I've never understood the adulation given to Chris Claremont for those early years of X-Men. Yes, they were good. They weren't *that* good.

To be fair, Claremont did craft some classic stories, especially during the Byrne-Austin era nod

I thought the Machine Man limited series was better than the Wolverine one.

I never read anything from Warren Ellis I've liked. Ultimate Extinction actually ain't bad. I don't know what is so genius about Authority. I get it but i'm like "yeah so?"

Grant Morrisson is hit or miss with me. I do think half of his work IS genius and the rest is "yeah so?". But right now he's on my good side. smile

I also liked many under the radar titles in the 90's.

Outdoor Miner, you notice all the "great" runs had great artists! wink In other words Cockrum and Byrne helped alot. Though my favorite stuff is probably Paul Smith and JRJR with Claremont. But that Byrne/Claremont stuff had basically raw dynamic energy. It's like film makers. Their early stuff isn't technically as good as their later work...but the early stuff had so much more enthusiasm, energy...that it doesn't compare, etc.

I am rambling. I shall stop now.

All right, I liked X-Cutioner's too. It had all my favorite boys and the evil that is Cable died. What's not to like?

Yay! I'm so glad to find out I'm not the only one who likes X-Cutioner's Song. laugh

Cali, from one McKone fangirl to another, I have a recommendation, unless you've already read it: L.E.G.I.O.N. Annual # 2 (1991). It's one of his earliest art jobs, and yet it's almost as good as his work today. Plus I think Alan Grant's script is great. One warning: it's kinda gross.

Here's one I've debated in my head for a long time on whether to post, but here goes:

I like the Levitz/Lightle and Levitz/La Rocque LSH Eras better than the Levitz/Giffen Era.

Quite honestly, I've never understood what's supposed to be so great about Levitz/Giffen. Even Great Darkness didn't really impress me. I don't think Giffen's early LSH art was that much better than his later LSH art. It was cleaner and less confusing, yes, but I didn't think it was that much better. And yes, Giffen had some interesting futuristic architecture and machinery, but I prefer Cockrum/Grell's visions of the future to Giffen's.

And I hated the way Shadow Lass looked with short hair. After Giffen left, she grew her hair long again and I think that's how it should always be (I think Kitson's current shoulder-length haired Shady looks okay.)

I think after Giffen left, Levitz's stories got better, and the art got better. I wish Giffen hadn't come back for Levitz's last few issues.

LSH with Giffen in charge? I've only read one issue and didn't like it, so I can't make a strong case about it.

L.E.G.I.O.N., as I said in the earliest posts I made here on LW, got much better after Giffen left and Alan Grant took over the plotting, IMO.

I collect titles because of characters more than stories and art.

I liked Grant Morrison's X-Men. I loved Grant Morrison's JLA.

I liked 'Proty is actually Garth!'

I secretly hope that comic book fans on the internet have little to no power or say in what happens to comics.

I think Batman is better than 95% of DC's heroes and don't care if anyone thinks differently.

I've had crushes on the following in my youth: Tinya Wazzo, Alanna, Mera, Kitty Pryde, Rogue and Crystal. My biggest crush of all time was Gwen Stacey when I was around 12.

I think Brian Bendis is a phenominal writer with a bad comic book rap. I think Warren Ellis is very overated. I think Judd Winnick is borderline terrible.

I was too young to vote for Jason Todd to die--but even now if I could, I'd vote the Joker kill him.

I secretly feel like I can never enjoy the Legion completely unless its the original continuity. I've tried to get passed it for years, but just can't shake it.

I like Michael Turner's art and love Jim Lee's art.

Pantha getting her head punched off was, well...kinda 'holy shit'/crazy/this is serious type awesome.

Wow...I feel kinda good!

Booster Gold is my second all-time favorite hero, the first is Nightwing.

I've just only recently read the original Gaiman Sandman series.

I actually own most of "Young Heroes in Love".

I love crappy, second-string heroes and villains.

DC will always win out over Marvel for me.

While I think Identity Crisis was good, the ending was lame and I think the series as a whole was a big mistake.

Greg Rucka can kiss my ass, Ted Kord will stay dead only until a new writer comes on that really loved him has the chance to bring him back.

Although I read Outsiders and Green Arrow, I still think Winnick is a hack who injects his personal belief with an obvious lack of subtlety.

Kevin Smith should kick Winnick's ass for turning Ollie back into an unlikable philanderer.

I love the Golden Age heroes and their off-spring. It's a shame the Infinitor's are always on the short list.

I like both Kyle and Hal as GL's.

Speaking of GLs, I like Guy Gardner WAY more than Kyle or John. Didn't he give Bats the "pressed hams" in a recent book? Without a doubt Guy is my favorite GL.

I like Guy as a hard-ass. Not as an A-Hole like he's so often presented. It's a subtle difference but an important one.

I must confess that I am constantly surprised by how often the folks here agree on most things.

My first comic book crush was Topaz from Amethyst.

And I was seriously ticked off when Giffen had him cut his hair off.

My favourite Shady 'do will always be the Cockrum era redesign...then Grell later made the "bob" darker and longer which I didnt like all that much. But, I guess everybody's ideas of likes and dislikes are different shrug

Yeah, they should never have let Giffen ruin the Amethyst dimension. Or JLA, or Defenders, or Suicide Squad, or...

I kind of thought Giffen was channelling Jack Kirby when he first started at DC doing KAMANDI...and then when he provided pencils for the DEFENDERS...Another experimental phase? Certainly light-years from all those faboo designs when he drew the Great Darkness Saga in LEGION...
