The guy sees this ritual on PBS, learns it, becomes so cool that when he does it at the school dance, all the cool people start doing it too.
The quote is from the geeks who recognize the ritual being danced by the cool people and the geeks start laughing at the cool people. Classic stuff, best part of the movie, and other such words.
