In the first season, they had 60's, 70's and 80's nights. Kelly Clarkson always did a great job. She had a fair mix of ballads and more rockin' numbers.

Last season, they didn't so much have the same decade style themes, but they did have a disco night and a Motown night, etc. Ruben always did a great job.

Song selection is a HUGE factor in how well the singer does on this show. The best contestants are the ones who pick the best songs. Kelly and Ruben always did crowd pleasers which worked for their voices. Justin Guarini was good at that, too. Clay did good versions of the songs he picked, but was always criticized as being too "Broadway."

This season, I feel like Fantasia has it down. She can do upbeat and funky or controlled and mellow. I'm liking her more than LaToya right now.

There's a website..
www.idolfan.org
...which has links to the most recent AI performances. I just looked at the movie night stuff. Oh yea, all this fuss about Fantasia's song was right! She's a STAR! LaToya was great too.

I'd like to hear another Billy Joel night. I'm sorry but I've already told Caroline there is no way I'm watching a Barry Manilow night. I'll go work in the garage or basement while she and her mom watch.

It seems to me last year they had more artist themed nights rather than decades or music style. But I do wish they'd do an Eagles or maybe even a Nirvana. Lets mix it up a little! I'm just tired of the same old, same old.

At least the country night showed talent from Amy, one of the ones who didn't shine on another night. Too bad she was voted out the very next week. If they keep gearing the music towards the ones who keep wowing us we really don't get to see everyone's potential.

I really wish I'd seen the first 2 seasons!

Scott, I agree with you about the theme nights... also, I think that-- early on-- there should have been a "no theme" night and let the kids pick what they wanted to sing, whatever genre, as they did in the rounds when they were voted into the top 12.

I myself am not looking forward to Barry Manilow night but I'm sure not gonna miss it!

Let's have Rock week!

The Season 3 cd goes on sale April 27; It's going to be the kids singing soul numbers, I think-- I'm gonna get it. I just feel soft-hearted for these kids. I can understand how life-long fans of these kids are made from this show.

They were playing snippets from William Hung's cd "INSPIRATION" on the radio yesterday... It wasn't very inspiring but it WAS hilarious. You haven't lived until you've heard his titter-inducing terrible rendition of HOTEL CALIFORNIA.

The DJ also said the album has sold 40,000 copies since its recent release...

Seriously, if he plays his cards right, he could be a new kind of "Weird Al" only he does ACTUAL covers of his songs, not parodies...

actually, they probably DO count as parodies....

I hope someone has told ol Will Hung that he's being mocked. Poor kid. Still, he's getting laughed at all the way to the bank!

Well, I certainly did enjoy tonight's Barry Manilow episode 1000 times more than I thought I would!

Enough chitchat-- here's my rundown from best to NOT the best!

1. JENNIFER; As far as I'm concerned, the best of the Divas Three. Loved her since she sang "Imagine". I think she can sing anything well!

2. JASMINE; Loved her version of 'I Know I'll Never Love This Way Again'. Loved the little personal flair she put on it.

3. DIANA; Not familiar with her song choice, but whatever it was, she NAILED it.

4. FANTASIA; Not a real melodic performance, but no one can deny her infectious energy.

5. LATOYA; Not familiar with this number; she seemed to do it exceptionally well, but... does anyone care?

6. JOHN S; Though the ending fell flat, carrot-top's 'Mandy' was pretty good most of the way through. ps/ I knew he would sing this!

7. GEORGE; Oh dear. 2 weeks in a row of the weakest performance in the show. This week it could start to affect him. Kinda sad to see the ONE performer who steadily improved every week now start to slide downhill.

So who's out this week? It's anything goes from here on in!

Last night's show made me realize I don't know many Barry Manilow songs. I rarely have fun listening to ballads, which dominated last night's show. Let's see a dance/pop song night fer pete's sake!

Latoya, Jennifer, and Fantasia are all pretty good at different things but I still want Jasmine to crack the top three.

I guess it goes without saying that my feelings are really hurt after tonight.

*sigh*

Jennifer did something that none of the other remaining singers did for me-- the songs she sang would stay in my head for days afterward. It happened with 'Imagine', it happened with 'I Believe In You and Me' and it happened with last night's 'Weekend in New England'.

I will miss her very much.

I still think she is a better interpreter of song than either Latoya or Fantasia.

This just proves that all kinds of voting in America are screwed up. How in the hell can that little red-headed *bleep* be in the top 6? If he makes it past next week then I have lost all faith in the voting process.

YAY! My two fallen Idol-angels Camile & Jennifer are covering GREAT tunes on the upcoming cd....

Camile's doing "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" and Jen's covering "Neither One of Us (Wants to be the First to Say Goodbye)"!

That's the yahoo group. If you go to the links section, you'll find the files. Also, that idolfan.org website is good for listening to or watching recent performances.

I was actually looking forward to the Barry Manilow show. Even though he is quite awkward to watch, I love that kind of music! I thought all the Idols did a great job except for the guys. I agree with Simon that George made a mess of his song. I also agree with Simon that John is not a very strong singer. ALL the girls gave great performances. I actually thought Jasmine's was the least interesting. The three divas were...divine!

I was absolutely stunned that they (Jennifer, LaToya and Fantasia) were in the bottom 3. Stunned! I couldn't believe Jennifer was eliminated. I have no idea what the voters are doing. Totally don't get it.

Its all about how many times they are voting and for who. After this they really need to look at limiting the number of votes allowed by a phone or instant message. I know of, or knew of, groups of people around here (in Utah) that organized phone chains last year for Carmen Rasmusen. You get a group of 10 or more people with cell phones and land lines and they can vote literally thousands of times in that two hour period given for voting.

To me, seeing Jennifer voted off and the three best performers from the past weeks in the bottom three, it means that their people got over-confident and didn't think their votes counted. That mistake cost Jennifer her chance. At least for now. I'm sure she'll get some kind of offer down the line.

I kinda suspected that that something was wrong when Seacrest didn't say specifically which group George should join.

I agree with you, I think voters thought the Latoya, Jennifer, and Fantasia were already locked in to the final four so they wanted to vote for they wanted in that fourth position.

My other theory is that those three keep splitting the votes amongst their biggest fans while Jasmine now has more of the Hawaaiian fan votes and John has the other JPL's votes added in.

XXXs, Dean! I joined the group! Enjoyed hearing Camile do "Son of A Preacher Man' and "Desperado' again!

Also loved hearing Jennifer's "Weekend in New England' again, but why doesn't anyone have her "Imagine'...?

I'm sure there will be Jennifer Hudson tribute sites or groups that will have all her stuff, eventually.

I've heard some other interesting theories about voting for Idol... one is the anti-Diva sentiment. People seem to think that we have enough of that type out there already and are looking for a different kind to win. Also, there are those who like to vote against what the judges say. I have to admit that this must be a minority of voters, though. I'm more inclined to think it's like Scott says...

Okay, so we had the music of Gloria Estefan tonight... I think it's been proven that Latin music MUST be the most difficult style to sing well! Makes me appreciate Gloria all the more!

In order of performance:

FANTASIA did a high-energy, low-melody performance of GET ON YOUR FEET.

GEORGE bounced around a lot to I LIVE FOR LOVING YOU.

LATOYA did a pretty good version of RHYTHM IS GONNA GET YOU.

JOHN did an okay job to some dull N'Sync/Gloria collaboration.

JASMINE did a sweet version of HERE WE ARE.

DIANA was all a-go-go with TURN THE BEAT AROUND.

My picks:

Top 3: Diana, Jasmine, Latoya

Bottom 3: Fantasia, George, John

But at this point, who knows WHAT will happen.

This is the last chance this show has to kick John off. If he is still standing after tomorrow night I'll find something else to watch on Tuesdays.
