Today's weight was 191, so I am heading in the right direction.

Not on a "diet" per se, but eating a lot less.

And I know with the con coming up in November, I'll have plenty of incentive to stick with it now!

I participated in my 20th high school reunion festivities all weekend and drank excessively. I'm sure all the calories in that added up to a lot. ALL the food available was GARBAGE, which made me feel like a snob, but also helped me continue to eat lite.

BTW, I had a GREAT time at the reunion. I have a lot more in common with the people from my class now, than I did back then. In fact, I see potential for current friendships that I never would have imagined before.

Uh... back to the topic.... Go to any reunions you can; surely they'll be fun; but don't expect healthy or even delicious food.

Dean, you bring up an interesting point. Why do we do this? Do we do it to feel healthier? Do we do it to improve our mental image of ourselves? Do we do it so that people will be attracted to us? Do we do it because we are becoming more aware of our own mortality and want to forestall it?

I think all these reasons are legitimate, and each of them is a part of why I exercise and watch what I eat. Why do you all do it?

I spent my 20's eating and drinking anything I wanted. I used to live quite a partier's lifestyle at night, but still have the energy to get up in the morning and take care of kids and my home. Oh, and still look GREAT!

So, as I entered my 30's I continued to live this way. How fun, right? Well, the stomach aches and pains and heartburn started to take longer to pass and the fat started to pile on. I didn't even realize... well, I denied it. When I had to have my driver's liscence picture updated, I had a meltdown. I looked like a great big, older man! That wasn't me! This was actually one year ago.

As anyone who's been participating at this thread knows, I began working out and watching my food intake. The benefits began immediately! I had more energy. My stomach didn't hurt as much or as often because I wasn't stuffing a bunch of JUNK into it! I looked a lot better. Ya know how some people actually look cuter with a bit more roundness to their cheeks? That's not me. My confidence increased as I began to feel and look better. I was getting lots of support from friends and family and from here! The only problem with this type of lifestyle is that it's hard (for me)! I have to stay on top of it all the time. So, I'm still trying. I still eat some junky stuff and I still miss workouts; but I still eat well and still get in the gym, too. It's a juggling act.

Lotsa reasons.

I know I'm not a regular poster here, but I should be. 2003 was a great Atkins year for me, lost 40 pounds, but I've gotten lazy and have gained more than half of it back.

I need to renew my efforts, but I just keep putting it of another day.

I'm not too overweight, just have a bit of a pot belly. It's not humoungous, but it makes a big difference on many fronts. To me, it's a big albatross around my neck, in terms of self-image. It hurts my self-esteem, at least in terms of being attractive. I'm not ugly, but not a hunk, so I feel my weeight is -and has been- a dealbreaker on more than one occassion.

Health is a secondary issue; and given my genes, I don't anticipate being nicknamed Methuseleh.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

It's funny, but I do count getting hit on and getting girl's phone numbers as part of measuring my fitness success. I know personality and confidence (which I've always had a lot of) factor in, but it's such an encouraging confidence boost to know that you look good.

I think I'm mainly honing my body (I'm already in decent shape) for two reasons: the first is to be physically attractive, and the second is to feel healthier when I do stuff.

Also, there are plenty of times we all feel depressed about various things. I know I'm practically going insane over looking for a job--I feel like I'll be unemployed forever at this point. So working out is the best stress reliever and cure for depression that I have.

A change like the one you're going through might be just the thing to kick-start the weight losing Bri! Recently my Mom (mother of four) started dieting and walking before work in the mornings, and has lost weight for the first time in twenty years. She's even cut her hair (it's been long since the 1950's) to commemorate the change in lifestyle and it's helped her get started!
