Apparently, a number of right-wing, ignorant protestors had something to say over the fact that the Batman, Inc. representative for France is a Muslim.

Maybe it would cheer the racists up to read the list of characters of color that DC has already erased from its universe over the last year or so. Along with Ian Sattler's sorry excuse about how that's totally okay because like we have green and blue and orange aliens in our stories, Guyzzz!

Jeepers! These guys are totally missing the point of the story, which is the symbolism of the spread of American corporate power bringing peace and justice to all of the world!

I wondered about that, too. Batman, Inc.? We don't need to fight terrorists. We'll just buy them out.

To the point of this thread, the Andy Khouri article makes several important points. A Muslim French hero is still a French hero in the same way that a Latino (or even a Muslim!) can be an American hero. And comics are the great equalizer when it comes to presenting the world's ills. Yes, they oversimplify matters to a degree, but they also remind us of the greater good to which all people aspire: anyone can be a hero.

When you're talking about the American brand of Right Wing twit, this argument won't pass muster. I went to a few pro-immigrant rallies back around the time that ICE raids were in the local and national news. I can't even begin to describe the inane and barely coherent gibbering let loose by the local variety of "real" American because a lot of marchers carried --gasp!-- U.S. FLAGS with them at the rally. Why, those filthy, dreadful brown people! What were they doing carrying OUR FLAG?!11

I'm not trying to argue with bigots. I'm just restating something that Khouri already said and which should be obvious, but which perhaps needs to be restated for those who may be swayed by Huston's pseudo-rational arguments.

Can't help with the beer, but I do have some mocha-flavored coffee handy.

After further thought, clearly the only way to make this character acceptable is to introduce a supporting cast of more traditional French characters, such as Ze Poodleman and Mademoiselle Underarm Hair!

... or the theatrically stereotypical Crimson Fox!

I always find this really peculiar when people are talking about immigrants taking their construction jobs or what not. (btw no one complains about 'them' taking our jobs working in the fields ... and as someone who has worked in those fields .... it sucks.)

I hope everyone involved with this Nightrunner character gave themselves a pat on the back because I think he's awesome. It's a shame he's gonna end up being cannon fodder for the next big universal crisis (or whenever they decide to destroy Batman Inc to make Bruce a GRIM DARK AVENGER OF THE NIGHT again), but he's a great character!

Oh, come now. If we keep letting the evil cross-border transgressors pick our veggies, what kind of work will we have left for convicts and for those local juveniles who get tossed into those "boot camps"?
