Ah, I couldn't remember Hellstrom. I was going to go with Son of Satan, before Howard popped into my head. If, it's not Hellstrom could it be Man Thing, or as he's forever known, Giant Sized Man Thing?

Chaim has it!
It was Defenders 76 & 77. Moondragon pulls together Hellcat, Valkyrie and Wasp together to investigate a mysterious being in Vegas. Turns out to be Omega the Unknown (whose book was just cancelled). They somehow assist in Omega's death (which of course saves the planet from invasion or something). The plot is kinda lost on me, but as a kid I loved the Defenders' rotating team and the art was pretty good.
I did not understand the Omega/John Starling thing until I reread it as an adult. Even then it's kinda wonky.
Omega was brought back by Johnathon Lethem in another short lived series about 10 years ago
