If I understand things correctly, Star Boy was eventually thrown into the 20th century (don't know how) and received a spin off comic. At a comic sale I found some Starman and I am wondering if this is the same thing.

I found issues #1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,15,32,

Issue #1 is dated Oct. 88 and he wears a purple and yellow costume with a big white star, also his eyes seem kinda funny.

Is this Thom or not?

That was the Will Payton version of Starman who was created by Roger Stern. He had no relation to Thom that I'm aware of.

PG,

There have been various Starmen who have no relationship to Thom or the Legion. I not exactly sure where or when, but at some point it was hinted about a future Starman who waore a full starfield costume (like the on Thom wears in JSA) I don't know if this was before or ater the Golden Age story.

I believe he was first seen in Kingdom Come. I'm not sure if the detail that he was Thom first appeared there or in the Jack Knight Starman series. Obviously Thom being in JSA now is following up on that.

Actually, unless I'm not remembering correctly, I believe the Starman (James Robinson, the one after the Will Payton series, V2) series states that the future Starman is actually an adult version of the reboot character (the one who dated Dreamer and first appeared in LSH V.4 #76, Jan 1996) and not the "pre-boot" character now appearing in the JSA.

Which is confusing because the Thom featured in JSA is clearly shown as being a part of the Lightning Saga Legion that approximates pre-Crisis. If pressed, I'd assume Geoff Johns would say Infinite Crisis retconned that encounter with Jack Knight to have been with LS Thom instead of Reboot Thom, but it was clearly Reboot Thom at the time (probably because the Reboot version was the "official" LSH when that story was written, with no other versions appearing).

Ok, so does this mean this comic title is NOT any kind of spin off from Legion? Not the same character, right? And does not go into my Legion collection?

Far as I know. Does anyone remember if there was any kind of Legion connection or appearances in the Will Payton series? Anything AR?

I read most of the title when it first came out, and I don't recall any. I did like it, though.

Yeah, Ditko was a master of the genre. Loved his super hero and sci-fi comics except for his Legion stuff.

As far as I remember there's no connection whatsoever to the Legion. The Starman series that followed though does connect. Shadow lass appears (somewhere around issue #50) and somewhere along there someone states that a future Starman will be named Danny Blaine, the name Thom claims for himself in a recent issue of JSA.

Actually, YK, I think Ditko was involved with another Starman, not Will Payton. Probably Mikaal Tomas.

Ditko drew the Prince Gavin Starman. (white guy with the sheep herding staff) I'm not sure if he ever drew the Mikaal Starman. (blue guy)

Purple and Yellow Suit = Will Payton. One of my favorite dead books. After Lyle left, the art when to heck, then Stern left and it died on the vine.

But it was a great fun read. The main character had a mom and sister that were normal, not in a refrigerator. He was normal, not angsty or an a-hole.

Good superhero stuff.

Wasn't Will's sister Jack Knight's love interest for whom he retired?

I don't know if this will help or confuse things, but the list of the iterations of Starman would include:

Ted Knight: (The original character from the Golden Age, a member of the JSA and, by retcon, the All-Star Squadron)

Starman of 1951: A retcon from a much-later comic, revealed to be Charles McNider (Dr. Mid-Nite)

Mikaal Tomas: The blue alien from the '70s.

Prince Gavyn: The alien with the odd eyebrows from the early '80s.

Will Payton: Late '80s/early '90s series discussed above.

David Knight: The first son of Ted Knight.

Jack Knight: The second son of Ted Knight and the star of the '90s series.

Thom Kallor: The Legion's contribution.

And, I'm sure there are others--and this doesn't include Stargirl or the Star-Spangled Kid.

Ok, my bad. I thought we were discussing the sci-fi Starman.
I stand (or sit) corrected.

Not at all. DC really likes the name. They've used it so much. laugh

As far as I know, outside of a Valor appearance in at least one issue, there is no connection to the Legion.

Active LMB character is still Beast Boy.

Mikaal's also going to be in James Robinson's Justice League whenever they do it..if they still are at anyrate. Thom appeared in issue 49 at the end and throghout 50 in it's entirety. In that issue they " dropped the bomb" that post ZH Thom was Danny Blaine. Danny Blaine was first mentioned in Starman 1,000,000. Thom\ Danny first shows up at the end of Starman 79 and then early on in 80. He was supposed to be an incarnation of a friend of Jack's but who knows if that's been Punch retconned out of existence.

On a fun note, in that same 1,000,000 issue Lyle Norg's mentioned as a scientist.

Just to add to the confusion (and step back from DC's post-Crisis retcons) the Starman that inspired the "Starman of 1951" was Batman in DETECTIVE COMICS #247 (September 1957) who was afraid of bats at the time due to Professor Milo's liquid pill. (Robin's tough love forces Bruce to confront his fear and overcome it in the end...resuming his Batman career.)

But, there was also an almost completely ignored one-time Bat-Villain named Star-Man who appeared in DETECTIVE COMICS #286 (December 1960)!

He was trying to gain superpowers from a three piece belt. The red Star of the buckle, which he possessed, gave him super-strength. A belt which Batwoman bought gave the wearer immortality. And the buckle piece gave someone the ability to defy gravity. Batman, Robin, and Batwoman are able to defeat him just before he gained the entire belt.
