The first Kid Quantum had the power to minimize the effects of any force upon himself, via a bulky 'quantum harness' he wore, and used that device to function as a hero, reducing the effects of energy blasts or even the kinetic energy within physical assaults on his person to a 'quantum' of their former potency.

Unfortunately, an enemy who had figured out how his quantum harness worked caused it to reduce the effects of even harmless, or necessary, forces upon his person, freezing him solid and causing him to drift away from the planet's surface, as it reduced his temperature to 1 Kelvin, and minimized the effects of gravity on his frozen body.

His sister, who had invented the device in the first place, internalized it's effects, so that she needed no bulky harness, and took his place, to honor his time as a hero, as Kid Quantum II.

Next: Triplicate Girl.

This one is totally cool! A variation on this would be a 'Projectra' that functioned as a sort of living voodoo doll, able to project injuries or conditions affecting herself onto others, so that she might carry a length of rope and coil it around her wrist to 'bind' someone else she is viewing.

Luornu Durgo was considered handicapped on Cargg because she could not split into three like normal people. But she was not so much handicapped as she was a mutant. Her power could only be used in conjunction with another person's super-power. Luornu was able to triple the effect or force of another person's power. Thus Saturn Girl could mentally command three people at a time instead of just one. Colossal Boy could grow to three times the size he normally could. Sun Boy cold shine three times brighter and generate three times as much heat.

A master of disguise Kirk Neighrich, made his living as a spy. He was the best spy the U.P. had as he could infiltrate any organization. But what they don't know is that his mastery of disguise is actually his ability to turn himself into an exact replica of anyone he's seen. But he can only maintain the duplication for 12 hours at a time. Making him an excellent escape artist.

Cosmic Boy is attuned to the universe such that he can know anything happening to any part of the universe at any time. Unfortunately, he can't do anything about it since his only super power is omniscience within our plane of existence.

Live Wire:

Ayla Ranzz always had an affinity with machines. She kept the equipment on the Ranzz farm in tip top order. Some said she could just tickle an engine to make it purr.

Then there was the accident on Korbal. Both her brothers Garth & Mekt gained the power to generate lightning. Ayla seemingly was unaffected. Then while looking for a spare power coupler to repair the moisture vaporator, she pick up a dead power cell. Suddenly the power cell came to life, fully charged. Ayla had gotten energy powers too. However, instead of generating lightning, she was able to charge up any machine. After a littler experimenting, she found she could also drain machines of all their power.

Her power was not enough to earn her membership as a Legionnaire like Garth, but her power plus her mechanical prowess got her the job as chief mechanic for the Legion. Her outgoing personality and mischievous pranks earned her the name Live Wire.

Zoe Saugin gained the ability to animate objects, provided they were made of organic material. So she can animate stuffed animals and corpses of people; items made of wood; and foodstuff. Whenever the Legion has to face an army of zombies and undead, she is at the front lines.

Next: Dawnstar

Donnough Bolto was angry! She was angry at the High Council. To declare that transmutation was evil. Why everybody knew that the people of Trom were the most gentle, peaceful, and benign people in the entire United Planets. She was angry at her brother. For believing the High Council. And for embarking on a life of crime and evil. Donnough was glad that their mother had not been alive to see the shame Laevar had brought to their family.

When Donnough discovered her brother's notes she decided to recreate his transmutation ray and give herself the power to transmute just like her brother. Then she would show the High Council and her brother that transmutation is not evil and that it could be used for the benefit of others. After 4 months, Donnough had perfected the ray. With it she was able to change an iron bar into pure platinum. Next came the most dangerous part. Subjecting herself to the transmutation ray. She was unsure about how long she would need to stay in the ray in order to gain her brother's power.

Taking a deep breath, Donnough stepped into the ray. Its light bathed her, but she did not feel any different. She stayed in the ray for a full ten minutes. She placed the bar of platinum in front of her. She knew that her brother's power flowed from his eyes. She stared at the bar and thought "Iron". Nothing happened. She thought harder. She filled her mind with everything she knew about iron. Nothing. Feeling frustrated, Donnough slammed her fist on the table. It made a strange sound. And hitting the table did not hurt. Looking down, she saw that where she had struck the table, there was now a fist sized dent. Looking now to her hand, Donnough saw that it was iron. The room began to spin and she collapsed on the floor.

When she came too, she thought she had had a nightmare, but looking again at her hands, she saw that they were still iron. going to a full length mirror, Donnough saw that her entire body had been transmuted into iron. She tried to think herself human again, but it did not work. She tried bathing herself in the transmutation ray, but it had no affect either. Donnough then thought about gold. She again concentrated and filled her mind with everything she knew about gold. Looking in the mirror, she saw that she had now turned into gold.

After some experimentation, Donnough discovered that she could transmute her own body into any element. She could even become ethereal by turning her body into oxygen. However, she felt herself drifting apart and quickly turned herself back into iron.

Traveling to Earth, Donnough sought out the Legion of Superheroes. She hoped that Brainiac 5 could reverse the transmutation effects and make her human again. She thought that the Legion would be able to help her track down her brother. And she felt that she could also show the Venusian High Council that transmutation is not evil, but can be used for good. Donnough took the codename "Dawnstar" as that is one of the names Terrans had for her home world of Venus.

That's awesome Quis! Love the 'dawnstar' as relating to Venus, and tying it all into Leavar Bolto and transmutation! Excellent mix-up!

Thom Kallor was born on an astronomer's ship. From early childhood he lived among the stars. One day, the star giving his homeworld sustenance threatened to explode. Defying certain death, Thom dove into the star to stabilize it. He thought he would die, but he emerged able to generate light and heat like a star. He then took the name Star Boy.

Next: Magnetic Kid

Magnetic Kid is the younger brother of Wave and Infectious Lass. He has a magnetic personality that makes everybody like him. Normally the Legion is strict about their no duplication of powers rule, but gosh darn it, these three are just so lovable, you can't reject any of them.

Tragically, Magnetic Kid died in a fight against the Fatal Five when after he used his power to turn Validus against the other members of the Fatal Five, Validus hugged Magnetic Kid and accidentally crushed him to death.

Validus to Magnetic Kid "I'll hug him and squeeze him and call him George..."

Like, psychedelic man! Chemical King is an expert at getting people high, because his body naturally secretes several substances that have a range of effects on people - uppers, downers, hallucinogens...

He used to be immune to his own powers, but that was no fun. Thankfully, he's learned to control them well enough that he can get high himself too.

Apparition

Brainiac 5 gritted his teeth and thought "You have a 12th level intelligence. You know this is not reality. You control your emotions. They do not control you." Still he wished his teammates, Saturn Girl, Dream Girl, Princess Projectra, and the White Witch would hurry up and contain the creature. In front of him, the creature manifested itself as an evil and insane version of Brainiac 5. And deep down, Brainy knew that this was indeed his darkest fear.

On their way to Orando, Projectra had related the old myth of the Apparition. The old legends had the Apparition as an ethereal being which could take the form of your deepest fear and literally frighten you to death. For generations most people on Orando, which knew magic was real, believed the Apparition was just a story told to make children behave. But then people started dying.

So, the Legion was called in. Between reviewing all the old stories about the Apparition and utilizing some specialized recording/measuring devices, Brainy had a good idea of just how to capture this creature. He had set himself up as bait and by controlling the amount of fear he felt, he was able to keep the creature distracted so that the other Legionnaires could spring the trap. Once captured, they would be aable to determine whether the Apparition was a sentient being or just a mindless creature.

Calorie Queen can control the digestive process in living beings. She can cause you to experience diarrhea or constipation or stomach cramps; she can make your digestion more effective and give you more energy; and can control the effect of substances taken orally.

Quislet

The smooth featureless humanoid known as 'Quislet' (a term combining elements of quisling and strangelet) is composed of 'strange matter,' and a seemingly impenetrable field of energy, almost like a humanoid-shaped event horizon, prevents his 'body' from contacting the outside universe, making him effectively invulnerable.

Able to manipulate his field, he can expand or reduce his apparent size, or his form to assume a non-humanoid configuration, as well as fly or hover in place.

Were the strange matter of his body to interact with the matter of our world, it would begin a chain reaction that would cause matter touching him to become unstable strange matter, before dissolving completely in a rush of energy. It's possible that such an event could, in addition to being catastrophic to the world around him, prove fatal to himself, as his own strange matter begins to become unstable... Fortunately, his protective barrier appears to be impervious to any force this universe has thrown against it!

He takes the name 'Quislet' as a point of pride, referring not only to his 'strangelet' composition, but to his betrayal of his own people, who exist in a parallel dimension, and intended to forcible convert worlds in this dimension to strange matter, so that they could colonize the depopulated worlds. An advance scout, he developed a respect and admiration for the sentient populations of the worlds he'd been sent to prepare for destruction, and destroyed the mechanism used to prepare the dimensional breaching, stranding himself in this 'strange' universe, and his genocidal kin in their own dimension.

Jed Rikane had a thirst for power, but it was an altruistic thirst for power. Jed had a compulsion to help people and the more powerful he could be, the more people he could help. He studied all the latest scientific discoveries in the hope that he could give himself super-powers. But Jed lacked the necessary meta-gene that could transform an accident into powers. So he turned to the mystic arts.

Jed traveled to Nanda Parbat. There he performed a secret rite to summon Rama Kushna and demand power. Rama Kushna appeared and said "Jed Rikane, you wish personal power, but it must be balanced with humility. I will grant you a power, but you will not be able to use it on yourself. Learn the lessons of Rama Kushna and you will find you have the greatest power of all." And with that a bolt of mystical energy struck Jed in his chest, embedding a Yin-Yang symbol on him.

Jed now has the power to switch the super-powers of other beings. The switch would last for up to 15 minutes before the powers reverted to the person who had them originally. Power Boy became instrumental in turning the tide of battle for the Legion. Emerald Empress foresaw her own defeat while Dream Girl wielded the energies of the Emerald Eye. Mordru bounced helplessly while Chuck Taine use Mordru's mystic might to undo the damage the evil mage had caused.

And his power worked over distances as long as he had some connection between the two beings. So, while Phantom Girl remained at Legion Headquarters, via the communications link Shadow Lass was able to turn intangible to enter a locked room on Winath.


Next: Fire Lad

(Wow, Jed Rikane is POWERFUL! Amazing, Quis!)

Staq Mavlen kept away from people because he knew they would always leave him. One day, when he visited Legion HQ, he was surprised to see the Legionnaires bickering in front of him, with many threatening to quit! Even more surprisingly, Dreamer and Saturn Girl pointed to HIM as the culprit!

After an examination by Mysa and Brainiac 5, they concluded that Staq had the power to break bonds between people (which explained why half the workforce at his old company resigned). The Legion decided to use him as a secret weapon against villainous teams, while pretending he had the powers of fire breath and flight only to throw criminals off.

And thus Staq became FIRE LAD.

Umbra

Ansel Mallor was the planetary champion of Talok VIII in the corresponding Earth year 2262. He used the code name Umbra. In addition to being able to generate a field of darkness, he could condense the darkness and make it solid. He could then form this condensed darkness into a shield, a weapon, or a tool.

However in 2270 Umbra disappeared and was never seen again. That is until 3113 when Shadow Lad was checking out some mountain caves looking for some escaped criminals. Grev had flown into one cave that appeared empty. There was a flash of light that temporarily blinded him. When his sight returned, he saw Umbra lying on the cave floor.

Shadow Lad brought Umbra to the nearest med-center where he revived. Umbra could not remember how he got into the cave and the last thing he remembered was patrolling the capital city. Anxious to get back to his own time, Shadow Lad took Umbra to Earth. However, Brainiac 5 detected chronal radiation in all of Umbra's cells. This chronal radiation prevented Umbra from using the Time Bubble or any of the other time travel devices. There was nothing that seemed to affect or get rid of the chronal radiation.

Umbra returned to Talok VIII with Shadow Lad to help him protect the planet and to see if he could uncover what had happened to him. He was inducted into the Legion Reserve.

Dragons are interesting creatures. Just when you think you know everything about them, you get surprised.

And so it was when the Legionnaires battled a dragon on Zerox. The dragon's wing was cut off in the battle before it fled through the portal from whence it came. But the Legionnaires were surprised when the wing suddenly started flapping on its own! It could also create sonic waves and bursts of fire.

It soon took a shine to Kinetix and Violet, who decided to adopt it as a pet (much like Proty). And so began the weird story of Dragonwing.

Born on Bismoll, Jani Ignatio has the standard racial ability to consume and devour almost anything.

Unlike most of her people, she can also transfer the energy of the matter she devours, in chemical form, causing out of control growth in organic beings she points at, which, when she chooses, can be used to induce rapid tissue growth, and even healing, although this is far from her favorite use for this ability...

An immature life-form can be rapidly accelerated to adulthood by this 'excess' of bio-chemical energy, while an already mature creature instead puts on freakish amounts of both muscle mass and fatty tissue if she 'goes too far,' within the limits of its own racial tolerance, a process she mockingly refers to as 'super-fatassing' someone.

Fortunately, the process is unstable, and after a matter of hours, or sometimes days, depending on how much 'excess' she gifted someone with, the excess weight (or maturation) tends to fade away (although any tissue regeneration or healing that has already completed, thankfully, remains).

The Wild Fire cannot remember its name anymore. All it knows is that it was once human; but ages and ages spent in the Dreamtime have lost its original identity. Now it lives as a sentient flame which can merge with other sources of fire, heat and light; control said sources; and jump from flame to flame as a means of travel.

Mentalla

Delya Castil was something of a scatterbrain. Born on Titan, she had very underdeveloped telepathic powers. As she grew up, it was found that her non sequitur thought patterns interfered with telepathic communication. She was then banished from Titan. Making her way on Earth, Delya found that she could send out a mental burst which caused people to mishear what was being said. For example if I said "Do you want some ice cream?" you would hear "Shades of Imsk, your father wears ugly dresses!"

When she tried out for the Legion, Delya took the code name Mentalla, because she would often hear "That's not what I meant!"
Mentalla was rejected for not having a very useful power and because her power could also affect her fellow Legionnaires during a fight. Not to mention interfering with Saturn Girl's power. She temporarily joined the Legion of Substitute Heroes, but her power caused a number of fights among the other members. Mentalla now works at a school for the deaf.
