The conclusion (though more of a coda) to the JLU/LSH crossover, and it comes across as pretty bland. Brainy does all the heavy lifting and the rest of the LSH are mostly backgrounders. There's an awkward scene between Brainy and Kara (how many times can they meet "for the first time"?), and everyone says goodbye.

My thoughts overall: Some LSH is better than no LSH, and by-the-numbers LSH is better than screwing it up, but there wasn't a lot to inspire here, nor much to revive the concept.

Let's see what Convergence does.

I agree.

Ironically, this is the same circumstance that Marvel's X-Men had before they were revamped back in the 70's.

So.... never say never.

Good point, Georgehaze.

I guess I'm not as glum at the conclusion of the the Infinitus Saga as some. While I had hoped the black hole storyline was a bit more suspenseful, it had a logical sci-fi conclusion that needed the teamwork of Dream Girl, White Witch and Brainiac 5 to pull off. I also enjoyed the use of Star Boy and Cosmic Boy's powers in a supporting role.

Indeed, at least Lemire's arc left the Legion at a better place than what Levitz and Giffen's deconstruction of the team did in LSH #23.

1.) The Legion is back together. Levitz disbanded the Legion. Lemire put it back together. That is huge for bringing back the franchise someday.

2.) The Legion Lost team is no longer lost but is reunited and back with the team. This was another huge development by Lemire. DeFalco and Levitz both ended their respective series with the Legion Lost team floundering in the 21st century. While I wish Lemire had taken a couple of panels for more of a reunion, I'm just glad that everyone went home to the 31st century and no one got left behind.

3.) Star Boy and Sun Boy are no longer dead. Both of their deaths under Levitz and Giffen's watch were unnecessary. I know it was supposed to help deconstruct the team for an in story reboot, but since the series got cancelled anyways, killing them off in such a way seemed foolish. Lemire corrected that error. For that I am forever grateful!

4.) By adding in characters from the reboot team to the Retroboot Legion, Lemire gave us the novel concept that a Composite Legion is possible. This should be a fan pleaser, and I believe it is a much more satisfying result than just adding Gates and XS to the team like Johns did at the end of Lo3W. While Lemire doesn't explain their inclusion in story, I'm willing to run with it if it makes a broader fan base happy. (Can anybody help me identify the reboot members on page 12? Only having read/collected the original and Retroboot Legion books I have no clue who the extra composite Legionnaires are.)

5.) With the whole Legion traveling back to the 21st century to fight Infinitus, Brainiac 5 thinks they may have changed the future. This actually be a good thing from a storytelling point of view. I hope it is followed up on.

Like I said, while the Infinitus Saga wasn't the most exciting story, it does leave the Legion in a better place. It's a much better conclusion that LSH #23. If this were to be the last new Legion adventure published in a long while, I must admit I'd choose this end over what we got with Levitz any day.

I think Leather Wolf's positive thoughts are right on. I found this story utterly unreadable but at least a few things were established that could be utilized in the future.

Nicely put Leather Wolf. I would love to see this Composite Legion return to their on title.

Page 12 breakdown

Other: Ultra the Multi-Alien

Thanks for your help Elvar! Between your list and Wikipedia I was able to research all of the extra members. I wish Lemire had made a list of all the Legionnaires included in his story arc. Just as importantly, I missed a splash page at the end that showed all of the Legionnaires who had traveled to the 21st century to fight Infinitus. If we Legion fans have a hard time keeping track of who got included in this arc, imagine the difficulty that the average JLU reader had in keeping track of all the guest starring Legionnaires in their book who were never included on a roll call.

I now have the feeling that I should pick this up at least for reasons of it being one of the few places I can get some legion in. I have to say that I'm really enjoying all of your comments on the arc however smile Makes me really want to read the arc now.

The Great Darkness Saga it is not but as a badly needed Legion fix it's serviceable. Many thanks to Leather Wolf for his advice on which issues feature the Legion. Hopefully this is a beginning, not an end.

Whaddya mean I'm out of continuity?

I thought that all the different versions were showing up because time/space was getting screwy around Ultra/Infinitus and so multiple Legions from multiple times or Earths were showing up. I was sure I read someone saying something like this but looking back through the issues I can only find Time Institute scientists saying that the past was in flux.

Brainiac 5 Asks White Witch to use the same amplification spell dhe used last year on Takron-Galtos when they were fighting Universo. Can anyone remember a story in which this happened (in which case we have a Legion timeline placement) or was it just added for colour or to show that even more time has passed in the 31st Century?

Lastly I did like the bit between Dawnstar and Equinox - very real and appropriate - but didn't Dawnstar grow up on Starhaven, not Earth? Minor point. Still a good scene.

It is interesting that Convergence Superboy & the Legion of Superheroes #1 as already generated more comments in day than what JLU #10 and the conclusion of the Infinitus Saga generated in a month. Why is that? Was the Legion storyline in JLU that bad or what?

My guess: Convergence features the pre-Crisis Legion. (or at least is billed as such, continuity blips aside.)

That doesn't bode well for the rumored relaunch, should one actually take place. Dear Gods, not a second Retroboot!!

For hardly anyone talking about it here, the Legion storyline in JLU #10 did end fairly well with 31,722 readers. Check out the where JLU #10 ranked in the top 300 for March 2015

http://icv2.com/articles/news/view/31330/top-300-comics-actual-march-2015

That was down slightly in readership from JLU. #9 which had 31,932 readers.

The overall trend for JLU is down though, granted for the Legion storyline, that downward trajectory is slowing. Whether that's also a result of the variant covers, or the book leveling out, is difficult to say. Chart from Dave Carter's blog (http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/2015/04/dc-comics-month-to-month-sales-february.html)

04/2014: Justice League United #0 -- 68,431
05/2014: Justice League United #1 -- 64,209 (- 6.2%)
06/2014: Justice League United #2 -- 62,928 (- 2.0%)
07/2014: Justice League United #3 -- 47,919 (- 23.9%)
08/2014: Justice League United #4 -- 42,504 (- 11.3%)
09/2014: Futures End #1 -- 72,839 (+ 71.4%)
10/2014: Justice League United #5 -- 38,066 (- 47.7%)
11/2014: Justice League United #6 -- 34,610 (- 9.1%)
12/2014: Justice League United #7 -- 31,904 (- 7.8%)
01/2015: Justice League United #8 -- 28,720 (- 10.0%)
02/2015: Justice League United #9 -- 31,932 (+ 11.2%)

I wonder if an increase in Legion fans reading JLU slowed its decline or not. It will be interesting to see the rate of decline once Convergence is over and JLU is no longer spotlighting the Legion.

Issue # 9 had a Harley Quinn Variant, which showed a similar increase across the board for most titles (explaining the jump from 8 to 9).

Issue #10 had the movie poster variant AND a 1:25 Dan Hipp variant, which likely kept the numbers afloat a bit.

So, I've read a half dozen or so of this title, and still have no idea what Equinox's powers are, other than that they have something to do with the seasons, and she can fly.

Anyone have more information than that?

Her DCwikia entry is singularly useless, for this. smile

Spring based rain and plant growth and healing powers? Summer based heat and light and fire powers? Autumn based decay and disintegration and wind powers? Winter based cold and ice powers? I have no idea!

MT Lemire is being intentionally vague about Equinox's powers. Maybe looking for some big reveal in the future.

I think he has written a character that cannot survive. It is pretty easy for another writer to take over on a character called "Lightning Lad", but to write one that is (a) authentically Canadian (b) authentically Cree (c) with ill-defined powers based on actual Cree mythology and which change with the seasons: what if he gets taken of Justice League United tomorrow? Does he expect every writer to do a months-long anthropological study?

And how are her powers affected by being off-planet, or even in the Southern Hemisphere?

Animal Man was shown adapting pretty quickly to Rann's alien biome.

"wildly untraditional teams" = Well written?

"heroes and villains to work together" = hard to tell the difference most days. Thanks DC.

"stop another cosmic catastrophe before it happens.2 = Much better than the wildly untraditional team of Merryman, Anti-Monitor, Jonni DC and one of the Green Team who tried to stop it after it had occurred.

Slapping anyone is a bad thing and should never be encouraged. However, if parts of DC marketing were to walk into things of their own volition, well...
