Why isn't his work getting more hype? DC has some great artists working for them, and not on their top tier titles.
Just found out Joe is the lead penciller on DC's 52*. This is great news. Not only won't we have to worry about timeliness, but we're guaranteed a great looking book no matter what they throw in it.

HAWKMAN #48

You'd think that Shayera Thal would get some kind of memorial here in a book called HAWKMAN, set around the time of her death. Guess not. I *did* like that the Golden Eagle stuff got dealt with, even though it seemed rushed-- both in the story and in the lack of time between GE appearances.

Carter and Kendra finally get together, in a nicely done scene, though one somewhat bizarrely set in the middle of a war.

There was something off about the whole issue. Events were rushed or drawn out, the story jumped during a couple of panels so I wasn't sure how it flowed. I get the feeling this was drawn out to allow for the IC stuff.

And this time, Seymour's bit about a garish cover does apply...

Yeah, the last coule issues have been a prime example of why I hate things like "Identity Crisis." The writer has a groove going, a nice pace, interesting storyline, and suddenly is told, "Shoehorn in this stuff about our stupid crossover even though it'll mess up everything you've been building since you started on the title."

I know he and Kendra were destined to get together, but her willingness felt rushed and expedient for "IC" and this one-year-later deal so he can go missing or whatever, and the book becomes hers. And it wasn't too long ago that he had found someone else. Put some real breather space in there before he hops in bed with someone else, even Kendra.

HAWKMAN 49

The Chris Batista/Cam Smith art is wonderful. I thought Batista was terrific when he worked on the Legion and he keeps improving beyond that.

The Hawks get to smile and laugh for an extended scene before their apparent long-lasting separation by the time of 'One Year Later'.

Looking at the summation of the Rann/Thanagar War, it really strikes that I should've enjoyed an event featuring Vril Dox, Tigorr, Captain Comet, Adam Strange, etc. Rann and Thanagar themselves had me eager for the mini. But I just didn't.

At least we got a rejuvenated Blackfire and a semi-reformed Golden Eagle out of it. No compensation for Jade and Shayera, though. Those characters will be missed. And both went out in a 'nothing' fashion, IMO. I just hope Jade isn't going to be the voice of Kyle's ring or something. That'd cheese me off.

Are all this month's DC books ending with echo effect of heroes through several versions? OUTSIDERS did. JSA and TEEN TITANS didn't.

I agree the Batista art is AMAZING. This guy is quickly becoming my fave artist probably. I've been a fan since Marvel's Spaceknight...and sooner. I actually got Spaceknights cause he was the artist! I just can't remember what title I first really noticed him. Some 2099 stuff? X-stuff? Or Spidey stuff?

This issue was a nothing special. Another Rann/Thanagar battle...which have gotten old IMO.

Worried about Carter. He's one of my fave characters of all time. This has been my fave solo title since #1.

Hmmmm... the future doesn't look too bright for Kendra:

From Newsarama:
Click Here For A SpoilerKendra is someone who has relationship problems with the world and other people Chaykin said, adding that to address this Kendra will be “dating most of the DC Universe”.

”Just the boys?” Rucka asked immediately?

”That’s an issue. That’s something we’ve discussed,” replied Chaykin.

”It’s going to be a book that’s sly, funny, sexy, and have a great deal of airborne violence,” he added.

I was worried that Chaykin might have a hand in the plotting, and that just might confirm it.

I just went through and read the entire run of Hawkman, because I was considering dropping the title (not because of future changes, just because I'm trying not to buy comics just because I already have umpteen hundred of that series...). You know, it's been a really good title. More violent than I'm used to, but great villains, inventive, sexual tension, love stories, most of what I want a comic book to be. Kudos to all the creative peoples. It's a keeper. Hopefully, One Year Later won't turn it to poop.

So do we keep this thread, change the title, or start a new one? This book is all about Kendra now, and I'm eager to see her fly.

Bully a mod into changing the title to Hawkman/Hawkgirl smile

All right, which one of you wimps caved?! mad wink

Eh. I read 50... and was a might underwhelmed. Maybe I need to give it a second read. Chaykin's work had too many talking head panels for my tastes, though I'll admit he draws a GREAT Kendra. love

Hopefully we see more HAWKGIRL in the next issue... we only got her in-costume in a dream sequence. frown

I thought # 50 was okay, enjoyed the Chaykin art.

Nowhere near as good as the Golden Eagle/revamped villains arc, which may be the best HAWKMAN story *ever*. I'll hang in there a few more issues.

You know, I agree with Lash. The Golden Eagle/revamped villains arc is probably the best Hawkman story EVER. This title has been great.

I really want Carter to be a part of it though.

When I worked at the comic store, the Golded Eagle/revamped villains arc was going on. I got more people to start reading Hawkman during that run.. everytime I saw Hawkman climbing in total sales my heart lept with joy.

Its a real feather in the caps of Palmiotti/Gray as writers.

The latest solicit of Hawkgirl shows Hawkman and talks about him possibly returning. I *really* hope thats the case! He's become one of my favorite heroes in recent years.

Carter can return, as long as the focus is Kendra. I went into this title wanting more of her. I liked GrayPal, and they did a kick ass story. But Kendra got pushed to the side. Gimme my Hawkgirl!

#50 left me on the fence. There were a few things I liked (but not Hawkgirl's lips- she looks like that gal who's married to Harry Hamlin)... I miss Carter, though.

Truth to tell, I think DC chose the wrong Hawkgirl to star in this title.

Imagine Shayera back with a pair of wings like Kendra's... sigh.

ML, I dig both Kendra and Shayera. I would have been overjoyed if Carter stayed on Thanagar and we got Hawkwoman and Hawkgirl starring in this title.

Reminder, ish #51 is out this week.

I'm surprised no one's commented on Kendra's comments in the Superman books about dropping out of JSA. Personally, I think it's a shame-- I always liked her best in the team setting.

But, judging by the comments between her and Hal, they both seem like good candidates for the new Justice League book. So who knows?

Either way, if this book doesn't pick up soon, I'm going to be majorly bummered. I want to like it but... sigh I guess we'll just have to wait and see!! It's out today, after all. smile

I got sucked into the GrayPal team's version and actually found myself liking the title, which is rare b/c I always considered Hawkman to be more of a B-list superhero.

The art on that last issue made me want to drop the title, no lie. I don't pay $3 for Ernie Pook's Comeek and I won't be paying for Hawkgirl unless the production gets a little better. While I'm normally a story guy, the artwork was a major disappointment for me. I expect a little more out of my DC titles and that issue simply did not deliver.
