thothkins packs away the rest of his movie memories in his battered old Lon Chaney make up case...

...for indeed it was Gone with the Wind!

A film with a running time of just under 4 hours, or just under 4 years if you are a child.

I can only guess that my parents wanted to see it really badly, and that babysitting arrangements fell through in some sort of keystone cops comedy epic.

I can't tell you much about Gone With the Wind. I've never seen it since. Not that I was scarred by the experience (4 hours!), but that having seen it, I can't think of any particular reason why I'd want to sit through it again (twitch, relapse, twitch). There are any number of other films I'd only see once.

Having to think back >clink, whirr, thunk< it's the colour that has lasted in my mind. Sumptuous Technicolor, but subdued somehow in my memory.

I've never been partial to films with ballrooms in them, which I put down to this movie.

I imagine that assisting in making this feat of endurance possible were:-

Take a child too young to really have developed tantrum throwing prowess
Ice cream selling usherettes
Little kiosk in the foyer (before such things cost a body part to pay for).
An interval which must have come as a huge relief.

Over to you Ibbster...

I thought it must have been something like that. I was tempted to choose Dracula but it didn't seem like a very good film for babysitting smile

Would love to hear about the rest of the memories some time!

aw, thanks Ibby. I enjoyed that one, and all thanks to your question before it.

My favorite comic strip is easily Pugad Baboy. It's very Filipino, very witty, and very satirical; sadly, its jokes won't translate well into English. There's just this extra ZING that gets lost in translation.

It took me a while to build my (as of now) complete collection. Which of these was the last story I got?

a) Oplan Paglalanse - the "Walang Payat" Gang (no thin guys) launches a vigilante campaign against crooked cops

b) Maidnappers - two maids get kidnapped by crooks who mistake them for rich kids from the USA

c) Col. Manyakis - "manyak" basically means a sexual predator or a sexually promiscuous person whose attentions are unwanted. Sgt. Tomas' new army superior is just that - a female "manyak".

d) Benigno Ramos: Bounty Hunter - ex-con Igno Ramos (yes, that's his name wink ) takes on a bounty hunter gig, only to become hunted himself!

e) Aso - talking canine investigator Polgas stumbles upon an illegal mushroom farm and a werewolf!

f) Paraiso - married couple Dagul and Debbie, along with talking dog Polgas, have to fend off Chinese fishermen who use dynamite and cyanide to pollute the pristine waters of Palawan

g) Babman - resident hippie Bab takes on the cowl of Babman, the Pork Knight, to infiltrate a "professional" squatting syndicate

h) The Olongapo Caper - a vacation to Olongapo turns into an operation to rescue victims of a human trafficking group

i) Ang Hiwaga ng DueƱas - in the province of Iloilo, our obese heroes are preyed upon by supernatural beings who wish to feed them to their master

j) Green Heroine - vain Tiny and her gay friend Pao don costumes to take down a group of environmental terrorists

It sounds like a title full of zaniness.

I'll start with c)

"...not having to believe in a thing to be interested in it and not having to explain a thing to appreciate the wonder of it."

Yup, much like our own LMB shenanigans!

C was a hoot. Sgt. Tomas is a womanizer with an overbearing, kickboxing wife. But he didn't like having the tables turned and becoming the butt of his new boss' sexual advances...

Not C.

what about i)?

I found a few English translations here

"...not having to believe in a thing to be interested in it and not having to explain a thing to appreciate the wonder of it."

Those are decent translations. The grammar could be better, but the meaning is there.

i) was probably the first one of these that I read. The gay character Pao was mistaken for a pregnant woman, and wouldn't admit he was male - so off he goes to be the ghouls' banquet centerpiece. Oops.

I'll go of h) although I'm beginning to wonder if the more mature storylines, actually mean there are more of them left in the shops.

The storylines may tackle mature themes, but the way they are handled doesn't leave a bad taste in the mouth. Like with H, we are spared the details of the trafficking victims' plight, but the writer doesn't gloss over the fact that it's a terrible, terrible thing. The victim does get the chance to beat up her kidnappers in an all-out brawl near the end.

Not H.

I loved A! Very cathartic. Now, not all cops are crooked, but there are some bad eggs in the bunch for sure.

A was one of the earlier ones, so not A.

f) actually, they all sound as though they could have caused upset in any number of places, in a good way.

Ah, Palawan. Such a beautiful place. As far as read order goes this was somewhere in the middle. Despite being of Chinese descent I always identified as Filipino so it wasn't hard to decide who to root for.

The worst kidnap victim is one with an insulting sense of humor and no gag. And that is what Brosia is. Luckily, the gang saves her before the kidnappers lose it.

One of the earlier stories, and one of my personal faves.

J was an exercise in non-linear storytelling - quite a few flashbacks. It is one of the most recent, but still not it.

Interestingly, Pao's gun can turn any man gay for a limited duration. Whoops!

Illegal mushrooms are okay as long as the artist portrays them as eeeevil.

By the way, the werewolf is a good guy.
