The metal-eating flying worm swarm thingies made me think of the squiggles (or whatever they were called) from the earlier books -- the ones that floated around and could drill right through anything.

Strangely, however, lunar leeches seem to be made of metal themselves, so it seems like they would be vulnerable to attack by other metal eating space thingies.
