I read somewhere that they intend on letting the viewers get to know the contestants better this season, and it would seem that they've started with the auditions. I do hope the girl with the adorable daughter with the medical condition and the super supportive family does well. Also, the football playing girl who got the group hug was so cute! A couple of hotties were really hot and the Star Wars dork girl was quite a character. She could use some anger management classes, though.

It was a very entertaining show. Plenty of the usual. I still think there are too many weeks of auditions, but their formula works so I'll be patient as I wait for the real competition to start.

I was glad they seemed to be concentrating more on the better singers last night. Usually it's about 80% bad auditions/20% good. Last night's ratio seemed much better.

I thought the Grace Slick-sounding chick sang great (and I liked her artwork) but she blew it by going totally nutso.

This year I'm predicting which castoffs from the auditions will be brought back and featured on the big finale in May.

Last night's most likely:

Temptress Brown (group hug girl)

Alexis/Nutty Grace Slick Chick

Star Wars Dork Girl

I liked everyone I saw who passed through well enough.

Just when I'd given up hope for any original compositions tonight (like last night's awful "No Sex Allowed" and the potentially hilarious "Stalk Her"), the final contestant gave us "Brothers Forever". By the 7th or 8th repeat, I was getting into it. Its now ingrained into my psyche. Dude is definite material for the finale in May. He was so polite and sweet too.

Both boys from Mississippi were HAWT. Riiiiiiiiilly SUPER-hawt. I could even deal with the first dude's fingernail collection, if pressed.

*contented sigh* I've missed AI!

I accidentally tuned in for a minute the other day.

They were auditioning; the guy was awful, I mean AWFUL, and 2/3 of the judges were cracking up he was so bad.

I truly think the selection people must have deliberately encouraged bad talent to come forward for the amusement factor. I truly wish I could believe the person was an actor playing an awful singer, not a genuine awful singer with dreams greater than his talents being chewed up solely as a gag.

Either way, I feel quite justified in never watching the show again. No offense to its fans.

Not sure if anyone still watches this show... but for those who saw tonight's San Diego auditions I have some exciting news - a friend of mine was one of the ones who made it through!

His name is Michael Lee (going by Michael Lee Johns on this show though) and he is the Australian guy who sang the Otis Redding song!

Here's hoping that this season's 'Legion World representative' lasts at least as long as the last one (Kid Prime's cousin Diana Degarmo) did!

Blacula,
I just want you to know that I'm a BIG fan of Otis Redding. I LOVE his work. Your friend did a VERY good job with the song, I was impressed. I'm always happy to support the Aussies because I spent two years of my life in Australia as a child. Also, I'm sure many people will find your friend to be a hottie, so that should surely help him. Give him a choc-o-block of good wishes!

If I'm not mistaken, there should be a lot of really cute blonde girls in the Hollywood rounds. Personally, I'm happy with that!

Hey Sketchy - I am a *HUGE* Otis Redding fan too! So much so that if I ever had a son - he'd be named Otis!

I always find it incredible that he was only 26 at the time of his death and yet he left such an amazing body of work behind him. It's tragic to think about what more he would've given to music had he lived.

And I thought Michael did a great version of his song too. As Randy said he did kinda make it his own, while at the same time leaving intact so much of what makes Redding's original so classic. That's not easy to do.

As usual, the auditions are pretty entertaining, but I really prefer getting into the real competition and performances.

We're a few days late as usual (the audition rounds have been Thursday/Friday night the week they go out in the US so I think the rest of the run will all be on Friday nights) and I missed a lot of the early auditions but there are some interesting people this year. They seem to have put a lot more people through that aren't just mainstream pop-bunnies, although that doesn;t mean they'll get beyond the Hollywood rounds.

Couple of people really stood out for me. There was the boy who said his mother wanted to raise a homecoming queen and was just disappointed it wasn't one of her daughters. We liked him. We also really liked the girl whose father had died a couple of days before the audition. She had a lovely voice. The two huge black girls who auditioned together (one liked Simon and one liked Randy) were also a big surprise in just how good they were. Oh, and we liked the blonde girl who came on and Paula asked to go away and learn a Dolly Parton song. Paula was absolutely right in asking her to do that since she had something about her that we liked a lot.

I read somewhere before this season began that there'd be more of an emphasis on getting to know the contestants instead of a bunch of guest celebrity judges and so on. I can totally feel that. I'm going to miss some of the people they've highlighted throughout the audition rounds. (Not naming names yet.)

So, as I've said, I look forward to this season. I think some very good talent has made it and I think there are a lot of singers who I have no idea what they're like. I love Tuesday nights!

Well, this season's top 12 guys might be the most doable ever, even without Drew and homeless lad making it (I was devestated, BTW)! I am, like, TOTALLY in love with Colton, Michael Lee Johns, hippie blonde rocker guy, dreadlocks, knocked-up girlfriend guy, the sissy, that Lief Garrett-looking kid and especially that dark-haired 16 year old sweet, polite kid. I would totally make him my child bride. He is PRECIOUS, every time I see him I giggle with glee. He makes me want to give him money and stuff.

And the lasses! LOVE me some Asia, the plus-model girl, Carly, the Rouge-haired nurse Janis Joplin soul-rock chick (WHEW!!), and the blonde chick they compared to Carly Simon (NOT kristy Lee Cook, whom I am as yet unsure can sing anything other than "Amazing Grace").

AI makes me actually look forard to Monday because I know Tuesday is coming next.

I'm really not sure about Janis Joplin II. She's got soemthing about her btu I'm not convinced that she's anything other than a decent singer who would work better as a Janis Joplin tribute act than as a solo artist in her own right.

The contestants' profile page is done!
http://www.americanidol.com/contestants/season7/
I find it helpful, because I can never remember many names.

Hey Lash, the Leif Garrett looking kid is named Garret Haley, so I know I'll totally be calling him Leif Garrett Haley.

Janice Joplin Junior is named Amanda Overmyer...Amando?

Looking forward to Tuesday!!!

I'm rooting for Ramielle Malubay (little girl with BIG voice - maybe she can be Shrinking Violet?) myself. I admit I may be a bit biased, since she's Filipina, but so far she's shown she can sing,so I don't care. so Oh, and Brooke White and Carly, and Joanne the plus-sized model. They're all great. And I wanna hear more of Amanda the rock nurse.

Also Alexandrea, whose audition we saw before she was totally forgotten during Hollywood, only to resurface as one of the Top 24.

I just find it so unfair that there are a bunch of people in the Top 24 who have had such little screen time. They should have at least shown us clips of 'em singing during the last episode!

Josiah and his song choice of "Grace Kelly" got a blip on yahoo! as having the highest searches of all American Idol info. Interesting. I agree that he is really talented, but he really blew it when he didn't work with the band and then did that weird "Stand By Me" audition. Oh well, he's young. He'll figure it out.

IB, I can't feel too sorry for those who made it to the top 24. I mean, yeah, maybe others (like Josiah) got more screen time, but they're gone now!

I've got two yummy favorites who can actually sing. Brooke White (the curly blonde folksy girl) and Michael Johns (the Aussie). If they perform as well during the competition as well as they have so far, I'd love them to be the final two.

Josiah sucked. His cocky attitude and not brilliant voice didn't endear him to me at all.

Alexandrea Lushington needs to do well just because of her rather fabulous name. I don;t really remember if she's any good as a singer but that name rocks.

Michael Johns I like a lot and the Irish girl is fabulous. It would amuse me hugely if the final two of American Idol happened to not be Americans.

A pretty good bunch this year actually. There are the usual pretty but slightly dull girls in there but the girls that do have somethign about them are pretty darn good. I love Syesha as well and Brooke has soemthing about here that I like a lot. The boys don't grab me so much for the most part but there's no-one this year that I have an instant dislike for. Could be an interesting year...

Haven't been able to get into the show this year (competing against the Biggest Loser which I'm watching for inspiration). But I think the Irish girl, Carly Smithson, should be disqualified immediately. She's already had a major record contract with MCA and had an album released. This contest is supposed to be for undiscovered talent, not talent that bombed out of their first recording contract (her album sold only 400 units in three months). The Wall Street Journal even did an article based on her in 2002 because of her spectacular flop.
