The one real geek out moment I did have when reading the book was the poster of Gary Concord, Sr., early on in the book.

It was Kryptonese/Scarab font. I'd need to haul out older issues of Superman Family Adventures to decode it. Maybe tonight.

Guys I think Ultra Comics should be considered a nonbinary character. I mean, if Ultra is supposed to become the person reading them, it's kind of stupid to consider them as solely male or use male pronouns to address them.

Or it could be that everyone calls them "he" because that's how they perceive them, because of the over-saturation of white male protagonists in fiction.

^^Or a reflection of the fact that contemporary mainstream comics primarily appeal to young white males as their primary audience.

DC should really have used modern propoganda "You are with us or you are with the terrorists" style Marketing for this issue.

You are either down with Ultra Comics #1 or you are handing our world over to the Gentry.

So just finished issue #2, and I suspect I'll be reading it a few more times to get some more nuance, but it was pretty wild. I wonder if anyone in the the DC management team realises they just published a treatise against themselves?

Earth-33 is the problem. It always has been.

Any thoughts as to the meaning of the symbol on "Empty Hand"'s head?

I have faith in the DC Entertainment Management. I am sure they are perfectly self-aware of what utter bastards they are to their customers and employees, and proud of it.

That's great news! Is there going to be a Thunderworld one?

The first one they announced is for The Flash, though regarding Thunderworld, in the panel discussion where Morrison announces the new series, he said "For the whole pop art feel we thought we'd steal a little from Roy Lichtenstein considering how much he stole from comics."

Am I misunderstanding, or does this mean that Morrison will finally get to write a Flash OGN?

If so, I've been waiting YEARS for this! Morrison's love for the Flash is so apparent, I just know he'd do a great Flash story.

(I know he and Millar did a few issues each of the Flash many years ago, but I don't count those, because Morrison didn't have free rein.)

Yeah that kind of came across with how many Flashes were the focus of the second Multiversity issue.

Sarky, have you ever read Morrison's non-sequential memoirs, "Supergods"? That's a great book. We discussed it a bit in the So What Are You Reading thread. If you go to page 150, you should find all the comments about the book.

In anticipation of the Multiversity hardcover due in stores next month, I wanted to reopen the discussion of its various facets, and in particular "Pax Americana", which is the one issue besides "Thunderworld" that I bought because I had to read them right away. I loved them both, but "Pax" has been heavily on my mind of late. "Pax" has become the manifesto behind my current Bits fic project, and I think Dave's post below is particularly insightful of its great artistic worth:

Say what you will about Watchmen and DC's craven attempts to cash in on it with the drek last year, but this is a far better companion piece that acts as a homage, deconstruction, love letter and critique all at the same time.

So...my interpretation of "Pax" is that the world's first superhero, Yellowjacket, was accidentally killed by his own son, who then becomes president and tries to right his secret wrong by first having the Peacemaker kill him and then Captain Atom resurrect him, and it's destined to happen this way over and over and over.

Am I on track? Off base? What are your interpretations?

I'm not sure about the "over and over" thing, but the rest of it...

Yeah. Basically the President accidentally shot his father thinking he was a burglar. The man's been trying to compensate for this by being the best president he can. The plan was to have him be shot by Peacemaker and revived by Captain Atom as a means to inspire the American public by becoming a Christ-like figure.

Only some government people got rid of Captain Atom before that happened, so it just looks like Peacemaker assassinated the president.

Thanks for clarifying that, Sarky. I'll have to give "Pax" yet another re-read.

Hey guys, I borrowed the Multiversity Hardcover from the library and I found out a couple of tidbits.

Morrison sketched a cover for a "Doctor Manhattan" style cover but as an homage to Doctor Solar from Gold Key comics. There are also sketches for a Stingray (Batman of Earth-34) cover and a Cyclotron (THUNDER Agents) cover.

There're also designs for a Major Max character. Not the Carol Danvers doppelganger, but a counterpart for what might either be Mar-Vell or Miracleman.

Just re-reading through Multiversity again. I think he told Peacemaker that Captain Atom was going to revive him, but I'm pretty sure that was never really the plan. President Harley (Stan din for Peter Cannon, who DC no longer has rights to) gets rid of Atom, has the scientists killed by Sarge Steel, and then puts the plan in action anyway (also, Nora O'Rourke is killed because she's the only other one smart enough to decode the plan). He's the sacrifice they are talking about. It's his martyrdom will bring about the end of the Pax and usher in a true era of peace. He is also willing to die because he believes he deserves it for killing his father.

Thanks, Dave.

I think your take on "Pax Americana" is sound, although I have to wonder, the vice-president who becomes president, Nightshade's father, seems like an reactionary shithead. Do you think that's Morrison saying that for all of Harley's best intentions, his sacrifice will actually make things even worse? If so, the road to hell is indeed paved with good intentions.

I'll start looking over the annotations right now and comment when I'm done.

EDIT: Poo. That website is too much for my laptop to handle. I'll have to look at it on a library computer some other day.

It could go either way unless Earth-4 is ever revisited.
