Norm Breyfogle is in my and many others' Top 5 Batman artist lists alongside such illustrious company as Jim Aparo, Neal Adams, and Don Newton. Norm is currently in hospital after suffering a stroke. http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/12/17/norm-breyfogle-hospital-suffering-stroke/

Here's hoping.
I mean, Peter David had a stroke and he recovered. Let's pray Norm is able to recover the same.

Obviously hoping he comes out of this OK first anf foremost, but also hoping his recovery is quick and without hardship. For someone who makes their living drawing, any loss or change in motor control is devastating.

Norm's family unfortunately only raised $74,000 of their $200,000 goal. CBR has an article about it: http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2015/01/on-norm-breyfogle-what-would-batman-do/I know it's depressingly old news by now, but it's still amazes and saddens me that a supposedly first world, successful country like the USA has not created a functioning, egalitarian health care system yet. Unlike SO many other countries in the world. I live in Australia. I had something very horrible happen to me last year and was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery. I spent a month in there recovering and undergoing various tests and have made multiple follow-up visits back since I got out. I have another round of surgery booked for next month including another extended stay in hospital. I couldn't even tell you how many doctors and nurses have played some part in my health care over the last year. How much have I had to pay for all of this? NOT. ONE. CENT. Zero. Nada. Nothing. $0.00. But if I lived in America, I would probably be dead right now. Or facing limited prospects like poor Norm. Hopefully people can spread the word about him. He's only responsible for one of the (IMO) best Batman images of all time - http://www.comics.org/issue/44993/cover/4/

Thanks for the update, Blacula. Yeah, as much as I love America, I recognize that some things about it are really effed up.

I was hoping for that! I hope DC gives him more of the proceeds than whatever's standard. I'll definitely be buying a copy!

He's posting on his FB page, so I guess he's fine mentally and at least physically able to post. Here's something he wrote there: Norm the comics artist and illustrator is dead, but Norm the human being with a creative spirit and lots of reason and compassion remains alive.
I don't know why, but I felt the need to make that statement. Heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time....

In July someone asked him: "Hey Norm Breyfogle I hope you have recovered from your setback last year and wish you all the best in your future endeavors." His reply: Hi, Tim. I guess you don't know the nature of strokes. My recovery has only begun, and will take years. The stroke affected my left side, so I can't draw. All I have left is writing, and I think the fates, God, Allah, or any super beings who may exist and impinge themselves on our lives that I've been developing my writing for the last 10 years and it's been very therapeutic for me.
I also thank the human race's technological geniuses who have developed voice recognition in our information systems!

I hope his Batman hardcover burns up the charts and that DC gives Norm all the profits. The stories in this volume are some of the best Batman stories ever, including the great "Mud Pack" epic featuring all of the various Clayfaces. Hopefully, there will be more volumes to come to collect his complete run with Alan Grant.

I hope his past works can bring him the income he needs to get healthy and stay that way. Also hope he finds a creative outlet he can utilize.
Truly one of the greats--perhaps my favorite Batman artist of all time.

My heart is breaking for him, but I have to admit I'm kinda imporessed with DC for stepping up on a TPB. That's pretty terrific of them.
You guys remind me, and I'll hit the CBS first thing Weds to buy this.

BTW, as a counterpoint to the Gerry Conway stuff, Norm speaks highly of how DC has handled creator payments to him when they use characters he co-created in other media. The subject came up because Anarky will be appearing on Arrow next season. Presumably this treatment pre-dates his illness. I assume he's had many opportunities over the years as his co-creations during his Batman run include Anarky, the Ventriloquist and Mr. Zsasz, all of which have appeared/will be appearing on such shows as the classic Batman: TAS and Gotham.

Agree 100%! And as someone on his FB page pointed out, his Batmobile design may just be the coolest-looking one that's ever appeared in any media!!!

Now there's an indiegogo campaign to help raise money. For as little as $10, you get a pdf of WHisper #3-11 plus some extras, $50 gets you the actual book (280 pages). If they meet their goal of $10,000, the stretch goals include a bunch of very interesting extras.

Reminder: Legends of the Dark Knight Norm Breyfogle goes on sale tomorrow! If you want a bargain (and who doesn't?), In-Stock Trades has it for half price! That's $24.99 for a book cover-priced at $49.99! If you get that and at least another $25.01 in books, shipping's free! I use IST all the time, and highly recommend them. I just put my order in and can't wait to see what is surely a handsome collection (I've bought several of their Batman creator-spotlight hardcovers in including Don Newton, Gene Colan and Len Wein editions) spotlighting one of the best Batman artists ever in what are some terrific stories to boot! Best of all, these sales directly help Norm!

That they can cut a price in half kind of makes me wonder about proceeds distribution. Looks interesting though, I've never read Batman other than an occasional pick-up. I think I got the Hush stuff. I think I'll wander that site, thanks for the link.

Hey, all Norm fans, Since we're never going to see any new art from him, I thought it might be nice to not only celebrate all the great Norm art we can always look back to, but also some of his less well-known artwork. For instance, did you know that Norm drew a Thunderbolts story for Marvel (TB Annual 2000, to be exact?) This Annual was written by Fabian Nicieza, who at the time was only a few issues into his run as the successor to original TB writer Kurt Busiek. Fabe & Norm mesh creatively like chocolate & peanut butter, IMHO. They both seem to be having a great time working on this story. It's also a lot more accessible to readers who usually don't read Marvel than most TB stories. The plot is the familiar "everybody confronts their own personal demons" trope, but no less well-crafted for that. I highly recommend it.

I misread that as "I thought we're never going to see any new art from him" and was looking for the a "but" . Still, it's good to look back and I hope to see more from him in whatever capacity.

LOL One of the Batman characters Norm co-created with Alan Grant was called Joe Potato. And...we're back on topic.

Since my last post here, under my old Legion World ID, Norm has, unfortunately, passed away. There is a thread in the Anywhere Machine where we shared our thoughts on the loss of Norm: https://legionworld.net/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=960200But the main reason I'm bumping this thread is because I recently read the final three issues of "JLA Incarnations" for the first time, and issue 5 has a GORGEOUS eight-page backup story, tlted "Changes," and drawn by Norm. That the main character (a character Norm rarely drew even though Norm's style was perfect for them) is about to die makes it even more poignant than it already is. Norm fans, do yourselves a favor and seek out this story.

Hmmmm...I'm pretty certain that I either picked this up or would have. The memory's a little fuzzy, but this series might have been released during the time when I was without a CBS and depended solely on online sources. Either way, I'd be lucky to find it in the maelstrom that is my comics collection in the early aughts. Looking at the specific issue's description, I'm disappointed that it wasn't included in the Crisis Companion HCs. They included the outstanding Legends of the DCU Special that was also published long after Crisis, so the precedent was set......
