Legion World, Sol system, 2.5 light minutes due galactic north of Saturn. March 31st 3015, 1810 hours

Zoe and Bina sat together in one of Shake’s central booths waiting for more of their friends to join them.

The two young ladies had laughed as Doug Nolan served them drinks and struggled good naturedly to concoct the exotic cocktails they had ordered. The poor man had been given time enough to change out of his sweat stained gym wear, shower and grab a few hours rest before having to honour the bet; and so here he was, Shakes new barman for the next twelve hours... the only ‘out’ the bet had allowed was if the loser were personally called on a mission. Several of his teammates had teased him that they planned on celebrating the results of the vote for leader tonight in raucous style. Douglas Nolan had groaned.

“Zoe, before the others arrive I hope it’s okay but I’ve a question for you...”

“Sure, what’s up? I voted for Duplicate Girl before you ask...”

“It’s not that,” Bina smiled, “...it’s about Gahaji... well, you know he and I were really close for a while and I couldn’t help notice that you are getting close to him now but... well... It just doesn’t feel right. I’m sorry but... what are you doing with him?”

“What? What you saying Bina? We’re friends and that’s all. If you want the tracker boy back in your crib again then you go for it girl, I’m certainly not standing in your way!”

“Zoe, please, my abilities are never ‘off’ as such so you can’t lie to me... I know you are interested...”

“Bina...” Zoe Sauguin sounded sad as she spoke, her voice was low and her body hunched over, “It’s not him, well he is cute and all but he’s not interested in me at all so I’m not going to make a fool of myself... anyway, I usually prefer my guys with hairy chests ...” She gave a fragile smile before continuing, “Bina, it’s not Gahaji, it’s the Ruby of Life... it’s like it sings to me. I can hear it and it’s so charming... so alluring...” For a second her eyes focussed on the distance.

“Grife Zoe! You need to speak with Xao or Glorith, you know that don’t you? That’s a powerful magic talisman and we don’t know exactly what it’s capable of. Please promise me you’ll ask Xao about it, please?”

“Sure, I know you’re right Bina.... Thank you.” Kinetix gave Otaki a quick hug before excusing herself. As she left Shakes Bina knew her friend from the Academy would not ask anyone for information. It was really apparent that whatever Kinetix had already decided was going to happen would happen, no matter what warnings her friends gave her.

Cece Becks waited in one of Shake’s side booths.

Dr Kabbo had originally suggested she speak with Harmonia as the two ladies had shared experiences in the 21st century. He had casually asked if she saw any validation in thinking that there may be a way to ease her worries and anxieties through the mutual acknowledgement of those shared moments?

Cece had smiled and reminisced about a thousand years prior when she had shared a few exciting winter months with Harmonia in the Himalayas. Cece had been looking to escape from her hectic life by finding the most remote monastery she could and meditating as much as possible. Her father was losing control, her sisters were scattered across the solar system and she felt exhausted. She had been more than clever enough to guess what was coming… She had been in the temple for under a week when the avalanche struck, which in itself was not exceptionally unexpected. Harmonia had raised the alarm and helped Cece evacuate the building, though what was odd was that the avalanche only struck after the last person had left.

When Cece had asked Harmonia about it she had only replied that there was a tremendous weight of snow on the hills above and it could only be held back for so long… Cece had guessed there and then about Harmonia’s elemental abilities though they never actually acknowledged them. They had become friends after that event and for several months were virtually inseparable until one day out of the blue Harmonia announced she had to go to an ashram in Olde California. Cece had been disappointed, if she was being honest, by the casual way the conversation occurred though wished her friend the very best of luck.

After Harmonia left Cece only remained at the monastery for three weeks before she too had to leave – though in her case it was because her father had finally broken the 2023 Cairo Non-Aggression Pact and had gone on a rampage killing 147 innocents in a neighbouring country. The Sisterhood of Lightning had recalled Cece into active service. Within a month her father was killed by the Phantom Stranger and the Sisterhood had been cursed… The Daughters of Black Adam were born that day and after that Cece’s memories were not so pleasant.

Cece shook her head as these memories took her back to the life she had once lived.

Even as she remembered the shared history she and the current Legion Leader had the three people she had invited to join her arrived. Kara Zor El and Laurel Kent walked in together, sharing a joke between them. Cece liked both of them, their bubbly and straight forward natures made them a pleasure to work beside… and as a young girl growing up in the early 21st century she had fantasised about the legendary Kryptonian super hero that had sacrificed herself to save the world – Super Girl had been one of her earliest role models! As Cece spotted the two girls and waved hello Mon El walked through the doors, his broad shoulders, confident gait and serious face made him look far more like a warrior than Cece knew him to be.

The four Legionnaires sat together in a secluded booth, around them several of their colleagues played holo-games or caught up with their partners and friends, but Cece needed help – this was an informal meeting that could, she realised, have ramifications further down the line.

“Thanks for coming; I really do appreciate your being here. I need some advice and you three are the best people I could think of to get it from…”

“It’s election gossip you’re after then try Gazelle…” Laurel said and the others laughed.

“No… it’s a little bit more personal, you see all of us are out of our natural time period and… well, I want to know how you cope with it...”

Andromeda gasped and reached across the table, gently placed her hands on top of Thunder’s. The two women exchanged a look that shared the confusion, anxiety and empathy they both felt at that moment. Laurel placed a hand lightly on the two young time lost women’s wrist and started to say something but ended up blubbing instead. The three girls laughed at their mutual emotional displays and consequent embarrassment.

Mon El never lost the smile from his face though they could all see the beginnings of water in his eyes. He simply said, “Jan and Imra helped a lot... and Shady’s belief in me...”

The vote results were announced and the crowd that had gathered in Shakes erupted in celebration!

Two of the people eligible to vote hadn’t – Gear, who had said he would gladly serve whoever took over the role, and Crystal Kid who was off base at present and had declined to vote as he wished to announce his resignation from his current post. Bbob had expressed his interest in joining the Substitute team on Earth instead.

It wasn’t too much of a surprise when the holo popped up showing Element Lad had won though it was tallied as a win by only one vote. What was a surprise was the Deputy post result was shared between Duplicate Girl and Sun Boy! A run-off vote was called though within minutes everyone agreed that with the team being bigger than it had ever been before two deputies wasn’t such a bad idea. Both Lu and Dirk were very surprised by this result.

Rokk Krinn made a point of being one of the first to congratulate all of them. Lydda Jath tried to hide her smile as she offered her commiserations to Cosmic Boy.

Grava sat in a small side nook with Private Lamment.

The young soldier’s skin showed many orange blotches that he seemed to take particular pride in.

“Like starshine, you gotta know how this feels. It’s so-o-o-o outer-galactic Grava, it’s nova-bright intense!”

He blew along the hairs on his arm. It was very apparent that where the orange blotches took over there were no hairs to move. Private Lamment had been speaking non-stop for several minutes now about how different the various parts of his skin felt since the operation that Dr Shakespeare had performed to help him recover from the damage he’s suffered by diving at the comet. There were some ‘gross rad-like weirdio things’ happening. The orange blotches, obviously his DNA being re-written somehow by Grava’s after a sample was introduced in the recovery process, were somehow immune to standard atmospheric variance… just like Grava’s. And the blotches were spreading.

Dr Shakespeare had requested the young soldier return to the medi-lab for a 72 hour period of observation but instead private Lamment had remained in his quarters, refusing to have any further tests run on his skin or blood, or hair…. Which was starting to fall out… or his blood pressure, or his scent markers or anything else the good doctor wanted. Grava looked concerned as she listened to the hyper-excited young man sat opposite her. Drura had explained to Grava how the private had acted inappropriately and now, the first time the two had had alone since, she was starting to see that the young man that had flattered and pursued her so vigorously was probably a trifle over-excited verging on the unhinged. Grava realised, with a heart aching lump in her throat, that she desperately needed to speak to Dr Shakespeare and possibly even Dr Kabbo real soon… Private Lamment was not at all stable.


Tellus swam elegantly around the methane chamber Dr Shakespeare had created to mimic the Great Mother Ocean of his home world Hykraius. He had done this many times though until now he had always been alone. Now the great golem Mordecai had joined him. It had followed him, much like a puppy might, after he had released it from the rogue telepath Jeyra Entinn’s control, and when Tellus had needed to relax in this huge chamber Mordecai had clambered in with him and afterwards simply refused to leave. Tellus could only assume that the dim light and murky floor underfoot resembled Mordecai’s original home in Rimbor City’s sewers.

Brainiac 5 had scanned the creature and appeared quite satisfied by whatever the results had shown him, telling the telepathic Legionnaire that it would be okay to stay there so long as they occasionally remembered to feed the golem… the Coluan had not said what they needed to feed it on though. Tellus rather enjoyed the company as Mordecai’s mind was child-like and the simple pleasure that emanated from it whenever he was present helped Tellus relax further as he lounged in his chamber. The gentle Hykraian thought he must remember to thank Dr Shakespeare and Jan Arrah again for building this magnificent room for him.

Legion World, Sol system, 2.5 light minutes due galactic north of Saturn. April 1st 3015, 0230 hours

As the night drew on and more and more drinks were consumed the dismissive glances between the two on separate tables became sarcastic comments when they bumped into each other at the bar which led to a particularly drunken Jazmin Cullen getting up close and personal in Hadru Jamik’s face and saying some rather unpleasant things about the Phlonite’s ancestry. The scene itself was not attractive, did neither Leagionnaire any real benefit and ultimately led to the first bar fight in Shake’s history.

It didn’t last long and was little more than a push, a shove, a missed elbow strike and a knee to the groin. After that Gravity Kid had split the two apart and Ferro, Tyroc, Thunder, Power Boy, Sun Boy and Gazelle all stepped in between Chemical Kid and Kid Quantum to help calm the situation right down. Hadru’s anger was incandescent and he tried to lash out against the group that was separating him from the object of his rage. Thunder knocked him unconscious with a single flick of a finger in under a second of the catalytic Phlonite’s attempt to stop the metabolism of everyone present. Jazmin was shouting across the group that Chemical Kid was a freakin’ psycho and now they could all see it. Tyroc lowered the volume as Sun Boy spoke to her.

The newly voted deputy leader was quite direct as he announced to everyone present that both Jazmin and Hadru were suspended pending an inquiry into their professional conduct. Jazmin tried to argue but was swiftly removed from the bar and escorted to her chambers where she was told to stay until she was summoned in the morning. Hadru was taken to the nearest medi-bay where he slept quite peacefully for ten straight hours. Back in Shakes Sun Boy made it abundantly clear to everyone, especially the more agitated junior team members that the behaviour they had witnessed that night was not to be replicated. He reminded them that Legionnaires were seen throughout the galaxy as shining examples of respectability so they would need to act that way, and finally, almost casually, he said sides were not to be taken by anyone present in the days to come and a professional working attitude would be expected from all as the two Legionnaires at the heart of this incident dealt with whatever punishment was meted out to them. As he had been steadily glowing as he spoke no-one dared to argue.


Jan Arrah was fast asleep when Dirk’s call came through. The newly elected leader knew that Sun Boy wouldn’t call without good reason though a quick glance at his omnicrom let Jan know that there were no immediate galaxy threatening dangers facing the group… ah well, time to get up and deal with another exciting day, he thought to himself. Although he would never admit it he was ever so slightly miffed that Dr Shakespeare appeared to have slept through the call and snored gently at the other side of his bed. Jan pulled the comforter around the sleeping doctor and quickly dressed and left his quarters. Behind him Jan Arrah didn’t see the big doctor as he rolled over into the centre of the bed.

“Stay safe Legionnaire….” The doctor whispered with a grin as he snuggled into the warmth Element Lad had left behind.

Danielle Foccart was having trouble sleeping so stood in the Warp Control room and spoke with Henry. She liked the chats they had as the information could be passed along between them at AI speeds with little or no need for emotional subtext that could dominate vocal conversations.

Danielle had just asked the holo of the man from the future why his system had alerted him earlier that day to a one month window of opportunity. For the first time since they had spoken Henry seemed startled. Danielle explained that she had monitored all in-coming communications since they had arrived here on the planetoid several months ago and his systems comm unit was broadcasting on a bandwidth she could capture.

Henry smiled and explained that with the Naltorian Time Beacon going online in thirty days he only had that time left to access his future self if he needed any additional information or support. Danielle nodded and seemed content with that answer though wondered to herself why Henry’s future self hadn’t helped him when the Emerald Empress had filled their home with neuro-bonding nannites.

She also wondered why he called his future self ‘Adym’ as she only knew of one ‘Adym’ from the info-banks and as sfar as she could discern from the limited data available that person ran ECHO, the black ops time team that Professor Dox, Professor Li and Mister Daggle spoke about when they didn’t realise the in-house security system was watching them...

Well that's that, I had to post them all as I know I'd only end up re-writing and tinkering and changing them.

Legion Worlds part 3 will start soon as we check in on Inferno and Gates as well as finding out why Timber Wolf wanted a favour from M'Windaji. There may also be a changing in the ranks...

Wow! Really loved this set full of character moments, Harbi. As always, so much going on and I'm amazed at how you can show so much character development in such a short time.

I really loved seeing who voted for who, and I would love to see a full tally! not segments for each because I don't want to kill you, but a tally would be very interesting

Zoe's lust for power is true to form, so like the original Zoe! Oh dear...

Poor Lydda, but I can totally understand where she is coming from and I am quite happy for her that Rokk didn't win.

Great to see Lu and Dirk called up! Neither really got a chance to lead the team in the comics so I'm happy for their exposure. Dirk especially, your earlier pieces showed that he can be quite a disciplinarian. And despite his party boy facade, he certainly would not act in such a rude way.

Poor Tel, he does hold quite a grudge. I sympathize with him of course, I always liked Tel, and Dirk did come down on him pretty hard even though he did sort of deserve it.

Imagine Comet Queen being one to realize that someone is unbalanced! But she's sharper than we give her credit for.

Crystal Kid's thoughts were spot on. I love Gorilla Girl! Also love the bits with the Subs.

Loved Thunder's walk down memory lane, and this meeting with Kara, Laurel and Mon-El was brilliant! Why didn't anyone think of that before?

As usual, more, more, and more!

Thanks again IB, the personal moments are always fun to write and with all the new members in the team there is loads of potential stories to write. I'm not going to give a full tally of who voted for whom though it is fun to speculate.

There may be a subs story later on as their ranks have grown too.

I'm going to take a break for a few weeks as I get cracking on with part 3 which will start with Gates and Inferno getting into trouble and Timber Wolf trying to do the right thing and meeting up with a blast from the past, and maybe solving an ongoing mystery in the process.

Loved the leader elections section Harbinger!

Danielle's intrigues me the most. hmmm more hints of Henry and a tie to Echo...hmmmm curiouser and curiouser.

Jazmin and Hardu's fight was well done. thats been building for awhile. I know its bad but i like seeing the moments when these characters aren't so perfect and have personalities that clash. you do such a good job showing those kind of moments.

can't wait for more!

Is Jeyra Entinn an original creation of yours, or is she from the Retroboot?

The Emerald Empress and Mano are favorite villains of mine, and I'm eager to see them again.

Not sure how I feel about Dirk as devil's advocate, given my predisposition to dislike him, but you've gotten me interested in other characters I had previously disliked or dismissed, so we'll see where this goes.

Hey Omni, thanks for your kind words again. Henry's story will be continued in the next arc as messages from the future sparks all sorts of mischief. Danielle is fun to write - I've worked with kids on the autistic spectrum before and while initially it was confusing as their reactions can be way off from the expected after very little time getting to know them I found them to be amazing and really inspiring, and thats how I see her.

Fanfie, great to hear from you too. I love the encyclopedia galactica parts in the comic so have tried, not always successfully, to include them here. They are a great way to set a scene without an awkward infodump. Dirk is in for some attention as he deals with everything he's been through. Much like you I never really liked him so have made a special effort to give him some character growth, hope you like the outcome. Jeyra was the telepath Cham fought in the SPs HQ in the 3boot so wanted to reference that reality and needed a psychic to explain Shadys memory loss - she was perfect for the part. Hope you enjoy the rest of this, thanks again for your feedback, it's always appreciated.

I have a lack of familiarity with Inferno and Gates, but you've gotten me to like them right away. You've also gotten me to care for Luornu, a character I have long disliked.

The Emerald Empress' attack plan is impressive. I look forward to seeing how the Legionnaires get out of this one.

Hey Fl, thanks for your on going critiques, greatly appreciated. Private Lamment was definitely written to be a creep, more on him later though so it'll slowly make more sense.

I liked Lu as the friendly adventurer that was probably feeling a little out of her depth but did her best anyway as she used to be written way way back in the day. The tough nut in the Academy annoyed me though and because I want to break that down and look into her character a bit more I'll included her in one of the opening arcs of LW 3, hope you'll enjoy it.

The Spear of Artemis will get a bit of screen time in LW3 as well, as we have still to find out what she makes of the UP.

LOVED the individual motivations for each leadership vote and Sun Boy as a deputy is a really interesting choice which I have confidence will lead to more good moments with him as we've seen already. I'm kind of reminded of way back in the day when the party girl Wasp first led the Avengers and proved she had more depth than people had assumed.

You have a real knack for characterisation...with so many characters at the table, all of them feel distinct from one another and you've even made me like Harmonia. Can't wait to see where the team goes from here!

Of course my favorite scene was the one with Tasmia and her ancestors. I greatly appreciate the obvious thought and care you've put into their backgrounds. And it goes without saying that to have Tasmia start to realized her potential is thrilling to me.

Everything else -- Lar's dreadful predicament, Brainy's resourcefulness, Cham still being a detective at heart, Grava being endearing rather than annoying, and whatever Danielle is witnessing turns out to be -- makes for rewarding reading.

Once again highlighting how much Cham loves a mystery. Nice.

Great cliffhanger, and I love the Emerald Empress' over-the-top dialogue. I imagine that must have been fun to come up with.

An origin story for Tellus and his home world! I love it!

Also loved the sly black humour in the exchange between Reep and Lexikon, although understandably neither of the characters shared in my amusement.

Comet Queen's flashback to Chuck's death was very poignant.
