I've always liked Thundra - she's been soooo under-used throughout her Marvel life
Yes, every time I see her in a book, I pick it up

Loved her in Marvel-2-in-1, and her sparse Avengers appearances

I'm wondering if this Squadron Supreme is worth it... since I'm not picking up too much Marvel right now

Hmmm...

It's drawn by Leonard Kirk, with inks by Paul Neary, and the preview LOOKED great, so I'm giving it at least an issue or two.

Ohhh, Christ!

That was NOT fun!

So they're basically the new Marvel Universe's version of the Authority, and they kill one of Marvel's greatest characters over something that happens in Secret Wars (the final issue of which has been delayed until next month).

Whatever happens with Thundra next issue will determine whether or not I keep reading this.

So... this basically IS Robinson doing Cry for Justice but with Marvel characters.

You think Zarda would've learned after the last time her Squadron tried to take the law into its own hands.

It can't be that bad, surely? I mean, you'd have to be capable of unimaginably terrible writing on purpose if it could happen again. Besides, Fickles didn't start her post with "My eyes! My eyes! make me unsee it!" So, it can't be as bad as Cry for Justice smile

Thoth, LOL

Part of the reason "Cry for Justice" was so appalling to me was because I had genuinely expected it to be good! The blinders hadn't yet lifted from my eyes until the double whammy of "Cry for Justice" and "Blackest Night" finally betrayed DC as the crap factory it had become.

"Squadron Supreme" was free from such lofty expectations thanks to the awfulness of most of what Robinson has written these past several years (I say most because I didn't read the Shade limited series.) Ergo, a more muted reaction from me.

It's sad, though, because even though I've always felt Robinson was a touch overrated, there were a lot of bits of "Starman" that I liked, and I could appreciate the ambition that went into that series. Whatever happened to him after the end of "Starman" really took its toll of his creativity.

I know, right? I would love to buy more issues of Starman than I currently own, but I can't bring myself to actually spend money on them because I just don't feel comfortable spending money on a book that Robinson AND that idiot Harris have worked on.

What I meant by it being "Cry for Justice" is that the premise is a bunch of heroes deciding to be "proactive" instead of "reactive." And that while it's supposed to be seen as "justice" it's really "vengeance."

Also the fact that he is literally using characters who are stand ins for the Justice League.

I know what you mean, but I generally try to separate the creative work from the creator, even though it can often be difficult. That said, if I don't like the creator's work AND I don't like the way he or she comes across in public, all bets are off (see: Keith Giffen.) On the flipside, I can still enjoy good creative work even if I don't like the creator as a person (Barry Kitson snubbed me repeatedly back when he hung around in these forums, but that hasn't affected what I think of his best work.)

LOL

I agree 100%. It's almost like Robinson's saying, "I really can write the JLA, honest, I can. Hey, where's everybody going?"

I have this kind of mental block thing. I feel like the money, in some way, still goes to the creators even if it's a back issue.

Also I was legitimately surprised that the Zarda here is the same one from the Gruenwald book. I'm wondering when she got the new costume.

If it's any consolation, I thought the last third of Starman was a bit of a struggle. Even more so on the issues that Harris wasn't pencilling.

I actually quite liked the year-long outer-space arc of Starman -- I thought Peter Snejbjerg's style was well-suited for it. And after the all-too-aptly named Grand Guignol arc (I'll bet Jonathan Hickman loves that arc, it certainly anticipated his own turgid superhero "epics"), there were a few bright spots amid the last few issues, particularly the one guest-starring Superman.

All of a sudden, a Starman re-read sometime this coming year sounds very appealing to me.

Let me know how it goes. smile

I'll be on a year long time travel trip to all the navel gazing ponderous planets in outer space where I'll foreshadow DC big events like giving Jor-El a SpaceLane map to Earth & doing the catering for Invasion.

After a moody start (first arc), it soon disappeared into the writer Mary Sueing, not one but, most of his cast. So The Mist wipes out a version of the JLE, Jack Knight gets to fool around with Jade (off panel I think, but you've no chance Jack) and the whole police family become annoying pains etc.

lol

I don't entirely agree, but that's a hilarious assessment.

The first arc was actually my least favorite. I thought Jack was a jerk. It caused me not to stay with the series. I read most of it just a few years ago. I still like the outer-space arc the best. smile

"Like all the Starman cast, Mikaal was deeply involved in naval gazing one day. That's when he noticed the shiny thing on his chest. 'What does this do?' he wondered. Well we never find out, because the writer wants to take up the rest of the book making the whole DCU connected to the Starman lineage. What blinded the Bat, making it fly into Wayne Manor?...why it was a Star."

thanks Fickles smile

Wasn't it Robinson that added:-

Captain Marvel + Kate Bush = The Man with the child in his eyes.

Now poor Batson can't do anything without everyone seeing right through him. A writer's insight that escaped a caption box and entered into the dialogue balloons of every character who would meet the poor sap. Gah!

Thanks, Andy.

Thoth, it was actually Morrison, not Robinson. In an issue of JLA, one of Kyle's thought-captions has him calling Captain Marvel "The man with the child in his eyes."

I was thinking there was a Captain Marvel story in Starman. Did I imagine that?

Not that I'm anything but mistaken, but that's where I placed if not the quote, but the fact that everyone could sort of tell it was a kid in there.

Yes, there was a Starman/Power of Shazam crossover. I don't remember much about it, though.

I seem to come across Starman issues all over my comics storage area when I'm looking for things. I must have pulled them out for a re read at some point, never bothered and randomly threw them into boxes. I noticed a few of Gruenwald's Squadron Supreme mixed up too (oooh thread connection). I'm sure I read it in order eventually, but it was after a lot of years.

As I said earlier in this thread, I personally think Gruenwald's "Squadron Supreme: Death of a Universe" graphic novel was better than Gruenwald's "Squadron Supreme" 12-parter.

Issue 2:

Thundra only appeared on the first page.

That's it, I'm finished with this book.

I hope that after it's cancelled, they reteam Kirk & Neary with a decent writer.

Zarda is draining the youth of men to keep herself young and vital.

WHY is it so hard to get a Wonder Woman character who doesn't have a horribly dark secret and acts cold and violent? And yes that includes the ACTUAL Wonder Woman.

Dare I ask how she goes about doing that?

Why yes, I darest. Verily I doth darest. (Just in case Thor guest stars, I'm ready)
