Well, I was really bored so I rented DALLAS seasons 1 & 2.

Linda Gray is a sensation as Sue Ellen Ewing.

I especially love it when she gets drunk (frequently, and not diminshed at all after she learned she's pregnant) or makes a catty remark.

She must be recognized and celebrated for her 80s awesomeness.

DALLAS S1&2, BTW, has turned out to be mega-fun and hilarious.

In which season was Click Here For A SpoilerJ.R. shot?

Posted by MLLASH on :

Not sure.... but the one who commited that act first appears in late S2!

Posted by Spellbinder on :

The Ewing women definitely were all different.

Pam was the sweet, virtuous one.

Miss Ellie was the proper, maternal one.

Sue Ellen was the drunken one.

Lucy was the slutty one.

Hmmmm... sounds like my family reunion [Wink]

I had forgotten just how beautiful Victoria Principal was... just stunning. Lucy was a hottie too, I didn't remember much about her but I now see she has the funniest, bitchiest lines!

And that Ray Krebbs.... whooo-weee!

end of the 4th, if memory serves. (I'll plus/minus one season in either direction, though)

Most of the surviving cast, recently reunited in Paris! Yeah, I'm now obsessed with the show...

You'll note Linda Gray still looks fabulous.

Posted by Jerry on :

I remember hearing that the Sue Ellen role was originally intended to be a very small one. The focus of the show was to be the Bobby and Pam romance. Linda Grey had very few lines in the pilot, so she decided to show her acting chops by giving these intense emotional facial expressions whenever they put the camera on her. The directors were taken aback, and quickly got the writers to beef up her character.

I didn't realize Larry Hagman was still alive.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Jerry, it would appear you are right re: Sue Ellen... in the shorter first season, she isn't one of the 'stars' with her face and name in the opening credits, that doesn't happen until about 7 episodes in.

Kent, my bf also did not think Larry Hagman was still alive.

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

DALLAS was fun, but it paled in comparison to it's 'sequel' (which was actually conceived first, I think), KNOT'S LANDING.

Posted by Spellbinder on :

God, when I think of how much of my youth was spent watching nighttime soaps...

Dallas
Dynasty
Falcon Crest
Knots Landing
Flamingo Road
The Colbys

I was so gay, even then... [Wink]

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Of those, I only watched Dallas, and then only for a season or two (I was one of the ones drawn into the "Who shot JR?" hype, I admit. the local channel also re-ran season one around that time).

Posted by MLLASH on :

So the bf and I came up with the following drinking game, based on DALLAS S1&2.

Take a drink whenever:

SUE ELLEN has a cocktail

ANYONE is on the telephone

LUCY is macking a guy

The word "EWING" is spoken

Chug your drink whenever:

JR is physically assaulted

No drinking allowed whenever:

MISS ELLIE appears onscreen

oh,

that's not nice.

I think I could get in at least four beers without being tempted to lick the screen.

Okay, honesty time. One lite beer.

So I was at SPIN STREET and decided to buy DALLAS Season 3.

Yes, the final episode is the famous shooting of JR ep.

WEIRDNESS DEPT.: The set included 2 disc 5's and NO disc 1.

So it's gotta go back, but we read the synopses of the disc 1 eps and went straight to disc 2.

Sue Ellen isn't drinking, but she IS seeing a shrink, and is meaner to JR (deservedly so) than ever.

New Dallas tonight!

Yes and I am TOTALLY THERE!!!

I had forgotten I started this thread but seeing it reminded me of my awesomeness, and Sue Ellen's!!

Oh, I wonder if she'll be an ice-tinkling alkie again??!!?!?

I actually ended up getting all the way to like season 5 of my DALLAS DVD buying, but my interest in mass TV-DVD purchasing waned, and I eventually sold them off.

I wish I had kept them now!!

I loved Dallas back in the day, but I haven't watched an episode in years!

I remember when I was in second grade, I'd try to imitate the way Victoria Principal walked towards the camera in the title sequence.

Ah, memories.

Will check out the new version tonight.

Wow, that was great trashy fun, even more than I expected! I'm in for the duration!

Tits!!! Makes me wish I'd taken notes... but from memory--

I was rather impressed with the stunning and frankly DAZZLING amount of backstabbery going on! I mean, DANG-!

John Ross isn't quite the playa his Daddy is, though he wants to be.

Was great to see Ray and Lucy but I really want to know where they fit into the Ewing legacy and where they stand with the family. Not holding my breath on them appearing much with this being only a 10 episode season.

So... WHO is behind fuax-Marta??

Jesse Metcalf and Josh Henderson are apparently as much BFFs offscreen as Hagman and Duffy always were, and I read they are really enjoying themselves... always good news for a TV show.

Posted by MLLASH's back on :

My only real disappointment:

I'm a SUCKER for actor name credits appearing with images of the actors from the show, as the original DALLAS did... and I was a little crushed they didn't go that route here, although the opening is otherwise similar.

Posted by Jerry on :

Don't know that I will be able to keep up with all the episodes. I did catch most of the first hour. The young Ewing boys are cute as all get out. I predict success.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

So I think that's about the maximum number of plot twist one can fit into a two hour period!

John Ross: Totally his father's son, though he's got a lot of growing up to do if he really wants to outfox his old man! Love the scene with him meeting with/hiring the private investigator! It totally evoked old school Dallas!

Christopher: The "having to prove himself a real Ewing" thing makes a lot of sense for the character. I wonder if the fact that his birth mother is Kristin Shepard (which among other things, makes him Sue Ellen's biological nephew) will ever be brought up?

Elena: She is total love! In many ways the most sympathetic character of the new generation! And I love the mysteriously broken by outside parties romance with Christopher! "Who Sent the e-mail?" isn't quite as catchy as "Who Shot J.R.?", but it's actually got me really intrigued!

Rebecca: I thought she was going to be boring, but then they through in the plot with a scheming brother (who really intrigued me in the little screen time he had). Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Bobby/Ann: Okay, so the Bobby-has-cancer plot was the one thing I didn't really care for, but I loved him taking over the Miss Ellie role of trying to keep the family together/avoid squabbling/etc. She's kind of boring so far, except for the groovy scene with her about to shoot the intruder (was that someone working for John Ross, or someone else?).

JR: Larry Hagman pretty much dominated every scene he was in. My one big concern about the new kids is that, while they may be pretty to look at, I'm not sure they're going to ever have the kind of charismatic gravitas of Hagman.

Sue Ellen: I loved her taking Elena under her wing! We didn't get a whole lot from her, except the whole possible-governor-campaign plot, but what I saw I enjoyed!

Faux-Marta: Yeah, she's definitely intriguing. I'm kind of hoping the real Marta shows up again as well, though!

Ray/Lucy: Would've liked to have seen more done with their cameo, but I suppose it was nice to have them at the wedding anyway. Didn't Ray have a kid or two who could show up?

And speaking of which, this show need a Barnes! I'm thinking a romance between John Ross and Cliff's daughter what totes drive JR crazy!

Posted by MLLASH's back on :

ooooh, EDE, you're being so into this means even MORE fun for me with this!!

I totally had forgotten Christopher was Kristen's birth child!!

Excellent news on the ratings front for DALLAS:

I caught it last night (thanks to the hype here). Like many of us, I kinda grew up on Dallas, even though I didn't watch it thru it's latter years. The new show has potential, but most of the new characters lack the old stars' charisma (as EDE points out). If Bobby, J.R. and Sue Ellen weren't onboard, this show would probably be dead in the water.

Some thoughts:

Rebecca/her brother: Is their scheme about money, or is this about revenge? I hope it's the latter and that they turn out to be the Barnes connection EDE mentions this show really needing. Could they be Cliff's kids (EDE mentions a daughter--hell if I can remember all the old family connections!)?

Cliff Barnes/Pam: I hope Ken Kercheval returns as Cliff and Victoria Principal as Pam! Pam's story needs to finally be resolved and her returning would be significant for Chris.

Elena: I was really, tremendously distracted by Jordana Brewster's skeletal face! I know she hasn't always looked like that. Anorexia much?

Posted by MLLASH's back on :

Don't hold out for Pam's return, I hear Victoria Principal is flat-out not interested and was never close to any of her castmates outside of Patrick Duffy.

However-- Ken Kercheval as Cliff Barnes IS a definite!!

GASP!!! J'LOVING the idea that Tommy and Rebecca might be secret Barnes offspring!!!

TNT ON DEMAND is offering some "iconic" past episodes of Dallas, and I watched the original series premiere as well as the "Barbecue" episode last night from the first season in 1978, that revealed much of the backstory between Digger Barnes and Jock and Miss Ellie. GREAT, enthralling episodes.

My family spent most of our weekends when I was growing up at my grandparents, and the ritual was pretty much to drive there Friday nights and watch Dallas.

For the record, I'd actually forgotten a lot of the more complicated family connections, but thanks to the internet, it's pretty easy to look them up!

There's also JR's other two kids who could show up at some point.

Posted by Fanfic Lady on :

I agree with most of what you guys have said. And, like Lardy, I remember when Jordana Brewster was a fresh-faced, healthy-looking startlet, and am saddened that she appears to have succumbed to the pressures that Hollywood puts on actresses to look thin.

I've also put the DVDs of the first four seasons on inter-library request. Can't wait!

I had to WikiPedia Dallas stuff last night, too, Edie! It also mentioned that Bobby had a biological child (another son, I think?) with Jenna, the character played by Priscilla Presley!

Well, obviously he's in it, so hope springs? Some stuff I read last night speculated that Victoria as Pam is a super-secret upcoming twist. But take that with a grain of salt.

I'd read that Cliff's on his way--hopefully to plot and scheme with his two kids! [Yes] I also hope they do more with Ray and Lucy and maybe even have Gary show up at some point. (Personally, I think Knots Landing was superior to Dallas in many ways, though it doesn't play as grandiose and iconic as Dallas.)

Oddly enough, I don't remember ever watching Knot's Landing...

Anyway, Lucas Krebbs is Bobby and Jenna's son, adopted by Ray (who was married to Jenna as of the end of the series).

Yep! I remember really getting into it when they brought in Nicolette Sheridan as Mac's lovechild daughter and Michele Phillips (of the Mamas and the Papas) as her mom. The cast of excellent actors just really sparkled together, and the writing playedup to their strengths. There was a lot of great humor, too, mixed in with the soap opera such as when Greg Sumner tried to catch Abby before she put her makeup on! Donna Mills (Abby) was legendarily admired at the time for her eye makeup.

Oh Fannie, you are gonna LOVE those first 4 seasons again after all these years!! The ending of the "Barbecue" episode in season 1 pretty much tells you ALL you EVER need to know about the total bastardicity of JR EWING. I was re-shocked AGAIN last night, even after seeing the episode a few years back right before launching this thread!

EDE, I kinda adore your childhood Friday memories, mine are similar. Granny, Mimi and I watched DALLAS every Friday for a LONG time--!! *happy sigh*

I remember when we'd go up to my grandparents' for the weekend. We'd typically get there pretty late and settle in and watch "Dallas" together. I remember my aunt had a "Sue Ellen Did It!" t-shirt. WRONG!

I was 2-15 while the show was on, so I actually remember the later years much better!

I totes remember the whole era where JR knocked up a waitress, and then was kidnapped by her redneck brothers and forced to marry her, only she wasn't really knocked up, only then later after she was miserable living at Southfork, she left him, but by this time she was really pregnant with JR's child, only she claimed that the father was James Beaumont, JR's other son via youthful indiscretion!

Posted by MLLASH's back on :

GOOD LORD! I missed ALL of that!! I definitely need to find those later seasons cheap to watch...!

Posted by lowercase mllash on :

Well that opening scene was excellent!!

JR's witty repartee with Cliff Barnes (!!!!) was excellent and didn't even try to disguise its hostility. There is no doubt that Hagman was born for this role.

It's enthralling watching JR corrupt John Ross, even though part of me wants John Ross to rise above the dirty dealings.

I think Christopher has every right to be LIVID over the selling of the fabulous Southfork ranch and home. I canNOT believe Bobby is doing it. If he doesn't think Jock and Miss Ellie are spinning in their graves, he's nuts.

I'm kinda over Tommy. He's a jerk.

No girl wants to hurt or betray Christopher, do they? I admit there's something sweet and sensitive about him which is really appealing in such a big guy. There's no doubt Christopher is handsome and probably considered the pinaccle of handsomeness by most people, but I'll always be partial to the great hair and hint of intense craziness in the eyes of guys like John Ross [Smile]

WHO SENT THE E-MAIL has been solved already- definitely a benefit of shorter 10-episode seasons... things are moving fast, furious and FUN!

NEEDS MORE SUE ELLEN!!!! Where WAS she tonight??

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Cliff was pretty much the star of the evening, though I dug the faux JR/John Ross fight quite a bit.

Posted by lowercase mllash on :

Awww, I hope everyone didn't stop watching!

Last night saw lots of backstabbery and plotlines kind of come together as we head toward the BBQ, and history tells us that awesome, awful things happen during BBQ episodes!

Sue Ellen was back; I am curious about her falling out with John Ross. Is JR *really* trying to woo her back?!?

Ray and Lucy also appeared briefly in a throwaway scene at the end, as the BBQ began.

I totes missed the rest of this season! It's hard to remember when and what time it's coming on. Plus, for some strange reason, TNT doesn't rerun the new episodes ad nauseum like they do pretty much everything else! WTF?!?!

*sigh* Maybe it'll be On Demand or something....

I found the finale to be absolutely 100 percent satisfyling-- EVERYONE ended up right where they needed to end up.

Fantastic scene for Anne (at her ex's office) and the ending scene between John Ross and JR was even a little chilling.

Sue Ellen's closing speech was a shining moment of triumph for her character, and she remains my sentimental favorite.

Hearty kudos to all involved in relaunching DALLAS for 2012 so successfully!!
