Well, I'd never say that I'm a country fellow, but I'd take Patsy Cline and Willie Nelson just about any day. And I'll be walkin' after midnight, if you care to know my whereabouts.

One of my favorite recent releases is Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers' Sonoran Hope and Madness-- great blend of alt-country and Southwestern flavored rock. Remind me to give you a listen next time you visit, Stuey.

Apropos of this last week on LegionWorld, as Mary Chapin Carpenter sang, "Sometimes you're the windshield / Sometimes you're the bug."
Country music sounds better when I'm in the car, somehow. Never figured that one out. Perhaps the American obsession with the road?

coincidently, that song was written and performed originally by a rocker, A GREAT ONE AT THAT, i find it funny that people look at remakes as the original(not saying you did Grey) and lets be honest country music is more rock n roll then country If it wasnt for rock n roll, country would be non existent except for the older generation. Take Shania Twain for example, her husband Mutt Lange is a legend in the rock scene, he made multiplatinum albums for ac/dc, def leppard and a host of other groups, not to mention some of the pop stars out there, and now he has brought rock n roll to country, you should thank him. Mark Knopphler(sp) originally wrote that song. THE BUG.

I like old-school Country (Patsy Cline, Hank Sr. and the like) and bluegrass. There's very little coming out of Nashville anymore that interests me. The best stuff today is on the fringe.

A friend of mine recently sent me a mix tape of classic bluegrass with contributions from folks like Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, Hazel Dickens, and the Country Gentlemen. Terrific stuff.

I like an old Allison Krauss song which had scenes from the Disney movie Dumbo in the video. I LOVED that song but can't think of what it is. I love her voice but some if her music is just too twangy for me. I do like some country music, just not the Twangy stuff.

A few years ago, Disney put out an album of Disney songs performed by country artists -- I wonder if that song from Dumbo is on it. (It's a very nice song, by the way.)
Disney also put out an album recently of Disney songs performed in a bluegrass style. It's called "O Mickey, Where Art Thou?" or something similar.

On KZLA (the world's largest audience for any country station, and it's in El Lay) the constant mantra is "You can hear the lyrics." That you can, and it's a great virtue of country music.
The songs tell stories, and you can at least tell what the stories are. Usually the same repeated archetypes, about the faults of lying friends / unfaithful spouses / pernicious foes, but 'twas ever thus, back to the days of Homer. (And forward to the Legion.)

and how many times do you have to hear the same story sung over and over and over, that doesnt happen in rock, and anyone who listens to rock hears the lyrics. Lets be honest, 100 yrs from now country music will be practically non existent is existent at all. Thats why they rocked it up a bit, it was a dying breed.

Listen to rock, they tell real stories that bring up real emotion. They sing about REAL things and dont try to candy coat it.

To me, it's pointless to compare rock to country because they're different genres and appeal to different sensibilities.
I do feel that country is more geared towards telling stories than rock. When rock stars try to tell stories in their music, they often get labelled folk. If mainstream rock is about telling stories, it's in an indirect manner, at best.
Both genres have strengths and weaknesses. Country seems more about celebrating home and family, at least in the songs I've heard. It would be hard to imagine a rock'n'roll version of "My Town" by Montgomery-[2nd name escapes me], or "Red Dirt Road" by Brooks & Dunn, or even "Beer for My Horses," by Toby & Willie.
On the other hand, country doesn't seem suited for the likes of "Sex & Candy" by Marcy Playground or "Push" by matchbox twenty.
Of course, there are plenty of songs and artists that crossover. Much of what I hear in country today does seem similar to rock. I can't say the reverse is true, but country has always had a special place in rock history, whether some die-hard rock fans acknowledge it or not.
As for whether country (or rock, for that matter) will exist in 100 years -- who knows? I'm sure that all forms of music will continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of their listeners. A century ago, rock music did not exist, and country wasn't called country, but the sensibilities were there.

As a kid country was all I would listen to, so I'm a big fan of mid-70s-early 80s country. Loved Kenny Rogers, Ronnie Milsap, Dave & Sugar, Charley Pride, Charley Rich, Stella Parton, Rosanne Cash, George Strait etc. Still do.
I got out of country about 1981-1982 or so for the most part.
Then, about 1998 or so, I was hanging with this guy who was big into country so we listened to it a lot in his car. There were 2 songs that were big at the time-- ONE NIGHT AT A TIME by George Strait and THAT'S WHY I'M HERE by Kenny Chesney... I absolutely loved them both and these 2 songs rekindled my interest in "regular" country music.
Of course 1998 was also the year I discovered Lucinda Williams on a jukebox... and she fast became my absolute fave artist. And she practically *IS* the "alternative country" musical genre. Go out and buy WORLD WITHOUT TEARS now!

I listened to country, because of my mom, until I went to school in a different city than where we lived (longest bus-ride in the continental US at the time, 78 miles, one-way). That's when I got introduced to Styx, Journey, Foreigner and the likes. I still like the older country but do like some of the modern singers like Garth Brooks and George Strait. I just don't listen to country anymore. Have to really be in the mood and its not usually a good one.

Speaking of attractive country stars, I think Faith Hill and Tim McGraw must be one of the most attractive couples anywhere. I can't even imagine what their children look like.

I think they are an even prettier couple than Jessica Simpson and Nick What-ever.
Tim McGraw -DAMN!!!! And Faith has Jessica beat down pretty easily.
I am embarassed about Jessica being a Texan after seeing their new show on MTV. What a complete and utter DITZ!!! I feel bad for Nick. If he ever feels the need to leave her then I know another Texan who can give him comfort. i.e. ME!
There should be a law against
1) being that pretty
2) having that perfect of a body and
3) having a great singing voice
But Nick has it all. Well, I haven't seen his wee-wee yet so it might be the size of a gerbil's, but I seriously doubt it.

There's something about Toby Keith's "Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue (The Angry American)" that's very addictive. I ALWAYS have to listen to it all the way through when I'm driving and it comes on the radio.
How can you not be hooked on a song that has the Statue of Liberty shaking her fist?
