Variety's Joseph Adalian reported today that the DC Comics character The Flash may be the next super-hero to show up on the small screen, courtesy of the WB.

The network has committed to a pilot based on The Flash, written and executive produced by Todd Komarnicki ("Resistance"). A "hefty penalty" has been attached to the project if it is not picked up as a regular series.

Just like Smallille's "no flights, no tights" policy, the red costume will not be seen in the series. This Flash is a young Gothamite (hey, what about Central City?) who just graduated from college. "Once our hero gets his calling, he's given the advice, 'Live fast so others don't die young,' " Komarnicki tells Variety.

The red suit will not be present, and the series will include the recurring element of time-travel.

Warner Bros.' Carolyn Bernstein told Variety that WBTV topper Peter Roth came to the network a few months ago with the Flash - but with a new, added twist involving time travel. "We've been talking internally about doing a 'Time Tunnel'-style show, and this was the perfect way to blend time travel with an established franchise we know is beloved by people who know the comic," she said. (Of course, there is a great franchise out there already with time travel that's not currently being used... I forgot who that Doctor was, though...)

Apparently, instead of a cosmic treadmill, this Flash's power allows him to run so fast he can travel backward or forward in time. "This is a story about a guy who's aimlessly drifting through life and barely moving at the speed of life when he discovers his calling is to move at the speed of life," Komarnicki said.

The show will have self-contained stories in addition to ongoing plot threads. "Every week he'll have a mission, a la Mission Impossible" Bernstein told Variety. "It's a big, fun, adventure series. There's also a mentor character who'll train him, and there's a legacy of Flashes before him." (If the mentor's name is Jay Garrick, we're in.)

"When he's in the future, he's missing his present," Komarnicki said. "He's really giving up his own life to help others."

Like KryptonSite , Gotham Clock Tower , and KnightsPast before it, hopefully this website can keep you updated on the status of the Flash pilot. When we hear anything, we'll post it here. If you happen to be involved with the making of this pilot and would like to talk, please contact us at planetkrypton@aol.com.

I'm not extremely hopeful based on the description, but I guess we'll see what they do with it.

At least with "Smallville", Clark Kent has a mythos that supports his life in Smallville and his days before Superman. This new Flash sounds like something totally different from the comics mythology (as far as I can tell)

It will likely all come down to the finished product.

If it's good, it won't matter how much they veer from the comic.

I'm curious about just what that "hefty penalty" is, though.

Fleah. A Gothamite? I'm not a huge fan of changing oh, everything about a character or book and using the same name. I guess if I was older, I'd have bitched a lot about that newcomer Barry Allen who didn't wear a hubcab like Jay Garrick, the one true Flash...

Sigh.

I wish I wasn't so complex. Or shallow. Or egotistical. Or good looking. Or talented. Wait, where was I going with this?

Back to the topic at hand: I'm not holding my breath for this one. But I've been a sucker for time travel stories, so I'll probably cave and give it a chance.

The premise sounds interesting, but it seems like they were scrambling for a super-hero they could attach to it so they can build up some extra hype. I just wish they hadn't cancelled the original "Flash" series so soon. That show was awesome! Now there's a DVD box set I'd buy.

I just hope that this time around they get an actor who looks like he could actually run fast. I mean, I love John Wesley Shipp as much as the next girl, but please! He looked so big that I couldn't believe he could get out of his own way, let alone run at super-speeds!

Rumor has it John Wesley Shipp was written out of the 'Creek when he and Dawson's real-life relationship got a little too obvious.

I've heard that, too. Though I've also heard he's in a longterm relationship with another Flash, Flash Gordon actor Sam Jones. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't swimming in Dawson's creek, too, I suppose. wink

I believe that James Van Der Beek just got married, so there's no possible way that he could be gay wink

knew about John Shipp's being gay...but Sam Jones?? that's interesting! Too many Hollywood closets.

Anyway, Flash back to TV..I just want to say "yeahhhhhh" but with huge completely different from we know in our heart - Gothamite? What...trying to convert Flash into Batman's gang so can sell more??? sorry I don't buy it. I will try to keep my mind open as when the preview is out for one night...I will watch it and then make a decision.

From reading the description, I can't help but think of "Sliders".... or maybe it'll be like that other new show "Tru Calling"...?

Looks like Drake had a little timeslip there himself. wink

Anyway, I'd like to see if this actually even gets into production. The Starman series has already been put on indefinite hold. Outside of the JLA and Teen Titans toons and Smallville, DC has as much trouble getting projects off the ground on the small screen as they do on the big screen.

But then again, where are the Marvel shows on TV? Just the X-Men Evolution. Any others?

Ah. I knew I was forgetting at least one. Thanks Drake. We only got to see the first couple of episodes before we had our cable turned off.

From The Comic Reel at CBR :

Quote
There were plans at bringing the Scarlet Speedster back to the small screen, but those plans have ground to a dead stop. Our dear friends at Kryptonsite (who also ran a Flash site with the same data) sent us the following: "A friend of mine put in a call to Todd Komarnicki's office and learned that the 'Flash' TV project has a new status: Dead. That would probably explain the lack of casting sides etc. leaking out. I've got an e-mail in to that production office; hoping for some kind of official confirmation, but I'd say 99.5% that the project is dead."
