Since March 2002 I've been watching this website at City Of Heroes .

Basically its an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) based around super-heroes.

As a long time Legionnaires fan, this is like a dream come true for me. I designed my character, his powers, his look, his name, his background, even his battlecry and I get to Role-Play as a Legionnaire!

If anyone else is a member or if anyone wants to join, drop me a line or find me on the "Freedom" server under the name ION Prime smile

This looks like it could be lots of fun, particularly if we put together an LMBP team. Just think Cobalt Blue, GreyBird, Speelbinder, Fat Cramer, IronRat, (and little ol' Varalent) etc as a real team battling evil in the City of Heroes!!!! laugh

Would have been fun if it didn't cost so much per month frown I can't imagine many of us here willing to subscribe at $30/month eek

My hubby and I got to do the last week of the beta, though I didn't get to do anything until the final night. So there I am, fresh off the character generator, and I'm fighting an alien invasion. I'm also dying every 10 seconds or so. smile

But it was fun, so we're going to give it a try. I don't remember which server we saved my character, Chillflare, on, though I imagine I'll be able to create him on the Freedom server, too. We were hopping on to each one at the last minute since you only got to save one character each.

I just don't game enough to spend $30 a month on it. It does sound like fun though.

It is $14.99 a month and you get one free month when you buy the software. Plus, if you purchase the software through Amazon and buy a 2 month subscription card, you get 50% off the card. So you can play for 3 months for 15 bucks (+ the price of the software). There is a glitch not allowing the certificate for the 50% off to work right now but as soon as Amazon gets it worked out I just may buy the game and try it out for 3 months.

I gotta say Ive been playing it non-stop since the 3 day head start before the Launch day and its amazingly addictive.

We had an alien invasion of Rikti last week, reminded me of the blight for some reason, but it was so much fun whacking these guys smile

Awe, I kinda want to play but that's a high monthly fee. I already have Netflix that I don't take advantage - having to pay more moolah to save the world on a monthly basis?!? gah!

It looks fantastic, but my system is nowhere near strong enough to handle online roleplaying. Never mind that I really don't have the time to get the most out of the investment.

So far I've just set up shop on Virtue and Victory. I forgot to double check this thread before I started getting into it. My main character's name is Chillflare (ice and fire powers -- Freezerburn was taken in "Wild Guard" smile ), but I think I'll play with the character generator some more this weekend. It's fun!

I spent a good chunk of time on their website looking at the sample characters and some of the listed powers and, yes, it looks like it's fairly well thought out. Especially costume design.

*sigh*

I'd love to join Varalent et al., but I don't think Windows 98 and a mere* 366 MHz Celeron processor can handle it, and I don't think my wallet can handle anywhere near $30 a month.

It's entirely intriguing, though. I would imagine that the virtual venue is designed to bring in many people who are not normal RPG fanatics. (I would qualify on that score.) It's being marketed all over the place. Not having to imagine or HeroMachine an outfit is also a plus.
_____
* I started out on a CP/M box with an 8 MHz processor -- yes, 8 -- and 64 KB of memory, two 160KB floppy drives, and no hard drives, so yes, you whippersnappers, the need for that "mere" is highly amusing to me wink

Consider me hooked. Been playing since I loaded it yesterday. Just hit the 7th level. And I'm on the Triumph server if any of you want to join up. I'll post a pic below of my character. But I have to share a story about his name.

I had decided for my first to go with a Lightning Lad like character but more dark in appearance. His name was already set, based on an RPG Garth I play in a Smallville (TV) setting. Gar Randall. So when it came time to figure out a hero name I couldn't think of a one.

Then I remembered that Odin had a staff or something that was the embodiment of lightning. So I looked it up and it was called Gungnir. Cool and unusual. Then I spotted something at the end of the entry in Wickpedia that made me laugh. The rune name for Gungnir is Gar. Not making this up. I figured it was fate.

Anyway, here's my first, and so far only, hero:

Oh, and he has a robotic right arm. Lost in his accident that granted him his power.

Does this RPG software generate your character's look from his or her attributes, powers, decoration, etc., in a manner similar to HeroMachine? Or did you work the look up elsewhere?

Sigh... It's a dream come true, but I certainly won't be able to afford it anytime in the near future.

Part of the design is to actually create your character from a standard mesh. Much like HeroMachine but more complex. I wouldn't hesitate to say that there are infinite combinations. Maybe when I have more time and am ready to create a second character I'll do screen captures of each step.

I decided to bite the bullet. The cost for one person is $14.99 a month with discounts if you buy either 2, 6 or 12 month memberships. I decided to plunk down $77 for 6 months to try it out. You can also buy 2 month Subscription Cards through a number of retailers, most notably Amazon and Game Stop, for $29.99.

okay LL but my question is can you import other skins from an outside source like you could with Freedom Force ?

My answer would be no since this is an on-line game, much like Everquest. To my knowledge Freedom Force was something you played without having to be on-line to do it.

Although with all the combinations available you could probably recreate anything you wanted with time and patience. I saw someone running around yesterday in what looked like the Earth 2 version of the Boy Wonder's costume, including the R on his chest. It must have taken the player some time in recreating it.

Until I can get home and start up a new character, here is a quick peek at the character creation screen, courtesy of GameSpy :

Each heading (Head, Upper Body, Lower Body) has a drop down that lets you change different aspects. In the image above the lower body is set to tight (as opposed to baggy, leather, armor, etc). You then can pick (for most but not all) another subset. Here you see Pants then another subset listed as Tights 1 (I don't remember how many categories there are) and an additional choice of Flames. Each of these options can be colorized to your choice or you can chose the option to copy the color look across the entire body (including hair).

You could literally spend days just going through the different options.

GameSpy has more screen shots that you can see here .

If there really is enough interest I'll try to do an option by option creation of my next hero. One based on a character I created who is the son of Gar Logan and Terra Markov. Don't know how his power will transfer to the game yet but I'm sure it'll be fun figuring out.

Scott, I'm really tempted to join you. Does the 14.99 get you unlimited heroes or is it an additional fee for each one you create? Also, what are the minimum requirements (ram, etc) that you think you should have on your computer for this to play well. Don't know if I should join now or wait until later this year, when I plan to upgrade to a new computer.

Vee, you can create up to 8 characters on each server and there are 11 servers. I would think 88 characters would be enough for anyone. The catch, though, is that each character can only be played on the server it was created on. There is no way, as of right now, to copy the character and all of its attributes and levels to a different server. Hence the need to coordinate with on-line friends prior to chosing a server to build a character on. For the record, I'm on Triumph. smile

As for the requirements here they are, straight off the box, both minimum and recommended:

Minimum System Requirements:
Windows 98/ME/2000/XP * Intel Pentium III 800 MHZ or AMD Athlon 800 MHZ * 256 MB RAM * 4X CD-ROM Drive * 2 GB available HDD space * GeForce 2 series or ATI Radeon 8500 series video card * 16-bit sound card * 56K modem * Direct X 9.0 (included on disc) * keyboard and mouse

Recommended System Requirements:
Windows 2000/XP * Intel Pentium 4 1.7 GHz or AMD Athlon XP 1700 * 512 MB RAM * 16X CD-ROM Drive * 2 GB Available HDD space * GeForce FX 5600 or ATI Radeon 9600 series video card * 16-bit sound card * broadband internet connection * keyboard and mouse with scroll wheel

A valid credit card or time card is also required.

Hope this helps.
