The Quest for the Secret Larder of Nargol continues...

My dreams of almond slices kept me focussed on step after painful, blinding step across the desserts deserts of Merthal. An old, toothless woman at one of the nomad camps spoke of towers of Jaffa Cakes in the garbled pate patois of an almost lost language. Legends and dreams. Still, I followed her advice...step after painful step across the lost lands.

And along the way lost another two pounds this week! By just keeping pretty much to what I'd been buying, I managed to avoid bothering with calorie counters too!

I avoided all things on the verboten list, although this coronation chicken thing is turning into a habit.

So, after a month, let's check those goals shall we? Yes, we shall...


Goal 1 - Lose 14 pounds. I've lost 8 so far. Yay!
Goal 2 - Get a balanced diet. It's a lot, lot better than before. Yay!
Goal 3 - Eat regularly in a routine. Easy. With no snacks I want my meals. Yay!
Goal 4 - More daily active/ exercise. Pants here so far. Bah!
Goal 5 - Podge reduction. A little, but getting goal 4 sorted will help here. Meh!

I am feeling a difference in day to day things, even with such a smallish goal (based on my work colleagues diets). Thanks to Ibby, I'm aware that exercise could lead to cheerfulness. I'm more concerned about this than the increased fibre making you fart thing I read.

If next week's instalment is The Happy People of Cheeryland, send snacks to the usual address...

I've lost one pound this week. It probably would have been more if not for the stupid time change. It messes with me terribly and made it very hard to get to the gym in the morning. sigh

Just a bite sized >sob< portion of an update. Lost another two pounds this week. 4 to go. No change in the exercise which I'm putting down to rubbish weather and cold, and not because I am secretly Sloth Boy. I've felt even more of a difference this week.

But next week is....ale festival. So, the goal next week is to build in at least some of that into the rest of my diet and hopefully hold steady.

This isn't quite related to diet, but it's part of overall health: stress mangement.

These past few months, I've been having really bad stress management issues, mainly due to schoolwork. It's had the negative effects of significantly reducing my appetite and making lose sleep. Does anyone know any ways to cope with stress to reduce these ailments?

Some very general tips...

Recognition that everyone else you know has these feelings to varying degrees. The majority of your class are practically wetting themselves most of the time. See also everyone else on the planet. smile

Mindfulness & breathing exercises built into your daily life and also when you’re feeling anxious. There are tips for identifying and dealing with the triggers.

Establish your goals & break those goals down into chunks. Think of each school subject as a book where you’re breaking it down into chapters. It’s the chapters you’ll focus on, keeping things in perspective.

You don’t have to put times on these yet. Just know what’s required. Always a good time to check if these are realistic goals.

Identify things that make you anxious away from schoolwork and work to eliminate those.

Talk to folks. Since that can be difficult, split things down into chunks, so you can ask smaller questions. It can be lot easier to deal with a specific issue, rather than a sense of overwhelming doom. For everyone involved usually.

“I’m finding it hard focusing on one thing…” leads to a “Oh, what I do is…” response.

While you’re with folks, do nice things for them. Agreeing to paint their portrait or go on a cruise voyage may not suit your time table here, but little things for people around you leads to a positive environment which will help you no end when you’re studying.

Build in some fun to the rough plan. Pick out things that you find relaxing in particular. Brisk walks, music in addition to the obvious Legion World visits.

If you do add times to your plan, go back and multiply those times by 1.5. It nearly alwaystakes longer. If it doesn’t take longer you’ll be ahead and you’ll feel great! But it probably will, so just add it.

Top scientists all agree that laughing to thoth lad’s posts, especially the unfunny ones, is a key part of any stress release programme. Promote this by replying with compliments.

Build in some routines. Pick a few to start with. Don’t try to restructure your entire life. TV off at time X, devices off at time Y, Bed at time Z etc. It’ll take a little while to work, so don’t worry when it’s tough to start with. Little things go a long way here.

Get some exercise in your routine. Your brain will thank you for having the full support of your body, while it has other things to be getting on with.

Enjoy what you do. See things as positive challenges (always good when things are in those smaller chunks above) and not pit traps.

Tell yourself that you are Super Special of Space at meals or three times a day. Minimum. Positive reinforcement is a good thing.

Further information can be obtained at the cost of a picture of an almond slice. Yes, especially in the dieter's thread. I want others to know what I'm sacrificing here.

I've experienced those issues myself. I think one of the best ways is to get support externally - from trusted friends or family members.

Soothing music also helps, as does even small amounts of exercise.
