Yet Another Kill This Thread!

The following rules were established by Kent at the start of the first 24-hour version, adapted from the original rules by EDE:

The rules:

1. The Basic Idea: Post to this thread, if no one posts after you for 24 hours, you win!

2. Posts that are not direct responses to one of the five preceding posts are ineligible to win. The topic can drift, but no complete non-sequitors. Posts that are responses to non-sequitors are also ineligible to win. Posts that are responses to responses to non-sequitors, and responses to those posts, etc., become eligible, however.

3. In the event that this thread is locked, there shall be no winner unless a new thread is started for the contest. Furthermore, any post that results in the banning of the poster shall also be ineligible to win.

4. So, more precisely, one wins if one makes a post, and then no one makes another post that's eligible to win for 24 hours.

Okay, time to kill!

I - walkwithcrowds (7-day version)
II - none
III - none
IV - Quislet, Esq
V - Rockhopper Lad (the first 24-hour version)
VI - Rockhopper Lad
VII - cleome
VIII - Rockhopper Lad
IX - Rockhopper Lad
X - none
XI - none
XII - none
XIII - Invisible Brainiac
XIV - Invisible Brainiac
XV - Invisible Brainiac
XVI - Invisible Brainiac
XVII - Invisible Brainiac

I never used Alakazam on my Pokemon teams because I never had anyone to trade with to evolve my Kadabra. frown

I traded with a cousin, and beat the Elite Four with Alakazam and Gengar.

I really hated having to trade to evolve, though frown

The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the waterspout.
Down came the rain
and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun
and dried up all the rain
and the itsy bitsy spider climbed up the spout again.

King Arthur: What? Behind the rabbit?
Tim: It *is* the rabbit!
King Arthur: You silly sod!
Tim: What?
King Arthur: You got us all worked up!
Tim: Well, that's no ordinary rabbit.
King Arthur: Ohh.
Tim: That's the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on!
Sir Robin: You tit! I soiled my armor I was so scared!
Tim: Look, that rabbit's got a vicious streak a mile wide! It's a killer!
Sir Galahad: Get stuffed!
Tim: He'll do you up a treat, mate.
Sir Galahad: Oh, yeah?
Sir Robin: You manky Scots git!
Tim: I'm warning you!
Sir Robin: What's he do? Nibble your bum?
Tim: He's got huge, sharp... er... He can leap about. Look at the bones!
King Arthur: Go on, Bors. Chop his head off!
Sir Bors: Right! Silly little bleeder. One rabbit stew comin' right up!

People were upset about the picture of the virgin Mary that used elephant dung. Also Piss Christ (a photograph of a crucifix in urine) upset many people.

Merrie Melodies were originally cartoons created to plug popular songs owned by Warner Brothers. So they were like pre-television music videos.

Silly Symphony is a series of 75 animated short films produced by Walt Disney Productions from 1929 to 1939. As their name implies, the Silly Symphonies were originally intended as whimsical accompaniments to pieces of music. As such, the films usually had independent continuity and did not feature continuing characters, unlike the Mickey Mouse shorts produced by Disney at the same time. (Exceptions to this include Three Little Pigs, The Tortoise and the Hare, and Three Orphan Kittens, which all had sequels.) The series is notable for its innovation with Technicolor and the multiplane motion picture camera, as well as its introduction of the character Donald Duck making his first appearance in the Silly Symphony cartoon The Wise Little Hen in 1934.

In Mystery Science Theater 3000's take on the dreadful movie Time Chasers aka Tangents, the villain sounded a lot like Sylvester the Cat. I was bummed that nobody in the audience made any jokes about it.

Sylvester appeared in 103 cartoons in the golden age. He appeared fourth most frequently in films behind Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and Daffy Duck respectively. Three of his cartoons won Academy Awards, the most for any starring Looney Tunes character: they are Tweetie Pie, Speedy Gonzales, and Birds Anonymous.

Birds Anonymous is a brilliant satire. I don't think they showed it even during the Turner Network's rebroadcasting binge in the late 1990s. I'm not sure why.

Then there's What's Opera, Doc?, where Elmer kills Bugs then collapses in a sobbing heap. Make up your mind, Elmer!

And Bugs goes, well, did you expect a happy ending from an opera?

There's another version with better dance moves, but this one has the closest voices. You've gotta' love "Elmer" not quite being able to pick up the "'dead' wabbit" because the latter's too heavy.

Well, the Wabbit always returns, and so will a new thread, as needed.

A lot of passings this year, including Richard Adams, who wrote Watership Down: one of my all-time favorite books since my age barely hit double digits. It's hard to be too sad about it, though. He was prolific, acclaimed, and 96 years old. His rabbit characters will live on a long time, too.

I need to reread that in '17. It's been too long.

It's weird that they're stereotyped as the gardener's ultimate foe. I suppose the wild ones are, but if you have domestic rabbits, their droppings are great for growing plants. I used to have a pal in my book club who kept several rabbits, and she made quite a lot of extra cash selling the droppings to local hippie gardeners.

They're also a delight to pet. The ones that want to be petted, anyway. They can nip something awful though. We used to have one that demanded the attention due her. She would nip us inattentive humans into line.

Captain Carrot is depicted as a superhero who lived on the other-dimensional world of Earth-C, an alternate Earth populated by sentient animals, which was later redesignated Earth-26 in the new DC multiverse. At the beginning of the Captain Carrot series, he was referred to as "Roger Rabbit"; later in the series, "Rodney Rabbit" was usually used, to avoid legal issues involving the literary (and later film) character Roger Rabbit. Rodney was officially stated to be his middle name in the letters column.

I tried one with corned beef and onions. Turned out okay but I would love to add cheese and to try different cuts of meat.

Seasoned beef (or a mix of beef & pork) is the traditional filling here, often with rice mixed in to keep it all from being super-fatty and heavy.

I've also done squash, baked, with the seeds removed & filled with rice and/or beans. Gotta' be careful they don't dry out in cooking, though-- because by nature they're less fatty than even lean meat.

Tonight I'm doing regular old baked beans w/veggie "franks," though.

I was and am a fussy eater. I did not like squash (still don't) My mom would make both pumpkin pies and squash pies, but always told me they were pumpkin pies (which I would eat).

Now, I actually like the taste of squash pie better than pumpkin pie.

So much commercial pumpkin pie is bad: gelatinous texture, not enough spice, and soggy cardboard-y crust. If it's made right, I love it.

Sweet potato pie is also fabulous if made with care. I'd totally try the squash pie.

I like them too. We dip them in brown sugar and fry them.

My fave way to make sweet potatoes is cubed and oven baked with a coating of veggie oil, honey or maple syrup, and a sprinkling of toasted pecans.

I almost never bother to peel potatoes before cooking them.

I also include the skins when cooking potatoes. The skin is supposed to be nutritious.

I use the leftover mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes the next morning to make potato cakes that I fry up.

I only have a microwave right now. I need to learn how to cook potatoes using that. Apparently it can be done.

I once lucked into an old GE Toaster oven very similar to the one we had when I was a kid. It lasted a long time even though I bought it used. Was sad when it died. The replacement's all right, I guess. But I swear: the inside of the window fogs up when you turn it on. Which strikes me as a design flaw that someone in Engineering-land should've corrected. shake

The good news is that now in this area we have "Repair Fairs" several times a year. You can bring your small appliances there and tinkerers will look them over for a nominal fee. When this toaster oven wouldn't work, it took the guy about 5-10 minutes to find and fix the issue. We thanked him and donated about two bucks to future events.

Older appliances seem to always last longer than the new stuff. Sad really. More options means more failures.

Our local men's soccer team is The Portland Timbers.

I haven't seen them play, but I have seen the women's team: The Portland Thorns in a game. They won. cool

The Football Association banned women's team from playing on grounds affiliated to their organisation back in 1921.

One reason was the supposed physical damage playing football could do to a woman. But it was far more likely to have been fear of gender equality, and odd ideas of morality, as the women's teams were popular and had been attracting large crowds.

LP is also an abbreviation for paper corp. (& serial villain) Louisiana Pacific.

I swear, I don't think I've ever heard that Murphy song, except for the snippet covered in one of Weird Al's polkas.

Dame Shirley Veronica Bassey, DBE (born 8 January 1937) is a Welsh singer whose career began in the mid-1950s, best known for recording the theme songs to the James Bond films Goldfinger (1964), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), and Moonraker (1979).

One of my earliest memories of a non-Disney flick in a theater is Moonraker. I remember even then thinking that it was unfair that only the last woman to sleep with Bond was allowed to live. [grumble]
