On the cover to Avengers #16, Captain America shouts "Avengers Assemble!" against a wall of posters of prospective Avengers. This is the issue that saw the team's first major roster overhaul.

Hint 1: This issue debuted in 1965, if that helps narrow who existed in the Marvel Universe at the time.
Hint 2: With the exception of one slot, the other four characters did have a commonality.
Hint 3: Only two of the three left to guess ever attained Avengers status of any level.

There is a theme to Cap's Kooky Quartet. That theme continued onto the posters, when you took away the existing Avengers.
I'll also alphabetize them for everyone.

I vaguely remember the Black Knight and Rick Jones and being a little surprised at the others. Since the Black Knight at the time was a villain, I'm guessing some were villains? 01. Black Knight 02. Ibby adds the Enchantress and Black Knight. Andy adds Rick Jones and Melter. You're correct about the poster theme, Andy. I was shocked when I looked at it again the other day. In my head it was a wall of heroes...I didn't remember that it was a wall of villains largely.
One spot remaining, and the next question goes to whoever gets it.

Andy has it! Executioner was along for the poster ride. Very interesting set up at the time. Besides the active Avengers, it was all villains. The villains who made the roster hadn't really pestered the Avengers to the point of the Masters of Evil though.

Yeah, I remember that time - and the Black Knight stood out because he was a villain. And for some reason, I always liked the Melter (yeah, I'm the one person).
