I think the Grateful Dead are a better idea on paper than they are as an actual band.

I've never understood the appeal of most of the songs or albums that make it to Number One. After all, this puts Led Zep in the same league as Phil Collins' No Jacket Required. laugh

An underrated disc, I always thought. Mostly because JPJ's keyboards tend to dominate instead of Page's guitar.

As a prog fan, I am often accused of heresy by other proggies when I point out that Emerson, Lake, & Palmer blow chunks.

Music Heresies...great idea for a thread!

Okay sometimes I feel like I'm the only person in the world that thinks U2 are over-rated, "right-on" wankers that never had an original thought in their "creative" lives.

Oh yes and The Smiths...will someone tell that ponce to stop whining and sing properly.

The Beetles suck. Especially Paul McCartney.

Sortb of linked to that while I do think that some of the Beetles songs are well written and can be done really well by other performers the originals are pretty crappy. The same goes for Bob Dylan (the world's most godsawful singer ever, but a pretty good writer) and Elton John (whose singing voice just bugs me, but he does write greats songs).

Oh, and Elton John especially deserves to burn in Hell for re-writing and completely mangling Candle In The Wind. What was a brilliant, touching song turned into unmittigated sentimental pish. Doesn't help that I have absolutely no love for Diana but Elton John should know by now he can't write lyrics. No wonder Bernie Taupin pointedly said he had nothing to do with the re-write.

I can't stand Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey. Screechy, talentless, self important and generally completely unloveable. ick ick ick. I also hate Celine Dion and put her in the same class as Witless Howling and Mariah but then again almost everyone hates Celine so that's probably not heresy. laugh

Oh, and I prefer Annie Lennox's version of Whiter Shade Of Pale to the original.

EL, right on! I can not stand U2. Most over-rated band in history! They may have a few passable songs but that's it. They are not the be all end all of Irish rock. The Pogues and the Saw Doctors come to mind as Irish bands deserving more of the spotlight than Bono and his talentless crew.

whoever it was there's a queue forming to give them a right good beating!

And given the media whipped hype here in London during that time it's a wonder there weren't more "stars" turning out this sort of turgid nonsense. He really did massacre a very pretty song.

Yup I actually like quite a few of Elton's songs.

And the Beetles.

laugh

The Beatles had a couple songs that were for the dogs (revolution no 9 and such), but I blame Yucko for those.

Other than that, The Beatles rule. laugh

My personal heresies are Tiffany singing a Beatles song that she didn't have the range for...

Fish Heads is like the worst song ever...

And I'll jump on the anti-U2 wagon... could they be any suckier?

I was never partial to The Cure's sound either. Nothing worse than whiney, depressed males with an audience.

ya know, U2 is ok, as long as you dont go past the 3rd album i think
Fuck bono, asshole, why dont you take ALL your fucking money and donate it to charity instead of living in a mansion.
Journey now theres a band that can really put fucking shit out. Steve Perry, christ, great voice but what an ugly fuck. Neil Schon, great guitarist, too bad he wrote gay songs.
Loverboy, growing up in canada i had loverboy thrown in my face non stop. It drove me insane, and the songs OH MY GOD!!!
WANNA PIECE OF MY HEART
BETTER START FROM THE START

start from the start?? WHAT THE FUCK KIND OF LYRIC IS THAT??

and wanna hear something funny, i had to endure a loverboy concert just to see the band i wanted to see. Even though the band i wanted to see was opening i couldnt leave til my ride arrived after the concert. Ohhhhhhhhhhh Loverboy had a glow in the dark stage.

QUEEN rules.

I too will join the anti-U2 bandwagon, although the song Faraway, So Close is a personal favorite.

And yes, I realize how important The Beatles and Rolling Stones were/are to the music scene... but I just am ambivalent towards about 90-99% of their songs...

No, I am saying that Tiffany singing a Beatles song that she doesn't have the range to sing in the first place, is an afront to music. And thereby heretical.

The way The Beatles sing the song is way beyond compare.

Then that's her heresy, not yours.

C'mon, Tiffany is an easy target.

Admit to not liking something with critical acclaim/hipster status. Or loving the lowbrow, the stuff the think you shouldn't.

If I have to see that pasty faced creep from the White Stripes again, I'm going to have a conniption. Who the hell decided this is what passes for good rock these days? "Look at me and my big schtick! I don't have a bass player, get it? Eh, eh? I let my semi-talented ex-wife play drums and we dress in funny outfits! Hmm?"

And I will risk flying in the face of the tastes of about half this board when I say that without a doubt in my mind that prog "rock" was the worst, most boring anti-rock music ever. Thank God punk came along to remind a dulled generation that you didn't have to go to Oxford to start a band.

I admit to being thoroughly unimpressed with The White Stripes when I saw them on SNL. Yeah, it was different that it was JUST him banging away on his guitar and her pounding on the drums but it wasn't good interesting.

Fortunately, Beck is next week's guest and I'll get to see him sing LOST CAUSE... I *still* need to buy the SEA CHANGE cd...!

appaently Jack White of the white stripes is one of the worlds greatest guitar players. Apparently better then eddie van halen and a host of others. I thought it would be kinda early in his career to get such praises but what the fuck do i know.

Bevis, for the most part I agree with you 100%. I never really like the Beatles (the Dave Clark 5 were much cuter). Many of the Beatles songs, after (or maybe, starting with) Revolver sounded like novelty jingles.

Elton John was great with "Your Song", the soundtrack from "Friends" and the "Tumbelweed Connection" album (especially "Burn Down the Mission"). After that, he started getting silly, and after that he started getting schmaltzy (for which he must never be forgiven.)

Whitney, Maria and Celine -- I so agree. As a Canadian, I'm so ashamed of the musical exports that have become popular. They are so mediocre. However, we have so many wonderful voices - listen to Patricia O'Callaghan if you can. She does the most amazing version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujiah".

The one Point I must disagree on is "Whiter Shade of Pale". This is possibly my very favorite song, ever!, and although I love many versions (including Willie Nelson's), it's a Procol Harum classic and always will be. It is such a great song about getting drunk. (or at least that's how I interpreted it).

Don't you get it, LABRADORIAN? No bass player. Ex-wife on drums. Matching red and white outfits! Do I have to spell it out for you? Best guitar player ever! Genius!!!

Elton John. Showed without a doubt that while he can write a good tune he can't write lyrics to save his life even when he only has to change a word or two here. I mean "Goodbye England's rose"? Apart from being a hideously twee sentiment there's also the fact that Diana (the stupid bint) WAS PRINCESS OF WALES. Ack.

As for Whiter Shade Of Pale I have to say that i don't dislike the original, just I prefer Annie's version. It should be said though that I tend to prefer female singers anyway so it could be partially due to that (plus I'd always put Annie Lennox in my top 4 singers ever).
