C'mon, Tiffany is an easy target.
Admit to not liking something with critical acclaim/hipster status. Or loving the lowbrow, the stuff the think you shouldn't. I must have missed the part where we were putting standards on the heresies here. Are you saying that you liked her rendition of that song? When she hits the first part of the note then has the guitar take over for the higher pitches... well that heresy is big enough for everyone to share. Its not my fault that she put it out there, I am just pointing it out; easy target or not. I kinda thought that's what this thread was about. I must have also missed the part where her rendition of that song acquired critical acclaim/hipster status. Or maybe I am not understanding what you are trying to say. As for the low brow, now your in my target zone.

I'm a big Jefferson Airplane/Starship fan, but my own personal heresy is I can't stand Grace Slick's songs other than "White Rabbit." "Greasy Heart" is okay, albeit incomprehensible, and "Lather" is sort of fun, but they're far from indispensible. Most of her songs are obscure in meaning and impossible to sing or hum. Perhaps she's just way out of my league of musical comprehension. Or perhaps the empress has no clothes (a statement which she might once have taken as a dare).

Grace did not write "Somebody to Love." It was written by her then brother-in-law, Darby Slick.

I'm a Canadian living in the States. Usually I'm pretty patriotic (Canada, that is). However, when it comes to Canadian music exports, I'm generally repulsed. My hate list is:
Anne Murray (boring) Alanis Morrisett (screeching idiot) Murray MacLaughlan (and I knew his brother) Celine Dione (boring) Chantal Krevajiak (or whatever her name is) BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive) Shania Twain (pretty but really boring) Nelly Furtado
I love my country, but we can do so much better.
On the plus side, I do love
Gordon Lightfoot Patricia O'Callaghan Michael Buble The Guess Who

I love The Guess Who, too, and BTO had some decent songs (loved "Let It Ride"), even though Randy Bachman couldn't sing his way out of a raincoat.

She brought a lot to the compositions by other band members and even to the Starship songs that suck. (The only part of "Sara" I can listen to without drifting off into slumberland is her vocalizing at the end.)

Have you ever been to San Francisco? The Jefferson Airplane house is well known, on Fulton Street ( right beside Golden Gate Park).

In fact, I had to think twice about the street (even thoug I've live in SF for 20 years). (PS - you're helping me be 1 away from 150 posts - my personal goal for today).

I bought the "Candle in the Wind" remake CD for curiosity about an orchestral arrangement of what Elton sang at that funeral. But I kept it for what used to be, in the days of 45s, called the "B side," "Something else else About the Way You Look Tonight." One of his best recent works, a solid performance.
I cry every time I hear Elton's "Last Song." For four friends I have lost. Yes, you know how.
So sue me.
I don't reply on the subject of "heresies," as such, because I don't endorse the concept of "heresy," as such. Not in religion, nor in discourse, nor in artistic tastes. It presumes that someone else sets the standards. I set my own, and I know what I like.

It surprises the hell out of me that nobody has mentioned Wierd Al Yankovic yet... or Ray Stevens. I could listend to "Polkas on 45s" all day long.

[/b] If you mean that it's a taste shortcoming to like Weird Al's songs (as opposed to not like them), then I, too, plead guilty. I still love the lyrics of "Eat It" after all these years, and I LOLed at "Smells Like Nirvana" and "Amish Paradise." Besides, who do you think was the inspiration for my parodies over on Bits o' Legionnaire Business? Ray Stevens ... "The Streak"! Another heresy worth being heretical about.

On the other side of things, I think Marty Balin was underrated. [/b]I agree. Very underrated. Marty had a way of taking the schmaltziest love ballads and making them sincere: "Miracles," "Count On Me, "Runaway," and even going back to the Airplane with "Comin' Back to Me" and "Today." As cliched as it sounds, he was soul of the band, counterpointing Slick and Kantner's soaring melodies and ideologies.

Agreed about Balin. He appears to have been more of a prime mover on the SF scene then people realize.

I got to interview three original members of the Airplane (Bob Harvey, Signe Anderson and Jerry Peloquin) and they were all very candid about Marty's business sense in founding the Airplane.
