Music, eh?
I loves me some rock'a'billy. Dave Edmunds (a founding member of Rockpile) kicks it old school.

This record is held by Morten Harket, lead singer with group A-Ha. In "Summer Moved On" (no. 33, June 2000) he holds a vocal note for 20.2 seconds.

Runner-up, and the man responsible for the longest note held on a solo single is Bill Withers. In his 1978 (and 1988) hit "Lovely Day", he holds a vocal note for 18 seconds. We're told that the note is the 'E' above 'middle C'.

The longest note held by a woman is found in "Dim All The Lights," Donna Summer's 1979 hit (16 seconds).

It is worth pointing out that a number of recent dance tracks have utilized digital 'stretching' techniques to give the impression of extended vocals. We have management / record company confirmation that the notes being held in the above tracks were all done in 'real time' and represent genuine vocal skill.
Found here .

Is it just me, or is Morten Harket just about the coolest real name in show business since the heyday of Joshua Quagmire ? [/b]
Morten Harket did a wonderful, unironic (?) solo cover of "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" for the soundtrack of Coneheads, an average movie with an above-average soundtrack.

The Museum of Bad Art (MOBA) is a privately owned museum whose stated aim is "to celebrate the labor of artists whose work would be displayed and appreciated in no other forum". It has two branches, one in Dedham, Massachusetts, and the other in nearby Somerville. Its permanent collection includes 500 pieces of "art too bad to be ignored", 25 to 35 of which are on public display at any one time.

MOBA was founded in 1994, after antique dealer Scott Wilson showed a painting he had recovered from the trash to some friends, who suggested starting a collection. Within a year, receptions held in Wilson's friends' home were so well-attended that the collection required its own viewing space. The museum moved to the basement of a theater in Dedham. Explaining the reasoning behind the museum's establishment, co-founder Jerry Reilly said in 1995: "While every city in the world has at least one museum dedicated to the best of art, MOBA is the only museum dedicated to collecting and exhibiting the worst." To be included in MOBA's collection, works must be original and have serious intent, but they must also have significant flaws without being boring; curators are not interested in displaying art that is deliberately kitsch.

MOBA has been mentioned in dozens of off-the-beaten-path guides to Boston, featured in international newspapers and magazines, and has inspired several other collections throughout the world that set out to rival its own visual atrocities. Deborah Solomon of The New York Times Magazine noted that the attention the Museum of Bad Art receives is part of a wider trend of museums displaying "the best bad art". The museum has been criticized for being anti-art, but the founders deny this, responding that its collection is a tribute to the sincerity of the artists who persevered with their art despite something going horribly wrong in the process. According to co-founder Marie Jackson, "We are here to celebrate an artist's right to fail, gloriously."

The area known as Alta California was colonized by the Spanish Empire beginning in the late 18th century. It and the rest of Mexico became an independent republic in 1821. In 1846 California broke away from Mexico, and after the Mexican-American War, Mexico ceded California to the United States. It became the 31st state admitted to the United States on September 9, 1850.

California is the third-largest U.S. state by land area after Alaska and Texas, and preceding Montana. Its geography ranges from the Pacific coast to the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the east, to Mojave desert areas in the southeast and the Redwood-Douglas fir forests of the northwest. The center of the state is dominated by the Central Valley, one of the most productive agricultural areas in the world.

The California Gold Rush dramatically changed California with a large influx of people and an economic boom which caused San Francisco to grow from a tiny hamlet of tents to a world renowned boomtown in the 19th century. The early 20th century was marked by Los Angeles becoming the center of the American entertainment industry, in addition to the growth of a large tourism sector in the state. Along with California's prosperous agricultural industry, other industries include aerospace, petroleum, and computer and information technology. California ranks amongst the ten largest economies in the world, and were it a separate country, it would be 35th among the most populous countries, with a GDP similar to Italy.

Pedestal Table ~ is that a photo or a silk screen print? It's hard for me to tell for sure now-a-days!

Glass slippers would never work for me. They'd be splinters the first time I stubbed my toe on the floor! I'd say about 10 - 30 seconds.

Perimeter of a rectangle ~ Lx2 + Wx2.
Area of a rectangle - LxW.
That's what the 6th grade math students are currently not working very hard to understand.

With the new enphasis (well, not completely new)on test scores for 'No Child Left Behind', the math teachers are going crazy trying to actually teach concepts, rather than just working on giving the answers to the test questions so the kids can get passing scores.

Sad.

ah, yes. "teaching the test."

it's funny. When I was a kid, my native New York State was held in high regard for its public-ed. Then we stumbled into standardized tests early, and sank whatever lead we have.

Now NCLB is trying to sink everyone else just like we sank ourselves.

You and me both, Candle. All I know is that the original is oil and charcoal on canvas.

So I'm working towards this big insurance/reinsurance designation and its like a 2-3 process with 8 major exams. I took the fourth one this morning (think I did really good on this one but it was basically on investing and capital structure).

But oh wow...this is a pretty damn dry subject compared to my old history exams eek

Capital Structure is totally interesting. The creativity exhibited by those fraudsters, I mean Financial Engineers helped lure in suckers, er.. I mean new sources of funding for risky projects.
