summer's Avengers movie, with a dollop of Peter David's legendary Hulk run.

In the first issue, Bruce Banner/the Hulk "auditions" for SHIELD by helping them take down a super-villain. Needless to say, he passes the audition. It's full of the energy and conviction that I expect from Waid at his best.

The problem lies with the art. Yu has always been a frustrating artist, either a dazzling stylist or a sloppy composer, often within the same issue. That, unfortunately, is the case here. Having collaborated so effectively with Waid previously on Superman: Birthright, I expected better.

Still, Yu might just need to find his footing, and I'm enough of a Waid fan to let the art slide for the time being. This could potentially be the start of Waid's greatest run since the Flash.

(Further incentive for skeptics: in issue #2, Hulk will go up against that smug bastard Iron Man.)

Waid's writing the Rocketeer, too? I'll have to check that out. Thanks, Cobie.

Posted by Reboot on :

I have real problems with Waid's Hulk.

Firstly, apart from That Loeb Run and the Hulkless year focusing on Banner, we've had the same Hulk since Peter David's second run back in 2004(!), the Green Scar, consistency allowing for character development, which Waid appears to have thrown out for Mute Prop Hulk ala Bruce Jones.

Secondly, Banner's spent a month trying to cure himself and decided it was impossible? For one thing, he JUST MADE SUCH A CURE IN THE LAST ARC. Second, he decided not to use it for the reason Greg Pak hinted at back when he was depowered and Jason Aaron confirmed - Banner needs the Hulk. For all his anger issues, Hulk's the sane one in the duo, and he keeps Banner on the level in turn. Third, *HULK* has been the one who's had trouble with *BANNER* - keeping him suppressed on Sakaar, and after an uneasy alliance, deciding he'd had enough and getting Dr Doom to chop him out (for a while, at least)

Typical Waid, just like when he ruined Johnny Storm for years...

DEADPOOL # 1

LOVED. IT! Very amsuing, very fun, over the top in a good way. Dinosaurs, evil dead mystic zombie presidents, Thor being flustered. The kind of fun title DC is SORELY missing now. This seems to always happen... when DC takes things in far too serious a direction, Marvel is the one that comes out with the fun comic (I strongly suspect FF will go in this direction too). Oh, and that art? Excellent. A fella by the name of Tony Moore who you may recall from THE WALKING DEAD issues 1-6.

FANTASTIC FOUR # 1

Really enjoyed it! The setup for the next year looks to be fascinating with a rather large cast of supporting players that I look forward to meeting, many who appear to steeped deep in F4 lore! It's kind-of like a F4 version of Xavier's school. A much more serious tone than DEADPOOL to be sure, but not without its lighthearted sillier moments too. JUST how I like it!

It's fun to be excited about Marvel comics again...!

First two issues of Deadpool were pretty hilarious.

Fantastic Four looks fun so far.

Captain America was really good--a hard-to-read yet beautiful flashback to Steve's childhood, some great interaction with Sharon Carter, good set-up for what looks to be a fun sci-fi adventure, and just a really solid take on Cap.

Lash, Cobie, the first two volumes of Deadpool & Cable Ultimate Collection are worth checking out. Thanks to Fabian Nicieza's subversive sense of humor, Deadpool became, dare I say it, the Marvel Universe version of Ambush Bug for a while. Avoid the third and final volume though, because the series did eventually go off the rails.

Hm. I always heard the definitive early Deadpool was the stories written by Joe Kelly with Ed McGuinness on art. [Hmmm?] I always thought that if I ever had the mad delusion to pick a Deadpool book up, I'd start with that.

Posted by Fanfic Lady on :

Lardy, I've only read one issue of Kelly's Deadpool because it happened during my 1997-2004 hiatus from comics. As I recall, Kelly's take on Deadpool was nastier more true-to-life than others. Nicieza's Deadpool was more childlike, though equally violent, which somehow came across to me as an even more disturbing, yet still outrageously funny, take. [shrug]

It was pretty cool. Unfortunately I haven't got much more info on it than that.

ah ... I found some info. It seems it's issues 272 to 278 by Thomas and Buscema.

The plot rundown seems wackier than I remember from childhood but ... if you'd like to be spoiled

http://www.supermegamonkey.net/chronocomic/entries/thor_272-278.shtml

It looks like 272 - 277 are wacky back and forth between straight up mythology and some terran plot.

278 is straight up mythological RAGNAROK!!! (that I remember from the Peebs childhood)

There is even a TPB which I may get myself actually ... because I never read the whole story and might like the wacky back and forth between mythology and terran worlds.

That story was the intro of Red Norvill. For the most part it still holds up because of Big John's phenomenal art. Thomas is also on his game in a big way (though he'd start up lose his way a bit later in the run).

Roy introduced just about all the female Asgardians besides Sif to the mythos for the first time here, as well as others like Hermod.

Buscema was great, in the real sense of the word. I was so bummed to find he passed away when researching his art yesterday.

I always thought his Avengers work was his greatest but the Thor Ragnarok story line really gave him a chance to draw full loaded pages of monsters. He could certainly do epic battles.

I actually went to find the TPB of this but my store didn't have it. as a kid I suspect I got the last 2 or 3 of the story because I really don't remember the back story of the humans ... dying, the reporter, and Red "Thor".

So after weeks of only getting one or two comics ... I have bowed to the universe. I got 9 comics today!!!

FL and other LWers reviews have encouraged me to give a few comics a shot. Dosn't mean I have to get issue 2 of anything.

Of the Marvel Now I am getting:

Deadpool 1 and 2 (compeleeeetly based on people's reviews here ... so if I hate it ... I will come for you! [Wink] I've never like Deadpool in any way. Although, really my first exposure to him was maybe X-Force ... and Uncanny X-Force recently)

Journey into Mystery (I like Kathryn Immonen's writing a lot)

Indestructible Hulk (I will blame this one on Fanfic Lass) and Yu looks like he is even more on fire than usual. I've never NEVER really followed a Hulk book. So we will see. (Although I think if I went back I might like the transdimensional travelling Conan Hulk from the 80s.)HA! And the chance to see Hulk take down Iron Man yet ... we all know Tony Stark is Douche Ex Machina. [Blood Claw]

Stay tuned for reviews.

Journey into Mystery had the Marvel Now! symbol on it so:

art was pretty good, dialogue was great, I enjoyed the beginning as a day in the life of Sif much better than the set up for the next story arc. I thought the end of the issue dragged.

Following FL's rating system:
[Superman X - Kell-El] [Superman X - Kell-El]

Two out of five Superman X's. (I don't do half points)

That dosn't exclude getting issue #2 but ... I'll be flipping through it at the store. most likely I won't get number 2.

Posted by Power Boy on :

Indestructible Hulk #1

A pleasant surprise. Yu does great art, and is at his best here but, I think the story would be better served by someone who can do better facial expressions. There was a lot of tension building in the issue and I just don't think that's his strong suit. He needs an action team book about fighting. He does great BIG and crowd scenes. However half of the issue is a conversation which could've been in the prelude page in the 'rundown' section.

That said ... I'm curious ... Its fun seeing the Hulk put the smack down ... and I like this new twist on Bruce trying to come to terms and evolve with his Hulk problem.

[Superman X - Kell-El] [Superman X - Kell-El] [Superman X - Kell-El]

I will get number 2 most likely, but predict I will jump ship after the first arc is completed or if there is a creative team switch. or a fill in.

Yay Peebs! Loving your reviews.

I was on the fence about JiM, as I love Kathryn Immonen but Sif is not my favorite warrior woman. In the end I passed. Sounds like I made the right choice.

Re: John Buscema -- one of my all-time favorites. In addition to what's already been mentioned, there's also the Thor vs. Hercules trade which reprints the hard-to-find Thor Annual #5, a flashback to an Asgard/Olympus war in ancient times, beautifully rendered by Buscema (it was originally supposed to be the first issue of a Thor quarterly, but when plans for that fell through, they ran the story in Thor Annual #5.)

That sounds fantastic! and perfect for John Buscema!

Yeah, I was quite a bit more excited at the prospect of a Sif book than I was after reading it ... it may get better.

DEADPOOL 2 was even better than 1. There is a definite Giffenesque feel, but I think it may lean more toward THE HECKLER than AMBUSH BUG here. Alls I can say is, if issue 3 is as good as 1 and 2, this title will officially be in my Top 5. IT'S THAT EASY. Just make a comic that doesn't suck.

Yes, the violence is a smidge over the top but the bulk of it is directed at Deadpool himself, who endures it with a wit unseen since... well, The Heckler. And the violence is certainly not intended to be scary or freaky, more in the Bugs Bunny/Road Runner vein. It's meant to be amusing and to me, it is. Some mgiht have a problem but I grew up watching Bugs Bunny so maybe I'm desensitized. [Wink]

And the humor? Oh yes. Very well done and much missed in comic book form. I will be posting my single favorite gag tomorrow at Lash's Super Comic Book Fandango on Facebook. Drop by, check it out and give the page a "LIKE". [Smile]

So to make this long story even longer with a useless summary, I am totes loving DEADPOOL right now and may in fact seek out those stories Fanny referred to previously. This may already be my favorite comic currently published. Based on issues 1-2 it is certainly the type and style of comic I have been missing for awhile. We'll see how # 3 goes.

I got Deadpool 1 and 2.

2 was laugh out loud funny many times. I don't usually exclaim while reading a book, in fact before Deadpool #2 I could count on one hand how many times I've exclaimed out loud while reading a book.

It's still a dark horse for me though. Deadpool seems a bit too irrelevant to his world for me to care much ... I am thinking I need a little bit of real plot along with the funny.

How can I resist issue three with Wong and Dr. Strange though?

I'm loving deadpool's chubby Shield liason! She seems much more like a stereotypical government employee rather than a super-spy. (she complains about having to work late or something. haha!)

I liked All New X-Men #1, but it seemed odd that the young'uns looked like they were from the 60's. It'll be funny if in #2 we see that they were getting dressed for a retro dance or something, but while the visual highlighted the contrast between the young and current teams, it doesn't make sense. I know it's insane to think these kids were probably plucked from the late 90's but, yeah ....

And how was Beast so easily able to travel through time? That seemed totally glossed over unless there was a time portal in the basement of the mansion that I didn't know about. And if Beast could do that, why not just go to Scott just before AvX and warn him about what was to come?

I like how they presented the present as something that does actually seem like a horrible alternate future, but imo, they shold've gone one further and start this whole thing from the young X-Men's POV. Establish their world, then have them thrust into our nightmarish present so that we see how far we've come from their perspective. There's tons of room here for meta-criticism of the comics themselves so I hope they take advantage of that.

Well, it went off the rails because it lost one of the title characters to a crossover (and that Cable series did soooo well [Roll Eyes] ). #40 remains the issue where the sheer bitterness of the writer at having his setup systematically destroyed by another book (Mike Carey's X-Men) has crept through into the writing most clearly for me.

I shilled the series a good few times here before that point. It was a good book when it was allowed to be.

Uncanny Avengers #2 was pretty good. Same old Cassaday.

However, I noticed some discrepancies between the art and story or some far fetched creative license. Haven't seen that in a while.

[Superman X - Kell-El] [Superman X - Kell-El]

The book gets two power boys on art alone. The story is wobbly, some parts are really good like the premise of the Red Skull versus the mutants and Click Here For A Spoiler Rogue's major emotional reaction to Charles Xavier's corpse

and some parts are ... just aren't sensible.

Click Here For A Spoiler Havok gets a hug from a bystander just as Cap and Wolvie are debating Cap's P.R. plan of putting the pretty mutants out front too thick for my tastes.

I give it a low rating but I will probably be getting #3. Despite the fact, it dosn't feature any of my favorite characters. Cassaday's art is dragging me along ... and the whole impending red skull smack down.

the cover alone is pretty great, except for all those crappy advertisements ruining the 60s simplicity of the design.

UNCANNY AVENGERS 2

I enjoyed it more than # 1. I'm not 100 percent sold, but I will see this arc through at the very least.

WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN 17, 19, 20 & 21 (I somehow missed 18)

Now *THIS* is a book I don't mind paying $3.99 for. Not a worthless double-page spread in sight like in WAY too many DC books, and every issue is JAM-PACKED. These actually take TIME to read. And also, it's fun. Not outright comedy like DEADPOOL, but a more... I dunno, cerebral kind of fun, I guess you could say? Anyway, thanks, Peebs, for turning me onto it! [Smile]

Haven't read an X book in years and years, but I tried All New X-Men because it's a time travel story. Because I'm so out of touch with the group, some of the glitches that DrakeB mentioned just passed by me.

The book struck me as a good jumping-on point; there was enough explanation of why people were acting the way they were without retelling their history, so it was perfectly easy to follow the plot despite skipping what came before.

It's not entirely new as a story - young person confronts older self who has messed things up royally - but it's well done. The confusion and angst of the young X-Men who've been taken to the future is set against the confusion and angst of the current team trying to deal with a lot of problems. Not a happy reunion at this point, but everyone seems to be acting like a hero.

I just wonder where it's going long term. The young ones can't remain in their future, or there won't be a future, and if they go back to their own time, it's just the Same Old X-Men.

Posted by Jay Kay on :

All-New X-Men 3 was pretty good--establishes what the adult Scott's team/new Uncanny team will have to deal with.

One thing confused me, though...in this issue, Scott and Magneto break Emma Frost out during a prison transfer. She comes out pissed and saying that her telepathy is gone due to her being touched by the Phoenix Force.

BUT--wasn't she standing right next to Scott in #1, when the three were encountering the Australian time-freezing girl?

So I'm thinking either somehow in the span of one issue, Emma got caught by the po-po and lost her telepathy without anyone mentioning it, or Immonen accidentally drew her in when he was supposed to put in Magik or something.

Also--Avengers #1? Pretty freaking good.

So I finally read Deadpool #2 (couldn't find #1) and...I thought it was hilarious! Just an all-around fun comic that just so happens to have jaw-dropping Tony Moore art.

Love the pastiches of the Presidents and love skirt-chasing Ben Franklin.

"Should we talk about the elephant in the room" - best line spoken in a comic book in about, oh, 25 years? Since the Heckler mini?

I think I'm on board for awhile! It felt good to have another funny comic in addition to Chew and Atomic Robo.

I've started with Uncanny Avengers, All-New X-Men (or whatever the one with the original 5 in it is called), The Avengers (the one with like 20 members) and Fantastic Four.

Not sure what I think so far. My first complaint is one that I've always had: the same characters appearing in multiple group books. Do Cap and Wolverine really need to star in 2 or more Avengers books? Does Wolverine have to be in like 5 X-Men books? There are so many good characters out there without titles right now. Couldn't they get a home too?

Oh and I'm also reading Hunger Avengers or whatever that Kill All Teenaged Heroes title is called. Honestly I can't see myself continuing with it. With everything going on in the real world right now, I just don't think I can read a book about making young heroes kill each other to survive.

In the 35 years I have been reading comix, I have mostly been a "DC guy;" I gravitated to their characters more, etc.

However, for about the third time in my comic reading history, I am starting to skew strongly toward Marvel (also toward Image, which has never happened)... or maybe just skew away from DC, b/c a lot of their recent product is leaving me cold (there are notable exceptions).

For Marvel Now, I am picking up the Hickman Avengers books, Young Avengers (really looking forward to that one), All-New X-Men, X-Men Legacy and trying Uncanny Avengers. Although not planning to do so, I have also found Thor and Hawkeye to be required reading. I was already reading FF and Fantastic Four and WAXM, so those were already on the list.

Wow, for me, that is a lot of Marvel titles!

So far, of the Marvel Now titles I have picked up, I am on the fence about All-New X-Men and Uncanny Avengers, but I have really liked everything else.

Uncanny Avengers just hasn't grabbed me yet, and for All-New X-Men: although we haven't seen much of her, my first impression is that the voice of Emma Frost is All Wrong, but then I have never been a fan of Bendis anyway, so no surprise.

I also going Aaron's Thor to be pretty awesome do far. It feels fresh with a grandiose-yet-viceral quality to it.

I think Marvel has *so far* been very smart to avoid some DC mistakes.

I am digging Hickman's AVENGERS, which is apparently his way of writing the LSH, but the jury is still out until I see how this arc plays.

All-New X-Men I have really been digging.

I totally hope no one is missing WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN because that is pretty much the most fun comic published.

Agreed on Wolverine & The X-Men--a while back, Bleeding Cool compared it to the Giffen/Dematteis JLI, and I think it's a perfectly valid one--great mix of great humor, fun action, and strong pathos.

Agree with of all the above. .. Just sat down and re-read the 3 issues of Thor so far, and it was quite epic, while also maintaining a real feeling that Thor is actually in danger. Very nice art, too.

CK, interested to hear what kind of DC mistakes are being avoided in your view. Although based on absolutely no facts, I get a feel that the marvel creators have more leash, that there is less of an editorial interference (or that it doesn't show as much)... I'm Probably making that up based on recent DC rumors and reports, but its hard to shake the feeling that it is true.

Also like the comparison of WAXM to JLI... The batsh*t crazy, suspension-of-disbelief goings-on, with the nice character work and punch-to-the-stomach emotional moments ... well, that's a style that really works for me.
