It's usually agreed to be about the plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper.

Look here for a more detailed analysis.

Thanks! That analysis makes the most sense of any I've read so far.

I almost always have to sit and finish listening to this song whenever it comes on the radio, especially since my favorite lyrics come toward the end:

I met a girl who sang the blues and I asked her for some happy news but she just smiled and turned away, I went down to the sacred store where I'd heard the music years before but the man there said the music wouldn't play and in the streets the children screamed, the lovers cried, and the poets dreamed but not a word was spoken, the church bells all were broken and the three men I admire most, the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost, they caught the last train for the coast, the day, the music, died, and they were singin...

The lyrics "Oh and there we were all in one place, a generation lost in space with no time left to start again" also get me every time...

Stu,

"American Pie" is one of my favorite songs of all-time, too. Labradorian is right in that the song is essentially about Buddy Holly ("the day the music died") but it's also about the decade following his demise. There are cryptic references to Elvis, Bob Dylan, the Beatles and the Stones, as well as the Vietnam war. The "girl who sang the blues" is said to be Janis Joplin.

I came across a fairly exhaustive analysis of the song on a website a few years ago, but no longer have the URL. It shouldn't be too hard to locate, though.

Labradorian got it. smile Btw, the other song I too-vaguely hinted with is "Arthur Curry" by Ookla the Mok (sp?). They repeat a line from the chorus they repeat and add to goes like this in their song:
"Superman never made any money, but tell that to DC"

I'm going to post the lyrics to Superman's Song over on the "Post it if you feel it" thread, because it's been in my head for weeks. And it's a darned good song! Take it away!

The song is a history of rock & roll and its culture from it's early days through the early 70's. As HWW mentions it references not only Buddy Holly, Elvis, Janis Joplin, but the Beatles, Stones, Dylan, The Hell's Angels, Black Sabbath and many, many more. My 7th grade teacher actually spent two days dissecting and analysing the song with us back in 71-72. It's really amazing how much R&R minutia & trivia is in it.

No problem. I think we've all done that at one point or another.

Who was once said to have been kicked out of his band because he liked The Beatles?

Near Monday, anyway.

HWW got it.

The Beatles thing may well have been exaggerated for the media, though Matlock was more into pop than the others.

I guess the Johnny and the boys thought they were just too badass to like the Beatles.

What band considered calling itself Eyes, but nixed the idea because it was too similar to the name of the band that some of its members had been in?

Clue time: This is an '80s band, and half the line-up was in the previous band.

DING! DING DING! We have a winner.

Asia bassist and vocalist John Wetton once said that they had originally considered calling the band Eyes, but balked when they realized people would refer to them as "Ex-Yes." (Guitarist Steve Howe and keyboard player Geoff Downes were both former Yes men.)

You're up, Labby.
