Jeepers H. Tutu! I'm writing TEEN TITANS-- DC's hottest seller and I'm also going to write CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS which will pretty much be THE event of the millennium! I should kill off one of my castmembers... but I don't WANNA!
I know!! I'll CREATE A NEW MEMBER, make her interesting, with the worst parents EVER and stuff and then I'll KILL HER IN THE CRISIS since she isn't a *REAL* Titan anyway and she's silly.
Kole deserved better than this.

Kole is the Titans version of Ferro Lad.

For me, the difference is Ferro Lad got very little screen time before his death.
We spent MULTIPLE ISSUES getting to know the troubled Kole before Wolfman offed her in Crisis.

True. Most of Ferro Lad's development came after he died.

What were the alternatives, then, if SOMEONE had to die?
Have Kole but have her be dull and then croak?
Knock off one of the longer-term Titans? Whom do you suggest?

He should've killed Aqualad.

Here's MY suggestion: NO ONE had to die.
And if you want to be REALLY daring... YES, off a long-termer. Let's leave the KOLEs of the world alone for a change and off one of the ROBINs.

We all know how well Donna's death was received in a big Event Comic.

It occurs to me the fact the people care so much about Kole after so long a time means Marv did his job. His job was to make fans care about a character who literally was a throwaway.

'Sides, Donna ain't dead. She is very clearly shown as alive at the end of that mini and will be brought back easily soon enough.
LILITH was the true victim of that miniseries.

As much as I also loved Kole (her costume, her hairstyle, her powers... her wanton sexuality!) and was saddened to see her die so quickly during the Crisis, I don't hold this against Marv. Quite the opposite in fact. I thought he did a great job of introducing a character whose light shone so briefly and yet so brightly with the team that so many people are still trying to get her brought back to life now, 20 years later.
And I also have no problem with the fact that she was 'created to die'. Crisis obviously needed a high-body count for whatever reason and as LYL suggested 'Who were the alternatives'? We already lost both Aquagirl and Dove I (who were both big faves of mine!). I don't think I could've handled losing any more early Titans. Much better to lose someone I'd only been liking for a short time rather than someone I had known for so long that I could remember dressing up as and pretending to be as a 10 year-old (as was the case with Aqualad and Speedy!).
... Hmmm, speaking of Kole like this has made me start to wonder if an 'Ultimate DC' wouldn't be such a bad thing after all? Imagine if we got to see a re-booted Titans-verse whever people like Kole and Aquagirl and Dove I really got to shine! That would be Hell cool!
Oh, and I totally agree about Lilith being the real victim of Graduation Day! I so hope that whatever weird planet Donna was on at the end of that series that Lilith is there too, and that when they come back its together.

Lilith was my biggest tragedy, she was like Raven, except less gloomy.

Personally, I'm not bothered about Kole - although I agree it was a bit cheeky of marv to refuse to kill one of his own ""proper" characters when he was so merrily offing other peoples works of genius. (Killing Huntress was a terriblle idea - couldnt he have just kept Earth 2 how it was?)
Seeing as how the regular Titans book went down the toilet a couple of years after Crisis I reckon he could have killed Raven instead and no one would have missed her.

Crisis 11-12 was originally supposed to be History of the DCU, and the fade to white at the end of #10 would have been The End. With Superman #1, Batman #1, Green Lantern #1, Legion #1, etc the next month, starting from Day One.

I think a full reboot would have been far superior to the patchwork of partial reboots we got.

Me too, I had to read up on her but she was so great, and if you kill Raven, first you'll be upset, and then you'll be like, "she's coming back, she always does."

Hey maybe in the next upcoming reboot Kole can appear as Crystal Kid's girlfriend. They could be a crime-fighting duo.

I only ever saw Kole in Crisis but I saw enough to be impressed. I just figgered her for a character that had been introduced during my long hiatus from comics reading. She died as a hero, saving lives till the end.
I think some time though I am in the minority in that I wish they would stick to their guns and if a character is dead then, unless it really is part of a properly crafted story arc, he/she should remain dead, no matter what the fans say.

Oh and as far as i can tell, in fiction there is a real need for Cannonfodder lads and lasses to give a story a sense of tragedy, drama or even just plain old excitement

Wasn't Kole created because Wolfman didn't want to kill Lilith?
I thought I had read that somewhere.

It was never actually revealed whether that really was Kole or not in Team Titans.
Apparently the writers had intended it to be her but since the series got cancelled before they had the chance to tell her story she (along with a number of other unexplained plot points from throughout the series) were all revealed in the final issue to be just tools that the Team Titans benefactor/manipulator (Monarch) had used to test them/mess with their minds/whatever it was he was trying to do.
As much as I liked Kole I'd actually prefer that she stayed dead. I feel that her death (like that of Jericho, Terra I and Aquagirl) is one of those ones that is too important to Titans lore to change. I don't begrudge her fans their wishes to see her brought back though and best of luck to them. I know I've got my own hobby-horse character that I won't sleep until I've seen brought back from the dead <cough> GIM ALLON! <cough>.
