Ok, hint time:

The act in question got their first big break appearing in a Dustin Hoffman film.

Second hint:

The guy who scored the aforementioned Hoffman film also wrote all this band's early material and had written a big hit for Johnny Cash.

OK, one more:

This group's best known hit was about getting a prominent placement in a very popular American music magazine.

OK. It has to be Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show, "The Cover of the Rolling Stone."

That would be them.

Their early material was writtten by Shel Silverstein, who wrote Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue".

Your turn.

Dr. Hook got its name from the pirate-like appearance of its lead singer, Ray Sawyer, who wore an eyepatch. But Sawyer wasn't the only "handicapped" rock star. Which famous guitarist once had a finger chopped off by an axe?

Gee, is it clue time, already?

The guitarist in question, though better known as a member of a group, once released a solo album with a picture of his hand with the missing finger on the cover.

Clue #2:

As a guitarist, he was probably grateful that it was only one finger.

Is there anybody out there?

Darn, that would have been a good clue if the answer were Dave Gilmour. But, so far as I know, Gilmour has all of his digits.

But here's the last clue: If the finger had been reattached, this guy might have been singing "A Touch of Gangrene."

Well, this question has killed the thread, hasn't it?

I guess that's appropriate since the answer is Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead.

Next question is up for grabs.

Okay, here's an easy one to get things rolling again.

Here's the when: June 1, 1974.

You tell me who.

And no, it's The Who.

It's not Doctor Who, either.

Ken

Okay, maybe I was too obscure.

The concert had four headliners and included covers of Heartbreak Hotel and The End. Who were the four headliners at this concert that took place 30 years ago yesterday?

I'll try.

The Concert for Kampuchea. Headliners: George Harrison, The Who, Eric Clapton and Ravi Shankaar

Actually I have no idea if Shankaar was at that concert. all I remember is the end of the concert film and everybody in white tux jackets with tails except Townshend, who was in a black tux jacket with tails. Just to show what a bad boy he was. smile

Sorry Tab, but wrong concert. Welcome aboard, by the way.

Here's another hint.

All four of the headliners were better known for having been in other groups. Here's a verse from the one I think is probably the least well-known.

Two goes into four
Two times no more
Two becomes four

Blue goes into green
Mostly unseen
Blue becomes green

Dreams take me so far
Life is the star
Trapped in my jar

Go
Follow the wind
Open your heart
Then you will start
To make it
Better

John Cale, Kevin Ayers, Brian Eno, and Nico. An album of that show was released under the "June 1, 1974" handle.

What song did Nirvana rip off for their "Come As You Are"?

Come to think of it I believe Killing Joke attempted to sue Nirvana over the song but lost their case.

It was indeed "Eighties" by Killing Joke (not that anyone in Nirvana ever admitted to it).

KJ singer Jaz Coleman claims he dropped the suit after Cobain's suicide.

Nice to have you back in this thread, LL. You're up.

Thanks OM.

Staying in the theme, who wrote the lyrics, "Copycats ripped off my songs" and in what song were they used?

I hope I didn't return to kill the thread.

Here's a hint. Sorta. The song title shares a similar name with one by GnR.

I'll have a guess:

"One In A Million" by Bob Dylan.

Nope.

The song title is similar to Paradise City by Guns N Roses. And the artist is more known for singing about the color of his girlfriend's eyes.

If that doesn't give it away I'll have to come up with another question. laugh

Man, I wasn't even thinking classic rock...
