Either Katee Sackhoff or Dirk Benedict if you are a purist.

In Legion terms, I think that translates to Ayla or Ultra Boy

We can even say this unidentifiable guy on the cover is a random crew member!

Hmm... I bet that's the Legionverse equivalent of Ahab's creepy harpooner guy!

No. I think Queequeg was Starbuck's harpooner. I mean the creepy Persian guy Ahab kept hidden until he revealed his own crazy plot to go out in the boat and hunt the whale himself!

That's not the same whale that swallowed Jo is it?
Or are we talking two different space whale species?
How many space whales does one need??

You can never have too many species of space whales.

Jo was swallowed by an Ultra-Energy Beast, not a space-whale. Pre-Crisis, at least.

And the Super-Moby Dick of Space wasn't really a space-whale at all, but a Dxaundii wingfish, grown to gigantic size.

Superboy is Starbuck, trying to be Ahab's conscience. The bubble helmet fella looks like he escaped the ship being eaten by Moby Dick, so he must be Ishmael.

Every time I see this cover, I snicker at Superboy proclaiming "You can't kill it! You know we Legionnaires never take life!" Yeah, right. Tell that to Zaryan rotting in his grave.

I love the Silver Age.

Isn't the guy in the spacesuit Ultra Boy? Didn't he wear the spacesuit because he could not be invulnerable and use his other powers?

It's been years since I read the story, but I remember him being swallowed by the whale and flashing back to being swallowed by the ultra-energy beast. Then Jo jams his flashlight into the Super Moby Dick's cavity in order to make the whale open its mouth so he can escape.

I sheepishly concede the same. I honestly just have no interest, unless someone gives me the review to end all reviews to peak my interest.

The Super Moby Dick of Space story, however, is classic!

Great Scott! How can you guys *not* have read Moby-Dick?

As far as I'm concerned, it makes up for like half that stuff in the Why the Rest of the World Hates Americans thread.

Does it even make up for all that stuff Nathaniel Hawthorne inflicted on us? Because once I read his works, I pretty much skipped the rest of my American Lit classes in college--they were that painful! Reading Goodman Brown was like going to the dentist.

I actually haven't read any Hawthorne other than The Scarlet Letter, which I didn't think was that bad, but Moby Dick blows it out of the water.

Though I have to admit when I read it at sixteen, I thought it was a complete waste of time. It wasn't until I re-read at 23 or so that I fell in love with it.

Hmm... come to think of it, it's about time to re-read it again!

If you like "The Super Moby Dick of Space" (which is a classic!) then you'll appreciate it even more after reading "Moby Dick".

Also: Read Edgar Rice Burrough's "Tarzan" and then re-read "The Lone Wolf Legionnaire". Read "Mutiny on the Bounty" (it's a trilogy) and then re-read "Mutiny of the Legionnaires".

Agatha Christie's "10 Little Indians", Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" will also remind you of other Legion adventures.

There's a "Lone Wolf Legionaire"/"Tarzan" connection? I must check that out! I'm thinking I may have a whole new perspective on Timber Wolf coming out of this!

That reminds me that I've never actually watched Stalag-17.

Jeepers! I must check out all of these! I've never read Mutiny or Tarzan! I feel so plebian!

Is Stalag-17 the film that 'Super Stalag of Space' is based on?

Yeah, two of my favorite things, The Super-Stalag of Space and Hogan's Heroes, are both derivative of Stalag-17!

Moby Dick is the greates American novel. Seriously. You should read it, Cobalt Kid.

If that's not enough to convince you, consider this: it not only inspired a kick-ass Legion tale, but without it, we would not have the awesomeness that is Robert Shaw in "Jaws."

Nah. (no pun intended)
Jo wouldn't be caught dead in yellow pants.

The childhood friend Exnihil never had.

I just checked my tattered copy of 100-PAGE SUPER SPECTACULAR DC-21 (Oct. 1973), which reprints "The Super Moby Dick of Space" -- and yes, it's Ultra Boy.

From the caption on Page 53:

"At this moment, Ultra-Boy, who can switch his ultra-energy into any single super-power, is using it for super-speed ..."

The two-page scene then proceeds as I described it, above.

Maybe yellow spacesuit pants were the latest fashion in 2965.

"Captain Ahab of Space" by Virgil Finlay from 1957. Possibly an inspiration for the Super Moby-Dick of Space?

Just how is Dxaundii pronounced, exactly? I've always assumed it's "Duck Sunday."

Still "Fickles" to my friends.

My assumption was similar but slightly different - "Dooks Orndee".

There is a recent computer game designed as a sequel of sorts to Moby Dick called Nantucket. You play as Ishmael who, after a few years, cannot free his own mind of his experiences and sets out to be whaler himself. It is an interesting game that I quite enjoy.

Was that Captain Ahab of Space a story or just artwork?

(The April 1957 issue of Galaxy had an actual whale on the cover, but that was under the ocean.)

As far as I can figure out, there's just the artwork.
