I used to have some Whitman version comics from the seventies and i just saw some for sale on Ebay. Hadn't thought about that in years.

Does anyone know anything about it? If you do I would love a rundown. Was it just a company that bought reprint rights?

Thanks.

My understanding is that Whitman was a Canadian company that had the rights to publish the DC line in Canada. I've run across them a few times. If I'm not mistaken, most times it was in those three for one plastic wrapped comicbook sets that you could often find on sale at stores like K-Mart etc.

ah, the good old Whitman comics. They turned up frequently in supermarket/convenient store 3-packs. Many were grab-bags, sorted for no particular reason; the middle comic would be a mystery. Unfortunaltey, the first 6 Star Wars issues were packaged that way, in 2 labelled 3-packs; thus I got those instead of the more valuable first editions.

The 2nd part of the Earthwar was a popular 3-packer; I've seen numerous Whitman editions of that. In fact, my current copy is one. #248 or 249, too.

The childhood friend Exnihil never had.

Whitman 3 packs were how I got my Legion issues for the first year or so. Once I read an issue of Legion off a spinner rack and bought it, I searched every 7-11, bookstore and drugstore and toy store that I could find comics in for more, and I found me a whole bunch of 3 packs of Legion in the #240s and 250s. Gobbled them up quickly!!! smile

A Whitman 3-pack was how I got my first Legion comic! I didn't know what was coming out of that three-pack, but a (nearly) life-long connection was born.

Why are you laughing at me? It's unkind, as well as puzzling!

Now that I think about it, I think one of my first Legion comics was in a Whitman pack.

The "W" logo in place of the DC Bullet was actually kind of funny. Did they really think they were fooling anyone?

Whitman was the same corporate entity that sold Children's books under the "Little Golden Books" Banner amongst others. They reprinted comics for distribution outside the news stand system. I remember them displayed in the toy departments of the discount department stores back in the day.

May have even bought a few. They were promptly dsetroyed in the reading process.
