I've been a Diane Keaton fan since "lah-de-dah" and "van Goff" (you have to identify the two Woody Allen '70s classics). And of Jack Nicholson since "Five Easy Pieces" and "Chinatown." All seen in theaters, which tells you that I fit this new film's supposed target demographic. Even so, I wasn't prepared for how well-acted, and how moving, this new romantic comedy was. And if you're a sucker for love, at any age, you'll enjoy it.
Jack is a women-in-their-20s-chasing recording-company owner who has the high gloss of limitless charm and beaucoup bucks, but is brittle in more than one way, in spirit and body. Diane is a successful Broadway playwright who fears she's one step away from being a serviceable hack, and has shut down emotionally after her divorce. Circumstances that could only happen in a surreal place like the Hamptons throw them together (especially after Jack breaks under, um, pressure from Diane's daughter). Any more, I'll leave to you to discover.
Except for one line of afterglow Keaton has while in bed, putting a lifetime of might-have-beens into an astonishing turn of acted phrase: "I'd thought I had closed for business." She just floored me with that.
Amanda Peet, Frances McDormand, and Keanu Reeves (yes, he's convincing as a 30something M.D., don't believe any reviews you may read) do charming and witty turns in supporting roles.
Oh, and you have to stay for the credits, and the last of many singers' versions of "La Vie en Rose." (The famous song with the same title as the movie, by the way, one of Sinatra's flashier pieces, isn't present.)

Grey, I am a huge, huge Jack Nicholson fan, so I'm going to eventually see this either on DVD or in the movies. I like Diane Keaten too, although I'm more familiar with her from the Godfather movies. The other acters, especially Keanu and Amanda Peet are always entertaining to me, so this cast alone is enough for me to give this movie a good watch. I already know it'll be good though. Any movie with Jack Nicholson making witty comments always is . (Just watched Goin' South the other day for the first time. I practically cried from laughter). BTW, have you seen Moulin Rouge is on VH1 a lot now? Calling this a movie you like is a bit of an understatement if I recall correctly . Oh, and I'm in love with Nicole Kidman. She might be my favorite current actress (my longtime favorite will always be Audrey Hepburn, my life long crush).

Yeah, just a bit ... 18 times in the theater, for those who don't know. I'm glad it's getting through on VH1, though by now I couldn't endure the commercials! (DVDs are wonderful.)
And as for late, great Hepburns, they're both stellar and beautiful, but Kate grabbed me with "Holiday" and "The Philadelphia Story" and has never let go.
I saw Nicole last night in "Birthday Girl" on Encore. A fair-to-decent caper film was immensely improved by her physicality and energy. She's blossomed in her career, with astounding range (do see her in "The Hours"), and great achievements still lie ahead for her.
