The TT has a history of kewl covers, since Nick Cardy did so many of them. Here's one of my very favorites:

It's easily one of my favorite covers of any comic ever. SPOOKY! DYNAMIC! I can almost feel the water splashing my face.

Bet they're wishing Aqualad was with them at that point.
I miss great cover art like this.

It's Lilith and yes her hair (AND boots, BTW) is micolored on the cover (but colored correctly inside).

After reading the 70s TT revial and learning there were a boatload of old Titans and going back-issue bin diving, I bought this issue on the sheer power of the cover alone.

Cardy was hands-down one of the best cover artists of all time in comics history. What a great cover!
And is it okay if I pretend Donna is actually laying on my bed like that?

Too bad that cover had the cast border around it. Diminishes the effect.

TT # 42 was one of the first comics I ever bought--predating even the Legion by a few months.
Yes, the cover is awesome--and I actually like the border. DC and Marvel both used borders in the early '70s, and I thought they created a striking effect. The frame made the main art stand out while the dramatis personae on the left told you who was who. As a kid who recognized the Titans from their cartoon series, I was immediately drawn in by this instant identification.
As for the story itself, it's been years since I read it, but I remember it being very cool. Giant beetles and salamanders, a trip to the Yucatan on a raft, and Donna getting bitten by a snake (shades of True Grit!) made it a harrowing adventure.

I have that issue. Love it and the cover! (Though Lilith's blonde hair bugs!) This was the first issue of Teen Titans I ever bought (or rather was bought for me by my sister) and features another awesome Nick Cardy cover - http://www.comics.org/issue/25520/cover/4/?style=default (I'm not sure how to post the image directly to the thread but maybe someone else can do the honours.) The story is majorly Mal-centric but for some sad reason he didn't make the cover. These are my favourite two Cardy covers though - http://www.comics.org/issue/23885/cover/4/?style=default http://www.comics.org/issue/24149/cover/4/?style=default The first is so awesomly creepy and the second has fantastic composition as well as being exciting and (of course) Mal-centric.

It's been a long time since I've read the issue but I don't remember there being many Wicker Man allusions going on in it.
I think the guy with the dogs in the background was the ghost of some 18th century slave-hunter who set his sights on Mal when the team stopped over in some Southern back-woods town. As I recall, the doll was some kind of spirit-golem thing built by the slaves to protect themselves from him.
I remember it being quite a cool, creepy issue.

Starfire's not the only one having a good time getting her rocks off. Check out Robin riding that enormous, uh, rock. Yeeh-haw!
And Donna's doing the whole auto-erotic asphyxiation thing. Kinky! And pretty much what I'd expect of a woman who carries bondage gear onto the battle-field, tying those bad-boys up with her 'magic lasso.' [If only she had a magic paddle to 'spank the evil out of them.' I'd be a super-villain in a stone-cold second! Punish me, Mistress Donna! I've been baaaad!]

Dialogue aside, I do think that's an awesome cover (Nick Cardy again?). It draws the reader's eye in and is full of exquisite detail. The figures look human and heroic; they have none of the cartoony exaggerations that characterize comic book art these days. Every detail--even Speedy's cap--conveys a sense of power, and the coloring complements the picture instead of overwhelming it.

It's funny that Harlequin is shown up in the headshots, but Bumblebee replaces her in the lineup on the cover.
I might have had this one as well. Is this Garfield's first appearance as a Titan? Cool, if so.
Golden Eagle is one of my favorite third-string Titans that went nowhere. I think I just like his visual ('cause his powers ain't all that).

I never understood adding Hawk & Dove though. But yeah, that's a groovy line-up!

Gosh! I haven't seen that cover in forever. Definitely an excellent one!
And just think - how awesome would it be if you actually knew George Perez and he wrote you letters with awesome drawings like that on them!

I like it because this is when Wally's parents are a nice normal couple and not a Manhunter and an alcoholic.

Is that a rock Wally's holding?
I don't remember the story at all, but it is a great cover. (Love the postscript!)

Somehow, when I try to draw illustrations to go in my letters, they never turn out that pretty.

No wonder Wally needed money. He had hired George Perez to illustrate his family correspondence.

[/b]That's what I thought too, but I don't know why he'd be holding one when apparently using a pen.

George Perez can of course do no wrong but I prefer the more 'story' oriented style covers that he does to this very static one.
It's well drawn/painted but not one of my faves of his. The cover of NTT #1 (vol. 1) is almost exactly the same but does the job better too I think.

I remember LOVING this cover. I still do although looking at it now, it had flaws.
Even so, a great way to begin the Baxter series.

Nice cover. I recently reread the whole Trigon saga and didn't care for it at all. A lot of Wolfman's old TT stories didn't age well for me.

The cover looks very "staged," particularly Nightwing's pose.

Certainly not one of my favorite group splash covers. Seems a little unfinished.

This thread begs the question, "Was there ever a bad Teen Titans cover?"

They're totally fighting!
Terra obviously made all those earth-monsters!
And see how Black Lightning is about to jam a ligntning bolt right into Raven's face? She's all like 'Nooooo...'
And Katana just totally made snake-sushi out of Garfield, check out that weapon arc!

They fought in the issue ... The New Teen Titans half of the cross over IIRC ... until Terra recognized her brother ... in the same costume no less ... and then had some splaining to do since she told Gar she made her costume herself.
I find this cover especially delicious! mmmmm

The only Batman I ever really enjoyed (besides the Sixties "mod" version, of course) was the one in the Outsiders book. So glad Katanna is still around with the Birds. She was fab, too.

Cleome, I, too, love Katana.
The scene in an issue of Batman & the Outsiders where she comforts Halo with a lullaby is one of the most beautiful and moving things I've ever seen in a comic book.

A lot of Wolfman's old TT stories didn't age well for me. Sad to say, same for me. I found that a lot of his battles weren't all that exciting. But I still find a lot of his stories golden, such as the Judas Contract, the Trigon story, and Crisis on Infinite Earths.

I couldn't come up with anywhere else to post this, so....
I just re-read New Teen Titans #7 (the pre-Baxter series that went to being DC's #1 book). It took me the better part of a half hour to read. Why? Because it had sooo much stuff packed into a single issue. We had the re-forming of the Fearsome Five, the rescue of Psion from limbo, the taking (by the Five) of Titans Tower, the capture of the mysterious secret resident of the tower by the Five, the Titans (remember them) returning from Azerath and forgiving Raven for past deceptions, offering her a home in the process, Cyborg expressing reservations about same, the Titans returning to the tower to find it breached, a big battle with the Five, Cyborg learning that the secret resident/designer of the tower was his dad and that his dad was dying, Cyborg and his dad spending the last three months of dad's life together and finally developing a relationship, almost too late.
These days that one story would be spread out over a year's worth of books, at least. And they wonder why sales are down.
First comic books ever bought: A DC four-for-47-cents grab bag that included Adventure #331. The rest is history.

I have "new" NTT comics to read and I have The Hermit to blame------I mean thank. After his mention of NTT 7, I had to go check my box to see if I had it. See, I came into the Titans a few years into the W/P era, and it has only been in the last 10 years or so that I've filled in the earliest issues. I picked them up on the cheap as I ran across them in bargain bins, but I think some of them got filed without being read. I have all except for 1 and 2, but I have the Tor paperback with reformatted b&w reprints of the first 3. I think it's time for a read/re-read of the first year....
BTW Herms, you a Titans fan in general, or is it the black cover background thing?

I was going to say kind of, but when I looked up old issues I realized that I actually had been a Titans fan pretty much from the start, having bought the original Showcase and B&B issues and several early issues of the first series as well.
I think I was dead center in the target audience for the original series, because every time I started to feel like I was outgrowing it, they matured the characters and storylines and kept me buying the book. I had a crush on Lilith when they introduced her and stuck with the entire original run from that point on. I also remember the whole Titans East-West thing in the late 70s, and was on board for the entire standard-format New Teen Titans run in the early 80s. I finally lost interest when Perez left the series and really haven't been able to get into the group since.
Guess that makes me a former fan.

I moved on to other things around the time Perez left too. Since then I've read some earlier (SA, 70s) stories and some of the later Titans incarnations too, but nothing compares. I don't know if anything can; that era was my own personal Golden Age, and the Titans were the reason I joined the party in the first place.

They were going to split them off again weren't they, just before Perez came back? Cyborg would move out West. Possibly Changeling for the movies.

One of my favorits Teen Titans covers of all time, if not my favorite. One of my favorite Titans covers ever. I think this was the first TT story I ever read. But shouldn't Robin's collar have come off with his cape? And I never noticed the black border before.

Peebz, thanks for sharing that series of covers featuring Kole. Alas, poor Kole, we only knew her for such a short time...
She was featured on at least 3 of the covers of COIE too!
Sigh. She'll always be a member of MY ideal Titans team.

I was getting the news stand Titans so I think she was dead before I saw her in a Titans title. That kind of took the loss out of it for me
