Tomorrow is the Monthly LA Comic Convention and we are pulling on our spelunking gear and going back issue bin diving(preferably $1 and $0.25 bins as the deep end can be scary) So as someone whose Legion history has gargantuan holes can you recomend issues for me to look for?

Anything from LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (Vol. 2) #284 through LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (Vol. 2) #306 .

See here for all of the covers.

Also, LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (Vol. 3) #1 through LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (Vol. 3) #63 , with only a few stinkers scattered in that range.

See here for all of the covers.

Anything that's a quarter or 50 cents! Really, it's hard to go wrong with anything at that price.

If the prices are higher ($1 is high as far as I'm concerned), you may want to steer away from the 5YL stuff (appx.1990-1994) unless you can get a full run, or a several sequential issues. I love 5YL, but I can tell you I had a hard time understanding my few random issues.

Giffen/Levitz stuff (roughly 1980-1984) is quite good and since it was a big seller, it's not that unusual to come across high-quality copies in the cheap bin.

The 3-issue "Secrets of the LSH" mini from the early 80s is a decent reference of pre-Crisis history. If you see the 7-issue late-80s Who's Who in the LSH, grab it! I got mine (in great condition) in a fifty-cent bin. Def. worth the 350 pennies.

Don't pay more than $.25 apiece for the Legionnaires 3 mini. Ugh, what a stinker... faint

First of all look for cheap Legion archives! At $20 they equate to $1-$2 an issue, in a cool format.

OK now for cheap cheap (good, good) smile

Pretty much anything pre 1989, 5 Year Gap. As they are not all that confusing.

Gotta get the 7 part Who's Who in the Legion, & the LSH Index. Harder to find, so a good dealz cheap.

Any issues from Superboy 197-245, & issues 250 & 251.

LSH Reflecto arc around issues 280 and Giffen 285 - 306.

Baxter series issues 1-38.

Wait on the post 5 year gap & Legionnaires until you can get a BIG chunk together.

Easy start up is Legion Lost & The Legion from DnA.

Let us know how you made out!

LLLater!

A buck for those early SLSH issues? Nice!

What's your opinion on your finds?

THAT was an awesome run! Why did the issues immediately before and after it suck so bad?

I need more of the 5YL. I have a old roleplaying book that serves as a guide to the time period, but it is still hard to follow.

I am truly appreciating the superboy books some very classic Clark Kent moments.

The later stuff just seemed a little overproduced. Too much concept too many little bits supposed to get the kids interested... of course I am only getting a sampling

"Overproduced" is probably a good description of most of that series. It was like they're trying to write the title as a big, Hollywood Blockbuster movie. So much flash and so little substance. I guess some people go for that kind of thing, but it wasn't my cup of tea.

Well my next stop I think is pulling out the serious coin for some adventure or maybe even popping for an Archive trade

Why not just wait for the Showcase to come out?

well that would cover the first 2 archives right... Then who knows how long for Showcase 2 so I should think about buying one of the higher numbered volumes.

I'd recommend #5 to start out with, as you get the tail end of the Ed Hamilton era (and some of his best stories) and the very beginning of the Jim Shooter era (which aren't necessarily his best stories, but there are least a couple of "classics" there). #6 probably contains the best of the Shooter era.
