Boss had me working pickups for 4 hours. Finally got lunch...got rid of lunch. Store Mgr went home, Asst Store Manager promptly walks in and says to go home, so I don't get anyone else sick.

Gotta love bosses.

Man, barfin' sucks!

Seriously, people have been calling out at my place left and right. Problem is, when people call out habitually, it's hard to be sure if they're on the up-and-up. Some of them you just know they're blowing off most of the time.

It's a fine line to learn as a boss. As a general rule of thumb, the guys who perform well aren't gonna call out unless they really have to. The ones who don't will blow off any time the mood strikes. Sometimes, it's not that cut and dry, though. If someone's at work and clearly badly under the weather, I never require them to stay or threaten their jobs.

Me? It takes a LOT for me to call out. I work with horrific colds/borderline flus all the time. I guess we all know our limits, and they're different for different people.

I'm not defending your store manager at all, Dev. Just lending some perspective.

Very true. I can respect that it is a fine line to tread as a manager. The thing is, don't take out the things some people do on the ones that do not abuse the system. It is true that I had to leave early last Sunday, but that was due to both my kids being sick and having nobody to watch them for my wife to go to work. Her job is who we have insurance through right now.

Like I said in another thread, I do not have a problem bringing in a Dr. note when I am sick, it's the attitude in which it was requested.

The thing was...everyone at work was keeping distance from me, because of hoe I looked. The coughing fits that would bend me over were no fun either.

The thing is, I deal with the public...it's a retail store, and not exactly what I want to see someone carrying something to my car hacking up a lung all over the place.

When I came in today and handed him the note from the clinic yesterday, he asked if I was feeling better. This is where my temper showed a bit, but I had a point to make. I said no...which was 100% true, and that I would never ever call in again.

The last time I called off was in Oct...I had a 101 fever and had actually gotten the damn bug from my boss. He got all attitude then as well.

Not sure what his problem is, he seems to be all over the charts with the way he deals with things...

Not trying to tit-for-tat you Lardi...just venting.

I am a manager in a call center. I deal with people calling in all the time, so I understand that sometimes things happen, especially when it isn't just you and kids are involved.

However, I have a peer (another manager) that I know has missed almost 6 or 7 weeks in the last year or so. There was the week she threw out her back, the second week she threw out her back, when she learned that her daughter had gotten into a fight (6 months earlier). Normally, I don't pay much attention to that sort of thing, but when she misses, my job gets that much harder. I understand that things happen, but some people seem to treat their job as the place to go as long as everything is working right, not as a priority. And I don't think that is right, especially if you are a manager.

Of course, I am a manager and have to deal with this kind of thing all the time. Right now, I'm struggling with what to do with two ladies who call out entirely too often. One has had a lot of hardships over the past year. The other is just very sickly; you can look at her and see it. Both do a terrific job when they come in, but it's rare during any given week that one, the other are both don't call out.

It's funny, but both balk any time I suggest cutting them back a shift, yet neither rarely ever takes home a full two-week schedule's worth of pay on any given paycheck.

It doesn't help at all that I'm a big softy and not very bosslike at all. But for business purposes, unless something changes for the better, I'm very likely going to have to hire on more help, cut their hours and weed them out that way. It's not what I want to do, but there's only so much I and the other more reliable employees can take. The absences are just way beyond the realm of reasonability at this point.

Again, this is no comment on Dev's story, but his just brought out a situation at my work that I've been dealing with.

Most of us are trained to interpret the scaling back of hours as a harbinger of being fired, or as an invitation to quit and spare the employer the headache of dealing with our Unemployment paperwork later.

My nerves are scraped raw after almost two years of failing to find regular work, and I've read about this kind of thing on local boards far too often. Oh, the joys of 12% joblessness!

I should be buying you ginger beer then.

It's gotten to the point where I wait until the very end of the required period to scout around for the required number of jobs per week. It's just so effing humiliating after a while, knowing that you could just send the recipient ten LOLCat attachments or random words from the dictionary and not significantly alter the chances of your resume being read or acknowledged on the other end. All an early-in-the-week search accomplishes is a chance to be enraged and depressed earlier in the week than Friday.

I applied for a job I temped at, and didn't even get an interview. It was several years ago, and I worked several jobs at a Community College near me. You'd think I'd at least get a little something by having done the job...but no.

Yup. It's kind of sad that I practically kiss the screen during the rare times that somebody takes five seconds to write, "Sorry. We looked at your resume, but decided to go with somebody who's not a complete LOSER, Loser!"

Boy, boy, crazy boy!
Stay loose, boy!
Breeze it, buzz it, easy does it.
Turn off the juice, boy!
Go man, go,
But not like a yo-yo schoolboy.
Just play it cool, boy,
Real cool!

While I understand that Chile had better infrastructure and the insurance industry was heavily involved in providing coverage there, I don't understand why Chile's earthquake has basically gotten no media coverage and the Haiti earthquake was news you couldn't escape from if you tried. Besides those two things I mentioned, why the huge difference in media coverage?

Yeah I was pretty lucky when I moved here...My parents gave me the money to make the move and one of my aunts already lived here, and let me stay with her till I got on my feet and found my own place.

If it weren't for that I'd probably still be unemployed in Newfoundland.

It's precisely because of one following almost right on the heels of the other, I think.

Antarctica contains about 90 percent of the world's ice and 70 percent of its fresh water. Antarctica is covered with ice an average of 7,000 feet thick. If all of the Antarctic ice melted, sea levels around the world would rise about 61 meters (200 feet). But the average temperature in Antarctica is -37C, so the ice there is in no danger of melting.

shrug I think Shooter did her a lot of harm in his Eighties run. Some other people actually wrote her as a pretty courageous and thoughtful character. Not, as somebody once described Shooter's version, "A bouncing bikini babe in fur."

DeMatteis kept her jokey side in Marvel Team-Up, but still tried to remember that her backstory was actually kind of somber. I guess a lot of the writers after Shooter followed his lead, though.
