When I was very little, my parents bought me a Raggedy Ann & Andy book. I thought Ann & Andy looked creepy, so it was the least favorite book in my pre-school years' collection.

We had Raggedy Ann and Andy stuff, but my preferred cloth buddy was a Seventies pastel knock-off with a pink cloth body, blonde yarn hair and blue puffball eyes named "Funny."

I had a Raggedy Andy and a Dapper Dan as a child. I loved my Andy, but occasionally, seeing him lie on my bed in the dark, I was unpleasantly reminded of Regan from The Exorcist! I was terrified of that movie and only recently 'exorcised' my fear of it by forcing myself to watch it a few months ago after avoiding it for forty-odd years.
It really hasn't aged well. The only scenes I found remotely disturbing were the graphic depictions of her examinations in the hospital. Otherwise, the film has super-choppy editing and the demon scenes are farcical.

I remember watching a cartoon with Raggedy Ann and Andy as characters. Vaguely.

I saw it maybe a month ago. I agree, I found the first half much more disturbing than the rest after not having seen it for many years, and I think its because I'm a father; seeing a child go through all those tests is uncomfortable to watch. The rest of it is more for shock.

Can't really add much to what Lardy and GL have already said about "The Exorcist," except that John Boorman made the (IMHO misunderstood and unfairly maligned) sequel "Exorcist II: The Heretic" precisely because, as a father, he was outraged by what he perceived as the first movie's condoning of child abuse.

I remember watching The Excorcist with friends as a teen, and everyone thinking I was weird because I mostly found it silly rather than frightening.
I suppose it boosted album sales for Tubular Bells, though, so that's a good thing.

That's how I feel about the movie version of "The Shining." Nicholson's performance, if we can even call it that, is complete and utter ego-driven buffoonery. And I like several of Kubrick's other movies, but, yeesh, did he drop the ball on that one.

Based on how I was unaffected by so many other horror movies I saw as a child, I have to think that the big scare factor for me back then was I was a child myself and seeing all this happening to another child was hitting close to home. Plus, I was brought up pretty religious, so this seemed "real" to me.

Even now as an adult, I dislike watching horror movies. I use entertainment to relax, so I prefer comedies.

Plus, I was brought up pretty religious, so this seemed "real" to me. No I had a slightly different experience - I also had a religious upbringing (RC), but I ended up being more into the second half of the movie when I saw it as a youth, probably more because the parents didn't want the kids to see it. But because of the RC background, I was more fascinated by the concept and the fact that there was a branch that supposedly dealt with that, and the concept of the demons, etc. Again, probably more to do with the fact that our elders didn't want us to see it. I actually preferred this religious angle of horror more than things like the Nightmare on Elm Streets and such. Then I just stopped watching horror movies in general, and now they are mostly zombie variations.

If a horror movie seems to have an offbeat concept or plot, I might think about seeing it. I honestly think the original version of *The Vanishing* (1988) was the scariest movie I ever saw in my life. Which is funny because there's no supernatural elements to it at all, except maybe for the antagonist's incredible good luck. I have never rewatched it. I don't think that I could.

For my money, S2 Ep 7 of Twin Peaks (in which the murderer is revealed) scared and haunted me more than many other traditional horror movies.

Oooh now I'm going to Google it, cleome! Let me know if it holds up. (I've never watched the English-language version, which sounds more corny and action-cliche'-ridden than the original.)

The plot is chilling, cleome. And apparently the reveal was handled well!
Bit of a downer ending though...

Yeah. I can't imagine that it would have had the same emotional impact if the good guy had won. Though there are movies which have managed to give a superficial happy ending to stories but leave you with a feeling of melancholia: like the good guys won but you know it's only for a little while.
There was an old noir like that I saw on YouTube not too long ago called The Chase. You could feel the heavy hand of the Hayes Office in the conclusion, but given all the problems the protagonists had from the start, you'd have to imagine that their happiness couldn't possibly last forever.

I wonder how it would have been if, for example, the bad guy had been caught. And the hero has to live with the loss. or... maybe he chooses to follow his lost love.

Yeah. I think it's a matter of debate how much of the conclusion came from Raymond being exceptionally lucky and clever, and how much came from Rex just not being very concerned with what life might offer once the mystery was resolved.

Yeah, Rex was very very obsessed (I also wonder: how did he get a new girlfriend, when he was so definitely obsessed with the old one!) Part of me also of course really wants to see Raymond get his comeuppance... I know that does not always happen in real life, but I'm an idealist

I've never seen The Vanishing. I may have caught an episode or two of Twin Peaks. I thought, though, that the killer wasn't revealed until the big screen Fire, Walk with Me?

Nope, FWWM was an expansion of the themes introduced in Season 2 (including the identity of the killer), which made the content of the movie all that much more disturbing...
