Was surprised that no one posted about it here. So, here's the thread.
This appears to be a separate animated film from the HBO Max animated series that Bendis is developing. I'll add more details here as they become available.
Yes! I saw it on Saturday, but wasn't sure how "real" it was.
My current theory is that it's the Bendis show pilot episode, just repurposed and we haven't been told yet, since it usually takes a lot of time to get a full animated movie going, and a 2023 release usually means that some kind of production is already underway. Since the only production we are aware of is Benids', I'm assuming its that.
That or someone in DC Marketing REALLY messed up.
I'm kind of surprised, as either way, we've heard nothing since the early Saturday announcement from ANYONE - not Bendis and not DC. (as of this writing, that is)

Two different projects. Two different production companies. One is a series for HBO Max the other is a part of the Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s DC animated movies.
While details on the four movies remain pretty slim at this point, we do know a few things. Legion of Super-Heroes will be the first time we’ll see an animated project focused fully on the Legion of Super-Heroes since the animated series ended in 2008. In the film, Supergirl finds she needs a few lessons as she acclimates to Earth…and Superman looks to the heroes of the Legion to get it done.
I'm assuming this will be the Supergirl and Legion of the DC Animated Movie Universe. Not related to Bendis' Legion nor Young Justice's Legion.

Color me surprised! It's really hard to keep these things secret these days, so I imagine they are a ways down the production chain!
Thanks for the update!

So stoked to see Arm Fall Off Boy, Chemical King among the cast! Also Invisible Kid, Bouncing Boy and Triplicate Girl (though less surprising for these last two as they already starred in the Legion toon series)
It will be interesting to see what they do with Brainiac 5, since he is also listed as a new enemy for Kara. Also the voice cast lists Brainiac, Brainiac 2,3 and 4.
I saw that Invisible Kid will be in it, but it doesn't say whether it will be Lyle Norg or Jacques Foccart, or perhaps some kind of amalgam of the two.

My guess is it's Jacques, as the voice actor is black, but it's very possible they'll amalgamize the two of them.

I would not hate the notion of Jacques being the science-y geek who invents the invisibility formula, as the old 'black hero gets powers from something a white man invented' trope can go die in a fire. (Luke Cage, Jacques Foccault, Bill Foster, all given their powers by stuff a 'smarter' white guy made / did to them. Blue Marvel and Michael Holt, black inventor/geniuses, responsible for their own empowerment, are a step in the right direction.)
That said, I'm also a fan of Lyle, and would even more love to see both of them be co-inventors, and co-Invisible Kids, which appears to be something Bendis was considering for his Legion, suggesting at one point that both Lyle and Jacques were present at different times (one calling himself 'Invisible Gentleman?').
Kara goes to train at the Legion Academy. Students seem to include:
Dream Girl Triplicate Girl Bouncing Boy Phantom Girl Arms Fall Off Boy (or whatever)
Shadow Lass seems to be running the show.
It seems to be an amalgam Legion of sorts with elements of the Bendis Legion (AA LL, Energy wing Dawnstar) with other elements (Tyroc, Sensor Girl, Danielle COMPUTO)
They seem to be taking this seriously, which is a good thing.

Well, if its any consolation, he's the plot element that gets Superman to take Supergirl to the future, so he's probably not gonna get that much screen time.

We can only hope.
And just to make it clear to people who don't know me that well, I don't object to Batman himself so much as the characterization of him as a know-it-all with poor social skills.
Here's the media release that just went out about the film...

Welcome to the 31st century and the Legion Academy, where a new generation hones their powers with hopes of joining the Legion of Super-Heroes. Devastated by tragedy, Supergirl struggles to adjust to her new life on Earth. Taking her cousin Superman’s advice, Supergirl leaves their space-time to attend the Academy. There, she quickly makes new friends, as well as a new enemy with old ties: Brainiac 5. But a nefarious plot lurks in the shadows – the mysterious group known as the Dark Circle seeks a powerful weapon held in the Academy’s vault. Find out if the budding heroes can rise to the challenge in this all-new DC Universe Movie!
Meg Donnelly (American Housewife) and Harry Shum Jr. (Crazy Rich Asians) lead a star-studded cast as the voices of Supergirl/Kara and Brainiac 5, respectively. Darren Criss (Glee, The Assassination of Gianni Versace), Matt Bomer (Doom Patrol, White Collar) and Jensen Ackles (Supernatural, The Boys) reprise their roles in this ongoing Justice League continuity as Superman, The Flash and Batman, respectively.
The remainder of the robust Legion of Super-Heroes cast features Cynthia Hamidi (FBI) as Dawnstar, Gideon Adlon (Blockers) as Phantom Girl, Ely Henry (Players, Smallfoot) as Bouncing Boy, Robbie Daymond (Critical Role) as Timber Wolf & Brainiac 4, Yuri Lowenthal (He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Spider-Man) as Mon-El, Eric Lopez (Young Justice) as Cosmic Boy & Chemical King, Darin De Paul (Mortal Kombat Legends franchise) as Brainiac & Solomon Grundy, Ben Diskin (Muppet Babies) as Arms Fall Off Boy & Brainiac 2, Victoria Grace (Pacific Rim: The Black) as Shadow Lass, Jennifer Hale (Mass Effect franchise) as Alura, Daisy Lightfoot (Avengers Assemble) as Triplicate Girl, and Zeno Robinson (Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons) as Invisible Kid & Brainiac 3.
Jeff Wamester (Justice Society: World War II) directs Legion of Super-Heroes from a screenplay
And here is a link to the trailer, which is housed on the WBHE YouTube channel:
That looks quite good from the trailer. I like the setting and the setup.
GL I missed Quislet. When was that? Also you listed Tyroc. I didn't see him. There is the head of a figure that resembles him next to Saturn Girl and Cosmic boy at 0:47 but I was assuming that was Lightning Lad in his latest colouration, although the hair is different. Other than that I imagine the other dark skinned figure to be Jacques as Invisible Kid showing his white streak in his hair. Happy to be wrong.
Nice to see the press release nighty. Thanks. Confirms a few of the others. I wondered whether that was Luornu by the colour of her outfit and then she is shown duplicating at 1:01 and thought maybe Duo Damsel but we get the confirmation of Triplicate Girl from the press release. (Also she is shown triplicated on the box cover.)
I always get a little annoyed when Timber Wolf is drawn almost identical to Wolverine (see 1:02) but then what can you do? Seeing him as an instructor could be good.
I am curious to see what they do with the other Brainiacs listed in the credits. Just brief cameos? Probably but might be interesting if they are more.
Looks like Kara will be the focus character which makes sense from a business perspective and that could work well if she is the one through whom we view this world as spectators. She naturally has pride of place on the box art but again interesting to see Brainiac 5 and Mon-El as the other most prominent figures, followed by Bouncing Boy, Triplicate Girl, Dawnstar and Phantom Girl. This is not a picture of just Kara with a few hangers-on so that's good.
As a fan of the Kara/Querl relationship I look forward to the hints towards that from the trailer and his prominence on the cover. Not sure I like his look but you can't have everything. At least his apparent disappointment in the trailer suggest he won't be the cold, emotionless version too often copied from L.E.G.I.O.N.s Vril.
Cautiously optimistic with a little bit of excitement is my reaction.
ooh this looks fun! I like Kara instead of Clark taking centre stage for a change, and that there are so many characters in this trailer - 4 or 5 superheroes isn't a Legion after all
I don't love some of the character designs they've gone with, but the actual animation style is nice so that should make up for it!
OTOH if Brainy's forcefields are gonna look all hexagonny like on the cover image, I am very down with that!
I'm REALLY curious to see how deep they go with the extras - are they going to go into ALL the Legionnaires or just the ones featured in the movie?
I'm listing them here for posterity as the rest of the Internet tends to fall off the face of the Earth now and then...

Legion of Super-Heroes – Special Features
4K, Blu-ray and Digital
The Legion Behind The Legion (New Featurette) – It took a heroic effort from a legion of writers, artists, animators and filmmakers to bring Legion of Super-Heroes to life. In this featurette, filmmakers and stars give us a deep dive into the making of the movie, from the original story idea through character development and final animation.
Meet the Legionnaires (New Featurette) – There are dozens and dozens of Legion members, many of whom are featured in Legion of Super-Heroes. Who made the cut, and why? Lucky for us, the filmmakers are here to introduce us to each one – and give us some background on who they are, and why they’re important to the movie.
Brainiac Attack: The Intellect Behind the Super-Villain (New Featurette) – In Legion of Super-Heroes, Brainiac 5 proves himself to be the pinnacle of all Brainiac iterations, but how did he become that way? In this featurette, filmmakers explain what we should we know about the 4 Brainiacs who came before him, and how – and why – Brainiac 5 chose his own path.
Down to Earth: The Story of Supergirl (New Featurette) – Supergirl’s narrow escape from Krypton and her arrival on Earth is just the beginning of our story (literally). In this featurette, filmmakers explain why they chose to center Legion of Super-Heroes on Supergirl, what the backstory is between her and Superman at the start of the movie, and what exactly is going on between her and Brainiac 5.

Quislet is in the classroom scene - it's just to the left of Dream Girl.
Tyroc is one of the holo statues near the front where you have Tyroc, Kid Quantim (Jazmin Cullen edition) and what is either Karate Kid or possible Vi.
(The rear most statues are the founders, Sensor Girl and Ferro are shown flying, then in front of them are the three above, then before them is Wildfire)

Wow, I kept looking back through it for those three, but was staring too much at the frame at 47 seconds in which just shows the Founders, Sensor Girl and Ferro Lad, not the three in front! Stoked to see Jasmin and Tyroc at least recognized, and it not to be 100% just the up-to-Dawnstar, no one later, Legion that tends to appear in most continuities.
Stone Boy is a neat trainee choice and while I'm not the hugest fan of Arms-Fall-Off Boy, Gunn's Suicide Squad has at least made him a bit more recognizable, and it wouldn't be the Legion without one or more whacky unexpected supers like Matter-Eater Lad, with the sorts of powers that never make it onto most lineups. (Although the Legion has always had some less common choices, like super-intelligence or triplication/multiplication or bouncing powers, which most games faithfully reproduce, but sure don't show up much on the marquee teams like the Justice League or Avengers...)
Kara/Supergirl has a rough run – witnessing the destruction of her home planet, battling an armed Solomon Grundy, and generally struggling to fit into life on Earth. But that’s just the start of her adventure in LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, the latest DC Universe Movie, coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack and Digital starting February 7, 2023 from Warner Bros. - LOSH – SG-Bouncing Boy-Mon-El
Bouncing Boy, voiced by Ely Henry (Players, Smallfoot), offers a little unsolicited insight to Supergirl, while Mon-El watches during an early scene in Legion of Super-Heroes. Supergirl is voiced by Meg Donnelly (American Housewife, The Winchesters), and Mon-El is voiced by Yuri Lowenthal (He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Spider-Man).

- LOSH – SG-Invisible Kid
Invisible Kid makes sure he’s very visible to Supergirl as they have their opening introduction in Legion of Super-Heroes. Zeno Robinson (Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons) voices the always entertaining Invisible Kid, while Supergirl is voiced by Meg Donnelly (American Housewife, The Winchesters).
- LOSH – SG-Arms Fall Off Boy
The ever-popular Arms Fall Off Boy demonstrates his unique powers for Supergirl in a scene from Legion of Super-Heroes. In the distance, (from left), Mon-El, Invisible Kid, Bouncing Boy and two-thirds of Triplicate Girl watch the young Legionnaire introduce himself. Arms Fall Off Boy is voiced by Ben Diskin (He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Muppet Babies, Digimon Adventure), and Supergirl is voiced by Meg Donnelly (American Housewife, The Winchesters).
these scenes are cool... is that Dawnstar using tracking powers, or did they make her like that other animated Dawnstar with light powers? (tracking powers also make sense in the context that some Legionnaires are missing)
And Invisible Kid - love seeing Jacques be a bit flirty lol
I think I could come around to bright wing Dawnstar eventually, I can definitely see why they'd go that route for animation instead of using natural wings that are less flashy visually.
It may be in my head but I feel like artists have been drawing Jacques hotter since the retroboot and I am not complaining...I really like his look here!
Part of me feels a bit cynical about racebent Triplicate Girl...as a general practice I am 100% onboard with diversifying predominantly white casts, but it just feels like a bit of a "throw it at the wall and see what sticks" approach if they're just gonna pick a random character/s to do it with in every different incarnation of the team, especially when a bunch of POC or POC-coded characters already exist that aren't being used. This is what's gonna happen when no creative staff ever look beyond the 80s for inspiration though I guess!
Saw the movie and liked it. No matter which version of the Legion you like, even Bendis, there is something here for you. I wish they would go this way with the Legion in the comics.
Unlikely allies Supergirl and Brainiac 5 ultimately lead their young Legionnaire teammates into a battle with the Dark Circle and its mysterious leader in LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, the latest DC Universe Movie, available to own Digitally and on 4K Ultra HDTM Blu-ray Combo Pack and Blu-rayTM on February 7, 2023.

Meg Donnelly (American Housewife, The Winchesters) and Harry Shum, Jr. (Everything Everywhere All At Once, Crazy Rich Asians) provide the voices of Supergirl and Brainiac 5, respectively.
- LOSH – Brainiac5 shielded

- LOSH – SG-red cloud-1

Brainiac 5 may be the universe’s only 12th Level intellect, but he still can’t fly – and that’s where Supergirl comes in handy -- in an all-new official clip from LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES. "I am the LEGION--you colossal Jerk!"--Garth Ranzz LEGION #63
I watched it. A lot of mixed feelings about it. I think if we were getting a lot of really strong ongoing Legion material, I'd probably be really critical of some of the decisions in it, but as it is... well, I liked it a lot more than I did Bendis?
The plot was very predictable, and the mix of characters used for Academy students gave it a bit of "written by ChatGPT" kind of feel to it, but there were some pretty neat references to established Legion lore along the way. I especially liked Dawnstar/Kara as roommates, which was a subtle nod to Dawny being roommates with Laurel Kent in the old days. I also really liked the depiction of Phantom Girl's powers, though I wasn't big on her being described as "shy".
The tone overall wasn't at all what I would have gone for. I found the use of a twenty-first century curse word by one of the characters annoyingly jarring. I guess it's aimed at teens? It definitely didn't seem suitable for kids but the storytelling wasn't really sophisticated enough to be aimed at adult viewers.
I'm glad I watched it, and glad it exists, and I hope maybe it can recruit some new Legion fans, but I'm not exactly going to be clamoring for a sequel featuring this version of the team.

I don't know if it is or not (I won't get to see this until next week) but I'm going to pretend that the blue and black floating guy underneath Atmos in the picture is Flederweb.
On the whole, I am entirely in favor of re-imagining and re-imaging old heroes and old stories in new ways. But why did they have to swap out the iconic Floyd Belkin look for a Jimmy Olsen look-alike?

There is one plot point most Legion fans will loathe--but that could be explained away by the fact that the questionable character already has an established weak-willed doppleganger...
Indeed, your referenced plot point was among my main gripes, but thanks for pointing this out, I forgot about the "weak-willed doppleganger", good way to rationalize it. It doesn't upset me quite as much because I very much doubt his version of Legion will be continued (though watch this be the time if finally is...), but then that is not a good sign..
So overall, while I enjoyed watching this, I was disappointed versus what I hoped for . The main reasons being:
--- 1) both the above-referenced plot-point, plus other characterization inconsistencies (Dawnstar has been portrayed in many iterations in a reasonably consistent manner as a regal and dignified persona, here she is the opposite) made this all feel "too different" from any canonical representation of LSH.
--- 2) similarly, the near flip-flop of Legion seniority - Phantom Girl, Chuck, and Triplicate girl as academy recruits, as opposed to being among the most senor members in the comic, whereas we see Power Boy as a full legionnaire in a latter group shot - made this fell like a weird "twilight zone" version of teh Legin (I like Eryk Davis Ester's "ChatGPT" analogy above.)
Exacerbating this is that despite several group shots, I couldn't find key Legionnaires (Star Boy, Sun Boy... someone said they saw Element Lad, I only think I MIGHT have seen him...), while others in the shot were never even members.
---- 3) Arm Fall-off Boy - I love him as pure comic relief, awkward to make him part of the action and a legitimate contributor - takes away any real drama.
---- 4) The title is "Legion of Super-heroes", but the only characters who were at all developed were Supergirl and Braniac 5, the rest were largely bystanders. 20th century Justice Leaguers and Kara's own mother got more attention than any Legionnaire.
Usually, with little to no Legion out there anymore, I root for any incarnation to succeed, but this is one of the few that I hope will not continue (and i guess I am "glad" that I doubt it will). It was still enjoyable to see LSHers in action, and I suppose if it DID continue with more focus on the main team, I might change my mind (esp. if they "fix" issue #1 via the doppleganger), but as it is now, this would rank near last among many recent versions of LSH that have popped up randomly (including the appearances in the last season of "Young Justice")
But to be fair, if otherwise ignored characters are your favorites, I could see being excited by this version "mixing it up" versus the standard "canonical" LSHers. I myself did enjoy Chemical King's primary role, for example (although it took me some time to identify him, at first I thought he was ME lad. (Is it a tooth? No, it's a beaker. ),
So as is almost always the case, "better than i would have feared, not as good as i would have hoped", but this one was a bit heavier on the "not as good as i would have hoped" than other recent efforts. for example, I watched this with my son and right afterward, we watched "Justice Leagus vs. Fatal Five" on HBOMax... SO much better! The point being this latest effort, while definitely better than nothing, ranks near the bottom for me amongst other recent LSH incarnations.
... or how about this much briefer review, Robert Christgau style: - "Legion of Super-Heroes - Relegated to supporting cast status in their own title. Nuff said.".
Exacerbating this is that despite several group shots, I couldn't find key Legionnaires (Star Boy, Sun Boy... someone said they saw Element Lad, I only think I MIGHT have seen him...), while others in the shot were never even members.

this might make you happy: Star Boy and Element Lad are among the Legionnaires in this shot at least!
The use of the final three Adventure Era rectruits (Shadow Lass, Timber Wolf, Chemical KIng) as the "on-duty" Legionnaires I thought was kind of cool choice, but then they didn't really get to do much of anything.
I REALLY enjoyed this movie. It wasn't perfect, but seeing characters I thought I'd never see ever again - even in cameo - told me that the people that made this REALLY care about the Legion. Knowing in advance it was going to be an original take in advance helped me take my continuity nerd hat off and really enjoy the characterizations.
Without a doubt its the best original Legion content we've seen in years.
And yes, I was fine with the plot twist, as it does provided a path for redemption in a future movie, of which I hope there are several. God knows with 40+ Legionnaires there's plenty of opportunity!
PS - Suck it McAvennie! (and Johns, for that matter)
