What Wally did was something that can be done at Christmas, but in the story it was not Christmas. In other words, it is something that can be done on a holiday or not on a holiday.

Ummmm... being the one to put sleeping pills into annoying relatves drinks
getting to recite the family history...It were tough being an android in England, so we chose to leave for a new land.We lost many friends to the salty ocean.Rust mainly.
Some sort of cultural thing involving being the one to put up a particular symbolic decoration?

I think I am going to reveal the answer and let the next person ask a new question.
Wally & his parents were sitting down to the family dinner and were discussing different things. Wally's dad asks him to carve the meat. Wally says "But you do that." to which his dad says "The man of the family does it."
In retrospect, Wally's dad could have been coming out as transgendered.

Ah! I just couldn't think of something holiday/nonholiday specific. My next guess was going to be feeding the Titans prisoners in the basement after the tower blew up, so you may have made a good call :-)
