GRRM has written the best fantasy series I have ever read. Well, to be more accurate, he is still writing it. The next book in the series (A Feast for Crows) is coming out November 8th. I am so excited! He is also doing a book-signing in Lexington, which is about a 90-minute drive for me, so I am planning on going.

This is such a rich and wonderful series! Is anyone else reading it?

Posted by Arachne on :

I am, but I'm likely going to get it throught the SF Book Club so I may have to wait a few more months. So be sure to put SPOILER warnings on any Feast of Crow discusions!

I'm really going to have to start rereading the series soon. (So many books; so little time.) Of course, I think I've read Game of Thrones four times already.

I just re-read the whole series to make sure the events of the past books were fresh in my mind. I'll probably buy the book the day it comes out and have GRRM sign in when I go to Lexington. I would likely just get it from the library if he weren't doing the book-signing, but I can't resist the opportunity to get a signed copy.

Just picked up the first four issues to this series. Can't wait to start (have to finish The Cell and one other book first).

And did you hear that HBO will be doing a series based on the books? Each season will focus on one book so it is a planned seven season series. The Sci-Fi wire has a few details.

Posted by Arachne on :

Issues? Do you mean novels or comics? I think I saw something about a comic based on a prequel novella. I can't remember the name right now, though.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Sorry, had comics on the mind there. I meant the first four books in the series. Fevre Dream has been recently scheduled to become a comic series (can't remember when it is due for release) but I hadn't heard anything about the Song of Ice and Fire being adapted.

I'll try and remember what I saw. [Smile]

I have the books for this series and I plan on reading them, I just have to get through about 6 and half more Drizzt, Jarlaxle, and Artemis Entreri novels by R.A. Salvatore first. I'm considering waiting until GRRM finishes the series before starting to read it though. I just have too many books that I want to read right now and not enough time.

Posted by Saturn Girl on :

Hey Minesurfer, I read the first two Drizzt books and then lost track of the series. Did it stay interesting enough to hold your focus?? I know that on World of Warcraft there are all kinds of incarnations of Drizzt as a Night Elf..

Years and years ago, I wrote George RRR Martin about Fevre Dream and he said there was talk about it becoming a movie at some point, but it never came about and that was at least 10 plus years ago.

Personally, I think it'd make a better miniseries and wouldn't be that expensive to produce.

Posted by minesurfer on :

To answer your question directly, Saturn Girl, yes the Drizzt books kept my focus. So much so that I've had a hard time reading other "great" fantasy "classics" like David Eddings' Belgariad. It just doesn't measure up to Salvatore's Drizzt, imho. I can't recommend the Drizzt novels enough to anybody that might want to read an engaging story.

I was really happy to hear about the HBO series. Perhaps this will motivate GRRM to actually finish the series. He must be really rich, since he takes his sweet time putting out new books. Don't get me wrong - I love the books. I think they are the best fantasy novels I have ever read. I just wish the books would come out a liitle quicker.

I know what you mean. but I was rather lucky. I didn't find out about the series until after he had written the first 3. I got to read them all without a break. good times.

Book five is supposed to be out this summer, IIRC. And he has stated that he wouldn't complete the series until 2011. I think he's just giving himself enough time without having to crank out crap like some multiple-book series authors do.

Posted by CJ Taylor on :

hmmmm... any authors in particular, LL?

Starting with a "J" and ending with an "ordan?"

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Um, err. I've never heard of this wheel you speak of.

Actually, no one in particular. Just a few that seem to put crap out just to publish once, or even twice, a year.

Posted by Lance's realm on :

Wamu, I also didn't discover the series until after Storm of Swords was out. I still wish the next book would come out soon though. Ah well....I just hope it is done before he dies of old age.

And Scott, there is no way he is going to kick out the final 3 books over the next 4 years. I am guessing a book this year, and another book every 5 years. That means the final book will be out around 2017.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Lets see:

A Game of Thrones: 1996
A Clash of Kings: 1999
A Storm of Swords: 2000
A Feast for Crows: 2005
A Dance with Dragons: 2007 (?)

Even with the five years between Swords and Crows he's averaging less than 2.5 years between books. That does put it close to not making it for 2011. Of course, I'm not sure if the 2011 date is his own mandate or the publishers. But I would think he'd be cutting his own throat, after the HBO deal, to not finish sooner. Who knows though. Maybe we won't even see the series start until 2010.

Well..maybe...I hope you are right Scott - but I am afraid I am.

The Hedge Knight comic by George R.R. Martin. It's an adaption of a novella set 100 years or so before Game of Thrones. There's a sequel now, too.

I just ordered the hardbound collection of Hedge Knight. I'll probably wait for the same release of the sequel.

Loving Game of Thrones so far. Had to spend the last few hours in the ER with Mom again so I got about another 100 pages read.

A bad case of austiomyolitis (sp?). Going to be on IV antibiotics daily for the next four weeks. But it could be worse. She wasn't scheduled to see her doctor until Friday and by then she could have lost a finger.

Yikes! I'm glad they caught it in time.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Another night in the hospital, another 150 pages read. Hopefully I'll find time to read this when mom isn't in and out of the hospital.

I am so enjoying this book more than anything I've read in a long time. It has even inspired me to hunt down the defunct RPG version and start a campaign with my DnD group based in Westeros.

Nothing too serious this time, I hope?

I've lost track of how many times I've read Game of Thrones. [Smile]

Posted by Lance's realm on :

Scott, my prayers are with you. I am also in total agreement: I have enjoyed reading Martin's Fire & Ice series more than anything I have read in a long time. The series is so rich it stands up to rereading several times. I am currently reading through the series for the 4th(!) time. Hopefully, the next book will be out before the end of the year.

Thanks guys. She's in a care center for 30 days to (hopefully) get this infection cleared up. Seems to be doing a little better just after a couple of days.

On a brighter note, I just got my hardback copy of the Hedge Knight trade. Thinking of cracking it open before finishing AGoT.

Posted by Yellow Kid on :

I read The Hedge Knight in a collection (somewhere) and just loved it. I didn't know there was a comic until it was linked up in an earlier post. Now I just have to find the trade...and the sequel.
Sweet.

Posted by Lance's realm on :

Still waiting for Dance with Dragons. Honestly, I think I might have actually been charitable in my earlier estimates.

Posted by Lance's realm on :

And I am still waiting...*sigh*

Posted by Yellow Kid on :

I got around to buying The Hedge Knight TPB and I think it's fantastic. Wow. I read through it 3 times in a row to be sure I caught all the tiny details.
It's the kind of book to leave laying around on the coffee table for non-comic people to pick up and flip through, tightly written and beautifully painted it's an absolute must for any collector. This is one of the most beautiful comics I've seen in a long long time.

I used to joke that I hoped that GRRM would finish the book before he dies. It isn't a joke anymore, but an actual wish. I find it a little disturbing that Robert Jordan has already been mentioned in this thread. Best of health to you, George! Ah, well, still waiting...

Oh, dear. Upon rereading this thread it seems that my pessimistic prognostication was actually quite an optimistic projection. It is a good thing I have many many many other things to read, since I am now having verrry serious doubts about GRRM finishing this series.

Ah, well, you can listen to me whine about this around the same time next year...

Hopefully the Game of Thrones series on HBO next year will be good.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

The HBO series does look like a real winner. Sadly, I do not have HBO, but I'm sure I will find some way to watch it.

In other news, it has been over 5 years since GRRM's last book came out. It has been over 3 years since he has updated his "Ice and Fire update" on his webpage. (I think this is abuse of the word "update.")

Perhaps some day...

Posted by dadman on :

I know what you mean. Quite frankly, I'm a little pissed off I ever invested any time into this series.
Sure what has been published is a great read, however, there is no sign the series will ever be finished.
At this point, I don't care when (or if) Dance with Dragons comes out. I'm not buying another Ice and Fire book till the series is finished.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

I quite agree. I will likely get the next book (if it comes out) from the library. I think it is quite sad when reality is worse than my pessimistic guess. My suspicion is that Dance With Dragons will be the last book in this series that Martin ever finishes.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

I'm really anxious for the HBO series but, like everyone else, I've given up on the series ever finishing. I highly doubt DwD will ever see release in Martin's lifetime. Hell, I'm begging to doubt ever seeing it in MY lifetime.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

And we have a release date for DwD! This July 12.

George R.R. Martin’s A Dance With Dragons gets a release date: July 12

Wow! Thanks Scott! I don't check the update all that often, and...I had better sit down. I think I might be in shock...

Breathe, Lance...

I've heard of this series of books, but havent' read them. What are they about?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Rick, they are the best fantasy series I have ever read. They are much too rich to go into detail, but here is the basic plot:

(mild spoilers)

There is a king over the land. The king dies. There is good reason to believe that the king's children were not actually sired by the king, and therefore are not the heirs to the throne. This means everybody starts jockeying for position. Deals are made and broken, there are assassinations, and betrayals, and a lot of castle politics. It is a wonderful series, what there is of it.

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

The description sounds a lot like Zelazny's Amber series. Am I close?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

I never read the Amber series, Rick, so I don't know.

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

Oh, do yourself a favor and read it. Zelazny at the absolute top of his game. I've got the huge compendium book that has all ten books in it. My wife bought it for me when I couldn't find the second book in the series. Love it.

Posted by Set on :

Lord of Light, Isle of the Dead and Creatures of Light & Darkness are also pretty awesome Zelazny tales.

I've probably read Lord of Light five times.

I've been meaning to read A Song of Fire & Ice, but I tend to get attached to certain viewpoint characters and follow them through the story, and, from what I've heard, even from his fans, Martin doesn't make that easy... [Smile]

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

Hmmm, yeah, I tend to be a one person focal story reader. Never could get into things like tolstoy that had (to me) unpronouncable names and stories that shifted in amoungst five or ten different characters.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

The Amber series was one of my favorites growing up. Along with Shanara and the Covenant books. I have to say, for me, they don't hold the same attraction at my current age. But the Fire and Ice books do. Which just means my tastes have changed as I've gotten older. But I still can't get thru any of the LoTR books, then or now.

On another note, Lance, have you been following the Maester's Path? Just finished The Night's Watch. Love seeing the clips you get access to when you complete a puzzle.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Um, I dunno what the "Maester's Path" is. Fill me in, ok?

I will definitely check out at least the first Amber book.

Also, in at least some defense of GRRM, "Dance" is a pretty lengthy book. Let's pretend he wrote 1200 pages in 6 years. This means 200 pages a year, which at least makes me feel a little better about his efforts to finish.

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

Lance, Amber is the modern blueprint for familial potlitical intrigue. It doesn't get any better than this in all the fiction I've read. And thats a lot.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

The Maester's Path is a site started by HBO. You follow a set of challenges, released weekly, in order to become a Maester. Each challenge gives you a sneak peek inside the show with exclusive clips (which are probably all over YouTube anyway). It's kind of cool.

You are supposed to collect five novices too. So if you, or anyone here, decides to try please become my novice and I will return the favor.

I choose to answer the call of The Citadel. I prepare for the Game of Thrones - and ask you to follow me now on the Maester's Path.

Join us, for Winter is Coming.

Ok, Rick, stop twisting my arm. I just got back from Columbus and the St. Patrick's Day stuff (my wife is an O'Reilly, so we gotta do the big family thing each year) and I ran right out to the library and I picked up the first 5 Amber books, in 2 volumes. They don't seem very big, so I should go through them quickly.

Scott, I am also gonna check out the Shannara books too.

I actually meant to read both series many years ago, but I never got to it.

I am also going to check out how much it costs to get HBO for just the duration of the series. Or is there another way to see it?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Oh, and Scott, I agree about Lord of the Rings. The books plod along so slowly. I have never understood how they became as popular as they are.

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

Lance, far be it from me to twist the arm of a guy named after a weapon. You know what the good thing about a lance is, don'cha?

All the danger happens at the other end.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Well, if I don't like the Amber stories I am on my way to South Carolina to swipe your stinky cigars.

BTW, my library just had the first 5 books - but not the last 5. Do you recommend them all?

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

yes, the first five are Corwin of Amber. The second five are Merle, Corwin's son.

It's all good, from my perspective.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Scott, I have the same question about the Shannara books - how many of them should I read? Do they continue to be good, or do they peter out after awhile?

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

Shannara, is that the Brooks stories? I have the Castle for Sale/Sold. Havent' read them in years, though.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Rick, yes, the Terry Brooks books. Lance, I never read beyond the original trilogy (The Sword of Shannara, The Elfstones of Shannara and The Wishsong of Shannara). Sword, IMO, was the best and a good enough book to stand alone. I'd say just try it and see how you like it.

I never read more than the first five in the Amber series myself. I admit I loved how tarot cards were used to move around and actually paid a good price for a deck of Amber tarot cards at one point.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Oh, as for other ways to watch A Game of Thrones. I won't be seeing them as they're broadcast but will find a way. Can't afford HBO just for one series no matter how much I want to see it.

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

you'll probably be able to find it on some bog like I see a lot of stuff, or surf the channel, todou, yokio, or some other place like that.

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

that should read blog, not bog.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Scott, I looked up the Shannara series, and I planned reading the original trilogy even before you commented on it.

Rick, I am about halfway through the first Amber book and I really like it.

I am sure the Game of Thrones series will be out on DVD eventually, and likely with bodacious extras, so I might just wait for that.

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

Lance, Glad you like it. I wont spoil it, but its one of the books that doesn't follow all the rules... and Zelazny makes it work fantastically.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

I usually grab the DVD set if I like a series (like The Walking Dead) just for those extras. But I'm part of another forum where I can get the shows as they air so I don't have to wait.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Ok, Rick, I finished the first Amber book. You were right; it was a really good read.

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

Glad you liked it. It just goes against so many stereotypes and works. Our "hero" doesn't have things go the way you think. In reality, he would be considered the bad guy even though he's the books protagonist. While he has personal physical power and abilities, his mind is his sharpest asset. There's no obligatory love interest that finds itself in peril... and yet, while almost everything flies in the face of modern storytelling, its being done by a master and it all works so effortlessly.

You get personal stories as well as a family feud on an epic scale... and the story has really barely begun.

I'm glad you like it and hope you enjoy the rest. Zelazny mixes genre's, fantasy and mystery, so well throughout the entire ten book run.

Betencourt did a trilogy of Corwin's dad, Oberon, and while it was good, a fun read, it didn't have the sheer scope and epic feel of Zelazny.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Is it just me, or does it seem like the movie "Highlander" cribbed the basic plot from the Amber novels?

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

Yeah, I thought a little of that made it in myself. Most people haven't seen and read them both, though.

FYI for those interested in the HBO series...

HBO will be previewing the first 15 minutes of episode 1, "Winter Is Coming" tonight at 9:00pm.

The series will premiere on April 17.

I'll give it a look. Thanks Ken.

Ohp, no, I wont. I have showtime, not hbo. Dang.

Posted by kenaustin on :

Well, it will probably be available for "other" viewing no later than 9:30 or so. It usually takes about 15 minutes for shows to make it online.

Heh. yeah, I have a site or two, but they tend to be very show specific and sometimes the other venues they link to are very slow or not online quickly. Megavideo isn't linked very much anymore. Then there's surf the channel, but you have to rely on what other's have. And I have a blog channel or two, but they tend to focus only on what they person that has the blog likes.

If you have a good one, send it my way and I'll be happy to share some other sites as wel.

Didn't see it in time. They took it down.

Nope, found it on HBO's website. Looks good. Bean is an underated actor.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Well, through some sort of (apparent) screw-up, I currently have HBO, so I got to see the first episode. It seemed really good, but it suffered from one major drawback - I have read the book. Multiple times. The fact that I know what is going to happen kind of kills a lot of my interest. (I had the same problem when I watched "Gone With the Wind" last year.)

Another thing - Martin managed to pack many characters into the books without making them seem overcrowded. The film version seems really crowded though.

Finally, is anyone watching the show who hasn't read the books? Can you follow what is going on? Just curious.

Posted by Blacula on :

^ I find that having read a book (and therefore knowing what's going to happen) usually gets me more excited while watching a film of that book because I'm anticipating how they're going to adapt the important scenes or events or characters that the book contained. Often, of course, that just leads to disappointment when the scenes in my head are often so much better than what I see on screen. But occasionally there are a few happy surprises.

I haven't read any of these books though - or seen the first episode. I'm trying to decide whether I should read the books first or just dive straight into the show.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

He finished the book today (hooray!) so it looks like the July date will hold up. It looks to be quite a long book, so DOUBLE YAY!

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Just kinda funny - Amazon in Germany started shipping their books early. According to Martin's website, 180 copies of ADWD were sold before it was caught. Other distributors around the world then thought they should be able to sell their books, too. Anyway, apparently this has all been stopped; still, you might see some spoilers from those lucky enough to get an unintentional advance copy.

I have checked my local library's site every day - they don't seem to have the book in their records yet. I'm not worried; they will eventually get it in and I am sure I will have it read before GRRM kicks out his next book.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

I finally got this book from the library and read the 959 pages in 8 days. Martin still tells a great story! While it was a wonderful read, there was a lot of build-up for very little payoff. Ah, well, maybe in another decade we will get the last book.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

I suppose it is a little early to whine about when the next book will be out, huh?

By the way, I did watch the first season, which is out on DVD. I really enjoyed it! I can't wait till season 2 comes to DVD.

Never read any of the books but both seasons of GAME OF THRONES have been astronomically compelling!!! True Blood is no longer the reason I want HBO, Game of Thrones is!

Posted by Set on :

I love a lot of the characters we don't see a lot of. Ayre's fencing instructor was my favorite character in the show, until her new mysterious friend came along.

"And what do we say to Death?"

"Not today."

I don't usually 'love to hate' even the most despicable characters, but wow, Joffrey just has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, does he?

I love the face of the actress they picked for Margery. She seems to be ambitious, mercenary and opportunistic, but I'm willing to overlook that, and just stare at her face some more. [Smile] (Brienne of Tarth or whatever her name is, has an unconventional beauty that I dig, as well.)

On another message board, there was a thread from before the show first launched titled 'Sean Bean heads cast for Game of Thrones!'

After the first season, it was changed to Click Here For A Spoiler Sean Bean's head cast for Game of Thrones....

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

^ Natalie Dormer plays Margaery--she's unbelievably, fall down on your face beautiful! She played Anne Boyelin on Showtime's The Tudors series. She was stunning there as well. She's also a great actress.

I realize I never posted in this thread before. Last year I read all five Game of Thrones books and they dominated my life for a few months. Like many, I became super-obssessed with them because they are just so damn good. I'm not a huge fan of multi-novel sagas, but this is a major exception. I could go on and on and on about it but I won't. My brothers and sister and I would email each other for days about various characters and parts of the larger story.

Also, the show has been fantastic too! So many actors nail the characters perfectly: Tyrion (my favorite), Littlefinger, Cersei, etc.

Click Here For A SpoilerI have high hopes for Sansa, Arya, Bran, etc really shining in coming seasons. This isn't much of a spoiler but part of what's so great about these books is never knowing who will die. Ayra is my absolute favorite of the children, though Jon Snow is close. But I've come to love Sansa as well.

Much like comic books, I love the ancillory characters. Whenever they show up--and usually each character gets a major scene--I eat it right up.

I haven't read the novels yet. I find that, for the most part, I enjoy TV/movie versions of books better if I don't read the book first, and tend to really enjoy reading the books *after* seeing a TV/movie-i-zation, as it feels like I'm getting a greatly enriched and expanded version of what I've already seen, and can carry over the visuals of the on-screen version to what I'm reading, kind of getting the best of both worlds.

(Lord of the Rings being an exception, in that I think Peter Jackson did a great job of trimming down the books a bit, although I didn't love every one of his choices.)

Novel and movie, IMO, have very different strengths, and it's generally a mistake to try too hard to make a movie *too* faithful to a written source. It might be a *perfect* adaptation of the source material, but who needs that? Better to change what's necessary to play to the strengths (and limitations) of the new medium, IMO.

Posted by lowercase mllash on :

Arya is my fave character on the entire show (after the end of season 1)!! Dany is a close second, Brienne is way up there and of course all the handsome guys-!! But really there's FAR too many awesome characters to even begin a faves list. All of the child actors are BEYOND amazing... not a single dud in the whole young bunch, which is surprising because some of them are REALLY young.

I am *so* glad I gave this show a chance... that first episode is almost overpowering with the new characters and without the recaps on EW.com, I might have been lost at times, but there was no way I wasn't returning for episode 2 after the shock end of episode 1!

Now that I'm vested in the show, I probably won't try to read the books until the show ends-- which will hopefully not be for a long while-- but I have heard the show is pretty faithful to the books (unlike Walking Dead and True Blood).

And yeah, the show is very faithful to the books. So far, the show basically just cuts out a lot of parts (otherwise it'd be 30 episodes a season...though sounds awesome). I'm curious as to how much this will continue since later books are outright huge in content.

Both books & show are of such high quality that you can't go wrong no matter how you approach them.

(PS - I haven't seen season 2 of the show yet, though I of course know what is going to happen).

Season two veers off the book a lot more than season one. It's a mix of things that theoretically happened "off-screen" and some things that just seem tossed in to keep popular season one characters on screen more. Still good viewing but there were things that just bounced me out of the story sometimes.

My wife checked me out the audiobook version of A Dance With Dragons. I'm so used to the TV cast's voices that I'm having a hard time with the accents the reader has chosen.
