College football teams are wrapping up pre season games and are beginning final preparations for the first game of the season!

So what does that mean to you?

Why...it's time to get ready for the annual LegionWorld College Gameweek Extravaganza!

So, are you ready for another year of picking college football?

Every year I look forward to this thread! I'm so looking forward to this season. Even my wife is excited.

Tomorrow is a pre-Gameday (only an hour). All stocked up for big brunch and beers!

I expect Lady Cobalt to have her own picks this year so we can rub her better record in your face [Big Grin]

Before we get started with this years games it is important to note that there have been some significant changes in the conferences. Four of the conferences enter this year with considerably different memberships: SEC, Big 12, Big East & MWC

Following are looks at the changes in each one.

Posted by Vee on :

This time around, the SEC started the realignment ball rolling by grabbing Texas A&M and (eventually) Missouri from the Big 12. A&M will play in the western division and Missouri is slotted into the east.

The Big 12 responded by plucking West Virginia and TCU from the Big East. (Actually, TCU had agreed to join the Big East, leaving behind the Mountain West, but decided to dump the Big East for the Big 12 before actually joining the Big East! Does it get any crazier?)

 -

Posted by Vee on :

The Big East added Temple to its membership (after booting them out a few years ago!) to replace its loses this year but will see major changes next year. This year they'll look like this.

 -

Posted by Vee on :

And finally the MWC added Boise State, Hawaii and Fresno to replace BYU and TCU (but will also face major changes next year.) For 2012 they will look like this.

This will be fun again this year. Going to try all kinds of odd ways to pick the games this year.

Glad to see you back for another round. Hope the rest of the gang shows up too.

Hey guys. I've (for only the third time since becoming one) used my mad mod skills to pin this thread, but only for the season. [Wink]

I will look forward to being a leader in scoring until the last two weeks, only to falter and coming in second/third, lol.

Vee, great work on the graphics. WV...way to stick out like'ah sore thumb, lol.

They look very good this year! Could be a banner year for the real USC.

(FYI, for Friday games I definitely have Michigan State who never let me down, but have to think about the other game some more).

Here are my picks...

South Carolina (9) @ Vanderbilt - THURS ~ Vandy has been getting better. Last year under new head coach James Franklin they finished 6-7 and have turned a few heads with their recruiting success. But the Gamecocks will still prove too much for them. Vee's pick ~ The real USC

Tennessee @ North Carolina State - FRI ~ Much like Vandy, NC State has quietly been getting better under Coach O'Brien. Many are saying they could easily end up 3-4 in the ACC behind FSU & Va Tech. On the flip side, Tenn seems to be languishing somewhere in the bottom of the pack in the SEC. This could easily be Coach Doley's last year if he doesn't turn things around. The game is being played in the Georgia Dome which should give the Vols a decided advantage in fan support but will that be enough? Vee's pick ~ NC State

Boise State (24) @ Michigan State (13) - FRI ~ One could argue the BSU's Coach Petersen is the best active college football coach. While all the other great coaches have top 10 recruiting classes year after year, Peterson takes unknown, unheralded players and molds them into a fine tuned football machine. Since 2007, he's only seen his time lose 4 games...think about that. Yes they play in the WAC and now the MWC but they've also traveled to Washington, Oregon (16), Oregon (17), Virginia Tech, and Georgia (19) and beaten them all. This year, again, the face a ranked team at the start of the season. Michigan State comes into the game ranked 13. But this is a tremendous Spartans team and Boise will be hard pressed to compensate for the departure of super QB Kellen Moore and some other starters. Either way, this should be one of the don't miss games of this week! Vee's pick ~ The Broncos rarely let me down but I think this game goes to the Spartans in a squeaker.

Notre Dame v Navy (in Dublin, Ireland) - SAT 9:00 am Eastern ~ Who in the world agrees to face Notre Dame in IRELAND during a rebuilding year? Sheesh...talk about bad planning! [Smile] Vee's pick ~ Notre Dame (don't get used to this Cobie!)

Marshall @ West Virginia (11) ~ This could be a fun game since you never really know what to expect from the Thundering Herd. Plus it's an in state rivalry game the first week of the season. Vee's pick ~ Should be an easy win for the Mountaineers of WVU.

Southern Miss @ Nebraska (17) ~ If Larry Fedora hadn't left to take over the HC position at North Carolina, I would be tempted to take Southern Miss as an upset winner over Nebraska. The Huskers better not be looking past Southern Miss to their next game out at UCLA. Vee's pick ~ Nebraska

Miami (FL) @ Boston College ~ Two teams headed in opposite directions. I admire BC's Coach Spaziani but the fact is he's in what may be the hottest HC coaching seat in the country. Over the pat three seasons they've gone from 8-4 in 2009, to 7-5 in 2010 and then 4-8 in 2011. On top of that the Eagles come into the game having lost their top WR, their starting Corner Back, and their best TE for the game. My Hurricanes on the other hand, though still waiting to hear about any pending NCAA sanctions, are loaded with incredible talent including some Freshmen that may start and will see significant playing time. Remember these names...Duke Johnson, Ereck Flowers, Tracy Howard, Tyriq McCord, Malcolm Lewis, Danny Isadora, Deon Bush, Herb Waters (all true freshamn) as well as Mike James, Anthony Chickillo, Philip Dorsett, & Denzel Perryman. You'll be hearing alot about these Baby Canes this weekend and in the coming years. Vee's pick ~ The Canes have a chip on their shoulder and will avenge the loss to the Eagles last year. Canes win.

Clemson (14) @ Auburn ~ Tough call. Everyone is picking Clemson but I can't shake the drubbing they took in the Orange Bowl from WVU last January. Vee's pick ~ Auburn.

Michigan (8) @ Alabama (2) ~ Michigan is tough but I don't think they can come in to Tuscaloosa and take one away from 'Bama. Not yet anyway. Vee's pick ~ Alabama.

Georgia Tech @ Virginia Tech (16) - MON ~ Whenever a team has more than a week to prepare for GT's option game, it seems the Yellow Jackets get shut down. I expect Frank Beamer will have the Hokies well prepared to face the Rambling Wreak. Vee's pick ~ VaTech

Neutral from the POV of location but Tenn is the much more hated team in Atlanta.

NC State

Though I picked USC, I have to say Vandy gave them a run for their money. The Gamecocks got away with a very blatant pass interference call with little time left that allowed them to regain possession and run out the clock. Had the proper call been made, and the ref was RIGHT there!, Vandy had plenty of time left to score and beat USC. The way the Cocks were playing last night I think Vandy had a better than even chance of doing so.

NC State
Spartans

Notre Dame
West Virginia

It wasn't pretty, but Vandy got away with a couple as well.

I'd say that it wasn't the best outting, and USC will drop in the polls. Shaw was more of a running back than a quarterback, and that ain't good, as the two hits showed. He's not big enough and tough enough to keep taking hits like that all season. He's a michael vick without the dog problems.

Posted by Vee on :

Both sides got away with a couple for sure. This one however came at a critical moment ans affected the outcome I think.

For what it's worth, IMO, the way the Gamecocks D played in that second half, I seriously doubt the Commodore offense would have been able to punch it in for six if that drive continued the way it was supposed to. It was clearly the USC D that salvaged that game for them while the offense struggled.

Yeah, I would have preferred that we had seen what happened if the penalty flag had been thrown, but I don't think they would have allowed the forty-some yards still needed unless they let the penalty on 4th and long break their confidence.

And "grats" as well to you and your Canes, Vee! Looks like many of us get to start out the season with our teams on the winning side of things! (Not sure who Dev's team is, though--if it's MSU, grats! If it's the Wolverines.....)

Posted by Dev - Em on :

I tend towards the Spartans. My college (Oakland University) does not field a football team, so I have pretty much adopted MSU. The Wolverines are a proud group...too proud most of the time.

Posted by Dev - Em on :

MSU's QB may not be the best...but when you have a freight train for a running-back, that's alright.

SC didn't move in the polls, and really shouldn't have, except for maybe downward a bit. They won, but were very exposed. Without Shaw, who plays a dangerous run game for a QB, they are in trouble. Their backup was... outclassed.

My picks for the week:

Week 2
Auburn @ Miss State ~ Tough call. Auburn did not impress me that much this past week. They are good but not great. Miss State has been building a solid program. I think Auburn will still be trying to recover from their devastating loss to Clemson. Vee's pick ~ Miss State

Maryland @ Temple ~ Temple is a sleeper and currently may well be the best Div 1 team in Pennsylvania. Maryland still has a long way to go to prove themselves to me. Vee's pick ~ Temple Owls

Miami (FL) @ Kansas State (22) ~ I've been dreading this. Bill Snyder always puts a solid team on the field. Last year, they came down to Miami and beat us in a squeaker. I have concerns about our passing defense at the moment. It just hasn't seemed to gel yet and it could well cost us the game. On the flip side, K State has a solid D Line but is struggling against the pass. If our TEs and WRs step up and make some catches it will open up opportunities for us to run the ball at them as well. If Miami can shut down or seriously impair K State's passing game we win, if not it will be a long afternoon for the Canes. Vee's pick ~ Miami

North Carolina @ Wake Forest ~ UNC looks very good this year. Butch Davis left Larry Fedora a wealth of talent to work with and he has the skill to put it all to good use. Vee's pick ~ UNC

Florida (23) @ Texas A&M ~ This is going to be an interesting game to watch. The Gators are over ranked in my opinion. They are benefiting from past performance in the polls much like a few other teams. They struggled mightily for much of the game last week against Bowling Green and just barely pulled it out at the end at home in the Swamp. Doesn't bode well against an Aggie team playing their first game in the SEC and wanting to make a name for themselves. Vee's pick ~ Texas A&M

Purdue @ Notre Dame ~ Tough call. For the past few years we've been hearing "This is the year Chip Kelly's Irish make it back in to the BCS hunt." Yet they've been a disappointment. Yes, they are coming off a huge win in Dublin, but it was against a very poor team. The Purdue Boilermakers are not slouches and they will give ND a solid run for their money. Vee's pick ~ ND but only because it's at home under the Golden Dome and it really would not surprise me to see it go the other way.

Washington @ LSU (3) ~ Ummmm...does anything need to be said? Vee's pick ~ LSU

Nebraska (17) @ UCLA ~ Jim Mora's UCLA Bruins are a sleeper, under the radar team. No one is paying them any mind and they just may rear up and slap down the Husker's this week if Nebraska isn't paying attention. I think this may be a great game to watch and could be decided at the last minute. Vee's pick ~ I think Nebraska pulls it out in the end after a big scare.

Georgia (6) @ Missouri ~ Georgia is getting a great deal of hype this year with their relatively easy in conference schedule. Many pundits are saying they could win the SEC East. Like Florida (and probably the other SEC teams) they feel confident that the SEC plays on a different level than anyone else. Therefore they, and everyone else, gives Missouri no chance of competing. I think they're in for a big surprise. Vee's pick ~ Missouri

Oklahoma State (19) @ Arizona ~ Rich Rodriguez will turn around Arizona and make them competitive in the Pac-12 and a fun team to watch. But that's not ready to happen yet. OSU is a high powered team and should have little trouble with Arizona. Vee's pick ~ Okie State

Miss State
Maryland
Kansas State
UNC
Texas A&M
Norte Dame
LSU
Nebraska
Georgia
OK State

I agree Georgia might be a little over-ranked right now. Should be a very interesting game, but ultimately the Bulldogs should pull this off.

Florida is way over-ranked too. Of course, I can't talk since I cringe whenever ND gets ranked before they actually prove themselves...which happens basically every year. Maybe this'll be the year they do it.

I'm thinking A&M will definitely have a chip on their shoulder all season, looking to push some people around. I'm def going to be following them curiously.

Cobie 6 of 10 = 60% (Season ~ 14 of 20 = 70%)
Lardy 4 of 10 = 40% (Season ~ 12 of 20 = 60%)
Vee 3 of 10 = 30% (Season ~ 11 of 20 = 55%)
Legiontracker 7 of 10 = 70% (Season ~ 13 of 20 = 65%)

Some comments on yesterdays games:

1) Kansas State v Miami ~ As I feared our defense in general and our secondary in particular wasn't up to the task. Yesterday demonstrated just how far we have to go before we return to the top of the game. Many Miami fans obviously had overly high expectations for a team that lost large percentage of its experienced players last year. This years team is composed of 65 freshman, red shirt freshman, and sophomores (12) and only 20 juniors and seniors. The younguns, or Baby Canes as I call the 65, make up more that half of the starting lineup

Yesterday put their extreme lack of experience on display. It was painful to watch at times, particularly on defense where they were being manhandled by those huge Kansas farmboys. And yet, as bad as the final tally makes it seem, they didn't play poorly, they were simply overmatched. I was very happy to see their positive attitudes and determination. They never gave up and played hard until the final second ticked off the clock. As a fan, you really can't ask for more than that.

It's going to be a long, difficult year for the Baby Canes but they will continue to improve under the tutelage of an incredible coaching staff. I expect them to be much improved by the end of the season. The next few years could be lots of fun with this group once their game experience begins to rival their talent level

2) All of the other games were incredibly fun to watch. As I suspected most were a great deal more competitive than the pundits were expecting. Maryland, Florida, Georgia, & Notre Dame all had hard fought wins. Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Auburn, and North Carolina were all upset. All in all it made for a fun, exciting, and sometimes shocking, weekend of college football.

3) I can't not mention some other truly surprising games. Louisiana - Monroe, an FCS team, upset #8 Arkansas. Utah State beat Utah of the Pac 12, Sacramento State, another FCS team, beat Colorado of the Pac 12, Iowa State beat Iowa, Arizona State beat Illinois, and Oregon State beat Wisconsin. This was really Upset Weekend 2012.

***EDIT ~ I forgot Louisiana Monroe moved up to 1A last year and joined the Sun Belt Conference. Still...as an opponent for #8 Arkansas? Should have bee a breeze for the almighty SEC.

Feels weird picking USC over Stanford. Guess Barkley has to beat them eventually. Wouldn't mind being wrong though, as even post Luck I'm rooting for them.

Also the one game a year where I pick against Michigan State out of loyalty to the Fighting Irish. I generally don't do well when this happen. [Smash]

Hardest one to decide though was AZ State / Mizzou. I went with AZ State because of their defense. But it's a night game at home for Mizzou, which is a huge advantage.

Great day of games so far.

Ohio State / Cal was an exciting, terrific game!

Uconn beat Maryland--happy to see it.

Tennessee had a true heart breaker. I felt they had it...and then it slipped through their fingers.

Meanwhile ND started off as a disaster but they're pulling out a good one. Just need to hang on here.

Likewise, Stanford is stepping up at the same time and sipping a lot people. I picked USC but I'd like to see them do it.

Some good games this weekend and some surprising results as well. Georgia Tech absolutely manhandled a really good Virginia team; Pitt ran over #13 VaTech; after beating Arkansas last week in an overtime shoot out, Louisiana Monroe forced Auburn into overtime as well but lost on a missed field goal; North Carolina was down 36-7 at the half but came storming back only to lose 39-34; Western Kentucky out of the Sunbelt Conf beat Kentucky (btw LA-Monroe is also a Sunbelt team); and the pre-season consensus National Championship contender Southern California lost Stanford.

On a side note, I've always had a fondness for teams with unique nicknames like the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana Lafayette. Some others I really enjoy are:

UAB (Alabama Birmingham) Blazers
Alaska Anchorage Seawolves (what's a seawolf? [Smile] )
Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks
SUNY Albany Great Danes
Boston University Terriers
Cal State Northridge Matadores
Carnegie Mellon Tartans
Central Missouri Mules (lol)
Chaminade Silverswords
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
Dayton Flyers
Erskine College Flying Fleet
Franklin & Marshall Diplomats
Furman Paladins
Georgetown Hoyas
Idaho Vandals
Marshall Thundering Herd
Maryland Terrapins
Missouri-KC Kangaroos
University of New England, Maine Nor'easters
Pepperdine University Waves
Pittsburg State University (Kansas) Gorillas
Ramapo Roadrunners
Richmond Spiders
Saint Louis University Billikens
University of San Diego Toreros
Southern Illinois University Carbondale Salukis
Tufts University Jumbos
UC Irvine Anteaters
UC San Diego Tritons
UC Santa Barbara Gauchos
Valparaiso University Crusaders

and I think my two favorites of all...
Delaware Blue Hens and
Akron Zips

Of course, there are plenty of others but these are schools or teams I've had contact with in one way or another and have always enjoyed the uniqueness of their names.

PS: As I was putting the list together I noticed that many of them are from the Carolinas and California. It seems schools in those states take more interest in finding something new and original when naming themselves as opposed to sharing a nickname with dozens of other schools. Props to them for making college sports so interesting and varied.

Little surprised that Stanford didn't rank higher after taking down the Trojans. I was rooting for Southern Cal, however, because I wanted to see a legitimate non-SEC power oppose the eventual SEC representative (most like 'Bama again) in the championship game. They can still climb back into it after an early season loss, but I most definitely hope we don't get another all-SEC finale. [No]

Scary to see Clemson ranked so high. We haven't really proven anything to this point, after all. We'll certainly know more after this Saturday's game, I suppose.

And Va. Tech booted out of both polls? Voters obviously have little respect for ACC teams with losses already. Can't say as I blame them too much.

And how about Florida? Looks like they may just be on their way back.

Week 4
Baylor @ Louisiana Monroe ~ FRI - Louisiana Monroe has been the surprise team of the season, beating Arkansans and almost beating Auburn in OT. But they won't catch Baylor by surprise. The game is in Monroe which will give the Warhawks a distinct shot and I expect a high scoring game which should be fun to watch. Vee's pick ~ Baylor

Virginia @ TCU- TCU isn't looking as awesome as the have the past few years but they're still a great team. Virginia has also seemed a bit off their norm. Given that the game is at home for the Horned Frogs, I think they take it fairly easily. Vee's pick ~ TCU

Temple @ Penn State- Penn State has had a living nightmare to fight through. They've lost to Ohio University, Virginia, and beat Navy this past weekend for their first win of the year. Most pundits are picking them to win by 7 over a Temple team that doesn't get the credit it deserves. The game is at State College so you know the stadium will be packed with the faithful. Vee's pick ~ I think Temple pulls this one out in the upset special of the week.

Missouri @ South Carolina ~ Were this game in Missouri I would ponder longer but it's in Columbia. Vee's pick ~ The real USC

California @ USC ~ USC lost to Stanford last week. As much as I dislike Lane Kiffen, he knows how to prepare a team and will not lose two in a row. Vee's pick ~ The other USC

Rutgers @ Arkansas ~ Man what an intriguing game. Most years I would say Rutgers didn't stand a chance of beating the Razorbacks at Arkansas...but this isn't most years. The turmoil and distractions for the team in Fayetteville continue to mount. Vee's pick ~ Rutgers

Michigan @ Notre Dame ~ Just to be clear, I'm not picking ND because I think they're ready to return to the top of the rankings. I do think Kelly finally has traction and the Irish will continue to improve. I'm also not picking them to win because they're coming off a victory against highly ranked Michigan State last Saturday. Most especially I'm not picking ND because its Cobie's team [Big Grin] Vee's pick ~ ND 0_0 because they are playing Michigan at home and Michigan is an underwhelming 2-1. The 1 is a blowout against 'Bama but the 2 wins were against UMass and Air Force and they weren't that impressive at either.

Kansas State @ Oklahoma ~ Should be a fun game to watch. K-State continues to improve and is having a great year but this is Oklahoma. Vee's pick ~ Oklahoma

Clemson @ Florida State ~ This could be a wild, high scoring game. Certainly it will be one of the top games to watch this weekend. Everyone says the Seminoles are finally back this year. Of course, they said that last year, the the year before that. Honestly, I do think they are a legitimate top tier team...but so is Clemson. Vee's pick ~ Clemson. I don't know what Dabo is feeding them but that team sure plays well.

Arizona @ Oregon ~ The past few weeks I've been touting Arizona as a much improved team and one that the Pac 12 needs to watch out for. Arizona beat 18th ranked Oklahoma State two weeks ago but their other 2 games were fodder. On the flip side, Oregon hasn't played a single worthy opponent so far this year. Closest would be a very talented Fresno State team. Vee's pick ~ Oregon Haberdashery

What? No comment about the move by Notre Dame to the ACC from the Big East?

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

Well, its not really a big move, football is moderate, and not really in the Conference much, the "lesser sports" aren't really the big talk generators... Plus, Atlantic Coast...Notre Dame ... not really a great fit. Both kinda suck lately. [Wink]

ND joining the ACC isnt a huge deal to me because as usual...they get to have it both ways. As football, they remain independent. I know that drives some people nuts but as a fan, I love it. [Big Grin]

I wish Uconn would join the ACC. There's some talk. They're not there yet football wise but as a basketball school they are second to none and can stand right beside Duke as a premier program. And in other sports theyre not shabby either, winning several other National Championships.

Wow! Louisiana Monroe is even more impressive whe you watch them live. They've been 2 QBs in the backfield, one lefty One righty, and its driving Baylor ceazy

Man! I did get to watch it and it was exactly what you said "wild & wooly" We went up 19-0. GT then stormed back in the 2nd & 3rd Q to lead 36-19. Late 3rd and throughout the 4th we battled back and finally tied it up at 36-36 with 5 secs left. (We had missed a 22 yd FG in the 4th, only the first missed FG by senior Kicker Jake Wieclaw this year and third in his entire college career!)

In OT GA Tech got the ball first and got down to the 1 yd line with a 1st & 10. My Baby Canes cinched up their belts and turned them away from the end zone for 4 nerve wracking plays.

We took over and closed it out with a touch down on our third play.

What a great game! We still made lots of mistakes, which I would expect from such a young team. But the resilience, determination, and energy with which they played tonight was great to watch. My Canes turned a corner tonight. They will still have a tough year ahead of them but now they know just how good they can be.

Proud...to be... a Miami Hurricane!

Why the sad face?

You picked ND...

Look like Clemson lost a heartbreaker. I didn't see it but from checking the score continually it looked like a nail biter.

Meanwhile, Oregon KILLED Arizona! Didn't see that one either--what happened? I knew the Ducks were for real but did Arizona just simply stink up the field.

Regarding the ND game, I'll take it. With the quarterback issue an ongoing concern this season, sloppy wins are still wins, provided he gets better every game. The defense looked fantastic though. ND isn't on par with the mega powerhouse teams of the SEC, but I think they can hold their own against anyone in the Big 10 or ACC. The big question mark is how will they do against USC.

These polls always drive me crazy. There is never any rhyme nor reason to them.

For example, how do you justify dropping Clemson from 10 to 17 when they lost to a higher ranked team (Florida State was #4 and the game was @ Florida state) and yet you only drop Oklahoma (who was #6 yet lost to #15 Kansas State at home) from #6 to #16? To me it seems as if OK should have dropped much lower or Clemson much less so.

Also, how do you justify dropping LSU only one spot (from #2 to 3) when they just barely beat unranked Auburn by 2 points, and not move Florida State up from #4 when they beat 10th ranked Clemson? I would have dropped LSU below FSU, Georgia, South Carolina AND K State, who are all at the same 4-0 record as LSU but had quality wins.

Texas actually really impressed me and showed some real character. Meanwhile, West Virginia racked up more points than seems plausible but also totally phoned it in defensively. I'll think about these for a few more days but my initial thought is Texas exposes WV in a big way.

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

I only got to see the last half of the South Carolina game yesterday...It was freakin great, would have been a lot better if it hand't been so necessary to have a 28-0 run over a team you should have wiped the first quarter, much less the second half. But...

Gettin mah groove back, lol.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

I was happy to see Clemson get by BC yesterday. BC always gives Clemson a hard time and especially at BC's home field. It was gut-check as they could've let the wheels come off after last week's disappointment.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Yea, I didn't see it but Clemson also showed a lot of character. They're for real this year!

Ohio State / Michigan State was a good game too. Both teams were very evenly matched--played great in places, made mistakes in others.

And how about Penn State? Who would have thought they'd turn things around like this. Their coach deserves a man of the year award if it continues. I'd really like to see them have a winning season and make a bowl game.

I should mention that Clemson's win was without star receiver Sammy Watkins! We're actually 3-0 without him.

Okay, to be perfectly honest I believe my Baby Canes will likely lose to Notre Dame though I believe they certainly have the ability to win. If it were later in the season and the defense had a few more games under their belt I'd feel much better about it.

Me too, plus they are believing the media hype on them. Just don't think Texas is the team that can do it. Lots of others think Texas can, so we will find out!

Cobie, if you start hearing screams, and moans, and other odd sounds tomorrow night, don't worry. That will just be me yelling at the TV and loving every minute of it.

Congrats to Lardy, Rick & Cobie. Your teams had strong wins today.

ND handed my Canes their heads on a platter. No question they were the better team. After our first possession and the 2 dropped TD passes as well as the running TD called back by a holding call, Miami seemed to lose all focus.

Outcome was never in doubt after that. Sad part is we actually were playing well at that point and had ND back on their heels.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda [No]

Some other wild games today as well, LSU loses to The Gators, Arkansas beats Auburn, Texas almost takes down WVU, UNC beats up on VATech....wow!

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

NUMBER 3 BAY BEEEEEE!

That was one helluva game last night. That 7 Georgia had... nothing. Gamecocks sent in the 3rd string D. I have never seen such an explosive game from the Cocks, and I've seen quite a few. Lordy lordy lordy.

DAMN!

I didn't get to see much of yesterday, spent all day at the new house working on it and my mom's birthday present. But... I made SURE i got home in time for the game. And despite my football buddy, my Stepfather in law, passing two weeks ago, and the house being full of ladies and my six year old, Sam... it was a great day.

As well, Clemson won handily. Great day for South Carolina teams in football.

OMG, did any of you see the injury Marcus Lattimore at South Carolina sustained. By far one of the worst I've seen in a game.

I pray its not as bad as it seems and that he is able to fully recover.

Good news is he only dislocated and hyperextended the knee. Done for the season but plenty of others have come back from that injury to have good careers. And trust me, I know about knees. [Wink]

Posted by Dev - Em on :

I do too. It looked worse than that on the replay. his leg really flopped around for a minute and did not look natural laying there.

Glad it's only hyperextended.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Hm. Guy on the radio today said Lattimore might miss 2013, too. Was he misinformed?

Posted by Dev - Em on :

Not necessarily. He could be done as well really. Depending how bad it truly is.

Add to his injury to the other knee, it's not out of the realm of possibility that he could be done. It'll be a long road back.

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

Oh yeah, it easily could. but it could go the other way as well. Odds are, if he does finish his career at USC (which he could, never been redshirted before), he probably wouldn't be a high pick for the NFL.

Posted by Vee on :

There's definitely a big difference in the reporting today on the severity of his injury than yesterday. Yesterday reports were that he had a fractured femur and patela and ruptured ACL, MCL, RCL & LCL. In essence everything that held the knee together was blown out and the only thing holding his knee together was the skin over it. That would have most likely been a career ending injury.

Don't know where that info came from as specific as it was. By today the reports had changed to a dislocated and hyper-extended knee which is quite different. With the proper care he would likely be back for spring training, if this is accurate.

Posted by Blockade Boy on :

dislocated? there's a doctor with a sense of understatement. That knee was dislocated to jersey.

Since McGahee came back, I pretty much believe anything is possible. Best wishes for the young man.

The ND game was a nail biter and phenomenal game. They showed that they have a lot of heart--being able to come back from being backed into a corner is critical to being successful. And their defense proved once again they are among the best in football.

I can't believe they're undefeated. If 'Bama or K-state (or the Ducks) lose, ND is actually that much closer to a Championship game! I'm actually believing it can happen!!!

Hey, for not knowing what's been going on the last three weeks, not to shabby for me.

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Wow - congrats on the good week Vee!

The Wisconsin fumble in the Ohio State/Wisconsin game was a heartbreaker and really funny!

Here are the games to consider for the coming week...

Week 13
Rutgers @ Pitt
Michigan @ Ohio State
Georgia Tech@ Georgia
Texas Tech @ Baylor
Oregon @ Oregon State
Stanford @ UCLA
Florida @ Florida State
Oklahoma State @ Oklahoma
South Carolina @ Clemson
Notre Dame @ USC

***Please note: With the announcement earlier today the Miami will self-impose a post season ban, the Miami-Duke game becomes meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Therefore, since no one has posted picks yet I have swapped it out for the Rutgers - Pitt game which could finalize the Big East championship (of course, its between two schools that won't be in the Big East after this year apparently! [shrug] )

Well, this is it. Can ND do it? For me, this has been the near season of college football I've ever experienced. I can't for this game!

Also, I'm feeling pretty good about the Seminoles knocking off the Gators to make things a little easier in determining the SEC championship and National Championship. I also figure 'Bama beating Georgia in said SEC Championship. So...can my Fighting Irish ensure their place against 'Bama? Or will it be the Ducks--who I feel are definitely good enough to beat 'Bama? Can't wait to see.

Hey! No stuffing the ballot box.

Just because you didn't vote last week doesn't mean you can have two sets of picks this week Rick!

This not NOT Florida! Well, it is but...

(I'm going to assume you want me to go with the latter set of picks unless I hear otherwise from you.)

Sorry vee, didn't realize I had done it. Yes, please, discount the first and go with the latter.

And here we go with the results for the final week of the regular season...

Cobie 7 of 10 = 70% (Season ~ 94 of 140 = 67%)
Lardy 8 of 10 = 80% (Season ~ 90 of 140 = 64%)
Vee 7 of 10 = 70% (Season ~ 88 of 140 = 63%)
Legiontracker 4 of 10 = 40% (Season ~ 82 of 140) = 59%)
Rick 8 of 10 = 60% (Season ~ 77 of 120 = 64%)
Dev-Em 6 of 10 = 60% (Season ~ 76 of 140 = 54%)

Vee - 4th Place
Legiontracker - 5th Place
Dev-Em - 6th Place

Grats to Cobie.

Alright! All these years and I finally win the college football thread! And ND goes undefeated!

(Come to think of it--they're probably related since I never pick against ND no matter what.)

Thanks Vee for a great season! Now don't go AWOL from LW for months until the next season. [Razz]

Looking forward to the bonus bowl game round.

Well...last place again. Noo problem with that, as I still hot over 50%. not bad. Maybe one of these years I will pay attention to more than just a handful of teams (but I doubt it.)

congrats to Cobie.

Going to do three groups for the post season bowl games. First group picks are due Dec 15th; second group picks are due Dec 27th; and third group picks are due Dec 31. However I'm going to post all of them today so you have plenty of time to consider and get them posted in case you are traveling for the Holidays. Let me know if you have any trouble reading this image.

Here's Group 2, due Dec 27th --

Please note, I caught a typo on here today as I was working on my picks. Oregon State plays Texas, not Texas Tech on the 29th. I edited it to reflect the correct pairings!

And here is Group 3, due on Dec 31 (or sooner of course...sooner is better [Smile] )

As Lardy pointed out, there is another typo on this sheet. Capital One Bowl is Georgia v Nebraska NOT Georgia Tech. Sorry guys!

1st, Thanks Vee for another great year. 2nd, Congrats Cobster. Good job. The rest of us gotta step up our game.

When I get more than five minutes, I'll look at the bowl stuff, Vee.

Tommy Tuberville to Cinci, didn't see that coming but glad because we were worried we were going to be the next MAC team to lose a coach. Toledo's was a prominent mention. Two former MAC coaches will be contending the NC this year.

Our local conference is the MAC, so we're pretty happy with the bowl season. Toledo plays on the smurf turf against a tough Utah St. NIU in the Orange Bowl! Wow.

Finally,

Go ARMY!

...THE FIGHTIN' IRISH!!!

Man, I can't wait for the National Championship! Does it seem impossible for ND to win? Sure! But I love sports because I love watching the impossible happen.

Plus, the two teams that single-handily made my wife a college football fan, the Oregon Ducks and the Stanford Cardinal, both have great games too. I refer to them as "her" teams kind of tongue in cheek, and she refers to certain teams as "my" teams too (Oklahoma, Alabama) even though I'm clearly an ND / Uconn fan.

I missed Gameday already.

Grats to the Clemson Tigers...and without Sammy Watkins no less!

And also to the GA Tech for taking out Southern Cal. The ACC isn't doing badly at all.

I'm ashamed I picked against us, but nobody gave Clemson a chance! When I saw that bowl game announced, I was, like, "oh....shit". The x-factor was Clemson's D, which had been nonexistent all year long. WHO saw them stepping up like THAT?!?!?

Great Game, Lardy. Now's the chicken test today.
