I was in our local paper yesterday! My boss and I were interviewed about our new library marketing plan we're cooking up for this spring. It's all based on MY "Library Superhero Family" creations. And yes, I did come up with this WAY before THE INCREDIBLES! :-) That's what everyone keeps asking--if I got the idea from THE INCREDIBLES. I just have to bite my tongue from telling them that the concept of a family of superheroes ISN'T such a new idea, LOL! These non-comic readers, I tell ya! Yeah, I'm bragging--so what! :-)
I'll go back to lurking in obscurity tomorrow. <g>
Anyhoo--here's the pic that was with the article.

Yay, Jackie! It's awesome to get in the paper without killing someone!

Congrats! It is neat to make in into the paper. Make sure you get a spare copy of the paper so you can cut out the article and picture and have them laminated on a wooden plaque to hang on the wall at home or in your office. Those look great!

Good for you, jack! My only claim to newspaper "fame" is that I had a letter printed. Oh, I also wrote an article that appeared in the newspaper when I was in middle school. And, of course, the infamous "sitting on Santa's lap" from my childhood days made the paper.

knowjack, would you please use your bibliophile wiles to lure Lash to the library? Thank you.

Capt. Info to the rescue!
Comic characters rush to pull in more readers

By Wayne Risher
January 25, 2005

Library chief Catherine Nathan is banking on cartoon power to keep 9- and 10-year-olds interested in books and the buildings that stockpile them.

A superheroes-themed marketing campaign will be one of the first moves made by First Regional Library's first new director in 33 years.

"Plug into the Power of Your Public Library," is the slogan for a campaign featuring caped crusaders Captain Info, his wife, Storyteller, their son, Dewey, and daughter, Page.

Dewey is a reference to the Dewey Decimal System of library book classification. Young people who help shelve books at the library are called pages.

"What we're going to try to do is really capture the attention of our fourth- and fifth-graders," Nathan said. Libraries tend to lose students, particularly boys, as they move into middle school.

"I want both boys and girls and moms and dads," Nathan said.

She said the system's 15-year-old mascot, Reggie the Reading Raccoon, has nothing to worry about. He'll still make public appearances, while Captain Info and family probably will be confined to T-shirts, printed materials and the library's Web site at www.first.lib.ms.us.

Captain Info's debut is planned for National Library Week, April 10-16. The new campaign is on a long list of changes planned by Nathan as she settles in as successor to longtime director Jim Anderson.

Interesting program, knowjack - and I like your superhero names. I would expect it to appeal to a wider age range than 9-10 year olds. Is there a reason that group is targeted?

The link didn't work for me, though.

Lash, are you confusing the library with the post office? wink

That's correct. He promised to... well over a year and a half ago! I told him about checking out TPBs and DVDs for free and low/no cost interlibrary loans, and broadly hinted at the possibility of comely literate lads (of which there is now PHOTOGRAPHIC PROOF IN THIS VERY THREAD) but he remains biblio-phobic. Is there a program for the likes of Lash? (My proposal involves my foot and his ass, but there are a few technical difficulties, alas.)

I have a fear that all libraries are built on Hellmouths after watching Buffy.

After working in a library all these years, Lash, I can tell you a lot of them ARE. But just go in thinking you're the star of the show; they never get killed off! Oh wait, Buffy got killed a couple of times, didn't she?
Um, nevermind. :-)
