I noticed that a new rules page has shown up when I tried to log in tonight, and I assume everyone else has gotten it too!

I just wanted to ask...does the board need to be toned down? Or is this a natural progression? Have things been out of hand, or is this a decision a long time in the making?

(I hope the tag threads aren't too bad!)

Yes. Things are getting out of hand. This Message Board is intended for a General audience. Even though there isn't a censor in place. I would hope that people could remember that this is a message board about a comic and can be and should be accessed by underage individuals. A little self-censorship would be nice. No "x-rated" or swear words in titles, at least.

Understood loud and clear smile !

The tag threads have been knownn to get a bit too intense, so I'll be sure to make sure that they don't cross the line!

No. For some unknown reason, the having the rules at log in option was banning Stu and his IDs. So it's been turned off.

I have a thought about that now - STU, are you running any anti-banner ad/anti-user tracking/similar programs?

My views are my own and do not reflect those of everyone else... and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Hmmm...maybe. But after the chat. I redid the rules option and then saw that 3 or 4 of his ID's would automatically show up as banned. It's definitely weird and something that I'll look into.

It'd be nice if, just once, for a change, as a lark, a topic like this was taken seriously, rather than devolving into another flirting-fest *sigh*

Will the major LMBP tag-team threads, both filled with entertaining but nonetheless sexual events, thus be edited? (Or have they been already?) Should moderators be proactive about doing so, or do Gary and Scott want editing for content left solely to them?

I note that it seemed too urgent to warrant any warning to the authors involved to edit, say, condolence threads a short while back *rueful half-smile* ... does removing descriptions of sexual acts warrant a warning?

Um...please no one edit the LMBP tag threads smile . I'll let them fall off the page first!

And wait a minute...Stu and his ID's being banned by accident and Gary unbanning him? Shouldn't it be the opposite wink !

Pov's truckstop pickups lol ! At least it's not the Stu/Dolly the Sheep/Richard Nixon tapes that they found at Watergate!

I wonder if Gary does anything else to the board if Stu will be banned? Maybe after months of banning him, Legion World itself (as a living computer entity) has taken a life of it's own in banning Stu?

Or maybe it is the farm porn on his computer?

Getting back to the subject matter...

I don't know. All I can say is, I felt things had been getting out of hand of late and after discussing it with the other Worlders, issued the new rule (written by them mostly).

Like all things here, I'd prefer members to be vigilant of their own posts and choice of words. I still need to ponder all of this though.

My two credits, while I can afford them.

I would only edit thread titles (like Lardy's announcement of being back) that are obvious. For threads that contain explicit material currently I would just make sure that the subject line makes note of it and start them over within the standards, when possible, in a new thread.

I would prefer not to have to police everyone since, for the most part, we are a civilized group. Plus I'm going to be absent a lot during the daylight hours due to major work headaches and I don't think it fair for Gary to have to watch over the board when he should be sleeping.

Hit and run posts will be all I can do for awhile. If I had to take time to read threads for rules violations then why bother even coming in to see what's up?

There does have to be a balance between posting whatever you want and censoring {either by yourself or the board)for "adult" content.

It is difficult, because what one person thinks is OK, another might find inappropriate.

Gary, I was wondering if there could be one forum where access is limited that could become the "adult" forum?

Well, for the tag threads:

I'd really like it if no one went back in and edited posts from two or three months ago. If the thread needs to whither away and drop off page one, so be it, but I'd hate to see the story changed now, destroying the original version.

From now on, I'm totally for writing the threads within the standards of the new rule (and old). Since I post in all the tag threads and am a moderator in the Bits forum, I promise to try and police these as best as I can. Editing should always be a last resort, but I'll make sure that lines aren't crossed, through PM's and email. Likewise, if someone sees something they find totally offensive (although I should already have an eye on this), I'll gladly do whatever it takes to fix it, so PM me (or Grey, Dean or FC, the other modeartors there).

I do read every tag thread though, and since they get a bit long, I'd hate for Scott, Gary or even the other Bits moderators who don't read them to have to constantly police them.

Looks like I missed an important chat!

That was brought up, but I feel that this being based on a comic and all, that it shouldn't be necessary. There are plenty of places and opportunities to be as ranchy as you want to be on the net and even here in PMs if need be. I don't see the need to go all out, when children could and should be enjoying this place along with the adults.

Besides, making a forum private means giving individual permissions to each member. It's not something I really want to spend my online time doing either. And it'd most likely exclude members like IB, which is unfair.

I don't think it's necessary to go back and delete every naughty word or adult act in the existing story threads. I think in those cases it's enough to simply tone it down a little from this point on. Or, if possible, continue the action in a new story thread, perhaps with a link to the original thread in the first post so that people can go back and read what they missed.

As moderator of MMB, I took it upon myself to edit the title of Lardy's "I'm Baaaaaack" thread, since several people had expressed concern about the F-word in it. I then sent a PM to him to explain what I did and why I did it. I also gave him the option of changing my wording of the thread title himself if he had a preference over what I chose.

I knew when Lardy posted that subject that people might raise a few eyebrows. But knowing Lardy, he would have gladly changed it the second someone told him that it made it uncomfortable. He was just extremely excited to be posting here after months of being 'exiled' and only being able to communicate through occasional emails to people.

I think it's good that guidelines are being set, because there are people (like LardLad and I) that can really push the envelope in the things we write, but would never, ever want to offend or make another poster uncomfortable. So now that the board has had a gentle reminder about when to not cross the line, I think the tag threads and other threads will easily adapt. And the PM function on this board is great, since anyone who ever feels that Lardy or anyone has pushed too far can just PM him and let him know. I know that he, and most people here, wouldn't ever take offense to being PMed for something like that and would be more than happy to edit it to make sure everyone is comfortable.

Well, Lardy's original post from when he first joined still stands, F-word and all. I guess the visible presence of a minor among us helps to remind me we are not alone here.

These things don't necessarily offend me, I was a Marine after all, I just like this place to not be on any parents lists of places their children can't visit on the net. Or that creators feel uncomfortable posting here. Or even DC sending us a shut down notice if they feel we're defacing their properties in anyway.

I would second that. Don't assume that the person involved won't listen to your concerns or try to address them. Try saying something!

Please, I would ask, talk to the person involved first about concerns with a specific posting. And only then to a moderator. And only then to the overworked Gary and Scott.

And lest anyone feel this is a Lardy issue, remember that I\'ve been concerned about this long before Lardlad\'s return.

I think most of us have been guilty of taking things a bit far at times (even me), this is just a plea for us all to be more aware that we're open to the general public and not just a bunch of friends hanging out and swapping stories. It's easy to forget sometimes.

And I'm just beating this dead horse again, to say this isn't about one or two people. I don't want anyone to feel singled out.
