I am underwhelmed. Of course seeing Keith Giffen's name on it didn't help it for me.

they probably should have gone for a stronger hook in the first six pages. the art is nice on the opening splash.

First comic books ever bought: A DC four-for-47-cents grab bag that included Adventure #331. The rest is history.

O boy. False clues and misdirection galore, just in the first few pages.

“Ten years ago… the Five came. Implants failed. Life-support systems crashed. Governments toppled… Power went out across a thousand worlds… a resistance rose up—and was quickly squashed. No room for heroes in the New Cosmic Order…”

But which Five? The Fatal Five? Sounds like the final arc of Legion.

Or is it the Justice League?

And a mention of Cadmusworld (home of Ariel Masters (who looks a lot like Alexis Luthor) and Teri and Terry (Winathan twins?))

The 21st-century Cadmus was a cloning project. And T&T somehow created and control the Justice League?

Wow, where can I find JLA3000World.net?

I thought they would have another re-boot of the Legion of Super-Heroes, but that's not happening... they've ended the LSH in favor of a 30th Century Justice League. Don't like that decision at all... but, as far at the preview, I suppose it's okay...

I have to disagree. Just having the name Justice League on it will guarantee at least enough lemmings buying it to outlast Threshold.

It's a bit sad that the majority of the preview focuses on Ariel.

Even sadder that she seems to be more intriguing than the Cadmus twins or the five JL members (granted, the JL 5 DID only appear iin one ginormous page...)

I am reminded of an arc in X-Men 2099, where the team of that future met a kook who had created a team of artificially mutated (and mind-controlled) mutants that aped the powers and (in some cases) look of the original five X-Men, including a three-armed 'beast,' a red-headed telekinetic, a dude who shot a laser out of one of his eyes, etc. The setup teased an appearance by the 'classic' X-Men, showing a silhouette of the Angel against the moon at night, only to then reveal that these 'X-Men' where knockoffs created to replicate the original five.

This Justice League being revealed to be knock-offs, created and / or controlled by some similar kook, perhaps a villain, perhaps just a terribly confused person who wants to fill the void of superheroism by recreating a legendary historical team of heroes, could actually be an interesting story, as the creations begin to question the orders of their mastermind/creator (who may order them to do things he considers appropriately 'heroic,' like kill bad-guys, that they find themselves disagreeing with), and, in the process, these mockeries of ages-dead heroes discover within themselves what heroism actually means (or, for others, fail spectacularly to do so, and become threats that must be put down, perhaps by pre-existing 'retired' or 'disbanded' heroes who happen to be lying idle, waiting for this golden opportunity to remind everyone why heroes were ever necessary, and can't just be pumped out by nostalgic idealists with do-it-yourself-genetic-manipulation kits and too much free time).

But that could seem like quite the bait-and-switch to a customer who bought Justice League 3000 expecting it to be about the Justice League, and not the heroes who end up having to put them down / shut them off / change their programming / show them how to become actual heroes and not action figures of long-dead champions.

That's one of the things I was expecting it to be as soon as I thought they would be clones. Confused, out of place heroes struggling against various interests to follow the heroism they feel inside them. Sort of like the start of Next Men too, to my mind.

I really like the artwork. Actually the story seems okay. But the premise puts me off. I'll wait for a while and see what others say. Then I'll get the trade... maybe

You can place the blame wherever you wish, but the fact is that Marvel's "Avengers" movie killed the Legion.

That film made so much money that the folks at DC Entertainment felt very envious and have adjested everything they're doing toward an eventual JLA movie, with more Superman and Batman films along the way, all in the hopes of getting some of that Avengers money.

So, anything in the DC Comics part of the equation must help reinforce what DCE sees as their endgame; so, if it doesn't involve the Justice League (no matter how bizarrely so or how poorly so) then DC is no longer interested.

As for me, I'll be doing my part to strike back at this by never buying the JL3K or encouraging others to buy it. Let it die a quick death.

What happens if Guardians of the Galaxy takes off? Will the team that inspired the originals come back or will DC revive Threshold?

The current GotG are a L.E.G.I.O.N. counterpart, not LSH.

My views are my own and do not reflect those of everyone else... and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Cobalt, Reboot & iB present 21st Century Legion: Earth War .

I'd say that's pretty shaky logic to draw that particular conclusion, George. I'm sure if the Legion was selling well for them, rather than continually tanking in relaunch after relaunch, that they wouldn't have cancelled it just because they wanted to build the JLA into an Avengers-like powerhouse. I'm not saying DC has handled the Legion well at all, but ascribing this motivation to the Legion's fall is pretty ridiculous. DC is putting out more JLA-centric material simply because it sells, just as Marvel had done with the Avengers and X-Men franchises well before they hit big with their Marvel Studios productions. We'll see if JL3K follows suit saleswise or proves to be an exception for DC.

I looked at it at the comics shop.

No thanks.

Didn't they do this already with Superboy? Twice?

Are all the comics writers being given a birthday party at Build-A-Clone?
