OK, I do my internetting (word?) from a public computer at my old law school. So today, I come in and most are taken. I sit down at one terminal that is empty, but there is a word document on the screen. I figure "OK, I'll minimize it rather than delete it. And if the person comes back, they can have the terminal back." But then there is also the person's hotmail account open. (It has in the text the same word doc)

Well, it has been 40 minutes since I sat down and no sign of the person. If the person doesn't come back, do you think I should close their hotmail for them or leave it up? I am tempted to send them an e-mail (from their own account). Would you do that? Opinions welcome.

I probably would send them an e-mail from their account reminding them to close everything down before leaving a public computer.

I'm a big fan of Star Trek's prime directive (noninterference) in these types of cases.

I would send them an email telling them that they had won the Legion World Grand Lotto and asking them to send me their bank account info (and SSi # for verification pueposes, of course) so that their winnings could be transfered to their account electronically. wink

Just kidding but this is someone that 1) gets distracted way too easily to ever become a lawyer or 2) is too forgetful to ever become a lawyer or 3) is too stoopid to ever...

...well maybe not too stupid! laugh

Ohh.. to answer your question, I would just shut down their account and get to work (surfing) rather than wasting any more time. You have been more than patient to have waited this long as it is.

Well, it's not like I haven't done any work (aka surfing) while waiting for this person.

I think I will send an e-mail to her from her own account as I head out for the night. It has been about 4 hours since I sat down here.

Save the dock to the desktop, send the email, close the hotmail, and since you're aware it's a "she" and you're in the law school library, send her my name and email. smile

Maybe it was done on purpose. Part of an ethics test for First Years and you happen to take the seat instead.

I'd email her from her own account and tell her how lucky she is that it was you, a really nice person, who got there after her, and not some opportunistic creep.

It wouldn't matter if I saved the doc to the desktop because the desktops get wiped daily.

And by this time I only remember that her name was Rebecca S_______.

OK, so today I am on the subway. There is a seat between me and a college-age girl. I heard something drop and see that she had dropped an empty can of Red Bull in the seat between us. She was not doing anything but listening to her Ipod. So I turn to her and said "Excuse me, are you going to leave that there?" She took the earpiece out and turned towards me. I said again "Are you just going to leave that there?" Without a word, she turned to staring straight ahead and put the earpiece back in. A guy standing opposite us looked and me with a bemused/puzzled look.

The next stop was mine and I got up to exit. She also got up and exited without taking the can. Following her up the stairs, I wanted to yank the earphones out of her ears. But the lawyer in me knew that would be a battery

So what would you have done? Would you have said anything to her in the first place?

My favourite public transport tactic when confronted with behaviour like this is to look extremely disgusted with the person, mutter "Scum" just loud enough for them to hear it, then turn very definitely away from them.

Given the state of Melbourne trains at the moment, I am muttering "Scum" for almost my entire commute. wink

Well I was thinking about this later and I think I may have been mistaken. There is a bit of a ledge behind the seat and the can could have been perched there and I didn't notice it. The woman could have been blameless. Although, if that had been me and someone said what I had said, I would have responded with "It is not my can."

I tend to clean up places I frequent, like the park where my daughter practices soccer, the parking lot where I work, all along the street I live on, etc. So, if I used that subway a lot, I'd probably pick it up myself. I would only confront someone about littering if I knew for sure that she/he did it, like if I saw them drop/toss it. Even then, it'd be awkward, I'm sure. I'd probably try to be cute and sing out something passive aggressive like "We don't want to be a litterbug now, do we?"

Quis, may I ask one of these "What would you do's?"

Years ago, when my kids were little, we were on a fairly deserted beach, enjoying ourselves. Another group came along. I don't remember if they had kids or if they were just adults. Anyway, they had a dog with them, which made me become alert. It was a lab or some other similar sized dog. They let it off-leash, even though there was a sign clearly stating that pets must remain on leashes. The dog was having a blast, chasing a ball or something. I was definitely uncomfortable, and called to the people, "There's a leash law, here!" I was not rude, didn't swear or act aggressively.

They said that their dog was really nice. I replied that they know that, but I don't. They relented.

I know I was right, but I felt like I was the jerk in the scenario. I mean, what if the dog never did anything to scare my kids?

What if it did?

If we weren't there, those folks would have had a good ol' time with the romping dog.

My main consolation is knowing that the sign backed me up, and that there are other off-leash areas for dog owners to frequent.

Still, I think about it every now and then....

Sketch Lad,

Anyone who wants to can post a "what would you do". Sorry I didn't notice this earlier.

First, I am a dog lover, so I would not have said anything because I would not have been uncomfortable. I am also aware that not everyone is and some people actually fear dogs, even friendly ones.

Given the deserted nature of the beach, they could have moved further away from other people before letting the dog off the leash. They knew about the requirements of the beach. So as you said, you were in the right. Still I don't think there was any way you could have said anything to them without feeling a bit like a jerk.

Similarly, the other week my dad and I went to the beach. We went to the state park section and the part there allowed horseback riding with permits. There were a few people there riding horses. I could also see where the horses had left a little something. As we were walking back to the parking lot there were a couple of more little somethings in the parking lot. This one couple had come back and were putting their horse into the trailer. Another guy yelled at them that they needed to clean up after their horse. The woman gave the guy the finger. Dad & I discussed it. I didn't see any fresh manure in the parking lot, so I think the guy yelling had no right to yell at this particular couple. Dad agreed with me and he still thought the lady giving the finger was very funny.

OK so I do my internetting from my school library. Yesterday I was doing my stuff when the guy next to me (about 1&1/2 to 2 feet away) started having whispered conversations with people who would periodically come by. The conversations would last for 5-10 minutes.

I was really annoyed by them, but did not say anything because I wasn't using the computer for work or study. Would you have said anything?

To catch up.

Tripped her as she left the platform adn blamed it on a discarded red bull can.
Thrown a half full can of red bull into the bush for the dog to find and drink.
Joined the conversation with non-sequitors about red bull.

Not really a "what would you do" as a venting.

It started raining here and the sides of the streets quickly became little streams. I was walking in the midlle of the sidewalk, a good foot from the street. This car comes down the street pretty fast, hits the water on the ide, which splashed up and hit me.

I didn't get totally soaked, but still. It is not a good feeling to get splashed like that.

And not so much an answer as a commiseration:

I was walking across a bridge on a rainy day. Cars that drove by where splashing up the water, but there was a concrete barricade a couple of feet high, between the sidewalk and the traffic, that kept me from getting wet. Until a bus came along... I could not get out of the way since that would have meant a plunge to my icy death over the rail of the bridge. Istead, I get drenched from head to foot in muddy water. There was even mud in my ears afterward!
